“Gangs of New York” Plot Summary

In 1863, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.

    Gruesome, Yet Very Good!

When I saw this movie, I was both grossed out and amazed. It’s a beautiful movie. The cinematography is very well done, and the acting is very good, too. DiCaprio gives a very good performance, and Diaz strays beyond her usual ‘pretty-girl’ roll, and does it very well. Day-Lewis’s character is very dynamic and Henry Thomas does a very good performance as DiCaprio’s friend. Just a warning for those who haven’t seen this movie: if you don’t like to watch very bloody fight scenes or watch people die in some pretty uncomfortable ways, don’t see this. The movie is very rough and seems exaggerated. All the same, I like it a lot.

“Letters from Iwo Jima” Plot Summary

The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.

    A totally unforgettable movie experience.

This is quite simply one of the best movies i have ever seen. It left me speechless and in tears. A genuine masterpiece, beautifully shot, beautifully cast, wonderfully acted. There’s not much more I can say right now, but I urge you most strongly NOT to miss this movie. Eastwood’s direction is impeccable; he quietly and unerringly leads us through the developing crisis of the American assault on the island, and the desperate Japanese defence. There are so many fine performances here, so many unforgettable moments. A measure of the quality of Eastwood’s direction is that although the dialogue is almost entirely Japanese supported by English sub-titles, by the end of the film I had entirely ceased to be aware of that fact. This is a really wonderful film; please don’t miss it.

    “Amistad” Plot Summary

About a 1839 mutiny aboard a slave ship that is traveling towards the northeastern coast of America. Much of the story involves a court-room drama about the free man who led the revolt. add synopsis

A beautiful film about the struggle to keep our most basic rightfreedom

This film is so moving, I’m having trouble coming up with the appropriate words to describe it. It goes without saying that Spielberg’s direction is nothing short of spectacular. I was thoroughly engrossed in the movie throughout. The realism of the scenes on the slave ship speak volumes. And the performances given by Matthew McConaughey and Anthony Hopkins were some of the best of their respective careers. And Djimon Hounsou (Cinque) touched me to the core depths of my heart. The conversation between him and his friend about the Bible was particularly poignant. But I could go on for pages and still not say enough about this film

VERDICT: An emotional and heart-wrenching film that has the power to move the most cynical of hearts. HIGHLY recommended to all.9.0 out of 10.0

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Movie Review

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Plot Summary

Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people.

A great film by Ridley Scott!!!

KOH is not Gladiator 2, first of all the movie is not about a slave dealing with Romans, at the heart of the movie is the battle for Jerusalem and two sides the Christians and the Muslims. KOH in my opinion raises up more issues than what Gladiator did and then some

The acting was great, Neeson as Godfrey of Ibelin , though he has a small role , leaves quite an impact. Bloom is wonderful, Eva Green is hot, Jeremy Irons is at his usual best , David Thewlis also puts up a great performance as Hospitaller, and Edward Norton turns in a memorable performance

The story is that in 1184 during the time of the Crusades , Balian a blacksmith becomes a knight to defend Jerusalem from Muslim invaders

Bloom as the protagonist who doesn’t believe in God or religion, ‘I am just a blacksmith’, undergoes a spiritual journey that tests both his values as a man (do I stay here and fight for people of Jerusalem) and his ideals about religion. He also has his morality come into question through almost the entire movie, does his give into temptation and join the dissenters of the church (Guy De Lusignan) or does he kill and lie to get what is offered a seat of the throne

The directing is brilliant, I believe this is shot on location if not, the sets, the special effects and budget really show. Ridley Scott as the veteran has a great eye for setting up locales, key battle scenes and incredible emotional characters

Balian’s character is also 100% vulnerable he takes his series of hard shots and hangs on to claim victory just when you think the numbers are against the guy he finds a way to outsmart his opponents

Back to story. Balian kills a priest who mocks his late wife who committed suicide. ’she is in hell because she committed suicide’ and so Balian out of rage and the contempt this guy has for him kills him. He is now a fugitive. When he learns Godfrey of Ibelin is his father, , Godfrey wants him to fight in the crusades and go to Jerusalem

Balian still in shock doesn’t want to go with his dad. When the authorities come to claim Balian and execute him, there is a big battle which results in some of Godfrey’s nights being killed. Balian seeing the sacrifice the knights have done for him, finally does go with his father

Balian gets christened as a knight, but doesn’t believe in God, is not an atheist per say, he believes in death but he doesn’t believe in the greater good

This is a key issue being brought up throughout the movie, what is religion? Is it just words or actions that we live by. Does God really offer us hope and salvation, and the answer is yes

When his dad dies and through the speeches with Hospitaller (David Thewlis) who talks about him about religion that Balian he starts to have a spiritual awakening of sorts. Exposed to the poor people of Jerusalem , Balian uses his new power as a lord and a knight to build up shelters and provide water for the people as he says which I am paraphrasing he is trying to be a good man and trying to aid the helpless

Hospitaller: ‘Religion is not made up by fanatics.. it’s about your rite of actions’ He makes the analogy that religion really is about who you are as a person and by what you do , not by what you preach as a so called Christian

Eva Green is Sybilla the future queen of Jerusalem whose brother King Baldiwn (Norton) is sick and near death. Sybilla likes Balian of Ibelin (Bloom) because she feels he is brave and good. She hates her husband Guy who is one of the knights for King of Jerusalem. She mentions she was forced to marry him in a prearranged deal so there’s an internal conflict with Guy and Balian. Guy and Balian previously meet early on when Godfrey introduces him to Lord Tiberius (Jeremy Irons) and Hospitaller. Sybilla also undergoes a transformation in the film as well, when the King dies, she sees in Balian leadership that is absent in her husband

Balian visits places in Jerusalem like the place of Christ’s crucifixion and gathers within himself spiritual strength and a sense of direction to the turbulence around him

The Muslim characters in the movie consists of Saladin (Ghassan Massoud)and , Muslim Grandee (Nasser Memazia who want Jerusalem for other uses such as for the nation of Islam. I should say the Muslim characters in this film get a large bulk of screen time. Furthermore, their characters are treated with respect and almost admiration. In fact Scott tells us their back story as well and we see display of Muslim religion in the movie such as Muslim praying in mosques and in the city of Jerusalem

This reminds me of the Palestian/Israeli conflict of sorts where you have both sides that believe in God but are battling for the control of one city, despite the fact that they both profess to believing in God. Some questions to ponder are these other people with religious ideals worse than we say they are, or are they merely some religious fanatics misusing the name of God for power? Couple that the moral questions that almost every character goes through and the questioning and denouncement and spiritual awakening of God and my you got yourself a thought provoking film

KOH is a great film. Not only is it full of action and great characters and wonderful acting but it also has a good story and challenges you as an audience to think about the messages in the movie long after you’ve left the theater!!!

“Flags of Our Fathers” Movie Review

“Flags of Our Fathers” Plot Summary

The life stories of the six men who raised the flag at The Battle of Iwo Jima, a turning point in WWII.

Best movie in years – worthy of Academy Awards

‘Flags of our Fathers’ is the powerful and moving true story of what happened to the three survivors of the six men that raised the flag on Iwo Jima as immortalized in the Marine Corps Memorial

The editing of this film, utilizing flashbacks and showing how something as simple as a lightning bolt flashing can bring back memories that haunt veterans of combat is very true to life. My wife is a nurse at a Veterans Home – thunder claps in the middle of the night will invariably bring out cries from the sleeping combat veterans

What is also true to life is how these men – Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John Bradley – did not see themselves to be heroes. They felt that the heroes were those who had fallen on Iwo Jima – yet the public was continually holding them up to be more than they thought they were. This is shown very well when James Bradley is going through the box of his fathers possessions and pulls out an envelope with the Navy Cross stuffed in it. The Navy Cross is one step down from the Medal of Honor and is awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat – normally one who earned it would put it on display

The use of sepia tone at times – plus the sheer starkness of the black sands with the stark white of flares – gave this film a look that was very compelling. As far as how emotional of a movie this was shown in the theatre where I saw it – which was a full theatre on Veterans Day. At the end of the movie, the credits started rolling – and no one stood up. A lot of noses were being blown and tears were being shed, but no comments were made at all – this movie affected the audience that much

I consider this to be equal to Citizen Kane as far as quality movies are concerned. This isn’t light entertainment.

“The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc” Movie Review

    “Joan of Arc” Plot Summary

A young girl receives a vision that drives her to rid France of its oppressors. add synopsis

    A fine film

By no means a perfect film but you have to give it a lot of credit for trying to do something different with the material. I love the visual mystery of it all and the at times abstract images. For some reason it feels like there may have been a lot left out during the editing process, but a lot of these types of films have that feeling. Milla Jovovich hit a career high in The Messenger that she has never really lived up to since. What is brave about this film is that fact that it takes such a famous historical figure and does not try to deify her or make her a larger than life hero. She questions herself at every corner. She is confused half the time. Joan of arc in this film never seems to be sure of herself and is not above changing her mind at the last second like in the scene of the retracted confession. Granted, narratively this film can be a bit muddled, but as texture and atmosphere, it is hard to beat. Luc Besson has a sly wit that seems out of place here, for example the scene where an English guard asks ‘What is she doing’ cut to the French fighters ‘I don’t know!’ The score for the Messenger is very unique, with a combination of abstract synthesized sounds and large scale orchestra and choir reminiscent of a biblical epic. I must be honest in saying that I did not entirely like this film when I first saw it in the theater, but it stuck with me, so I went back for a repeat viewing and found I liked it a lot better than I thought. This is a very unique, although not entirely successful take on a very old story.

    “Tombstone” Movie Review

    “Tombstone” Plot Summary

A successful lawman’s plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona, are disrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating.

Easily the best film I’ve seen in a month

A public service announcement to anyone that hasn’t seen this movie: Watch it now! I just saw it for the first time, and it’s easily the best movie I’ve seen in months

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but, in my opinion, characters are likely the most important aspect of a film. That said, the characters here couldn’t be better, each one has their own distinct personality, they all have moments to shine and, most importantly, they are all superbly acted. Top honours in that category go, of course, to Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. Simply one of the best characters ever to grace the screen, no more needs to be said. Kurt Russell also did a very good job as celebrated lawman Wyatt Earp. The supporting cast are great as well, but these two certainly stand out…especially Kilmer

I wont get in to how great the plot is so that I don’t spoil it. I’ll just leave it at this: it’s an enthralling story that will keep you glued from beginning to end, surprise you at times, and even saves time to make you laugh. Very well written, very well played out. Even the music is great, which is something that I often overlook

In conclusion, I’m a huge western fan. In fact, next to horror, I’d have to say they are my favourite genre of film. Despite being fairly recent, this film ranks among the best and has certainly earned it’s spot as one of my favourite films.9/10

    “Valkyrie” Movie Review

    “Valkyrie” Plot Summary

Based on actual events, a plot to assassinate Hitler is unfurled during the height of WWII.

Great Movie – Kids Loved It Too

There’s been a lot of comments about the movie itself, and I agree with all the good ones. Tom Cruise has grown up; he did a masterful job conveying von Stauffenberg. The supporting cast was superb, plot taut and captures the heart of the resistance without getting bogged down in details, etc. If any of you are thinking about taking kids, but are wondering about possible violence, or if the story line is too convoluted for them, I thought you might be interested in my experience. Small children are better left at home, but older children (9-up. You are the best judge of your child) will do fine, with a little help. This is a movie that is Better if you know what the story is, so explain the background (who these people are, difference between the SS and regular Army, Nazis and Germans, etc.) because the beginning of the movie can be confusing if you don’t know the story. You might want to do some research, too. And expect to do more explaining after you see it. My kids – 10 & 12 – were captivated all the way through, without any sign of boredom, or not understanding what was going on. The violence is no more than kids see on t.v. No blood or gore, except for a mild scene at the beginning which is just standard war movie stuff. My kids had no trouble with any of it. So, I say, take the kids if they like war movies or adventure stories. Give them some History before you go, and Enjoy.

“The Last King of Scotland” Movie Review

“The Last King of Scotland” Plot Summary

Based on the events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s

    Great Acting! and Gillian Anderson!

I like movies based on real people in history. Because of the Oscar buzz surrounding Forest Whitaker now, I knew this movie is about Idi Amin. This is of course a familiar name in my childhood (asked in General Information contests), but I don’t really know much about him, except that he was a dictator

This film has a documentary feel to it. It is really very realistic, even if upon reading background info that the Dr. Garrigan character is fictional. Even though granted that the Idi Amin regime was compressed into a coherent Hollywood storyline, it does not feel contrived. The final sequence of events at the Entebbe Airport was very suspenseful indeed

Idi Amin was not really the lead character in this movie. It is actually Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. Being a physician, I could not help but be able to identify with his situation and dilemmas. Would you accept to be the personal physician of a country’s president upon his personal request? It seems to be an offer and career opportunity you could not refuse

There is sex and violence in this movie. I could not agree though with Dr. Garrigan’s rashness regarding his love affairs, particularly his morals of hooking up with wives of his supposed friends. But considering that this movie is set in the 1970s, that was a totally different world pre-HIV. The violence, what can I say? After watching one violent film after the other, you get sort of anesthetized already. That said, the scene with hooks at the airport was still something else! The acting is very good. Forest Whitaker has channeled the Idi Amin persona very effectively. I could feel the scary and suffocating craziness whenever he is on screen. There’s something about this performance being based on a real character though. I think it would be harder to essay a totally fictional character since you have to create this new character from scratch. And I feel James McAvoy (who was actually Mr. Tumnus in ‘Narnia’!) did so very well as Dr. Garrigan. You dislike him, yet you can empathize the stickiness of his situation

Before I end this review, I have to mention that I was very happy to see the luminous Ms. Gillian Anderson again. I totally did not know she was in this film and it was a welcome surprise. She handled her few scenes as the wife of a volunteer doctor very well indeed. I hope she gets meatier movie roles in the future.

    “Hotel Rwanda” Movie Review

    “Hotel Rwanda” Plot Summary

The true-life story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.

    Such an important film

I’m a college freshman at a small school in New York taking a class on the individuals role and responsibility in community. We read the book ‘We’d like to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families’ about the Rwandan genocide and then went to see this movie. It is very accurate about what happened but reading it is just not the same as seeing it, it seemed horrendous always but when I actually saw the movie it was just… Jesus… it’s so hard to believe that this happened and that this could. The film was excellent in both execution and portrayal. Everyone must see this movie and know we are all human beings and it is our responsibility to be there for each other. Jesus Christ… this can not happen.
