“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Movie Review
“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Plot Summary
An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.
Surprisingly Good!
Chuck Barris is in bits. His life has been a sham and after the crazy seventies and the start of the excessive eighties, after contemplating suicide, he decides to write down the bizarre tale of his unbelievable life. After being a joke at school and a joke in his teens to the opposite sex, he catches onto the idea that if you are part of the entertainment industry chicks will find you irresistible. After rising through the ranks of the burgeoning TV industry he is approached by a shadowy figure who asks if he’d be interested in helping his country against the forces of communism that threaten Europe, and could, if successful there, threaten the United States itself
For reasons best known to himself, Chuck decides to go for it, maybe for a laugh, maybe to see what the job entails, but as time goes by he realises that his moral flexibility and creative talents may well have found an excellent duel purpose. As he devises a variety of inane shows he finds it exceedingly difficult to mask his covert actions. Added to this he meets a beautiful young woman who seems to like him for who he is, which makes the disturbing secret that he works as a Government Spook as is responsible for a number of assassinations even more difficult to live with
As his life goes on and he becomes a star with the likes of the Gong Show, and his life as a spook is threatened by a mole on the inside Chuck has to delve within himself and figure out exactly what he wants to do with his life, and more importantly, not die
Now let’s cut to the chase here, this film is very good. Sam Rockwell is a revelation as Chuck Barris and his performance is so good it’s frightening. He is amazing in this role and bearing in mind how shockingly awful he was in Charlie’s Angels it makes of an even more surprising film. George Clooney’s direction is assured and well handled and the combination of his skills with the camera and Charlie Kauffman’s brilliantly realised script is something that you just don’t expect to work, but work it does. Clooney wisely elects to keep his supporting role to a minimum and it helps the piece tremendously, even a couple of cameos from close friends don’t spoil what is one of the best directorial debuts ever
Whether Chuck Barris’ story of his life is true or not, this is a top-notch movie that exceeds all expectations and is yet another cinematic masterclass from Charlie Kauffman that, in the hands of George Clooney, becomes another great movie about choices and identity

An incredible story…
Watching the credits of Confessions one may wonder if George Clooney’s filmed it without any help. I mean, Charlie Kauffman wrote the script, and Soderbergh is one of the producers. I think there’s no doubt them both gave a hand to Clooney. The influence of Coen Bros. is quite obvious (Clooney is a good friend of them, and has worked in two of their movies),Clooney has chosen an outstanding: one of the most popular TV producers in the 70’s (Chuck Barris) which worked as a CIA agent at the same time. A real story. Maybe one of the advantages of been an actor-director is that you make a good actors selection, and you take them just where you want. That way Dick Clark, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, veteran Rutger Hauer, are just great (especially Clark -though he abuses a little bit of his ‘whispering’-). The movie it’s been constructed as a pseudo-documentary: we saw the people that took part in the story telling us about Barris. Also we hear the voice over of Barris all along the film. The plot is a little confuse sometimes, and sometimes Clooney slows down more than necessary. I can’t heklp thinking that, with this story, a more experimented director woul have made a superb film. So, George Clooney turns up as a promising filmmaker, so classy (as himself). We’ll see if that promise becomes a reality
My rate: 7/10

Wonderful
I’m not sure why ‘Aviator’ by Martin Scorsese was nominated for Oscars, but ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’ was not – it is a truly interesting movie, extremely well-acted, extraordinarily written and directed. Is it a ‘biopic’? What is ‘true’ and what is ‘false’ in it? WHO CARES? IT’S A MOVIE NOT A HISTORY BOOK!Chuck Barris, simultaneously the lowest purveyor of puerile entertainment AND a CIA hit-man, is examined here, both legitimately (with documentary-style interviews with people who knew him) and fictionally (for example, sightings of his past CIA ‘hits’ in the audience of his TV ‘hit’ ). The camera angles are always interesting, without detracting from the story. The lighting and colors are wonderful – Clooney uses the over-the-top, ‘aren’t we having FUN?!’ too-loud colors and design of 1960s and 70s game shows to great advantage. Not only do you feel that the garishness of TV could drive you utterly crazy, but the juxtaposition of the harshness of innocent TV with the seductive lighting of the CIA hits (even East Berlin looks sexy) is simply genius
This is a movie to sink into – to simply enjoy and be surprised by, to have your mind, ironically, challenged and engaged, and to revel in masterful acting, writing and directing.
