“Mad Max” Movie Review

“Mad Max” Plot Summary

In a dystopic future Australia, a vicious biker gang murder a cop’s family and make his fight with them personal.

Low budget classic that is now a genre landmark.

Set somewhere in the future we are privy to a world where the roads are ruled by maniac gangs with souped up cars, and bikers that literally could come from hell. Trying to stop these marauding loons are the overstretched police force who themselves ride in exceptionally fast cars. At the front of this story is Max Rockatansky, a good honest cop trying to hold his own against the chaotic world that is forming around him. After his best friend is burned and left for dead he decides enough is enough and thinks about retiring from the service, but whilst on a vacation with his wife and child things go decidedly bad and Max becomes an avenging force of fury with devastating affect

When evaluating this film I feel it really needs to be put into perspective just how brilliant a job director George Miller did with next to no cash to work with, in fact Miller edited the film in his own bedroom just to emphasise the low-fi nature of the beast. The costumes are excellent, the cast are terrific, with Mel Gibson as Max particularly impressive, and here we have villains to truly fit the word villainous, but it’s the stunts and chase sequences that makes this film a rich rewarding experience. The opening ten minutes alone are pure adrenalin pumping genius, but the film as a whole delivers a crash bang wallop punch that has often been imitated since its release, but rarely bettered, and although the heart of the film is a simple revenge story, it grabs your attention and delivers right to the corking finale, 8/10.

Footnote: Region 2 Users should note that the bargain bucket Mad Max Trilogy flip pack set still contains the foolishly dubbed version of this film, incredibly stupid move from the American distributors.

“Public Enemies” Movie Review

“Public Enemies” Plot Summary

The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.

One of the best movies of 2009

I am a big Michael Mann film, Heat & Collatoral are amazing films and I feel that Mann delivered the goods big time in Public Enemies

Public Enemies is the story of the Depression Era bank robber John Dillinger (played by the charming Johnny Depp) who leads the FBI on a cat mouse chase. J. Edgar Hoover (played by Billy Crudup), the director of the FBI, orders Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) to hunt down John Dillinger and his gang. With the FBI hot on his tail, Dillinger still manages to pick up a girl he likes in Billie Frechette (played by Marion Cottliard).

This movie is very entertaining and mesmerizing, it may have started out slow for the first third, but during the last 2/3′rds of the film this movie picked up. Mann is a expert craftsman, he gets you to fall in love with John Dillinger, yet he gets you to feel sympathetic for Melvin Purvis, who was given a practically impossible task

This movie is highlighted by the stunning cinematography that Mann is known for, as well as the action scenes such as the Little Bohmia shootout and the Dillinger jail break and others

I honestly could see Billy Crudup getting an Oscar nod for this movie, because his Hoover was a scene stealer, and maybe Johnny Depp. Bale as always plays a great straight man like in much of movies to counteract the eccentric leading man (i.e. 3:10 to Yuma, The Dark Knight). Cotiliard is also solid as Billie, and the times when she hits her mark, she REALLY hits it and gets the audience behind her

This is by far the best and most intelligent movie to come out in the summer of 2009. I recommend that most people buy the Blu-Ray/DVD because they will not be disappointed. No one in Hollywood does high octane crime dramas as well as Michael Mann.

“Green Mile” Movie Review

“Green Mile” Plot Summary

The story about the lives of guards on death row leading up to the execution of black man accused of child murder & rape, who has the power of faith healing.

Excellent! Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this great movie

What an excellent movie this picture was. When I first saw the trailers in October, I thought it might be pretty good.

The Green Mile exceeded my expectations. Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this movie which stands out by far from most others. If you liked Shawshank Redemption, you’ll love this one. I’ve realized just how good Stephen King can write, now that I’ve seen this and Shawshank. It’s three hours long, and worth every minute of it. It touched me in many ways. I was fortunate enough to see it twice. And I will buy it on dvd as soon as it is available. The Green Mile will certainly become a classic. Go see it, you won’t be disappointed.

    “Final Destination 3″ Plot Summary

In this third installment of the Final Destination series, a student’s premonition of a deadly rollercoaster ride saves her life and a lucky few, but not from death itself which seeks out those who escaped their fate.

    Best of the three

This film is definitely the best of the three, hands down!! The ending is excellent. It proves that death is inevitable, no matter what! The other two did that, but in the sequel. This film did it at the end, with everyone dying! This one can’t be outdone, so no more final destination’s are necessary! And the pictures, with the predicting death thing, was awesome!! I think that was a good addition! And it was gory, not that the other two weren’t; but this one, you could feel it! It was like you were right there watching it all happen! And just when you think you have it figured out, like with the weight bench or the horse, something happens that surprises you! The other two were extremely predictable and hard to sit through. This one, you were on the edge of your seat the whole time; waiting for something unexpected to happen!!

    “School for Scoundrels” Movie Review

    “School for Scoundrels” Plot Summary

A young guy short on luck, enrolls in a class to build confidence to help win over the girl of his dreams, which becomes complicated when his teacher has the same agenda. add synopsis

    Fun to watch

There was a decent but not outstanding British comedy (1960) by the same name as this film, starring that great comic actor Alastair Sim, who also was wonderful as Scrooge in 1951’s Christmas Carol. It was based loosely (the books resemble self-improvement manuals) on Stephen Potter’s well-worth reading ‘One Upmanship’ and ‘Lifemanship’ books. Those hilarious best-selling books provide the reader with a guide as to how to use guile to get even with someone you identify as worthy of getting even with, or as Potter put it, ‘creative intimidation.’ To some extent the 2006 ‘School for Scoundrels’ could also be said to be based on those Potter books. While the original books and the 1960 film envisioned a small private college that taught the art of being one-up (if you are not one up, you’re one down), the 2006 version is a single self-improvement course taught secretly by a masterful rogue (Billy Bob Thornton) who calls himself Dr. P, to a group of low self-esteem ‘losers.’ His course resembles extreme confidence building sink or swim exercises more than one-upmanship. But he also goes one-on-one to put down the best of his students. It is explained that Dr. P is very competitive and shoots down anyone who might approach his level of skill. When facially challenged Roger (Jon Heder) unexpectedly is standing out as the best of his class, a one-upmanship contest between the master and the student gets underway

This is a fun film to watch; not at all sophomoric and not leaning on the slapstick approach. In addition to the two leads, the rest of the cast includes, among others, well known comic Sarah Silverman and comic actor Ben Stiller. Stiller is about as good as he gets (he is usually in films that are not my taste in comedy, although I recently saw him in something I really enjoyed.) On the other hand, the lines given to Sarah Silverman just make her character brassy rather than funny and are not up to the caliber of her stand-up comedy that she writes for herself.
