    “Match Point” Plot Summary

At a turning point in his life, a former tennis pro falls for a femme-fatal type who happens to be dating his friend and soon-to-be brother-in-law. add synopsis

The Talented Mr. Allen: Woody’s best film since ‘Crimes & Misdemeanors’

MATCH POINT (2005) ***1/2 Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, Penelope Wilton, Margaret Tyzack, Ewen Bremner, James Nesbitt. The Talented Mr. Allen: Woody’s best film since ‘Crimes & Misdemeanors’Woody Allen has been a respected filmmaker for over thirty years and in recent memory has been in something of a slump with his trademark New York neurotic comedies of late and it has been well over a decade since he attempted anything resembling a drama (his last was a combination of comedy/ drama for his masterpiece ‘Crimes & Misdemeanors’ in 1989) and in his latest stab at it comes through remarkably with his best film in sometime

Jettisoning his usual choice of his beloved Manhattan The Woodman jaunts across The Big Pond and sets his story in London (not the first European adventure mind you – he did go to Paris for ‘Everyone Says I Love You’) with the plot focusing on a borderline callow young tennis player cum pro, Chris Wilton (Rhys-Meyers giving Jude Law a run for the money as sexiest Brit on screen) whose philosophy for life is being lucky rather than being good or great at something. This proves to be his one flaw as he obtains a job as an instructor for a supremely private resort club where he befriends one of his charges, Tom Hewett (Goode), whose shared love for opera has him inviting the unassuming Chris to a performance where his family has a box seat reserved. Here he meets the rest of Tom’s family: respected businessman Alec (the ubiquitous Cox), tipsy mum Eleanor (Wilton) and engaging sister Chloe (the wonderfully sublime Mortimer) who falls deeply head over heels in love with Chris almost immediately. Chris too finds himself in love with Chloe and before you know it is taken in by the wealthy clan as one of the family

As the story progresses Chris finds this sudden shift in his life moving along nicely and to his agreement accruing a position in one of Alec’s many business ventures as an apprentice seller and weekends at the sprawling estate of the Hewetts. It is there he also meets Tom’s gorgeous American fiancee, Nola Rice (Johansson giving one of her better performances to date), a fledgling actress who beguiles Chris immediately and he is smitten by her, intoxicated by her very presence that the two wind up in a countryside embrace leading to a moment of unbridled passion. While Nola makes light of giving in to their primal desires as a lack of clarity on her behalf, Chris cannot get enough of her; Nola explains this desire is temporary and that she is getting married to Tom; end of story

Chris tries to do what’s right and eventually marries the unsuspecting Chloe and absorbs himself in work until one day while playing a set with Tom he is informed that Tom has dumped Nola and is in love with another unknown woman. The fire is re-ignited in Chris’ soul and the determination heightened as he becomes infatuated in finding Nola again to seduce her once and for all. Allen allows his talented class plenty of room to act up a storm but not overact the seemingly straight-forward melodrama at hand but what makes it rise above the norm is the way his leads make their seemingly unsympathetic characters empathetic. Rhys-Meyers remains cool as a cucumber until the predictable complication ensures his affair with Johansson will lead to an unlikely scenario that borders ridiculous mystery theater affair however maintains a balance of dread in when the couple will come to a head. Johansson mixes the smoky cadence of her Kathleen Turner-like vocals into a come-hither-insouciance not before experienced and has the tricky task of making her Nola’s head case come to fruition with believability; she succeeds succinctly

Allen’s screenplay is literate, clever and crafty and at once familiar with a few of his trademark quips tossed in with elan that his upper crust characters make the most of what they can with a dry bright witticism here and there. The storyline flows evenly amidst its choppy third act that feels a tad rushed yet when the darkness comes it echoes ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ which it has a lot in common with but never trespasses entirely. This is Allen’s most adult film in sometime and not to besmirch it perhaps his most challenging one to date. Thank God Woody is back in fine form, not unlike an old tennis pro on the senior’s tour with a wicked backhand.

    “Wedding Crashers” Plot Summary

John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey, a pair of committed womanizers who sneak into weddings to take advantage of the romantic tinge in the air, find themselves at odds with one another when John meets and falls for Claire Cleary.

    surprisingly funny

I’m not a guy who usually goes for the gay and sexual humor. This is not because I am a prude, but because these kinds of movies tend to take it too far and just isn’t funny after that point. Wedding Crashers, however, executed this brand of humor perfectly. Another plus that makes this movie an above average comedy is the fact that the comedy did not take away from the plot. Many movies, such as Animal House, go so out of their way to be funny that they forget that movies are meant to tell a story. Wedding Crashers did a great job of keeping the comedy in the realm of a specific plot. Wedding Crashers is a unique and fun movie and I would definitely recommend watching it.

    “300″ Plot Summary

King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. |

    Awesome, breath-taking film.

I somehow missed the hype on this one, and the trailer really didn’t excite me, but I got a chance to see an advance screening and the other reviewer here who said ‘It blew me away’ hit the nail right on the head.

I generally hate going to the cinema – preferring to wait until the DVD or HD-DVD are available because I’m fed up of shoddy prints, poor sound systems, ignorant members of the public with their ringing phones, late arrivals, noisy popcorn etc. My home system is so much better. But not for this movie! It needs to be seen on the big screen (preferably an Imax – I’m hoping to catch it a second time on IMAX) with a good sound system. The images are consistently breath-taking, the sound is staggeringly good and note-perfect throughout, and Gerard Butler is barely recognisable as the guy from ‘Dear Frankie’ (a great, under-rated movie) and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

Highly recommended. I’ve given it a 9, and I don’t think I’ve given a movie that high a score for over a year (and I average about 6 movies a week). This makes ‘Gladiator’ look like a cheap kid’s cartoon.

    “Beverly Hills Cop” Movie Review

    “Beverly Hills Cop” Plot Summary

A freewheeling Detroit cop pursuing a murder investigation finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills. add synopsis

    My favorite Eddie Murphy film!

Every time I see Eddie Murphy the first thing that comes to mind is ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ and how wonderful of a movie this is. This film is possibly one of the best action-comedy films out there. The action is done extremely well, the comedy is right on, the characters are likable, the acting is fantastic, and the story is great

Eddie Murphy really shines in this role as Axel Foley, a very likable Detroit Cop, and does a fantastic job of laying out the groundwork for a great franchise, as does director Martin Brest. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton play Axel’s Beverly Hills counterparts. Both pulling off fantastic performances and playing very enjoyable characters. Ronny Cox also does a fine job with his role in the film. Bronson Pinchot and Paul Reiser also deserve some notice as well, despite having very little screen time, they both make the best of it. I’d also like to point a little known actor named Damon Wayans in the film, playing an extremely small part, but nonetheless a good one (he’s the man that gives Axel the bananas).

As I mentioned before the action and the comedy are right on and the scenes flows very nicely together, you never once get bored throughout the film. If you are one of the few people on this earth that hasn’t seen ‘Beverly Hills Cop’, I strongly suggest you watch this one. It’s a fantastic film and deserves to be seen. Hope you enjoy(ed) it. Thanks for reading,-LebowskiT1000

    Brilliant casting

Tara Reid as an intellectual, Christian Slater(usually great) as a dollar store Constantine and Stephen Dorff as…well it’s STEPHEN DORFF FOR Christ SAKE!!!! I personally just want to thank those brilliant casting directors for the hard work and effort. You guys are on. Heres an idea, just my humble lowly opinion as the movie going public but it follows directly with your previous choices,a movie about the most brilliant neuro-physicist in history invent one pill to cure all diseases ever known to man and get this, heres the clincher they have to be played by Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton. I knew you guys would love that. Seriously though you owe me $7.50.

    “Funny People” Plot Summary

When seasoned comedian George Simmons learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship cause him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act.

    Funny People… Smart Movie

Funny People: 8 out of 10: What is amazing about Funny people is considering its set-up and storyline it manages to deftly dodge a veritable minefield of bathos laid out before it. The story is about comedian, who is super rich after a string of really bad comedies (Adam Sandler playing himself), finds he has version of leukemia and well is going to die soon. Therefore, he reflects back on his life makes amends and chases the girl that got away with the help of new assistant, a thin Seth Rogen

Yes, it is what we hipsters would call Narm city. Yet this Judd Aptow directed flick is so self aware of the pitfalls that it not just avoids them for the most part but in a true stand up comic style calls them out. This is at its heart a very smart and aware film. What could have been Terms of Endearment with dick jokes turns into an occasionally funny and somewhat touching film. It is also a very real film about real people and I am going to repeat myself here but it is truly smart

The only real downside I see is that I really do not see myself watching this film again anytime soon. It is a great ride but it never reaches that next level. The movie consists of some very funny bits, but do not come aboard expecting belly laughs. In addition, while I found myself enjoying the laid back pace at 153 minutes there is no question this feels more like a directors cut than a tightly paced theatrical release.

    “Resident Evil 2″ Plot Summary

After an outbreak in a top-secret facility, Umbrella ponders on covering up their mistakes by releasing the deadly Nemesis to eliminate surviving STARS members in Raccoon City.

THE funniest movie i have ever seen

*Spoiler Alert* (coincidentally can you spoil crap?) Where on earth to start…oh my, I’m trying to sit here with my friend and figure out how to best describe the utter stupidity presented in this movie…truly a waste of the breath in my lungs…OK, lets start with one of the main characters, Alice whom my friend and I repeatedly referred to as ‘Boomer’ because of her ability to constantly amaze us. This name is merely an understatement, as we are presented with multiple encounters of seemingly ‘near death’ situations in which she quickly devises some witty plan, gains the strength of an ox, the agility of a rabid bunny, and the brain capacity of Stephen Hawking. One incident in particular is the scene in which ‘boomer’ valiantly smashes through an assembly of stained glass windows on her motorcycle and carefully times her departure from the vehicle in the form of a triple back-flip, projecting the motorcycle at high speeds towards the apparently ‘bullet-fast’ creature within the building’s confines, only for the motorcycle to attain a vertical position along the creatures’ abdomen, turning perfectly, exposing the ‘ever-so-small’ gas tank, allowing ‘boomer’ an effortless, but nonetheless accurate shot at the flammable contents of the tank, and thus ‘efficiently’ dispatching this foul creature from existence… With her flawless perfection of shot, and ample bosom, how could anyone despise this movie…for laughs. Certainly not for actual enjoyment

This movie was so bad, i purged in an empty popcorn container, forgot about it, picked up the container once again, and proceeded to name the individual ingredients i recognized as food, and formulated names for things that looked supernatural. That was a much more fulfilling use of my time than watching this crappy flick.

    “Bones” Movie Review

    “Bones” Plot Summary

A prosaic forensic anthropologist and a cocky FBI agent build a team to investigate death causes. And quite often, there isn’t more to examine than rotten flesh or mere bones.

    Smart and Funny

Rarely does a new TV show capture my attention. The television industry doesn’t usually support and nurture their best, smartest shows so I don’t get attached to TV shows anymore–too many past disappointments and mind-numbing dialogue

I checked out Bones because David Boreanaz (Special Agent Seely Booth) is in the cast. David is an excellent actor and a favorite of mine. I follow his career. He can be quite funny and doesn’t take himself too seriously. He is also quite handsome and makes acting look easy and natural. Special Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan are the main characters in Bones and their chemistry is intriguing. I look forward to the development of this relationship

The shows’ characters work out of a research lab at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington DC. It is meant to resemble the Smithsonian Institute. Fighting crime is not their first priority. The study of human bones is. They are helping the FBI with cases involving bones that are difficult to identify

Emily Deschanel is fantastic in the role of Dr. Temperence Brennan. Her delivery of her character’s lines makes the viewer believe that Emily really is Dr. Brennan–the genius forensic scientist. She is so matter-of-fact. There is no ‘I am so smart’ smugness or ‘She is too beautiful, smart and sexy to be a forensic scientist’ as in other forensic shows. Dr. Brennan’s social ineptitude and indifference is what makes her lovable and believable. So many of us feel similar in our social lives. Her honesty is endearing. Bringing closure to the loved ones of the deceased is very important to Dr. Brennan. Her parents disappeared when she was a teenager and she doesn’t know what became of them. This is an integral part of the storyline and defines her character

The Squint Squad, as the forensic team is referred as by the FBI agents, is perfectly cast. Named this because they squint into microscopes and such? Angela is the artist who does artistic reconstruction of the skeletons to get a visual of the person the Skelton used to be. She is warm, sexy, socially smart, flirtatious and the best friend of Dr. Brennan. She is the only non-scientist in the lab. Dr. Brennan and Angela compliment each other and Angela shows the viewer the sensitive side of their work. Angela gets teary-eyed and nauseous when the scientists are cold and calculating. Angela adds the flesh to the bones and warmth to the Squint Squad by reminding them to have fun and leave the lab every once in awhile. She also makes the forensics easy to understand for the viewers

Zack is the cute, lovable genius geek forensic science grad student. That’s a mouthful. He is trying to impress Dr. Brennan at every turn. He usually does. Jack is the bug man of the Squint Squad. He is the defiant, skeptical entomologist–a conspiracy theorist that dislikes the government and pushes back at every opportunity. He seems to resent the FBI’s intrusion into his world. He is often trying to pick up women who come into the lab and not doing a very good job at it. But he does make us laugh!Bones isn’t a one town, one cast show. In its first season, Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth traveled to Washington State, Louisiana, Los Angeles and other interesting locales to investigate bones. They regularly interact with the locals–doctors, law enforcement and colorful residents– in their investigations. Many of the bones they investigate have significant historic backgrounds. Dr. Brennan, with the help of the team, is able to figure out the identity of the 200 year old bones and what happened to them. The histories are fascinating, so are the ways in which the team reveals them. The viewer learns more about the personal lives of the team in each show–usually through their reaction to an aspect of a case

The show also delves into current events such as the Iraq War and Hurricane Katrina. In Louisiana, the camera showed the destruction from Hurricane Katrina. There were streets lined with piles of debris months after the hurricane. Dr. Brennan went to help identify bodies and the viewer learned about the mental state of New Orleans, or at least the shows’ view of it

The writing is smart, funny and fresh. I cannot find anything to criticize and I am usually quite critical. I need intelligence in my entertainment and Bones delivers. It is just plain fun too.

    “Watchmen” Movie Review

    “Watchmen” Plot Summary

In an alternate 1985 where former superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach into his own sprawling investigation, uncovering something that could completely change the course of history as we know it. |

    Just plain WOW!

Having read the graphic novel and having a film degree, I understood why many people thought that Watchmen could not be filmed. After seeing a sneak preview this weekend, I now believe anything is filmable in the right hands. While many purists will whine about the changes to the ending, it was an absolutely brilliant way to translate the desired effect from the novel to the big screen. Aside from that, the film does an absolutely incredible job of bringing the novel to life. The acting, fight scenes, directing, and special effects are as good as they come. I would go into more detail but I don’t want to spoil anything. Just go watch what may be the best movie of the 21st century so far.

WARNING: Do not bring your kids to this movie! High schoolers may be old enough but anyone younger needs to be left at home. This is definitely a R movie movie intended for adults.
