“Bicentennial Man” Plot Summary

An android endeavors to become human as he gradually acquires emotions.

Very entertaining and heart warming movie.

Chris Columbus has another hit on his hands. Robin Williams gives his usual first rate performance, along with Sam Neil and Embeth Davidtz. They highlight a well cast movie that will pull at your heart strings more than once, in a tale written by Isaac Asimov that brings a lot of human emotion to this science fiction piece.

“The Men Who Stare at Goats” Movie Review

“The Men Who Stare at Goats” Plot Summary

A reporter in Iraq might just have the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady, a guy who claims to be a former member of the U.S. Army’s New Earth Army, a unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions. add synopsis

I loved this film. Clooney and Spacey were particularly hilarious

The story borrows liberally from the exploits of Joe McMoneagle and Ingo Swann and the cadre of Remote Viewers stationed at Fort Meade, MD, under the operational detachment Project Stargate. Yes, as the film states upfront: ‘More of this is true than you would believe’. There are instances in the film that incorporate actual Stargate operations: tracking submarines, finding a kidnapped American General in Italy and the search for Noriega following the US invasion of Panama. The comedy comes from the disconnect that the professional military hierarchy has from the rest of us. The Pentagon has too much money at its disposal and its internal political dynamics encourage a bizarre mixture of risk-averse yet forward-thinking innovators. This was particularly rampant after our loss in Vietnam. Vietnam and the Cold War combined to pull the Pentagon Brass in a thousand different directions and created a schism in the strategic planning sectors that is ripe for comedic exploration. Grant Heslov deftly captured this cultural watershed through his direction of the film. He ably guided the actors in performances that while sometimes brief, captured the totality of the real absurdity that the military can sometimes give us, while keeping the characters real and grounded and not drifting into farce. Heslov has captured an elusive tone, entirely his own, that I’ve only previously seen in Coen Brother’s films. This is a story I’ve longed to see told on the big screen and it was worth the wait. You could say its a story about the Military-Insanity Complex, but that’s too broad a brush for this slice of American military history. Clooney is brilliantly understated as always, he’s a master of subtlety and an actor that understands how powerful the camera can be. Kevin Spacey is throughly despicable as the film’s only real villain. If the film has any flaws at all its that Spacey is not in it enough. But the most poignant character is beautifully drawn by Jeff Bridges, who in just a few scenes depicts the inevitable trajectory of the innovative free-thinker in a rigid, uncaring system. Bridges shows us the cost of being that individual and Heslov gives the film room to explore this aspect of the story without sacrificing the reason we’re all there to watch: and that is to have a laugh at something that maybe should never have happened but did.

“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Movie Review

“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Plot Summary

Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey”, set in the deep south during the 1930’s. In it, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.

The Best Coen Brothers Film Yet

Just seen this film at an NFT preview, and I was blown away by it. It is very funny, gorgeous to look at, has a stunning soundtrack and absolutely impeccable comedy performances. Sharing a similar meandering storyline with the Big Lebowski, it succeed where that film fails by still having a coherent storyline running through and a satisfying resolution. As I’ve come to expect from the Coens, the visuals are striking but they’ve never been this beautiful before, and at no time – unlike – in previous films, do they seem merely to be there as an exercise in cleverness. But what makes this film is the excellent comic performances from even the smaller roles (several of whom are Coen regulars) – Even though the characters, as in many coen films, are (slightly irregular) stereotypes the performances give even the shallow characters a depth and makes the scenes even more funny. Oh, and the soundtrack ain’t too bad either.

    “Finding Nemo” Plot Summary

A father-son underwater adventure featuring Nemo, a boy clownfish, stolen from his coral reef home. His timid father must then travel to Sydney and search Sydney Harbour to find Nemo. add synopsis

    Another Pixar Great!

Finding Nemo is a very good animated film, probably it’s in the top 10 animated features of all time. The story is about a little clown fish named Nemo. He ventures out into the open sea while not listening to his father. He gets captured by a dentist and now his father, marlin has to save him from the clutches of the dentist and his ‘evil’ niece. The story of the film is unbelievable. I don’t know how a movie about a fish can be very popular. The voice acting is pretty good. The all-star cast did a great job voicing their characters. The music in this film is sweet. The music will lure you more into the movie. The song in the film is great for people who like music 40 years ago. Once again, Pixar did not fail in its ability to make classic animated films. Overall, this is a very good film. I rate this movie 10/10.

    “Speed” Plot Summary

A young cop must save the passengers of a bus that has a bomb set to explode if the bus goes below 50 MPH. add synopsis

    WOW. Thats It

Speed is a terrific thriller/action film that gives new meaning to the word ’suspense’. This and the fugitive are the only true thrilling movie of the past decade. Keanu Reeves, actually not that bad, plays a cop who is going after a mad-man (Dennis Hopper who is great as the 9-fingered terrorist) who has put a bomb on a bus which will explode if the bus goes under 50 mph. This wouldn’t be much of a problem, but in LA it is as much of a problem of pising off Hopper in this movie. The most action packed, thrilling movie I’ve seen in a while, maybe equal to the terminator. Favorite Line (after Hopper’s head get’s knocked off) Reeves- ‘Yeah, but I’m taller.’ Terrific entertainment. A+

    “Ice Age” Plot Summary

Set during the Ice Age, a sabertooth tiger, a sloth, and a wooly mammoth find a lost human infant, and they try to return him to his tribe. add synopsis

    Ice Age is coming…

I watched ‘Ice Age’in the movie theater and I liked the movie. Spite of the fact that ‘Ice Age’has many flaws and scientific errors, like humans, sabers, dinosaurs and mammoths living at the same period, and even the location of where the story passes(looks North America, but has some characteristics from Iceland for example) we can have fun even so.(unless you are very severe!) The planet is entering an ICE AGE, and many animals are immigrating to the south where is warmer. Sid is a stupid Sloth that is left behind by his own family, that can’t stand him any longer

Walking in his way, he meets Manfred,or how he calls ” Manny” a moody mammoth who does not care about extinction or immigration and is going to the north. Worried that he can easily be captured, Sid decides to follow Manfred, and in the middle of their journey, they found a human mother with her baby. The mother dies but Manfred and Sid decides to take him and return the baby for the humans. Diego, one of the sabers, decides to follow and help them to go to a shortcut to the human’s camp. What Manfred and Sid does not know, is that Diego is from a saber clan who hates humans and wants to kill the baby, and also pretend to betray they both to make they become saber’s food. What will happen, will depend of Diego’s behavior and conscience…aka ‘A Era do Gelo’ – Brazil

“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” Movie Review

    “LXG” Plot Summary

In an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, SF and adventure characters team up on a secret mission.

    Really Good Film

This is a really good film. I went to see it not knowing many of the details. I really enjoyed it. I believe that in order to appreciate this film, you need to have an open mind and not take it so literaly. I’ve read reviews of it in which the authors claim that not of the characters, or cars, or Nemos Sub, could work like they did. WELL DUH! It is a movie based on a comic book. It naturally wouldn’t be for real. I wonder what these people take us for. The other great thing about this movie is the characters. Some reviews stated that people wouldn’t understand this movie because the characters are not that new. That they’ve been around for a while and no one will remember them. The only two characters that I didn’t know were Allan Quatermain and Dorian Gray. But I would like to know more about them. So that in itself is good. It makes you want to know more about the characters. Bottom line… It is a really great film. Go see it with an open mind, and not take everything so literaly. You may find that you enjoy it. Don’t trust all the bad reviews. You should see for yourself. LXG is a really good film

A group of misfits enter a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their cherished local gym from the onslaught of a corporate health fitness chain.

    Great Fun!

Picked this up on DVD for ?3 ($6) – didn’t know anything about it We thought it one of the funniest films we’ve seen for some time. Thought I’d check out the rating and was surprised how low (6.6) it was. Then checked out some of the ‘Hated It’ comments to see why this could be I guess that a lot of people find this film offensive, with stereotypical attitudes – like how a bisexual woman could kiss both a man and a woman (an extraordinary observation). Or that it was unfair to poke fun at someone who spent all his waking hours dressed up as pirate. I think that comment came from a member of the Long John Silver Alliance

Lighten up! Comedy – like any other artistic endeavour is subjective – all I can say is that I laughed and found that at many points the jokes were coming faster than I could process them – always a good sign

A good combination of slapstick humour and smart-ass comments delivered at a rapid pace And an ever-popular theme: will the underdogs triumph? Watch it and find out

    “Memento” Movie Review

    “Memento” Plot Summary

A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.

Original and intriguing film noir revision.

Revising such film noir conventions as a story told through the unreliable point of view and voice-over narration of a morally flawed investigator-protagonist, the pervasive infusion of a dark past into the narrative present, and the use of a femme fatale as an embodiment of evil allure, Memento is perhaps the most original and intriguing revision of the genre since Welles’ Touch of Evil

As almost every commentator has noted, the most startling (or ‘gimmicky’) feature of Memento – and one with obvious roots in the film noir tradition – is its inverted/contorted plot structure. The film loops backwards episodically to present a series of revelations about the main character, Lenny (Guy Pearce), about the motives of his antagonists ‘Teddy’ (Joe Pantolino) and ‘Natalie’ (Carrie Ann Moss), and about the nature of Lenny’s memory-loss condition. His condition ‘isn’t amnesia’ (or so Lenny tells everyone he meets) but rather such severe short term memory loss that he is unable to assimilate and retain experience – in other words, to make new memories. Consequently, Lenny’s identity, or more precisely his self-knowledge, is arrested at the moment he received a blow to his head while trying to stop intruders from raping his wife

Everything that has happened thereafter has no subjective reality for Lenny, only whatever ‘objective’ reality he can forge using instant photos, notes to himself, and – for the really important stuff – tattoos. But matters are even more complex and paradoxical than this setup might lead one to expect. Gradually, the viewer learns that even the clear memories that Lenny claims to have from before the assault are, like dreams, colored by protective distortions and selectivity. Moreover the so-called facts he has assembled in his investigation and that he defensively claims are more reliable than memory turn out to be irretrievably entangled in subjective motives: his own, Teddy’s, and Natalie’s. Thus the viewer’s initial sympathy for Lenny as a justifiable victim/avenger transforms to horror as Lenny’s true current identity becomes clear

Importantly, Memento’s regressive plot structure is punctuated and counter-pointed by a series of noirish black and white flashbacks in which Lenny relates to an anonymous phone caller the story of Sammy Jankis, another sufferer of short term memory loss who, ironically, was Lenny’s big case in his pre-trauma life as an insurance investigator. Unlike the main narrative, the Sammy sequences are told in chronological order, strategically intersecting and organizing the narrative as it wends its way backwards to the moment when Lenny decides to set in motion the data trail that will lead to the murder we see him commit in the film’s opening sequence. In addition, Lenny’s reconstruction of the Sammy sequences is itself dreamlike and unreliable since he attributes to Sammy characteristics that (if we can believe Teddy, an utterly corrupt cop) are Lenny’s own

In addition to providing plot exposition and a recurring visual/narrative reference point, the Sammy sequences also bring into clear thematic focus the existential implications of memory loss. Like Sammy’s, Lenny’s ‘condition’ is a reduction to the most minimal and absurd level of the human mental processes for constructing meaning (in life, in film) out of fragmentary phenomena and evanescent recollections. In an age of Alzheimer’s, deconstruction, and ego-fictions, most viewers will all-too-easily identify with Lenny’s painfully hopeless and terrifyingly arbitrary quest to hold reality steady as is it fizzles and flits away.

    “Ladykillers” Movie Review

    “Ladykillers” Plot Summary

An eccentric, if not charming Southern professor and his crew pose as a band in order to rob a casino, all under the nose of his unsuspecting landlord: a sharp old woman.

An Amusing Tidbit from the Coen Bros.

Not up there with ‘O Brother’ or ‘Fargo,’ but definitely better than ‘Intolerable Cruelty.’ Best thing about it is the dialogue — there are a lot of really funny lines (though some of it is hard to understand). The plot — a remake — is a basic black comedy crime caper story where a gang of oddballs gets together to steal a bunch of money from a casino and everything eventually goes wrong. Tom Hanks is solid — his character is quite a creation — and the old lady is funny too. Of course — this being a Coen Bros. creation — there are lots of minor characters who are really amusing. Marlon Wayans’ character is annoying, though — he’s just sort of a typical p***ed-off, smart-ass, black guy. The cinematography is lovely, of course. And by the way, there is an AMAZING gospel choir and great gospel music throughout.
