“Hunger” Movie Review
“Hunger” Plot Summary
The last six weeks of the life of the Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands.
Grim but Good
Film about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in 1981 but although the film is bookended by some on screen text that puts it in its historical and political context, it is mostly concerned with the actions of the individuals involved the guards and the prisoners
For the majority of the film there is hardly any speech, you just see the very grim day-to-day reality – except for the key scene of the film which is a conversation between Sands and a priest which is done in two long, unmoving takes
It’s quite a powerful film, and very hard to watch in places. It reminded me of ‘Downfall’ in some ways a good film but not one I’d want to see again anytime soon.

film of the year
A complete masterpiece. How can a film novice make a film his good? It defies belief. Steve McQueen has surely now found his real vocation. A lot of reviewers missed the point of the whole thing, seeing it as being ‘about Northern Ireland’ – it isn’t. Its about people, humanity, and what they do to each other. It has no sectarian thread. It is not sympathetic to a cause but shows symptoms which arise from a cause. its about inhumanity, suffering, dignity and indignity. The silence of the film is remarkable, providing a stark and bleak background for scenes of barbarism and tribalism on both sides. Slowly unwound scenes of brilliant photography stick indelibly in my mind. At one point even the wheels of excrement on the walls take on a bizarre dark beauty, even as they are hosed down. Fassbinder is astonishing, even down to starving himself for the role it seems. This is not a fun night out, but it IS an extraordinary film.

The hunger strikes of 1981 hold a grim fascination for me. The whole Northern Ireland thing does. I remember a conversation in a 1970 railway carriage between two Englishmen discussing the start of ‘The Troubles’ in the late sixties, only to be interrupted by an waking Irish voice in the corner explaining that ‘The Troubles’ started long before. Silence ensued
Then of course my own innocent visit in 1971, leaving the cinema early because I wasn’t sure what the protocol would be if the National Anthem was played
So near, yet so far. How fabulous it was to work there last year. A wonderful city, Belfast
But back to the film. Looking back, my initial assessment of 6/10 is based on what was missing. (Back to my own recollections here.) A Member of Parliament starved to death. I know. ‘He chose to take his own life. It was a choice that his organisation did not allow to many of its victims’ His death was followed by another. And another. And another. And another. Ten. Ten people starved themselves to death. These are my memories. Rushed through in Steve McQueen’s film, and I felt cheated because of this
However. Perhaps nevertheless. A fascinating film structure. Three distinct Acts, with tons of style squeezing dialogue is a single shot in Act 2.
No, I’m sticking with 6/10 on principle but go see
