“Gangs of New York” Movie Review

“Gangs of New York” Plot Summary

In 1863, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.

    Gruesome, Yet Very Good!

When I saw this movie, I was both grossed out and amazed. It’s a beautiful movie. The cinematography is very well done, and the acting is very good, too. DiCaprio gives a very good performance, and Diaz strays beyond her usual ‘pretty-girl’ roll, and does it very well. Day-Lewis’s character is very dynamic and Henry Thomas does a very good performance as DiCaprio’s friend. Just a warning for those who haven’t seen this movie: if you don’t like to watch very bloody fight scenes or watch people die in some pretty uncomfortable ways, don’t see this. The movie is very rough and seems exaggerated. All the same, I like it a lot.

    Brilliant, captivating, exciting

I saw this movie about five years ago, and watched it again in 2009 on a whim. I was pleasantly reminded of why I had such great memories of it to begin with

Leo shows us again why he’s a great leading man, as a young Irish immigrant seeking to avenge his father’s death. Daniel Day-Lewis instilled fear at every moment, and convinced me to check out his other work. Knives, guns, and blunt objects are abound as immigrants and ‘natives’ clash. It’s funny how much this movie exposes those that think they are the ‘true American natives’ when really, everyone was an immigrant at one point

I also enjoyed how three different people were praying to the same God for polar-opposite intentions. It showed how God can be used as an excuse for… anything, including battle (sound familiar?).Overall, this movie was stellar. It was exciting at almost all times and exposed the grimy, ruthless side of 1860’s NYC. 9/10

    Great acting by…………..

The great acting by Daniel Day-Lewis is what is making this movie interesting. For the rest: a far to beautiful Cameron Diaz for the female role (people surely did not look this healthy in those days), bad special effects and photography, a very slow story, uninteresting development of the script and also very predictable. Halfway I wished it was over. Too bad. Think you could have done better thinking about what part of the important history it covers.
