“Rescue Dawn” Movie Review

“Rescue Dawn” Plot Summary

A US Fighter pilot’s epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War.

Best movie of the year

It really was the best movie I’ve seen all year- narrowly beating The Departed (VERY narrow indeed).

I saw this at the second showing, so I wasn’t there for Bale or Davies or Herzog, but the movie was obviously worth it. I am very eagerly anticipating its theatrical release. Oscar buzz is good for this so far, but I’m afraid with the release date set for early 2007 that might not happen

Herzog expertly adapted his documentary into a full-fledged narrative that is both thrilling and heartbreaking (Steve Zahn… How awesome). This is worth every penny you pay for the ticket

See it ASAP.

Great

Rescue Dawn (2006) **** (out of 4) Werner Herzog’s fictionalized film version of his true-life documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly stars Christian Bale as Dieter, a U.S. pilot who gets shot down over Laos during Vietnam and must try and find a way to escape the prison camp. When I first saw the trailer to this film I didn’t know a thing about it and I rolled my eyes asking myself if we really needed another war film. Then, I noticed it was Herzog who directed it and I got excited thinking of what he might do with the film. We’ve seen countless war movies but this one here goes its own path and really doesn’t have a single thing to do with war but instead the mental state of the main characters. Herzog has had a terrific career of dwelling into madness and he hits another home run with this exceptionally well made film that is very low key in nature but hits all the right notes to make it a highly emotional film. Bale is really becoming one of the most impressive actors out there and his performance here deserves, at the very least, an Oscar nomination. He handles the physical stuff very well but the way he develops this character is something truly wonderful to watch. The weight lose was quite amazing to see and how he breaks down only to rebuild himself makes this one of the best performances of the year. Steve Zahn is equally as impressive as the weaker POW who befriends Dieter. Herzog stays very close to his roots in making the film very slow moving but that’s certainly not a bash against the film. It takes its time in telling the story and by doing this Herzog puts the viewer right there in the action so much that you can feel the heat of the sun and feel the hunger of the POWs. There’s very little action as we hardly ever see the impact of anything but instead we just get a visual sense in our heads while our minds does the rest of the work. The way Herzog has his camera floating through the air picking up the sense of the jungle is quite amazing and makes this among the best work of his career. There could have been so many cliches in this film but just when you think you know where the film is going Herzog takes it in another direction to make this film seem original and unlike any other film of its type. Even the ending is done in a way that you can’t help but get choked up.

An incredible true story

As a child Dieter Dengler witnessed the senseless allied bombing of his small German town in World War II. His surprising reaction (at least surprising to me) to seeing a pilot in one of the planes was to realize that he wanted to fly. He came to the United States, enlisted in the Navy and became a pilot. Before he knew it he was stationed on a carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin at the beginning of the escalation of the Vietnam war. On his first bombing mission over Laos (which was top secret and a violation of the neutrality of Laos) in January of 1965, he was shot down and captured. This movie covers his stay in a prison camp and his ultimate escape and rescue

Perhaps Werner Herzog is the ideal person to direct this saga, filmed on location in the jungles of Tailand. He puts you right in the thick of things. You see the brutal treatment of the prisoners and feel the oppressive heat. After the escape you are right there hacking your way through the dense forest and floating downstream on a raft (filmed alongside the raft). While not near what Dengler went through you sense that filming this was a grueling effort for the actors and director. One has to think that Herzog has a masochistic streak in him

Christian Bale commits to another performance where he undergoes dramatic weight loss. He is a good choice to play Dengler – he has a great ability to portray just the proper hint of craziness that I am sure that Dengler must have had in order to conceive of plotting the escape and thinking that he could actually make it to rescue by slashing his way through the forest. As one of the other prisoners says to him, ‘You don’t understand, the forest *is* the prison.”Rescue Dawn’ is a reenactment of the story that Dengler told in Herzog’s documentary ‘Little Dieter Needs to Fly.’ If you see one of these films without the other, then you are not getting the whole story about Dengler. The two films complement each other nicely. It’s probably best to see the documentary second, since it’s a treat to see Dengler in the flesh and appreciate some of the qualities of this unique man not seen in ‘Rescue Dawn,’ like his humor and his lust for life. While ‘Rescue Dawn’ is expertly filmed it is pretty straightforward realism with a somewhat exaggerated Hollywood ending. The documentary reveals a bit more of Herzog the poet

Common to both films is documentary footage of a bombing in Vietnam, taken from the bombing plane. It’s one of those things you see that has a certain dreamy beauty to it, but horrifies on reflection.
