An All American Great Classic!!!

This is truly an all American excellent movie! To know that this production was not only in on film, but also in real life, a ‘win or lose’ project for the then unknown Sylvester Stallone only makes this film more lovable. It tells the story of a unknown prize fighter who doesn’t really have a life worth envying. Suddenly he gets his big chance when the world champion seeks a new challenger, as the challenger he had has to bail out, due to an injury. Rocky goes for it, but in the end he knows he’s not in the same league as the champ. The true victory is Rocky’s new gains self respect and love for his girlfriend Adrian. This film has a really cool 70’s vibe and for me the locations use (Philadelphia) fit the film perfect. It was filmed during winter 1976 and that’s something you can actually see. The true realism and great acting performances (plus the unforgettable soundtrack) makes this a film worthwhile. A must see definitely!! My favourite scene is still the one where Rocky goes out for his first morning run. He gets up at 4 A.M. and sets out into the cold, frozen streets of morning hour Philadelphia. The mood, music and the winterish landscape of a city frozen up are brought to the screen with such a transparant touch.. It still chi lls my skin everytime I watch it! If you haven’t seen this one, shame, shame shame!!! Go out and rent or (even better) buy the DVD! One of the best American films of the 1970’s (and that’s something no one can deny)!

Realistic, human, dramatic and touching, Rocky deserves the Oscar for Best Picture it got.

A mediocre and down-on-his luck boxer has a chance of a lifetime when the boastful Heavyweight Champion of the World ends up picking him as his opponent for a bout scheduled to commemorate the Independence of the United States. For the Champ and for the rest of the world, the bout is nothing more than a publicity stunt but for Rocky, it’s the last chance he got to prove to himself that he isn’t a born-loser. With the help of his old trainer and the love of a woman, he is determined to go the distance with the Champion at any cost. Brilliant and moving piece of art directed by the always competent John G. Avildsen, Rocky is a beautifully written and told story about determination, courage and the importance of finding self-respect and pride inside ourselves

The movie conquered a special place in the film history and even after more than 25 years after the original release, carries the same power and dramatic charge it had in 1976.

With a cost of less than one million dollars, director John Avildsen delivered with mastery the job of a life time, giving to us unforgettable moments (Rocky’s training montage and Rocky and Apollo’s final fight send chills down my spine – courtesy of the unbeatable score by Bill Conti) that will live forever. Terrific performances by the whole cast and the finest work Sylvester Stallone ever did

Being with the dramatic scenes (like the confrontation between Rocky and Mickey), being with the physical scenes (when Rocky is getting beaten up brutally by an unstoppable Apollo), Stallone showed that he is one great actor. The supporting actors had, each one of them,a special moment to shine: Talia Shire has her special moment during that scene in which she watches with painful dismay a scared and bloodied Rocky struggling to get up after being floored by the champion. Carl Weathers,as an arrogant and aggressive champion, shines during the harrowing minutes of the bout’s 14th round, when Apollo corners Rocky and tags his face with uncountable quick jabs. You don’t really see the actor Weathers during that particular moment, you see the ‘boxer Weathers’, he incorporated a boastful Muhammad Ali-clone with perfection. The hungry stare that Apollo gives to Rocky while destroying his face with the quick jabs are downright real and scary

It’s beyond me why Weathers never became a movie star. Realistic, human, dramatic and touching, Rocky deserves the Oscar for Best Picture it got.
