“A League of Their Own” Movie Review

“A League of Their Own” Plot Summary

Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amidst their own growing rivalry.

I Loved It!

I saw this movie long time ago and I still watch this movie. ‘A League of Their Own’ is absolutely hilarious and also has some drama. I think this movie owes a big one to the actors who brought so much fun. Geena Davis plays Dottie Hinson, a loving sister who has some troubles with her younger sister, Kit, and struggles on making decisions of wether she should stay in baseball team (Rockford Peaches) or go back to her home with her husband who just came back from World War II with broken arm(or was it a leg?). It surprised me when I found out that Geena was inches taller than most of the women in the movie. She showed off many fascinating stunts, such as catching a flying baseball with one hand and sliding like a ballerina when catching the foul ball. She was great

Tom Hanks was hilarious as Jimmy Dugan, an alcoholic hitter who became a baseball coach of Rockford Peaches. Jim hates that job, but as the time goes by, he realizes that the girls are very good and he gets pretty enthusiastic about the game and all. I love the part when he gets frustrated and shouts, ‘There’s no crying in baseball!’ and gets on a fight with the judge. Jimmy Dugan is probably one of Tom’s best characters so far

Another great performance by Lori Petty, who played Geena Davis’ sister, Kit. Kit is a very good player, but she gets jealous of Dottie and eventually joins another team called Racines. Somehow, I loved her performance

Then there are other great actings by Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. They are somewhat nasty girls in the team who happen to be two close best friends. They bring so much joy to this movie and I loved the dancing scene at the bar. Madonna plays her part really well and Rosie is just great as always

Megan Cavannagh was funny also. She played Marla Hooch, who was obviously one of the best players in the team, but unfortunately her looks did matter when she was joining the team. Even though she might not be a best singer (scene at the bar was funny!), she met a great man and got married. Ann Cusack, who played Shirley Baker was pretty forgettable, but she played the sweetest role. Other roles like a player who is a mother of a naughty son (can’t remember her name, though) was also sweet, and the player who lost her husband made me cry. A pretty blonde player who used to be Miss Georgia was good also. Jon Lovitz plays a scout and gives the hilarious lines and I wish he had played more. And don’t miss Tea Leoni as the Racine player! She appears in some scenes, so keep your eyes open. And the older version of the characters looked so much like the younger versions. Especially the Old Dottie Hinson

So if you are depressed and want to watch a funny, witty movie and just have some fun – go and rent this movie. I would give 3 1/2 out of 5 (probably not a breath-taking film, but very entertaining).

“Cast Away” Movie Review

“Cast Away” Plot Summary

A FedEx executive must transform himself physically and emotionally to survive a crash landing on a deserted island.

Simply wonderful!!

This is a marvelous, heartwarming, engaging movie that features the genius of Tom Hanks. The film was neither too long or boring; it was just right. It might have been boring if it’d been anyone other than Hanks, but as usual, he melts into his role and delivers a riveting performance.

Kudos to Zemeckis also in capturing Hanks’ ordeal on the island, from his weight loss to his desolation. This is one of the best ‘Robinson Crusoe’ type adaptations I’ve seen.

And Hanks’ journey back to civilization was so interesting and moving. He superbly played the part of the person who’s struggling to find his place after being out of touch for five years! The scenes are so touching, especially his reunion with Hunt.

I was almost convinced this was based on an actual account, so much so I was looking to see the trailers at the end of the movie, saying ‘Based on the real life account of…’

Tom Hanks is one of the best character actors of his generation, right alongside of Robert Duvall, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Russell Crowe.

As an aside, this is the only movie I’ve seen that’s been a showcase of a corporate logo from beginning to end (and not a bad association, I might add), to which I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t produced by FedEx. ;-)

If you’re looking for something more than the shallow and contrived dramatics of the reality series Survivor, or a movie without the standard pyrotechnics or other adrenalin boosting gimmicks, then this film will be well worth your time.

It’s a human interest story, pure and simple.

I was so drawn in that when the movie ended, I really wanted to see what happens to Chuck in the new phase of his life, after meeting his next potential love interest at the very end of the film.

I guess that’s left up to the imagination. Happily ever after. :-)

Enjoy a superb tour de force performance by Hanks.

“Fun with Dick and Jane” Movie Review

“Fun with Dick and Jane” Plot Summary

An update of the 1977 comedy, Dick and Jane are living the good life. That is until Dick (Jim Carrey) loses his job shortly after getting a promotion that convinced his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) to quit her job. The money is gone, and the house ends up in foreclosure. Dick decides to turn to a hilarious life of crime to pay the bills with his lovely wife by his side. Then together they decide it’s time to steal back what Former CEO Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin) had stolen from them. add synopsis

    Fun enough…

Another little comedy to show off Jim Carrey’s talents… still it never became boring or felt like recycled stuff. In every comedy he’s in, he brings something new in his mannerisms and approach to the character. In addition, Tea Leoni pulls of a nice Jane… a rather plain one who’s continuously updating her character. Her performance is a real starrer in the film

There are a number of actually funny humor sequences in the film. Some of them are quite innovative. The first robbery scene in the departmental store is just totally hilarious. I have seen the 1977 version starring Jane Fonda, and somehow this remake suited for me better. That’s partly because of the script and the casting of course.

    “300″ Plot Summary

King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. |

    Awesome, breath-taking film.

I somehow missed the hype on this one, and the trailer really didn’t excite me, but I got a chance to see an advance screening and the other reviewer here who said ‘It blew me away’ hit the nail right on the head.

I generally hate going to the cinema – preferring to wait until the DVD or HD-DVD are available because I’m fed up of shoddy prints, poor sound systems, ignorant members of the public with their ringing phones, late arrivals, noisy popcorn etc. My home system is so much better. But not for this movie! It needs to be seen on the big screen (preferably an Imax – I’m hoping to catch it a second time on IMAX) with a good sound system. The images are consistently breath-taking, the sound is staggeringly good and note-perfect throughout, and Gerard Butler is barely recognisable as the guy from ‘Dear Frankie’ (a great, under-rated movie) and ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

Highly recommended. I’ve given it a 9, and I don’t think I’ve given a movie that high a score for over a year (and I average about 6 movies a week). This makes ‘Gladiator’ look like a cheap kid’s cartoon.

    “Spanglish” Plot Summary

A woman and her daughter emigrate from Mexico for a better life in America, where they start working for a family where the patriarch is a newly celebrated chef with an insecure wife.

    Great Movie!

This movie was very good. I thought Adam Sandler was fabulous and it showed his ability as an actor. The pain the family was going through was definitely brought out in the film. When a film like this is released, a lot of people expect the actors in it to not do well. I thought that Adam Sandler really connected with the children, especially with the daughter, in this film. He has a good grasp on what it is like to be a parent, how to love children unconditionally. The tension between John (Adam) and Flor (Paz) is believable. They care so deeply for each other, yet they both understand what is at stake. Yet Deb (Tea) insecurities are believable when she has an affair. I thought the direction of the movie was great as well.

    “Jurassic Park III” Movie Review

    “JP3″ Plot Summary

A decidedly odd couple with ulterior motives convince Dr. Alan Grant to go to Isla Sorna (the second InGen dinosaur lab.), resulting in an unexpected landing…and unexpected new inhabitants on the island.

This is no Jurassic Park, but a helluva lot better than The Lost World!

If you are like me, and have been following everything on Jurassic Park III for the past 5 months, you’ve probably set your expectations pretty high, and chances are, you’ll most likely be let down. In a way, I was. My expectations were pretty damn high for this film, but that was my own fault. No film could have possibly lived up to those kinds of expectations. But, the movie was everything it promised to be: A superbly crafted, action-packed, rocket of a movie. It was fast paced, and the action hardly lets up, maybe for just a few minutes for you to catch your breath, and then you’re hit right slam in the face with another dynamic action scene. The movie is only 95 minutes long, and about 75 of those minutes are nothing but thrills and scares. Yes, the movie is too short, but it’s hardly a problem. It leaves you wanting more and that is a sure sign of a great movie. Just don’t get your hopes up, thinking this is going to be as good as the first, because it isn’t. It is, however, a kick-ass special effects feast for all you hungry movie-goers out there with a taste for fine suspense thrillers…ok, I know that sounds chessey, but who cares. My grade: B+

    “Transporter 3″ Plot Summary

Frank Martin puts the driving gloves on to deliver Valentina, the kidnapped daughter of a Ukranian government official, from Marseilles to Odessa on the Black Sea. En route, he has to contend with thugs who want to intercept Valentina’s safe delivery and not let his personal feelings get in the way of his dangerous objective.

Best out of all three of them

Jason Statham returns in his signature role as fearless ex-mercenary Frank Martin (aka The Transporter), a specialist in moving precious cargo of all kinds with a cool style and attitude. I liked the previous Transporter films and this one is the best out of all of them not mainly because of the action but because this one had a better story-line than the first two. The story is about Frank Martin has been pressured into transporting Valentina (by using a device which prevents him from moving 75 feet from his car or the bomb explodes) the kidnapped daughter of Leonid Vasilev the head of the Environmental Protection Agency for Ukraine, from Marseilles through Stuttgart and Budapest until he ends up in Odessa on the Black Sea. Along the way, with the help of Inspector Tarconi, Frank has to contend with the people who strong armed him to take the job, agents sent by Vasilev to intercept him, and the general non-cooperation of his passenger. Despite Valentina’s cynical disposition and Frank’s resistance to get involved, Frank and Valentina fall for each other, while escaping from one life-threatening situation after another. Statham again drives an armoured Audi S8 in the film

Other than the story the movie was loaded with ultra cool action sequences and spectacular stunts that will keep you in the edge of your seat. I’m generally not really keen in action movies because they are all the same but Transporter 3 is different and I had a good time watching it. Overall it is a fun, popcorn action movie of the year.

“Bringing Out the Dead” Plot Summary

Frank Pierce is a paramedic working Gotham’s Hell’s Kitchen. He’s become burned out and haunted by visions of the people he’s tried to save. add synopsis

Good once it finds its rhythm

After reading the novel by Joe Connelly this movie is based on(by the way, the title is a reference to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL), it seemed a perfect fit for director Martin Scorsese, writer Paul Schraeder, and star Nicolas Cage. After all, this is the mean streets of New York, this is about trying to find salvation and redemption in the pits of despair, and it features a character on the edge. But when things start out, I was disappointed. It seems like all three of them, Scorsese, Schraeder, and Cage, were straining to get the effect of the novel, and it felt disjointed. The narration by Cage seems to be covering up for what’s not being shown, which always means trouble

In lesser hands, this might have been a problem. However, Scorsese has the craft to match his passion, and he soon finds the rhythm. The narration is used less and less as the movie goes on, and Cage is gradually able to show his grief, rather than just talk about it. We still don’t feel the impact of the story as much as we do in the novel, but we do feel something, thanks to Cage and Patricia Arquette(as the daughter of a patient he saves). Once it gets going, the black humor, courtesy of Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore as fellow paramedics and Scorsese and Queen Latifah as dispatchers, helps fuel the picture as well. This isn’t quite as good as Scorsese’s other New York stories, but it is a worthy addition to his canon.

“Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” Movie Review

“The Far Side of the World” Plot Summary

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.

Beautiful Portrayal of life in a navy vessel in 1805

I would like to start by saying Bravo! I liked the story, the execution of the story by the actors and the director. Russel Crowe really depicted the Captain well and I thought that the supporting cast were superb. The photography really enhanced the scope of the story, and I must take my hat off to the photographic skills of the photographic director

One tends to forget that this story is not a high speed chase film with lots of blood and gore however it does have its share, although, the speed of the story is greatly paralleled by the speed at which a sea chase would have happened 200 years ago

It is great to watch a movie that really gets to the heart of the emotions of the crew of a Man-Of-War vessel, not just making the crew look like the hardest SOB’s around

And to that I take my hat off to the Cast and Crew, as well as the writers and the director and producers of this production.

    “Deep Impact” Plot Summary

Unless a comet can be destroyed before colliding with Earth, only those allowed into shelters will survive. Which people will survive?

    Much more better than Armageddon

I really loved this movie, I have seen it over ten times, since the first time I saw it on the cinemas, to each time I see it on television I must admit I’m really crazy about this film, Well if you want my comparison between this two films, the only point in which I find Armageddon better than this one is in the action scenes, but i find better Deep Impact in casting, writing, drama, character development, locations, story, drama, destruction scene (isn’t the scene of the giant wave going over New York City really memorable and a great movie moment?). I will tell you my favourite scenes and character, which must be the president, he really makes you believe that if the world was about to come to an end the president would be exactly like that. Instead of the Armageddon’s ’so the world is about to end, who cares?’ attitude of the people. Well call this commentary just another ‘Armageddon vs. Deep Impact’ comparison, but I really wanted to share this thoughts with all of you
