“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” Movie Review

    “Lemony Snicket” Plot Summary

Three wealthy children’s parents are killed in a fire. When they are sent to a distant relative, they find out that he is plotting to kill them and seize their fortune.

    The Marvellous Movie

It was wonderful. I’m sorry, skeptics, but it really was

The costumes were really unique. I liked how they seemed to draw inspiration from several different time periods

I really loved Liam Aiken and Emily Browning as Klaus and Violet Baudelaire- even though they didn’t fit my mental images of the characters, they proved themselves over and over again throughout the course of the film. Emily Browning has a history of doing excellent films, and after seeing her in the comparatively small role of Ned Kelly’s sister I had a lot of faith in her. I wasn’t quite as sure about Liam Aiken because I hadn’t seen any of his work, but I was pleasantly surprised

Sunny Baudelaire (as played by Kara and Shelby Hoffman) was just done perfectly. Everybody in the cinema laughed at the subtitles. I seriously didn’t think that it was possible for two-year-olds to be good at acting, but the Hoffman twins convinced me otherwise

The musical score was brilliantly done and the sets were, in a word, epic. I felt *dizzy* whenever there were panoramic shots of Lake Lachrymose, for heaven’s sakes! There were some scenes which were not in the books- such as the theme of sanctuary, the spyglasses, the lost letter from the Baudelaire parents. As a Lemony Snicket obsessive I expected to fume at these scenes, but they worked wonderfully

Keep an eye out for the hilarious ‘Littlest Elf’ sequence at the beginning and the amazing animated credits (complete with a song from the film ‘The Addams Family’, possibly a nod to Barry Sonnenfield, who is credited as a producer).

I am giving this film a 9 out of 10 simply because I am a fan of the books and there were a couple of story details I felt could have been communicated better

Excellent stuff! If there are any sequels, they can only improve.

    “Crocodile Dundee” Plot Summary

An American reporter goes to the Australian outback to meet an eccentric crocodile poacher and invites him to New York City. add synopsis

    A funny, simple, sentimental movie.

There’s not much complicated about this movie, and that’s a good thing. It’s a pretty simple fish-out-of-water plot, with Dundee (Paul Hogan, of course) doing an excellent job as a goodhearted, plainspoken, and cheerful Aussie in the Big City. Lots of great lines and funny moments, and the performances are all well done. Call me a sentimental fool, but the ending always makes me smile.

    “Brazil” Movie Review

    “Brazil” Plot Summary

A bureaucrat in a retro-future world tries to correct an administrative error and himself becomes an enemy of the state.

One of my favorite films of all time

This film is a treasure to me, so I’m really not sure how objectively I can talk about it. I also don’t know if there’s anything to be said that hasn’t already been said before. But whatever, I will just comment on some of the things that strike me particularly about the film.

First of all, it seems to me that at least cinematically dealing with a dystopia in a satirical or comedic way is far superior to doing so in a more straightforward manner. This film is far more interesting than ‘1984′ or any of the other films that have tried to capture a serious pessimistic view of future society.

I’ve always felt like the song ‘Brazil’ fit into the film very well — it suggests a kind of ridiculous Utopian or exotic romanticism, blown completely out of scale. There are several scenes in the film that visually portray this concept, such as the shot of the futuristic street which turns out to be only a tiny model which an old drunk with a Guinness is glaring at. Sam Lowry himself is a very dull person to begin with, as Jill Layton’s reaction to him indicates. He believes, at least in his conscious mind, that he doesn’t want any conflict or excitement in his life. ‘Not even dreams’ he says — but of course the truth we see is quite different, and it eventually unhinges his life and his mind. I think I’m not alone in sympathizing with this. Our lives can get so monotonous and so dreary, but we do convince ourselves that we’re happy. ‘It’s what you wanted, isn’t it?’ says Mr. Kurtzmann.

Some of my favorite bits — when Mr. Kurtzmann hits his hand on the table (‘what a pathetic creature I am!’), Harry Tuttle’s first appearance and his escape on the wire, the dinner scene where you have the explosion and then the waiters are setting up screens to block the diners’ view of the bloody mayhem.

Basically I think in this film what you have is a scary story about how dangerous it is in the modern world to be a dreamer. But rather than simply terrify us, Gilliam is giving us a chance to laugh at the existential absurdity of it all.

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” Movie Review

“The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” Plot Summary

A traveling theater company gives its audience much more than they were expecting.

    Terry Gilliam finally back

It is really a shame, that Heath Ledger has left this world. Seeing him in this movie and his performance in the Batman movie (The Dark Knight), you really wish you could see him in more movies. Which of course will not happen. We can even be glad that we have the chance to watch his performance on this movie

Heath Ledger had shot most of his scenes already, before he passed away. Terry Gilliam got convinced by the crew and the cast of this film, that he should continue in Memory of Heath L. And so he came up with a few new ideas, how this movie should be. And if you have no idea about Heath Ledger passing away and that whole story, you might even think the movie was planned like that from the get go

It’s a crazy world, that Terry shows us, which won’t answer many questions at the beginning and will leave with a few at the end. An end, that is really great and comes pretty close to the ‘Brazil’ brilliance. The whole movie seems like a comeback. Not that Terry G. was gone, but his Grimm Brothers movie did hurt his reputation

After this excruciating experience (it took quite a few years from start to finish), Terry is planning to finally film one of his dream projects. Don Quixote! Johnny Depp will not play the lead (he was cast back when Terry tried and couldn’t finish, watch ‘Lost in La Mancha’, a great documentary about the ‘Un-making’ of that movie) and it’s not out yet, who will play the lead role. Heath Ledger would have been great …

    “Twelve Monkeys” Movie Review

    “12 Monkeys” Plot Summary

In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

    One word: Amazing!

I didn’t see this movie for 13 years after it’s release. Everyone I met said it was great but I never got around to it. Finally I picked it up and I was blown away. The movie is slow at times yes, but it keeps you intrigued and interested.

The plot is that the world has been pretty much wiped out by a virus that is thought to been release by the army of the twelve monkeys. James Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent to gather info in order to help prevent it

The movie goes on from there and it has a few twist throughout.

The last 10-15 minutes is what blew me away. It’s shocking and answers some questions as to why Cole kept dreaming about the same thing over and over again.

This is a classic and I always recommend this to friends who are looking for a good sci-fi or any good movie in general. Great job by Terry Gilliam

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” Movie Review

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” Plot Summary

An oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer travel to Las Vegas for a series of psychadelic escapades.

One of the best movies ever made

I always love when I turn a person onto this movie. Too many people think this movie is just about drugs and the logic of a half crazy narcissist. It has a deep underlying tone that taps into the core of American culture. The evolution of a culture has to be violent, crass & revolutionary. This movie is that. This story takes place at the end of the civil rights movement where a blind and far too conservative America changes into something else. The narration where HS Thompson is talking about that ‘wave’ sums it up. What was going on in America when this story happened? The end of Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, Watergate, etc. Those who went along for the ride at that time wanted to change America. Maybe it didn’t turn out the way they really wanted but what do we have now that we didn’t have before? It’s not only socially acceptable to question authority, to not do so is Un-American. Thompson was the fulcrum in this. Before him journalism was too conservative. Thompson blew this away. He was everything that needed to push America into a new era. The best thing is that he makes no apologies for anything he did. He had to open that inner-eye. That is what this movie captures and it makes no apologies. Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp were ‘Gonzo’ enough to make this movie and they did this in the most excellent form. Johnny Depp portrayal of Thompson conveyed the message of this story perfectly. The best part about the story was the fact that it never set out to be one, it just happened. Thompson was the underlying kick in the ass that America needed to look inward and see itself for what it really was. A movie that can be a literal time capsule of the reality of a specific culture is a beautiful thing. It is even better when it isn’t America trying to speak for another culture. This movie is the reality of America as dissected by an American. It looks at itself for what it is, like a naked person in a mirror. This movie will always be a favorite for me. Whenever I can expose someone else to this it’s more precious than a bought education. Watch the movie without a joint and go beyond the chaos. Watch this movie for what it is. If you have never read the book, get off your butt and do now! Gonzo forever!

    “The Brothers Grimm” Movie Review

    “The Brothers Grimm” Plot Summary

Will and Jake Grimm are travelling con-artists who encounter a genuine fairy-tale curse which requires genuine courage instead of their usual bogus exorcisms.

Brothers Grimm awake your worst childhood nightmares.

I am surprised to find that this movie is so utterly underrated here. I have grown up on those tales, and I must say, Terry Gilliam really portrayed the worst of all the stories ever scripted by the Grimm Brothers. The plot itself is quite uncomplicated: the two Grimm Brothers travel around the land, pretending to fight evil spirits and witches they make up. The people are relieved and pay well. However, after their trick is found out, the only way they can regain their freedom is by encountering and fighting a true witch in a haunted forest that makes me shudder even as I think of it right now (no kidding). And believe it or not, Monica Bellucci is simply horrifying as the evil queen nurturing herself on the dead bodies of little girls of the village

The toad showing the directions is plainly hilarious

The gingerbread man is a blood-thirsty alternative for Shrek’s pal

I think that everyone complaining about Grimm Brothers should stop and think that this is a generally not very twisted version of what kids get to read or what is read to them at a very-very young age (at least here in Europe). I think Brothers Grimm is, apart from being a really intriguing and spectacular horror movie, a very well-made and intelligent satire on the Grimms’ ‘children bedtime’ stories. Brothers Grimm is one of its kind.
