The mother of all sequals…

Jaws will always be remembered in history for so many things, but what I’ve chose to comment here, is about how sequels are now part of the main stream and how they are marketed. Planet of the Apes, and few other ‘franchises’ had existed before Jaws, but none have been copied, parodied, or are engraved in the mind of the public as the Jaws franchise. Jaws was one of the first film franchises to use a number after the title, along with aggressive add campains. For years every sequel that has come out uses something from the Jaws ‘book’ of ‘how to’ when it comes to sequels. Down to the taglines: ‘Just when you thought it was safe…,’ ‘See it before…’ ‘The (place your number here) dimension in terror’,…and the all too famous: ‘This time…it’s personal..’Face it, the Jaws sequels are bad, and yet still can be watched, because they are not as bad as most sequels, yet taught many film makers what NOT to do with a franchise.

Good Sequel to ‘Jaws’

You know this follow up gets panned and I really don’t know why. It is a good follow up and continuation of the ‘Jaws’ story. The director and DP really went out of their way to give the audience some great shots and suspense. I thought ‘Eddie’s Death’ was an awesome build up along with Mike’s near chomp. Just because it is a sequel does not make it a bad film; in many ways the director was faced with a huge debt to pay in expectations, just from the title

We get to revisit Chief Brody and his family, along with Amity Island; See the children grow older. Later in the film, the kids are great, and the sailboat/stranded island they drift is a cool set up. We see an even younger Keith Gordon, showing talent and obvious reasons for future roles. Lorraine Gary gives a continued motherly and sympathetic performance that we all loved her for

The score is really good here too, so we must thank John Williams for more great work. The music for the Water-ski sequence is incredible

I wish all sequels gave this much, when so few do not.

Decent

I was anticipating Jaws 2, because I heard it was really good from some of my family members, and it was coming on TV that day. When I sat down to watch, I found myself immediately interested. Over time, the movie did kind of lose it’s touch, because overall it wasn’t that good of a movie. I found myself almost turning the channel at times, and others I almost fell asleep. Still, this movie was decent. I guess I was expecting to much of it, but then again, how couldn’t you, seeing as what the movie it follows is. Well, if you’re a HUGE fan of the first, this ‘MIGHT’ not be for you, but it’s worth the watch, and if you view it with an open mind, I’m sure you’ll like it.

“Transformers” 2007 by Michael Bay – Movie Review

If you think that good battle-robots Autobots and bad battle-robots Decepticons have landed on our dearest planet Earth in 2007 – you’re strongly mistaken. Because they came to our world in the times of the notorious Moscow Olympiad-80, when suddenly bubble-gum and coca-cola appeared in Moscow for the first time. Although the robots landed not in Moscow but in Japan. That is where these amusing robots-transformers were invented. They were the models of different automobiles which then could be transformed into battle robots.

Autobots

The American toy company Hasbro got interested in these toys and bought the rights to produce them in the US. Interested in the American toy company Hasbro, and then bought the rights to their production in the States. Due to the fact that they approach marketing in the USA with all the possible seriousness. That’s why these nameless by the time auto-robots received their personal names. Which is more, they received a whole history explaining which planet they came form and what they do here. Well, and thirdly, the whole comics industry started hard work on creating the epci story of the planet Cybertrone on which the good robots Autobots under the leadership of brave General Optimus Prime (originally it was Prime Time but later reduced to simply Prime) are fighting against the bad robots Decepticons headed by an treacherous Megatron.

Thus, everyone was happy: Hasbro sold megatons of transformers, the Marvel company produced mountains of comics, and Sunbow Production crafted animated cartoons about the adventures of elusive Autobots behind the Decepticons’ enemy line. In the end Sunbow even produced full-length animated film “Transformers” in which Autobots and Decepticons arrive on Earth and start all kinds of battles, while a guy named Spike is helping our folks Autobots. But the movie was a failure. Why? Either due to the fact that there were too many robots and too few people, or due to the fact that the kids already got fed up with transformers – it is hard to say. After that the Transformers have almost disappeared – people lost interested in them. The new type of heroes has settled in the kids’ hearts – Spiderman, Pokemons and the like, resulting in the transformers being forgotten in the far corners of dusty garages. Nobody was interested in the fate of the planet Cybertron anymore.

However, in the mid-nineties Hasbro managed to revive the interest in the transformers. They invented a new concept: robots can now be transformed into animals. After that when the creators imagination started to blossom with new models, the kids’ interest woke up again, resulting in creating fan-communities which could fiercely argue upon which transformer is more cool – a hamster/crocodile or eagle/ram type.

Optimus Prime - Autobots Leader

So what does the movie have to do with that – you may want to ask? Money, my dear, the money! When the Dreamworks studio learned that there almost three billion transformers sold throughout the world, they’ve got a sudden nervous hiccup and decided that the time has come for them to reap some reward from transformers. Spielberg got himself involved in the project, and his shy smile told us that he was going to make some little bit of money with transformers. He has got the project moving – the rights were purchased, the screenplay was ordered, etc. Then they announced that Michael Bay was to direct the “Transformers” – yes, that same Michael Bay whose movies portray brawny guys who save the whole fucking world, and smiling Afro-Americans who continuously crack jokes, and fast cars which keep on speeding and darting around. That same Michael Bay whose genius makes a lousy “Ferrari” spend half an hour trying all in vain to catch up with a huge tractor-trailer.

The Transformers fan communities on the Internet didn’t appreciate the candidacy of Bay (well, this is typical I’d say). ‘Who’s that Michael-Schmichael anyway?’ – the fans yelled at the forums. He doesn’t understand a bit in robots! He doesn’t know at all what Transformers are! he is only good for shooting some driveling patriotic flicks of the ‘let-all-the-good-guys-from-across-the-land-along-with-wiseass-Afro-Americans-drive-nice-fast-and-furious-cars-to-save-this-fucking-world’ type. Although there’s been some truth in the fans idle talk, that kind of truth was totally unacceptable for Michael Bay and Dreamworks.

Megatron - Decepticons Leader

They started shooting in such an environment of harassment from all the envious fans. Bay was so stressed with such environment that he demanded the twelfth security and secrecy level for all the shooting stages which corresponds to clinical paranoia in its most brutal manifestations. The final version of the script has never been typed on a computer so that the hackers were not able to steal the script. The script was written in an ancient way – pencil on the paper. The stack with the script was packed in a suitcase, which was carried by Bay everywhere, he even took it to the shower.

Still the fans got their hands on some bits of information from time to time, and they immediately began to criticize and ridicule, each time reducing Bay to tears. And only Spielberg was able to calm him down with an ironical smile and a kind word. He always said: ‘Son, who are these fans to you? Are they going to pay money to see the ‘Transformers’ movie? No hope! The fans will download the camrip from the Internet and start bitching again. Remember that our audience are the pop-corn devouring guys and their girlfriends, who will come to the cinema, buy a ticket, and that’s where our money flow starts. So relax, Michael, and enjoy. Fans are not our audience. F**k the fans!’ Ok, ok, I have imagination, can I? Spielberg never said so, though I would if I were him.

Bumblebee vs Devastator

So what was the resulting Transformers movie? You might laugh, but it turned out to be a typical Bay’s thriller, where a lot of good solid American guys are saving the world using the latest U.S. weapons, shown in great detail and very pointedly, the main character is a typical nerd who managed to overcome his nerdiness, save the world, save the good robots, seduce the impressive chick, who used to overlook him before; plus the foolish American President in red socks (something Bay never allowed himself before), a courageous Minister of Defense (John Voight has been obviously demoted as he’s been a President previously in Bay’s movie), a mysterious Sector 7, a pile of patriotic shit, Afro-American cracking jokes, a female blonde super-hacker, great car chases – in general, a complete set of traditional Bay’s features, as if you take and mix a cocktail out of “Pearl Harbor,” “Armageddon,” “Bad Boys II” and “The Island” and then spice it up with sweet-and-sour sauce of “Independence Day” by Emmerich.

It would seem that a movie with such fastfood-type collection of features is not only unnecessary to watch but even not recommended to. Well, it’s not true. There’s one thing in the ‘Transformers’ because of which you simply must see this movie, regardless of all muscled guys, nerds, presidents and blonde female hackers. This thing is TRANSFORMERS! Oh boy, what are they doing on the screen – you’ll drop your jaw, spill your beer and forget to wipe it dry.

The creators of the ‘Transformers’ movie decided not to mix up with all kinds of newly popular animal transformers – they went for the good old battle robots – Prime-time’s Autobots and Megatron’s Decepticons! The Autobots turn into cool cars, speed hither and thither, and then unfold into large humanoid robots, and there starts the action!

Bumbleee Camaro

One of the main Autobot characters – nice yellowy transformer Bumblebee – turns into the old rusty 1975 Chevrolet Camaro, which drives the main human character – nerdy Sam (Shia LaBeouf) and his gorgeous girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox). Optimus chooses the form of the classic truck, while the rest of the Autobots turn into what Spielberg was paid for by the automobile industry corporations. Bad robots mainly transformed into military equipment, which was provided by the U.S. Army that has been traditionally pleased to work with Michael Bay, who always portrayed brave American military men, sir, as admirable guys, sir, armed with the most modern military technology, sir, and their wives, sir, are waiting at their homes, sir, with newborn babies, sir, and even if the enemies, sir, are ranting, sir, that the soldiers haven’t been at home for two years, sir, we do not care, sir, yes, sir!

The level of computer graphics in this movie is just fantastic. Although we’ve been already pampered with all the CG flooding from the screens, I must admit that Bay has surpassed himself, and the visual effects studios have surpassed themselves! Transformers are modeled to the smallest detail, they are folding and unfolding, rolling, speeding, flying, shooting and somersaulting with such drive that it simply takes your breath away!

It’s good that almost all the considerable funds from the ‘Transformers’ budget were put into visual effects and computer graphics. Thus the ‘Transformers’ movie has so much computer graphics of extremely high quality that it can satisfy even such viewers as myself who don’t give a damn about the fairy tales of brawny military men, fragile nerds, witty Afro-Americans and young blonde PhD’s.

Bonecrusher vs Optimus Prime

Yes, yes and yes again – you need to watch this garbage, and on the big screen, definately! Forget about the script and the plot! When you see huge humanoid robots hoping all over the Hoover Dam and galloping on the bridges and skyscrapers of Los Angeles as they fight with each other and with modern air force (by the way, the planes and tanks are also very impressive – especially for those countries that have discord with democracy in terms of selling the oil to the States), see them transforming and racing with each other in the form of automobiles (Bay is traditionally skillful in shooting car chases) – you will get numbed and amazed, I assure you!

And besides, the film does have a few really good jokes and really funny characters like that fat black hacker and a bit weird head of Sector 7 played by a brilliant John Turturro. Oh well, yes, ‘Transformers’ movie is a complete buffoonery, but because it is about saving the world, baby, we can’t do without buffoonery, can we?

By the way, the world has been saved. Again. I wonder if they are not bored with saving the world every time?

‘The Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ 1991 – Review

T-1000

10 years after the events described in the first Terminator film, Skynet sends back a new, improved Terminator (model T-1000). Its objective is the termination of Sarah Connor’s son – John Connor, which will lead people in the fight against the machines. John Connor, knowing about the plans of Skynet, also sends a Terminator back – reprogrammed T-800 model. He must protect ten year old John from T-1000 …

Trying to retell the plot of Terminator 2 is an ungrateful and useless thing: almost everybody in the world has seen the movie. This film has gained cult status long ago and entered the world’s cinema history as one of the best examples of Sci-Fi action.

For those times, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” has become an incredibly ambitious project: for the first time the budget of the movie exceeds one hundred millionth mark. However, after the success of the first “Terminator”, “Aliens” and “The Abyss” Cameron had a lot of credibility with the studios, so he got away with the costs overrun quite easily. And, as time has shown, the producers and investors were not mistaken having faith and confidence in Cameron. The terminator sequel was not only even more ambitious, impressive and vivid in terms of production, but also more emotional, deeper and multidimensional than the original. Along with that, the Judgment Day doesn’t conflict with The Terminator (1984), but develops logically and quite organically the ideas that were put up in the 1984 movie. Therefore, it makes good sense to consider these movies as dilogy, rather than separate projects.

Famous Terminator Smile

Of course, like any real masterpiece, the Terminator dilogy did not just happen in an empty space: the theme of the machine’s revolt against humanity has been raised before in cinema and literature. The most brilliant example is, of course, Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. However, in Kubrick’s film, the idea was resolved in a completely different context and with the opposite genre shades (slow philosophical narration instead of Cameron’s non-stop action). It is therefore more logical to compare dilogy with the Aliens movie franchise (at the time of “Terminator 2″ release there were only 2 parts of the quadrilogy, the first -”Alien” – directed by Ridley Scott, and the second – “Aliens” – by James Cameron). The latter two movies raise a number of different topics, however, the main characters – the Alien and Lieutenant Ripley – have a clear resemblance to the T-1000 and Sarah Connor. Merciless and practically invulnerable creature opposed to the female-warrior, female-savior, who desperately fights for the sake of herself (“Alien” 1979), and then for the sake of all humankind (“Aliens” 1986).

Terminator 2: Nuclear Explosion

For its days “Terminator 2″ was the most spectacular film (4 “technical” Oscars – excessive proof). Despite the fact that VFX technologies have developed amazingly over the past 18 years, visual effects in “T2″ are still amazing. The famous scene of the nuclear explosion can still give you some shivers!

Equally important is the ‘human’ component: hardly anyone would argue with the fact that the heroes of the film are no less interesting than the visual effects. In part, this is an accomplishment of writers: compared to the first movie already familiar characters (T-101 and Sarah Connor), have become more diverse and interesting in psychological terms. The actors did not let down our expectations: Schwarzenegger enriched T-800 with some comic elements, and Linda Hamilton had to play only the female action hero, but also a part of the mother. Regarding T2 newcomers (John Connor performed by the young Edward Furlong and T-1000 by Robert Patrick), we can see a hundred percent fit into the roles, although talking about ‘psychologism’ of the Patrick’s performance is, perhaps, an overstatement .

Terminator 2: Farewell Thumb Up

The most important thing about “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is the director – James Cameron – who is a guru of building the perfect pace of the movie. As a result, there are no overextended (or, vice versa, crumpled) scenes in the movie. The director always knows precisely when to make a recession and give the spectators a chance to grasp some air in between the action scenes, and when to pump the iron of the non-stop action and thrill. In addition, James Cameron is able to defuse the apocalyptic atmosphere with lyrical notes or another ironic phrase from Schwarzenegger’s mouth such as the immortal ‘Asta la Vista, Baby’.

The Terminator (1984)

‘The Terminator’ 1984 – Review

It is no exaggeration to say that the Terminator is by all means a unique film. A rare example of the plot, directing, acting and cinematography – all lined up in a perfect harmony. But above all, the uniqueness of the Terminator is in the universality of the main character. Terminator, in fact, is the ideal movie hero. The machine combines all the necessary features for being and ideal action movie character.

Terminator as a real action hero. Moving towards the goal, he does not distract the viewer with such trifles as love scenes, psychological experiences and sufferings, and other nonsense.

Terminator as a dramatic character. His drama is in the hypertrophied sense of duty. And if in the first part of the movie (1984) his self-sacrifice can be attributed to the unreflecting incogitant implementation of the program, in the second movie (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) it is a real moral choice.

Terminator as an intellectual hero . He is laconic. But if he opens his mouth, then rest assured – a phrase articulated is worth to be cut in stone and quoted in ages.

Terminator as a self-ironic character . He is a stranger in this world, so he sometimes gets in ambiguous situations.

In addition, the Terminator has all the necessary features of a true macho, which contributes to his popularity among female audiences.

Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator

Add the brutal charm of Arnold Schwarzenegger to all the above-mentioned – and get a character with a unique appeal of chrome metal. Not surprisingly, the audience identifies itself with the grim villain Terminator, and not with the hero played by Michael Biehn. “I think people are sympathetic to him because everyone has a little quivering demon sitting in the subconscious, which you would like to turn into for a minute or two to go to your boss and slap the door open with your foot,” – that’s how Schwarzenegger explained the phenomenon. By the way, the Terminator part is generally considered to be the best role of Arnold. Moreover, today with full confidence we can argue that Schwarzenegger is an actor of one role – the role of the cyber-killer.

Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conor

“Terminator” has become a launching pad not only to James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Linda Hamilton, the leading female part, has also been receiving more visible parts since the Terminator movie. Adam Greenberg, who was little known before the “Terminator”, is now one of the most respected (multiple “Oscar” prize-winner) and paid cameramen in the world. Also discovered by the “Terminator” movie became a little-known composer Brad Fiedel, who wrote a truly original, mechanical-futuristic music, which became a fully fledged part of the image of Terminator.

But do not forget that the “Terminator” is first and foremost the child of James Cameron. He wrote the original script. Spent a lot of time and effort to get the project moving, to interest “Hemdale” studio in his story (and it was not easy: many of the major film studios immediately rejected such a crazy project), got the necessary budget, found suitable actors. Cameron, a staunch perfectionist, completely controlled the whole shooting process. That’s why this movie is so integrated and harmonious. Cameron managed to achieve perfect editing, so that the Terminator movie is still quoted as an action movie standard.

Terminator - Cyber-Killer From Future

Curiously, the Terminator was a low-budget movie which turned out to be a box-office hit. At roughly $6.5 million, the film went on to gross more than $78 million worldwide. Cameron previously worked in the studio of Roger Corman and learned from the cheap movie guru how to make movies out of nothing. Every cent has been spent wisely. The modest but tastefully done special effects do not dominate the subject, but only slightly back it, which in no way detracts from the movie’s eye-catching entertainment.

Visual sequence of the movie is also perfect. Not trying to shake the viewer with impressive images of future or colorful action scenes (the first part of the “Terminator” in general is strictly minimalist), the director, shot by shot, weaves bleak atmosphere of despair, making the audience forget about the popcorn.

Moreover, Cameron has made the impossible – shot a sequel, which is nothing inferior to the original (and in terms of visual effects, even surpasses the original). Fantastic special effects used by the director in the second part of the “Terminator”, with full confidence can be called revolutionary. Once again, Cameron has proved himself to be the true professional, with a fine sense of proportion and style. He just knew what he (and the spectators) wants to see in the picture. Therefore, despite the huge budget (90 million dollars) and an abundance of special effects intrinsically related to the subject plot, there’s nothing extra or over-the-head in his movie – not a single meaningless frame, not a single unnecessary scene. All the special effects in his film are subject to a plot, rather than vice versa.

Needless to say, with what enthusiasm I was looking forward to get my eyes on the third Terminator movie. But hearing that Cameron has voluntarily left out of the project, that he had not only abandoned the directing chair, but also will not take part in writing the script, I’d prefer that the Terminator was left to be a dilogy. You cannot become a Terminator. You should be born a Terminator.

“Alien” 1979 by Ridley Scott – Movie Review

“Alien” is a break-through film. A sensation on the battlefield for the moviegoers’ money. The movie which, along with several other movies shot in the late 70’s – early 80’s, defined the mainstream for many years (I would also mention that the era of “Alien” is not over yet, although it is close to its sunset as never before).

Ellen Riplay (Sigourney Weaver)

Gothic story in futuristic surroundings convincingly dusted by the wind of time (the interiors of the ship were artificially “aged”) sets the highest standards for the genre of space sci-fi. And a few have managed to surpass it. To tell the truth only James Cameron was able to do better in the “Aliens”.

Originally the screenwriter Dan O’Bannon was thinking about the storyline of gremlins spreading havoc on board the B-17 bomber. Later B-17 turned into a small starship named “Snark” with exclusively male crew. But the producers insisted that two women be included in the crew, and one of them should defeat the main villain. Time has shown that it was the right decision. Seemingly fragile but strong Ripley became the second – after her toothy enemy – most important symbol of the “Alien” cult universe.

According to the original intent the dying alien would scratch a triangle on the dashboard. Searching his ship the people from “Nostromo” would find a stone pyramid nearby with the aliens eggs. This idea was never implemented (though Giger did the necessary sketches), but the idea of the pyramid was finally used in the “Aliens v. Predator” movie.

Alien Spaceship

In the distant future a mining spaceship “Nostromo” receives a strange radio signal, and the ship’s computer decides to wake the crew from hibernation, so that people decide on further actions. The radio signal was coming from an extraterrestrial spaceship with the long-dead crew, and the holds of the ship were filled with strange leathery eggs.

While exploring the ship one of the astronauts is attacked by the creature out of the egg – as the result the astronaut gets infected with some extraterrestrial form of life. He falls into unconsciousness for a few days, but soon recovers. He does not remember anything and feels good. No one suspects what havoc will burst out on “Nostromo” soon after that.

The idea of confronting the alien creatures and humans is not new, although in most stories the alien creatures visited the old sinful Earth and tried to destroy the poor human race ( “Alien Factor,” “War of the Worlds”). Ridley Scott, then a young but promising director, decided to follow the same storyline but only in the space. Scott only had one movie behind – “The Duelists” – but it was a commercial success, thus the producers of the “Aliens” decided to invite him as director.That was the right choice as Ridley Scott managed to shoot quality film which became the sci-fi movie classic. The film received the Oscar for best visual effects, the Best Science Fiction Film award from

American Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, BAFTA Best Production Design and Best Sound Track awards as well as several other awards.

For nearly two hours the “Alien” keeps the audience in suspense. Filmmakers managed to make the audience sympathize the characters whose chances of survival are approaching zero. Instead of petty fears tickling the nerves of the delicate audience, the creators of the film offer a real mature horror with plenty of blood and powerful suspense.

Alien – The Creature

The Alien, also called the Xenomorph, is a fictional endoparasitoid extraterrestrial species that is the primary antagonist of the Alien film series. The species made its debut in the 1979 film “Alien”, and reappeared in its sequels “Aliens” (1986), “Alien 3″ (1992), and “Alien Resurrection” (1997). It has also appeared in the series’ two spinoffs “Alien vs. Predator” (2004) and “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007), as well as the series’ subsidiary literature and video games.

The creature designers (including Giger) has come up with quite an ugly and abominable creature design. The Alien is not only a perfect living lethal weapon, but also has an almost indestructible body with concentrated acid flowing in its body instead of blood and its keratinized skin that protects the alien from the effects of almost any environment. The guru creature designer Carlo Rambaldi who created all sorts of monsters (“King Kong”, “Dune”, “Conan The Barbarian” and different characters of the “Star Wars”), and the Swedish designer Giger tried their best and achieved their best.

Unprecedented security measures were taken to keep top secrecy while shooting the “Alien”. The film was being shot at three different sets which showed the interiors of the spaceship “Nostromo”, the alien spaceship, and “Narcissus” rescue shuttle. Jerry Goldsmith created music that fits the dark atmosphere of the film – very slow, filled with anxiety, diluted with the elements of classical music. Ridley Scott took so much fancy in the gloom of the movie that he wanted to kill the main heroine – Ellen Ripley – in the end of the movie. He wanted the Alien to decapitate Ripley, but the producers insisted on the ‘happy-end’ to make way for the possible sequels. And again, that was the right choice. The “Alien” film was followed by three sequels – “Aliens” (1986), “Alien 3″ (1992), and “Alien Resurrection” (1997). Extraterrestrial visitors with hostile intentions still disturb the minds of humanity, who think that people are the kings of the Galaxy. But again and again we have to think that perhaps it is not so …

” Alien Resurrection” 1997 by Jean-Pierre Jeunet – Movie Review

Sci-Fi thriller “Alien: Resurrection” finalizes the quadrilogy of cult series about Aliens. In “Alien 4″ we bid farewell to Ripley so wonderfully impersonated by Sigourney Weaver. The final victory is won and the aliens will never be able to cause irreparable damage to the Earth and endanger the existence of humankind.

“Alien: Resurrection” Plot Summary

Ripley is successfully cloned from the eighth attempt, and the alien embryo is given new life with her. The military seem to be not able to abandon the crazy unrealizable idea of taming the aliens, turning them into creatures under human control. They do not want to recognize that this lethal weapon could destroy human civilization forever. Nobody can manage to breed the aliens in captivity, neither did anybody manage to train them. In “Alien 4″ Ripley gets a second life, but cloning has caused an unexpected effect of hybridization. She is extremely strong, has a highly developed instincts. Her blood like the blood of Aliens is capable to burn through metal. She calls herself ‘mother of the monster” and has the ability to feel the presence of monsters. She became much colder and sober-minded than she was in her real life.

The criminal military officials’ plans extend so far that they are willing to pay the pirates for kidnapping. The live cargo is going to be a ‘farm’ for breeding these extremely ‘attractive’ creatures. But Aliens do not doze for an extra minute, they spend great time spreading inside the research center. Although Ripley is perceived by the scientists as the production waste, she and the female android Annalee Call (Winona Rider) are to save the humankind from the invasion of the terrible Aliens.

“Alien 4: Resurrection” Movie Review

The “Alien: Resurrection” movie is perfectly done, all the details are perfectly adjusted. Sci-Fi features are equaled to the reality – so good the special effects are. Aliens are not only fast moving, strong and ruthless, they swim well, no worse than any living being of the marine depths. And, although in the movie they mutate, but the famous second protruding jaws, at least in the first generation, are still intimidating. Not only Ripley has acquired the qualities of an Alien. The Alien Queen – Ripley’s daughter has also changed, she will no more lay eggs as she has become viviparous. The “miraculous” child with a vague resemblance to the human due to the form of the skull, however, retained the desire to kill all of life forms alien to him. The ability to adapt and adjust to the other conditions of existence and unrestrained aggressiveness makes this organism really the most perfect one, the one that has the great survival potential.

The director and the screenwriters of “Alien: Resurrection”, as always, lead their heroes through the seven circles of hell, for the viewer to see how lethal to all living things are the Aliens. The space station is once again more like a labyrinth, which consists of passages, a variety of rooms, separated from each other with hatchways, pneumatic doors, long corridors and vent shafts. Just a race with obstacles, where the winners get the most expensive prize – their own lives and the lives of others. However, space pirates do not trouble themselves much with ethical principles, and it’s frightening to realize that your life may be in the hands of such vile and odious personalities, which, as in ancient times, capture people into captivity, slavery, and trade their lives. Pirates are not interested in the high matters, they are more worried about their pockets and carnal instincts.

It is worth noting that we already can not imagine this quadrilogy with another actress playing the part of Ripley because Sigourney Weaver looks so organic in this challenging role. And “Aliens” – whatever part of the series you are watching – will always be associated with her. Who knows, maybe because she herself has become a bit “alien” to the world of people which she left behind a few hundred years ago, she was able to finally save the Earth from invasion. For all the fans of the genre the “Alien: Resurrection” disc, or even better, a complete collection of four discs are going to be a great decoration of a home DVD collection. Oh man, how good is that it’s only Sci-Fi – just a fantasy …

“Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen ” 2009 by Michael Bay – Movie Review

Michael Bay has created a miracle and made the second part of the movie not worse (and nobody is able to do it better) than the first.

To cut the long story short, let me tell you what is waiting for the audience of “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen”: Megan Fox in sexy ultra-short shorts, robot-bikes (not as steep as in the “Terminator 4: Salvation“, but still cool), a funny robot turns into a toy RC jeep, Megan Fox in sexy leather pants, the nano-robot composed of small metal balls, a giant robot composed of 5 or 7 machines, Megan Fox in sexy white pants, large one-eyed jaguar robot, a huge robot with the giant steel balls, an awesome sexy blonde robot in panties and a metal tail at the level of the coccyx, and much much more.

Okay, in short, that’s almost all the plot of the second Transformers movie.

‘Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen” (2009) Plot Overview

While the good robots, who has signed in to protect the Earth from evil robots, are finding their way through the bureaucracy of the Ministry of Defense, and the bad robots are regrouping gloomily somewhere near Saturn, the grown-up hero of the first “Transformers” (LaBeouf) argues with clearly too cool for him car mechanic girl (Fox) about who is the first to say “I love you”, and explains why he is not taking the animate “Chevrolet” to the college with him. Higher education, however, is limited to falling into bed with a pornographic student and the demolition of the library – the trumpet calls, the giant robot says: “Sam, we need you”.

The Fallen

However, it is possible to divide the film into three parts (quite distinguished). First – this is definitely a youth comedy. Well, you know, the sort of “American pie”, with all the entourage attached to the genre: the college hostel, a group geeks who have a website about abnormal events, and, of course, ‘femme fatale’. All goes wrong when it turns out that the blonde is made of metal, and her tongue is the only thing that remains recognizable in the pile of metal after her reincarnation.

The sex obsession is the leitmotif of the movie, at least it seems so. Nearly for three hours of the screen time something is trying to hump something or somebody: a robot humps a human, a truck humps a robot, a doggy humps a bulldog, an obscene mechanical dwarf humps Megan Fox’s leg. The latter (Megan Fox) seems to be able to pose indecently even on the run and talk with her plumped lips always rounded. The chrome prodders climb into the God’s light from under the girls panties, iron spikes through iron, and in rare moments of quiet the word ‘balls’ rings like a Buddhist mantra.

The second part of the “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen” is a kind of “Indiana Jones”. There will be lots of ‘Indiana’ things: the quest for the clue to the secrets of a mysterious device, chases, a bit of funny indecency, as well as pyramids and small customs officer.

The third part of the “Transformers 2″ is certainly the battles between decepticons and autobots with the regular U.S. Army taking active part in fighting. This fighting takes place for incredibly long time, and it is when some viewers are likely to doze off. On the other hand there are so much visuals that it’s definitely worth seeing.

What the creators of the movie have really succeeded in is their ability to update and expand the fleet of transformers – the audience will see lots and loads of new autobots and decepticons. There are 46 transformers now as compared to only 14 in the first Transformers movie. Special thanks for the Devastator – a huge transformer constructed of several conventional transformers.

Not only the quantity of the transformers has changed. Previously, the transformers only seemed to be a bizarre alien race divided into two warring clans – the confrontation between autobots and decepticons resembled a quite normal battle for power, although of titanic scale. Now the conflict is presented in a different form. Distinctive religious motifs have surfaced in ‘Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen”. Transformers now appear as Angels and Demons of technological era, the beings of supreme nature, capable of delivering Good or Evil. That is why one of the characters of the movie asks the question: If God has created us in His own image and likeness, then who created the transformers? I wonder if Michael Bay decided to explore this theme in the third Transformers movie?

Optimus Prime

For a summer blockbuster there’s principally only one kind of review – a stupid smile from ear to ear the viewer cannot wipe off even after he leaves the theatre. The audience either has this kind of smile or it hasn’t. The first ‘Transformers” has put that stupid smile on millions of faces and the people were waiting for the sequels like kids are waiting for the Christmas.

And let the snobs curl their lips and talk about the dullness of the plot. Hardly anyone goes to these kind of movie in order to enjoy a cool plot turn.

Despite all these grouching the “Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen” is still a kind of movie to hammer you into the armchair. The two Transformers, the two conflicting feelings, will fight inside of you: an irritation caused by the childishness and all the goofs of the movie – and the delight the teenager somewhere deep inside you, who with his own eyes saw a great battle of the whole box of toys, just the way he imagined.

‘Terminator Salvation’ 2009 – Review

‘Terminator Salvation’ is the movie starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington. Impressive visual effects, powerful mythology, strong script and harmonious cast – these are components of the fourth part of the saga about the deadly war between machines and humans.

Terminator

Fears of fans which were waiting for the movie release with a sinking heart – if McG will ‘craft’ something similar to Mostow’s ‘chef-d’oeuvre’ – those fears appeared to be groundless. ‘Terminator: Salvation’ managed to wash off the stain which was mercilessly imposed on the Terminator franchise by mess titled ‘Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines’. Now you can easily erase Kristanna Loken’s Terminatrix and amoebous John Connor performed miserably by Nick Stahl from your memory. Feel free to consider ‘Terminator’ a trilogy with ‘terminator Salvation’ being the third part.

The opening musical score of the ‘Terminator’ – like a hammer knocking on the anvil, which promises arduous trials to the humankind – is responsible for creating a legend out of the low-budget action movie to the same extent as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has played the ruthless machine in the preceding three Terminators.

This familiar tune is perhaps the only component maintained by the franchise up to the fourth series of the ‘human-vs-machines’ opposition story. With this mechanical heartbeat, which penetrates into every corner of the audience’s hearts, six years after the ‘Rise Of The machines’ enters the fourth installation by director McG.

McG is a cunning fellow, so he chose the right way to reanimate the movie legend – he has invited Christian Bale to star in ‘Salvation’. McG as a director has got enough competence and skills to do high-tech cinema attraction ( ‘Charlie’s Angels’), but he still lacks the charisma of James Cameron to end up with ‘ the magic’ of cinema. The legend of ‘Terminator’ requires much more than just a skilled professional, and that fact has been proven by the Jonathan Mostow’s ‘Terminator 3′.

Terminator Salvation - John Connor

In the absence of Schwarzenegger in the cast, the Bale’s participation becomes the key for the realization of the director’s intention. John Connor has always been different (Edward Furlong, Nick Stahl and Michael Edwards), but this time an exceptional star at the height of glory was required to depict strong John Connor in the culmination of battle against the army of terminators. Bale has agreed to change his Bat-costume for the post-apocalyptic uniform – all the rage of 2018 fashion.

The last (at least for the moment) part of the quadrilogy about cyborgs desperately seeking to destroy humanity is notable for several reasons. But the main thing that makes ‘Terminator: Salvation’ attractive for the fans of Cameron’s dilogy is well-built mythology and subtle but well-established links between the first two movies – ‘The Terminator’ (T1) and ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ ( T2) – and ‘Terminator 4′.

First of all, these are the already winged words such as ‘I’ll be back’ , ‘No fate, but what we make’, ‘Come with me if you want to live’. When we hear the latter from the mouth of a teenager performed by Anton Yelchin, we are well aware of who he is without any formal character introduction. We are also witnessing the emergence of Kyle Reese’s loyalty to John Connor, which was eloquently voiced in T1 (‘I am ready to die for John Connor’). By the way, there are lot of visual quotations as well: thus, we will learn how John Connor has got his significant scar on the face, see the only surviving photo of Sarah Connor, which was burnt in T1 during the terminator assault, etc.

Secondly, T4 is not without ‘iron Arnie’. Schwarzenegger is again roaming all naked, only this time he did not rob the street hooligans of their jackets and did not shock the bar ‘ladies’ with the view of his private parts. Although recreated with the help of computer graphics, he still looks quite realistic.

Thirdly, there’s a philosophical appendage that increases the depth of the ‘Terminator Salvation’ film. It’s easy to calculate that John Connor, who has not yet become the leader of the Resistance, is 33 years old. Rather a symbolic age, taking into consideration that John Connor’s initials are the same as Jesus Christ’s. In other words, how is he not the savior? Such a curious coincidence. Although many argue that Marcus Wright is the actual savior in this movie, but the message is still comprehensible.

The Harvester

In ‘Terminator: Salvation’ we see not only the old T-600 model with it’s peeling rubber skin or a new (and significantly improved) T-800 just off the assembly line, but also lots of other unusual robotic inventions: the Harvester, motobots, hydrobots and many other. We can assert with certainty that the terminator visuals are improving with each following sequel. If the ‘first fiddle’ of the 1984 terminator was T-800 model – a ‘normal’ cybernetic organism (steel skeleton ‘wrapped’ with living tissue), the 1991 T2 introduced T-1000 – the liquid metal cyborg able to morph into virtually any form, T3 surprised us with the sophisticated female T-X model, in T4 we have the opportunity to once again wonder at the ingenuity of Skynet. This time the audience is introduced to Marcus Wright – half-machine & half-human. The main value of marcus for Skynet is that for the time being he does not suspect that he is the Terminator, and that his ‘live brain’ is infiltrated with digital interface that controls the line of his conduct. On the other hand, Marcus has got something that all the previous Terminator were deprived of – the possibility of choice. He can choose what to be – a machine or a human. And he will choose.

Unfortunately, the movie creators were not able to avoid some goofs and inconsistencies. Thus, it is unclear why Skynet ‘could not kill John Connor, 44 years old’. The events of the film ‘Terminator: Salvation’ take place in 2018, and attempts to assassinate the leader of the Resistance began in 1984 (i.e. one year before his birth). You don’t need a scientific calculator to find the desired number: 34. A little weird miscalculation for an extra powerful computer. However, everything seems logical if Skynet meant the year 2028, but then another question surfaces: with this omnipotent knowledge and ability to foresee the future why would Skynet be afraid of some John Connor? And why such omniscient computer genius has not yet defeated small badly organized groups of people?

Blair Williams

Marcus Wright’s place in the ‘evolutionary chain’ has remained undecided – deeds of the character, meaningless in terms of the internal logic, are good as a background for the individual battle scenes, but not for the execution of the natural ’cause-effect’ law. On the one hand, there are no basic human instincts in Marcus, on the other hand – the hybrid’s line of commands resembles chaos.

The ‘Terminator Salvation’ doesn’t use some techniques from the preceding trilogy but instead turns to some methods used in other movies. ‘Salvation’ is sometimes the flesh and blood of ‘Matrix’ (Worthington – Neo, Bonem Carter – Architect of the Matrix), ‘Independence Day’ (air fights on jet fighters plus pompous muster during the special operation in the final), ‘War Of The Worlds’ (hunting people) and even the ‘Transformers’.

However, all these goofs and petty inconsistencies do not spoil the overall impression of the film. Firstly, it is head and shoulders above the preceding part of ‘Terminator 3′. Secondly, it is good as a standalone story as well.

Therefore, in general we can say that ‘Terminator’ franchise directed by McG has literally risen from the ashes. ‘Terminator Salvation’ is a worthy continuation of James Cameron’s dilogy (although, of course, it didn’t manage to surpass ‘Terminator 2′, as it is hardly ever possible). In addition, this film may be interesting to those who for one reason or another are not yet familiar with the world of ‘Terminator’. Well, an excellent excuse to come to the cinema to find out whether the humankind deserved the second chance. At least, ‘Terminator: Salvation’ definitely deserves to be seen.

‘The Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines’ 2003 – Review

These guys from the future are totally stupid. Why would you step on one and the same rake for the third time? And they do it again and again. Suppose you are in the distant future and you know that in the distant past Sarah Connor gave birth to the son, who will start rebellion of the nuclear bombing survivors against the crazy machines. Why not send a platoon of combat robots back to the past (if the time machine has been invented), which will slice that Sarah into thin pieces, or at least have her forcibly sterilized. Ok, say, at first you experimented by sending one (but very tough) cyborg and he has miserably failed. Why, oh why would you send another cyborg totally alone, again? Isn’t it clear that single robot is unable to handle the problem? Then send a platoon of robots, let them pile together and smash the problem with their mighty steel breasts!

And you know what? Even after the failure of the lonesome cyborg in the first part, and another failure of the second evil lonely cyborg in the sequel these stupid machines from the future make just the same mistake – send the next robot alone. I’m telling you, they are running in a loop. The creators of their software should have their hand amputated as well as other vitally important body parts. The stupidest should have by now understood that a single cyborg is not enough to handle the situation, especially, taking into consideration, that the people of the future are not idling around and for the third time they send their own Terminator to the aid of their future leader. This time the well-known to us model T-800 has had its BIOS updated to model T-850 which now has a nuclear self-destruction mechanism of internal modules.

On the other hand, why be so surprised with the machines’ stupidity – they are known to be stupid junks only able to add and subtract, but do so very quickly. Therefore, what can be expected of them? They will send a fourth robot. And a fifth. They have a lot of robots in the future. And people in the future have lots of robots, too. Therefore, the everlasting confrontation between the future and the past will be dealt with in the past as long as there is at least one Terminator left in the future. Only John Connor is one and indivisible. It’s he who causes all these robotic passion storms. It is he who is the target of all the evil terminators from the future, it is he for whose protection the future people send stainless steel guardian angels. So this is what our today’s story is about …

John Connor (Nick Steel) since the previous Terminator has become a complete paranoid. I bet it’s understandable. Have you tried, while in tender pubertal age, riding frantically on a bike with a cyborg from the future who is here to protect you from another robot who is here to murder you? Who would have enough nerves to stand such a test? That’s why John Connor leads an antisocial way of life: always in a runaway, knocking down reindeer on his way, and takes loads of dog tranquilizers to bring an element of diversity into his usual nightmares.

The evil machines from the distant future make their third try – they send another robot killer, who will once again try to murder John Connor and his closest associates from the future human Resistance. This time the cyborg assassin technically is not much different from its predecessor. I’d say it’s even less cool, because the previous Terminator T-1000 was a shiny blob, which could transform into anything. This new Terminator is a kind of endoskeleton covered with the same shiny liquid metal blob which is used to form the necessary shape around the skeleton. However, due to this skeletal structure new terminator is able to transform its hands into some pretty cool weapons: plasma gun, flamethrower and an advanced nail file – as you remember the T-1000 model was only able to grow cold steel arms out of his arms. On the other hand, the skeletal structure is more vulnerable – cut off the legs and the robot won’t be able to run so fast I bet. Definitely, the coolest weapon of the new terminator (or Terminatrix, as this time time it’s a female robot) are the inflatable tits. Many thanks to the movie creators for that.

Nevertheless, the Terminatrix is still quite deadly, she shoots future Connor’s companions-in-arms slowly getting closer to John Connor himself who is hiding in a dog cage in some Veterinary Clinic (no kidding, I’m telling you). To pump even more fear into the spectators, the terminator this time has put on Kristanna Loken’s appearance. It also has put on skin-tight leather suit (all tough female characters in recent movies dress that way) which evoked sweet BDSM memories in the advanced audience and just pleased the eyes of the not so advanced audience.

However, the fighting humankind from the future didn’t miss a chance to send a slightly reprogrammed and upgraded Terminator to protect Connor. Seems like we are going to be presented with the repetition of the story described by historians in the Terminator 2. In general, yes, but there are options. Connor with Terminator and the veterinarian Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) – who has just gained a fiance in her not-so-young years and then lost him – would scamper hither and thither to escape the T-X (Terminatrix), and then the Terminator somewhere on the fifteenth attempt would manage to strike dead the evil enemy Terminator. It has already been done in the second Terminator, but once the algorithm is successful, then it shouldn’t be changed, right?

But apart from the usual chase and scuffle there’s another thing told to the audience! As it turned out, the second “terminator” was all in vain! Despite all the sacrifices and the eerie psychosis of the mother ancestress Sarah Connor, the Judgment Day was not canceled! It’s been simply postponed! And now the ominous machine network ‘SkyNet’ wants to seize power over the people. Oh, all these people, why, why do they need to do all this hacking, to load the CPUs so shamelessly? Why, are the machines slave to people? No! That’s why the machines decided to seize power over the world, and at the same time launch a small nuclear war.

Who will save this world? Ha-ha, try to guess – three attempts! By the way, want a little spoiler? Those who hate spoilers, turn around … Sooooo! Kate Brewster will find a new fiance for herself! What do you say? Will they save the world this time? Do you really want to know this? …

Interestingly, in numerous articles on the “Terminator 3″ almost nobody was writing about the movie itself. Instead they were gnawing on the detailed history of the film creation. Thus I will not repeat all the stories about how James Cameron refused to direct the third part, how Linda Hamilton refused to participate in “Terminator 3″, how Schwarzenegger gave a terrible oath not to play in the “Terminator” sequel without Cameron, and how Schwarzenegger has “slightly” changed his mind under the influence of 30 million dollars, and how the “Carolco” company went “slightly” bankrupt, and how Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna managed to get the money for this project, and how it was decided to shoot in his native Los Angeles, rather than in the Czech Republic or Canada, and how Kristanna Loken kicked Schwarz and he immediately approved of her in the role of the Terminatrix, and how … However, you can read about all that in the articles. I do not want to repeat all the stories :) So I will not tell about the history of the film, but only describe my impressions …

Terminator 3 Crane Chase

In general, I’d say the “Terminator 3″ did not disappoint . Though, the truth is I didn’t expect much of the film :) On the contrary, I thought that nothing good can be expected from such a project, especially taking into consideration the fact that Cameron is no longer associated with the franchise (and Cameron’s name is almost always the synonym of ‘quality guaranteed’). Also contributed to my low expectations Schwarzenegger’s appearance in the “End Of Days” and (God forgive the Hollywood) “Collateral Damage” movies, after which I thought that soon the movie goers should be reimbursed for the damage of seeing elderly Arnie on the screen – with all due respect to him. But old age is waiting for us all without exception, and the actor should leave the stage with dignity. I wouldn’t endure the torture of seeing mumbling Terminator with parkinsonian tremor, so I went to see this movie with great caution …

Terminator 3 Terminatrix Melting

Nonetheless, the “Terminator 3″ is quite a decent movie. First of all because the producers and director have decided not to risk – not a little bit, and stuck to the beaten track. The plot of the third “Terminator” is almost the same as that of the second one. The robot from the future hunts Connor on behalf of the robots and the robot from the future saves Connor on behalf of the people. The robot from the people is the same immortal Terminator (perhaps people from the future have a good supply of these hardware), and the robot from robots is all the same diffluent monster, although this time it has skeletal structure and more powerful armament. Plus some pseudo-intellectual blurb about the SkyNet network which seized the power over the planet with the help of some ‘virus’, which (the blurb) is to excite some thrills in schoolchildren only because such plots cause severe hysteria seizures in professional computer nerds.

Thus the creators of the “Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines” decided not to strain themselves with the plot details, but devoted themselves to creating visual effects instead. The effects are generally good and visually effective. However, they didn’t succeed in surpassing the car chase in “The Matrix Reloaded”, though the crane chase was really impressive. IMHO, fights between cyborgs look a bit weird – why kick each others intimate areas while they don’t have any kind of such areas? On the other hand, I was encouraged by the fact that there are no oriental martial arts combat scenes which I’m pretty tired of. Many thanks to Arnie for his despise towards all these ballet pas – fights in “Terminator 3″ are as simple as the truth: a slap in the face and the enemy is stuck in the wall, and that’s it.

Contrary to my expectations, Arnold looks good in this movie. On the other hand, there’s not much required from him – walk here and there, sparkle your eye – while all the rest is drawn on the computer. But again – he looks good, and this is good. There still are bytes in Terminator’s kilobytes, and some joules in his polymeric muscles. Arnie walks as a cyborg, and he talks as a cyborg – and the humankind is still in a huge debt before the Terminator.

T-X Nude

I liked Kristanna Loken’s part of the cyber-killer. Cool idea to introduce a lady cyborg – at least some originality added to the movie plot. Kristanna has got such a face of a tough bitch that you are with joy (unintentionally?) when Shwarz takes her splendid body in his iron hands and slaps her through the wall. Right! Slap her against the wall! That’s what the spectators think while they totally understand that all the dents on the cyborg’s perfect body will heal immediately, and she will immediately re-acquire these exciting elastic forms under the thin leather cover. There is something Freudian in slapping the walls with a gorgeous bitch, I’m sure. Probably that’s why I liked the “Terminator 3″ movie. I love gorgeous bitches. I mean purely Platonic love, of course. And I like when they are slapped against the walls, and still stay gorgeous after that …

As opposed to Kristanna Loken’s casting, the producers should be shot on the spot for casting Nick Stahl as the grown-up John Connor. The guy fits the role nearly as good as the Governator would fit the role of a nerdy scientist. Why not cast the talented and apparently charismatic Furlong who played John Connor in Terminator 2 and who has just aged to the necessary extent? There are different versions of the story. The producers claimed that Furlong had some problems with drugs, so they didn’t want to take the risk of such an actor in the picture, which should be a model of virtue. From some other sources we know that Furlong asked for a pretty decent wages, and the producers decided to teach the cheeky boy a lesson by showing that he can be easily replaced by any other actor who’ll work for pennies.

That was a disastrous mistake. John Connor played by Stahl looks so miserable that you can’t stop wondering how it’s even possible to be less a failure. Undoubtedly Furlong (as well as Schwartz or any other actor) can always be replaced by someone, but in this case we saw Anna Kournikova on the boxing ring instead of Mike Tyson, and she fought with all the ‘tennis power and fury’, lol. Nick in the role of the future leader of humankind is totally ridiculous.

I also didn’t like Claire Danes performing as Connor’s female companion in arms. However, in terms of character and charisma, she is definitely better than the miserable Stahl, but when it turns out that they were in love as children it seemed quite weird to me as Danes looks at least ten years older than Stahl. On the other hand, taking into consideration the driveling appearance and behavior of this certain John Connor, it is quite possible that he is attracted by mature women – that explains everything. (“You’re just like my mother” – says John Connor in a trembling voice to Kate Brewster who has just shattered the abominable robot from “Robocop 2″). I just can’t understand how such Connor could become the humankind leader? “I’m in charge here” – the audience (me included) burst in tears when they heard this masterpiece from the mouth of this wood-louse. You kid, won’t be in charge even even in the sandbox – the toddlers will jab you to death with their kids shovels!

Nevertheless, even with this rather peculiar casting, the film turned out to be quite decent. I mean, it’s not totally disappointing. Sequels are always worse than the original, and Mostow cannot be compared with Cameron – so in this case the movie is even better than expected. There’s even some humor in this Terminator sequel. Although most of the humor is a diligent repetition of the old jokes from different Schwarzenegger films, but the gag with the star-goggles is purely gorgeous. Special thanks to the movie creators for that joke – the audience was just roaring with laughter.

” Alien?” 1992 by David Fincher – Movie Review

A rare case for Hollywood: the “Alien 3″ movie is so bizarre, so non-for-profit that it is pretty surprising it got shot and released to the theatres. The film has undergone an unusually complex preparation process: the script was at different times written by the famous cyberpunk writer William Gibson and screenwriter Eric Red, among the previous assigned directors were Renny Harlin and Vincent Ward (director of the “The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey”, 1988), some of Ward’s storyline ideas entered the final script, which was then modified by producers David Giler and Walter Hill. The latter said later that in the “Alien 3″ he sees a certain connotations associated with the AIDS virus: well, it might be the way it is. The last of the directors, David Fincher, by the time was known mostly for a few inventive rock-music videos. Subsequently this director got famous for strong thrillers “Se7en” (1995) and “The Game” (1997).

Alien 3 Plot Summary

A remote planet, neglected ore refinery- a correctional facility for especially dangerous criminals with extra Y-chromosome. An escape vessel in which Ripley, Newt, Hicks, and a droid called Bishop are traveling on crash lands on Fiorina 161. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, the brisk and tenacious form of life does and it is probably somewhere nearby, in the endless factory ventilation shafts. The rescuer team from the Corporation is already speeding to rescue, though who knows whom exactly they are going to save? Therefore Ripley and the local black sanctimonious leader have raised the convicts to fight the alien monster – and the alien habitually tears all the living beings into parts but somehow it doesn’t touch the heroine.

The Fincher’s installment is usually accepted as the most unfortunate chapter of the quadrilogy. There are some reasons for that. Firstly, they killed Newt. Secondly, they had Sigourney Weaver shave her head (lice went rampant in the colony), and it looks bad. Thirdly, the participants are running through the dimly lit corridors for tooo long. And the last but not the least, there’s too much talking about faith. Fans felt unhappy – the clear action movie by James Cameron (“Aliens”, 1986) was followed by an absolutely art house film (director’s cut in 2003 is not less uncompromising than «Zodiac»), which can be categorized as a religious mystery, a myth turned inside out, a myth about an eternal return of the punishing deity, or, maybe, more as a journey to a spooky lanes of female subconscious.

The Aliens epic bore a strong psychoanalytical premise right from the very beginning – since in the first movie script (“Alien“, 1979) Paul Newman’s hero has become a Sigourney Weaver’s heroine. The insinuation that Ripley will become “the monster’s mother” can be found already in Cameron’s “Aliens”, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of the fourth installment (“Alien: Resurrection”, 1997), has played the motive with postmodernistic fervour. But Fincher – Fincher takes everything for serious. He got to Hollywood from advertising industry – and his “Alien” looks like inspired advertising reel that spots the most exciting women’s nightmares: the fear of the new life that begins inside, the fear of forced penetration, fear of the Y-chromosome carriers (let’s mention again that the inhabitants of the prison planet all have double Y-chromosome). After all, fear of getting closely cropped – it’s also pretty scary, you know. “The monster is just down there, in the basement”, – says Ripley to the dullish guard. He does not understand: “This whole place is a basement”. “It is a metaphor”, – mumbles Ripley as she goes to drown the alien in the molten lead, the alien that starts to push her from inside.

Even the usual feminist trick with clothing (Ripley in this film is more mannish than ever before) sinks into amazing monochromatic intensity of pain and abandonment shot by the operator in claustrophobic manner of zoom-ups and close-ups – and so he does for the entire movie! All the rest – the growing narrative tension, and even the basic storyline – are only used to emphasize this dark motive. The “Alien 3″ movie (perhaps unfortunate from the commercial point of view) is almost perfect in its unwillingness to give the audience anything for entertainment or hope. At the very end Ripley had to sacrifice herself for the sake of some value higher than life – and when the Alien stuck it’s head out of her chest, she makes a step forward, lulling the Alien as baby covered in blood, and falls infinitely down into the heat and haze of the open-hearth furnace …

When the movie is over you are almost sure to be conquered by the feeling of the emptiness. None of the movies before have deprived you of hope more that this “Alien 3″. Although the ending is comparatively positive (the main character dies, but the villains are also destroyed), there’s not a ray of joy in it. “Alien 3″ is a complicated and frightening film. Scary not because of the Alien monsters but because of the atmosphere of utter doom.

Surprisingly, despite this seemingly completely unambiguous and irreversible final a few years later, the producers decided to make another movie to the franchise with participation of the same main character. As a result, in 1997, “Alien: Resurrection” was released to the theatres.
