“Coraline” Movie Review

“Coraline & The Secret Door” Plot Summary

An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

Wonderfully animated; basically a ‘modern’ fairy tale…

If you like fairy tales, you will love this movie. This film has everything: story, funny characters, entertaining dialog, good scenes, beautiful animation and a nice moral

I loved Coraline. It’s a very kind, but also mysterious movie about a young girl who, by pure curiosity, travels to a parallel dimension of her house. There she meets her ‘other mother’ and ‘other father’. Everything is fantastic and everyone seems so nice. However, after awhile it becomes clear that a dark power is trying to lure Coraline away from her real family…There’s so much to tell about this movie, but I think it’s best that you go watch it yourself, before I spoil too much. Coraline is truly a wonderfully animated gem. It’s a movie you will watch again and again over the years, maybe as an annual tradition! 9 out of 10 stars!

“The Devil Wears Prada” Movie Review

“The Devil Wears Prada” Plot Summary

A naive young woman comes to New York and scores a job as the assistant to one of the city’s biggest magazine editors, the ruthless and cynical Miranda Priestly.

Loved it!

I thought the movie was just too cute.. If you’ve read the book, you won’t be disappointed! It’s the story of a young girl who moves to NYC to become a journalist but finds herself working as an assistant for a top notch fashion magazine, which is way out of her style league. The girl is a go-getter so she does what she has to do to make it work and ends up becoming the right hand (wo)man to the editor and chief changing her life (for better or worse) forever. The movie is definitely a feel-good and has you leaving the theater with a smile and a bit more confidence in your walk. I absolutely recommend it and apologize for not giving more details, but it’s too good and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone! Also, for you guys… a lot of males were at the special showing and I heard a few say they surprisingly liked it (including one of my ‘macho’ guy friends) so if you’re looking for a nice date or a surprise for your loved one, it’s a good pick!

“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” Movie Review

    “Home Alone II” Plot Summary

Kevin McCallister is back. But this time he’s in New York City with enough cash and credit cards to turn the Big Apple into his very own playground…

    A very good sequel

‘Home Alone 2: Lost In New York’ is a sequel to the classic ‘Home Alone’. A very nice sequel, let’s face it! If the first one is hilarious, this one is hysterical! I consider this superior to the original. Both are great holiday films

The basic plot is similar to the first one’s, but it’s not a carbon copy. There are many things that make this a different film and a more rich and complete one. It’s a movie with more heart either, with touching scenes such as Kevin and a kid in the hospital waving at each other

The first one basically takes place in Kevin’s house and that zone. This time Kevin is not forgotten at home. Instead of Paris, this time his family is going to Florida and they nearly take Kevin… but he’s accidentally left at the airport. Kevin sees a guy who wears a suit equal to his father’s and confuses him with his father. He enters in the wrong plane and goes to New York City! Like in the original film, Kevin wishes to be lonely after another fight with Buzz. This time the fight is not about a pizza, but because Buzz humiliates Kevin in public when it’s his solo singing of the song ‘My Christmas Tree’, making many laugh. Of course that Uncle Frank, who has no respect for Kevin at all, laughs out loud with this

How come Buzz and Uncle Frank always seem to get away with everything I don’t know… but at least this time Kevin gives a deserved punishment to Buzz. Besides, Buzz isn’t even being sincere when he apologizes. In fact, he whispers Beat that, you little trout sniffer. When Kevin says to his Uncle Frank Oh, wouldn’t wanna spoil your fun, Mr. Cheapskate!, it’s a well deserved reply as well. Indeed, Uncle Frank is a cheapskate, besides being a jerk

The booby traps are more violent comparing to the first movie, but somehow they’re more hilarious, although sometimes they overdo it. The ‘wet bandits’ are no longer nicknamed like that. Now Marv nicknames them as the ’sticky bandits’ after stealing some money from a Santa Claus

The Plaza Hotel is beautiful, with stunning architecture and decoration, not to mention that it’s an extremely luxurious, refined hotel

Cedric is a likable chap, but the Concierge not so much because he dislikes Kevin from the very first moment, although this guy is hilarious at times. Lots of hilarious moments happen in the hotel, mostly with the Concierge and Cedric. One of my favorite parts is when Kevin fools the Corcierge with that cool song ‘Cool Jerk’ – that is hysterical! And what to say about when Kevin fools and scares the hell out of all those hotel’s professionals with a gangster’s movie named ‘Angels with Even Filthier Souls’? That is incredibly funny! The most hysterical part is when Kevin is about to throw a 4th brick and Marv is trying to warn Harry with a strange and almost cartoonish tone of voice, so much that it’s impossible to understand what is he saying

Harry swears the same phrase from the original film – ‘ratcha fatcha freckin’ fracha’ or something like that. But this time he swears that over and over. I wonder how many times he swears that. To this day, I still wonder what is he saying. Maybe it’s almost as if he’s saying the ‘F’ word?Duncan’s Toy Chest is the most beautiful and wonderful toys’s store I’ve ever seen in my whole life. It is absolutely amazing! It is huge and full of everything when it comes to Christmas decorations. It’s almost like a world of fantasy or something from another world. Christmas decorations are also very present in this movie, as well as lovely Christmas carols and good messages about Christmas, allowing us to feel the Christmas magic and spirit

As for the soundtrack, there are plenty of nice Christmas songs, such as ‘All Alone on Christmas’, ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’, ‘My Christmas Tree’, ‘Christmas Star’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ (too bad it’s not on Brenda Lee’s version). Not a Christmas song, but ‘Cool Jerk’ is awesome

Once again, Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern steal the show in their roles. Eddie Bracken is also great as the kind hearted Mr. Duncan. Macaulay Culkin is even more cute in this film and he has a beautiful smile. Plus, he could be a singer too, he had a beautiful voice to sing and sings beautifully in this film

That sequence with Kevin at the top of the World Trade Center is spectacular and nostalgic, but also painful and depressing to look now because it brings back memories of the tragic date 11th September 2001. Who could possibly imagine back in 1992 that, some years later, such horrible thing would happen? This movie always gave me the urge of spending a Christmas in New York City. It makes Christmas seem so beautiful in that city

This should definitely be on Top 250.

    “Meet the Fockers” Movie Review

    “Meet the Fockers” Plot Summary

All hell breaks loose when the Byrnes family meets the Focker family for the first time.

Very Hilarious Sequel Be Ready for a Non-Stop Laughing Mode

In this very hilarious sequel, Gaylord Myron Focker (Ben Stiller), his pregnant fiancee Pamela Byrnes (Teri Polo), his future father-in-law and retired CIA agent Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and his future mother-in-law Dina Byrnes (Blythe Danner) travel to Florida to visit Greg’s parents, Bernie Focker (Dustin Hoffman) and the sex-therapist Roz Focker (Barbra Streisand). The dispute between the ‘Focker-ized’ and very ‘Zen’ family and the rigid and paranoid Jack Byrnes made me burst in a ‘non-stop laughing’ mode not only along the movie, but also after, recalling the funny scenes and gags. The talent of Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro as comedians is very well-known by the audiences, but Dustin Hoffman surprised me how funny he is. Barbra Streisand is also excellent, and the jokes with the English word ‘Focker’ are great. For my surprise, there are IMDb users that hated this movie, probably bitter people without sense of humor that unfortunately we stumble in our lives. If the reader of my simple review wants to laugh, see this movie. My vote is eight

“The 40 Year Old Virgin” Movie Review

“The 40 Year Old Virgin” Plot Summary

Goaded by his buddies, a nerdy guy who’s never “done the deed” only finds the pressure mounting when he meets a single mother.

The funniest comedy since ‘THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY’ ; Steve Carell is a comic genius – the year’s funniest film!

THE 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005) **** Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Jane Lynch, Gerry Bednob, Shelley Malil, Kat Dennings. Hysterically funny high-concept comedy about the titular Andy Stitzer (wonderfully played by perennial second banana Carell in a truly extraordinarily comic breakthrough performance sure to stratosphere him to the A-list), a tech services rep for an electronics store in Southern California who is found out about his secretive identity by a trio of well-meaning yet entirely clueless womanizing co-worker buddies (Rudd, Malco & Rogen, each one degree funnier than the next) determined to get their friend deflowered no matter the cost. What follows is an unlikely yet very warm-hearted romance with a vivacious mother (the marvelous Keener having lots of fun here) leading to add more fuel to the fires within Andy. A surprisingly good-spirited and unapologetically raunchy romantic comedy; the funniest since ‘There’s Something About Mary’ with a shrewdly observant script by director Judd Apatow and Carell that features some astoundingly gut-busting sequences including a scathingly accurate David Caruso joke, homophobic debunking ribbing, send-ups of ‘date-a-paloozas’ and demystifying the war of the sexes with cheeky aplomb. A true winner and an instant classic; the funniest film of the year.

    “Hotel Rwanda” Plot Summary

The true-life story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.

    Such an important film

I’m a college freshman at a small school in New York taking a class on the individuals role and responsibility in community. We read the book ‘We’d like to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families’ about the Rwandan genocide and then went to see this movie. It is very accurate about what happened but reading it is just not the same as seeing it, it seemed horrendous always but when I actually saw the movie it was just… Jesus… it’s so hard to believe that this happened and that this could. The film was excellent in both execution and portrayal. Everyone must see this movie and know we are all human beings and it is our responsibility to be there for each other. Jesus Christ… this can not happen.

Kinda unusual role for Robert De Niro

This film was great but I needed some time to get use to idea that Robert De Niro is playing in comedy. I’ve seen many his movies and in most of them he’s playing gangster I’ve never seen him playing in comedy before but he was actually very suitable for this role. All other actors did a great job too, especially Ben Stiller. There were many funny and memorable moments. The idea of this film itself was very good for a comedy. I heard that this movie is a remake and I really would like to see an original bu it’s kinda hard to find. I haven’t see the sequel yet but I definitely gonna do it because Meet the Parents is one of the best comedies I’ve seen.

    “Broken Arrow” Movie Review

    “Broken Arrow” Plot Summary

Terrorists steal nuclear warheads from the US military but don’t count on a pilot and park ranger spoiling their plans. add synopsis

One of my favourite overblown 90’s action flicks!

Broken Arrow starts as pilots Captain Riley Hale (Christian Slater) & Major Vic Deakins (John Travolta) board a Stealth bomber equipped with two nuclear missiles, they fly the Stealth over the Utah desert in what was supposed to be a routine mission to monitor radiation levels but Deakins tries to kill Hale in an attempt to steal the nuclear weapons. Hale manages to eject from the Stealth before Deakins kills him, Deakins then drops the unarmed bombs & ejects himself leaving the plane to crash. Having witnessed the crash park ranger Terry Carmichael (Samantha Mathis) goes to investigate & finds Hale, meanwhile Deakins has managed to trick the army into thinking the nuclear weapons have been breached & therefore rescue teams cannot be sent in. With easy access to the bombs he intends to bribe the Government into paying a ransom or he’ll use them to wipe out half of the country, that is unless Hale & the park ranger can stop him & his men…Directed by John Woo Broken Arrow was his second American action film after the fabulous Hard Target (1993), I personally rate Broken Arrow, & Hard Target for that matter, as one of my favourite over-the-top action flicks from the 90’s & for that I apologise to no-one. The script by Graham Yost is as action packed as they come, there’s loads of shoot-outs, fights, explosions, crashes, vehicular mayhem & near misses. Most people seem to think the basic story is pretty far fetched & I have to agree but it’s by no means sillier than a lot of 90’s action flicks like Speed (1994) for instance. What I like about it is that it moves along like a rocket & there isn’t enough time between all the fights & explosions for small things like plot holes to make any huge difference. I also liked the character’s here, the relationships between Hale & the sexy park ranger & between Hale & Deakins in particular, I just thought the character’s & the way they were written & developed were better than the average action flick with themes like friendship & betrayed. I liked it, a lot

Director Woo knows how to turn in a decent action flick & he doesn’t disappoint here, while the unmistakable style of his earlier Hong Kong films may have been slightly sterilised by Hollywood the set-pieces in his films still remain very impressive. Broken Arrow probably has more helicopters being blown up & crashing than any other single film I think I’ve ever seen. Some of the explosions are huge, the fights are varied & well staged & most of the action is done the good old fashioned way on set in camera with real stunt men & real explosions rather than awful CGI computer effects which have become commonplace. The only scene which really made me cringe was when Hale falls off the back of the truck & he then picks himself up, runs after it, catches it up & jumps on the back! I don’t think so, the truck itself had at least a 10 second head start before we even discuss how slow it would have to have been going for Hale to physically run after it & catch it up. The violence isn’t too excessive, there’s not much blood in it & the violence isn’t sadistic or gloating as in say a lot of Steven Seagal films

With a supposed budget of about $65,000,000 Broken Arrow is well made with that Hollywood polish about it, the special effects are good & there’s plenty of big bangs & explosions for the money. The acting is alright, I liked Travolta (who was apparently paid $7,000,000 for this) as the villain in particular but he does come across as a bit theatrical at times, I thought Mathis was fine as the love interest although I thought Slater was a bit bland & forgettable as the hero

Broken Arrow is a great action film, it has a good cast, great action scenes, loads of explosions, better than usual character’s & it moves along at a good pace. I thought it was great & it’s as simple & straight forward as that.

    Wow !!

I’ve probably seen this film more times than I’ve had hot dinners, and it just gets better every time. Some of the scenes are so classic, that they come up in drunken conversations very regularly. The greatest tragedy is the death of Belushi. He was truly brilliant !
