“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” Movie Review
“The Assassination of Jesse James” Plot Summary
Robert Ford, who’s idolized Jesse James since childhood, tries hard to join the reforming gang of the Missouri outlaw, but gradually becomes resentful of the bandit leader.
An epic masterpiece. Thoughtful, philosophical and profoundly existential
With a title almost as long as the 160-movie it names, regular movie-goers might be forgiven for thinking that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford is worth a miss. Too, even, that a title basically giving away the central hub of the film’s plot makes it hard for studio execs to sell the film as a sassy, gun-toting western with shlocky shoot-em-ups and angel eyes Brad Pitt darling it up in the lead role. This was all many were expecting after several re-edits, one being a but-numbing 3? hour cut, were made to a film that actually wrapped up filming in 2005. But what Chopper director Andrew Dominik has delivered, in only his second film, is an beautiful, epic, meditative poem of a western, that once again transforms the genre, once such a stable for conservative normality, by dissecting the myths that created it
Brad Pitt is uber-outlaw Jesse James, co-founder of the James-Younger gang, primarily specialising in train robberies. Casey Affleck is Robert Ford, a clumsy, awkward upstart, who is entranced by Jesse James to the point of obsession. He views him like a celebrity, studying his life, his robberies, his voice and even his mannerisms. He is so entranced that at one point whilst attempting to engage his idol in a conversation during one of James’ tin bath sessions, James very coldly utters to Ford ‘Do you want to be like me? Or do you wanna be me?’.Ford is constantly teased by his fellow thieves and gunmen, taunted for his love and idolisation of the gang ringleader. As the title suggests (or rather gives away), it leads to a tragic conclusion, a conclusion revealed so that the whole film may operate on a level far more complex than mere formulaic convention. Since we know the fate of the hero, it is not about where the journey ends, or indeed how it ends. But rather what the journey is, and how the characters deal with it. James seems to flirt with the idea of death, having been rendered a stalinesque paranoia-case after losing faith in all of his gang members. Towards the end of the film, he relies only on the help of the Ford brothers Charlie and Robert, not being able to trust any one else. He would be proved right, when Robert is the one to pull the trigger
The Assassination of Jesse James is a majestic western. It is beautifully shot in a way that doesn’t just please the eye, but utterly renders both the icy mood and bitterly cold temperature of the film it colours. The acting is first rate, with Brad Pitt playing the cold psychopath that is Jesse James with a subtle viciousness beneath his icy blue eyes. But Casey Affleck is the man who walks away with the film. Every scene he is in, he steals. His Robert Ford is brilliantly balanced between the enthusiastically enthralled and gawkish pathos. His obsession with James is understandable, given the legend of the outlaw that has spun a million myths in its wake, but it is reminiscent, at least to a modern audience, of a Mark Chapman the man who shot John Lennon. In fact one of the many themes running throughout Andrew Dominik’s film is that of the obsession with a myth. He is known as the ‘coward’ but is it to be a coward? Ford idolises James like many people do modern celebrities. When James reveals his spiteful and altogether psychotic edge to Ford, the myth is dispelled, and everything Ford had invested in him becomes crushed. All Ford could do to redeem himself, he felt, would be to kill James, and end the charade. But alas, all that did was strengthen the legend further
Perhaps in another world, it would be pleasant to know that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford gets all the credit it deserves, but it appears to have split many people up the middle. Some people think it is pretentious, and write sniffy articles about the film’s languidness. Others think it is too long and obscure. I am at the point now when it really doesn’t matter when dealing with a film of this magnitude, because it was a profoundly affecting experience, one reminiscent of the beautiful epics Terrence Malick used to make. If you find a better film this year, I would very surprised.

Great movie! Travolta is back!
When I first saw the previews for this movie, I thought, ‘Yeah, that looks cool, but… I really didn’t like Gone in 60 Seconds.’ I didn’t have the chance to see it in the theater, but I did buy the dvd. All I can say is, it was a good thing that I did! Unlike Gone in 60 Seconds, this movie is much more plot oriented. You need to pay attention to this movie to fully understand the plot. I really don’t see how people can say that this plot is confusing. It makes sense as long as you watch and pay attention, just like all movies. Also, the action scenes are just incredible to watch, especially with the dvd that uses 5.1 sound. The ending and the villains motives will shock you! The movie will also cause you to contemplate many things once the movie has ended. By the way, Halle Berry looks amazing in the movie! All in all this movie is just the epitome of cool, and it was definately one of the better action movies of 2001. Finally Travolta is back at what he does best. As a side note, this is a hell of a lot better then BATTLEFIELD EARTH,which by the way was not as bad as everyone said it was. I really think that you should see this, I don’t think that you will be dissapointed.9/10 Great.

“The Pelican Brief” Plot Summary
A law student uncovers a conspiracy, putting herself and others in danger. add synopsis
Most enjoyable thriller
Another complex legal thriller from author John Grisham (‘The Firm’) is brought professionally to the screen by director Alan J. Pakula (‘Presumed Innocent’).As in the Sydney Pollack film ‘The Firm’, ‘The Pelican Brief’ requires concentration and attention to detail as it relates the story of New Orleans law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts), whose theoretic paper, which outlines what she believes to be the reasons behind the brutal assassinations of two Supreme Court judges, lands her in hot water when it passes into the wrong hands. Her brief, it would seem, is much too close to the truth for comfort. So begins a frenetic chase as Darby runs for her life whilst she searches for someone in whom to place her trust. She finds that confidant in Washington Herald reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington), whose determined yet ethical pursuit of the truth is both admirable and effective
Grisham’s involved novel (which probably loses much specific detail in crossing to the big screen) gives the movie a plot that is fascinating enough to carry proceedings alone, however Pakula’s effective direction and his choice of two popular stars does no harm to the cause. Both Roberts and Washington are in good form and give strong performances, as do the impressive supporting cast
A most enjoyable, and occasionally tense, thriller whose beginning and finale are both far outdone by the fast middle

“Body of Lies” Plot Summary
Roger Ferris uncovers a lead on a major terrorist leader suspected to be operating out of Jordan.
The most entertaining CIA thriller of 2008.
Next to The Good Shepard(2006), Body of Lies is also a realistic look at the spy life. And you see it’s not the life that James Bond depicts it to be. I look the way it combines a thriller and the realism of the war. It was wonderfully well put together
A C.I.A. operative Roger Ferris(Leonardo Di Caprio) is on assignment in Jourdan in hopes to flush out a terrorist, Roger gets his orders from Ed Hoffman(Russell Crow) his cocky boss. But after things don’t go according to plan, Roger and Ed think up a new plan to flush out the terrorist. By making him think that somebody new is trying to muscle in on his territory. The stakes begin to get too high for Roger, and will this come crashing down on him?It was masterfully well directed by Sir Ridley Scott, he did every moment and angle perfectly. The way Sir Ridley Scott could do it so perfectly. Not to mention it was also brilliantly acted by Russell Crow and Leonardo Di Caprio. There are moments that will leave you bewildered and captivated.

“Black Hawk Down” Plot Summary
123 elite U.S. soldiers drop into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord and find themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily-armed Somalis. |
The best and most realistic war movie ever made.
As you may know already, this movie is based on facts. A faction of Somali militia that was hostile to foreign presence in Mogadishu murdered 24 UN peace-keepers. The starvation would kill 200,000 people.
The UN could only call for help to the USA, and at that time, Bill Clinton sent US Special Forces like Rangers, Delta Force and Navy SEALs to capture the leaders of the hostile militia.
When the US General Garrison had reliable information about Mohamed Farrah Aidid local allies’ location, American soldiers went for them.
In the most brilliant direction work, Ridley Scott portrays a band of brothers overwhelmingly outnumbered, who end up fighting for life in the worst moments of the raid.
When you watch this movie, you cannot avoid feeling a deep connection to those young men, who keep heading forward to complete the job. Every detail in this movie is awesome. There’s a time when you realize what heroism means- I’m talking about Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon. These two brave men payed the ultimate sacrifice just trying to rescue a pilot who’s chopper crashed in a hostile area. They made it- Mike Durant, the pilot, is alive today. This is what I call American heroism.
After watching this movie I was speechless, stunned. Now, I respect more than ever American servicemen. Thankyou for all the good causes you have been fighting everywhere.

“Brothers” Movie Review
“Brothers” Plot Summary
A young man comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan. add synopsis
Very moving drama on family bonds and war, very well acted and deeply felt
American cinematography seems to be in strong need of movies exorcising the horror of war (I think of ‘In the valley of Elah’), through the depiction of family stories, showing how war may affect deeply and often destroy the lives of soldiers and their families
There’s still much American pride in that flag waving from the first scene, and much sense of honour in laying down one’s life for the sake of the country. However, the damage brought about by war on the emotional and psychological life of this family, puts everything into question, and in the end, controversial thoughts and feelings are aroused, mainly when we perceive that the edge between good and evil is so narrow and difficult to establish. The cast is outstanding, and their contained, never excessive interpretations prevents the movie from verging on the too melodramatic. Natalie Portman handles her difficult character very carefully and convincingly, Toby Macguire, does a great work, mainly considering his background of lighter roles, Jake Gyllenhaal is good, but less convincing, being his development too quick. Also the always impeccable Tom Shepard could have given more if his character would have been given more space. The little girl playing Isabelle is surprisingly noteworthy. It is a very tear-jerking movie, although every emotion is filtered in a delicate way. In the end I get comforted by the idea that family bonds, no matter how fragile and difficult, are the only certain, real thing from which to start in order to try to find a sense, where a sense seems to be lost forever. A really worth seeing-movie.

“The Informant!” Movie Review
“The Informant!” Plot Summary
The U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre.
Wow! What a ride; lot’s of memories The Informant!
The beauty of the film is Matt Damon without question. Starring in so many action/dramas of late, it’s great to see him going the comedy route. The guy was in Kevin Smith films and hammed it up in the Ocean’s movies as well, but here he has center stage to show the kind of chops he has in the genre. With hair resembling a bad toupee and a pedophilic moustache, his Whitacre is mid-90s businessman elite, only with a conscience sort of. A lover of crime films and courtroom dramas, he begins to live his life as though he is in one himself. When describing what is going on to the FBI at one point, he breaks out with the line, ‘It’s like Rising Sun, the Crichton novel,’ or during a voice-over he begins to compare everything to The Firm. He sees that his company, a corn producer and therefore having its hands in pretty much every consumer product on the market, is criminally involved with competitors to fix prices and steal from their respective publics. Wanting to be the hero and save the dayhopefully with an endgame of being the only person left and in effect handed the companyhe decides to fabricate a story to get the FBI in his sights and then pounces, taking part in a two year sting operation to bring Archer Daniels Midland down
Soderbergh was live and in person at the TIFF screening I attended and, after being introduced as having been there twenty years previous with his debut feature, said, ‘(There’s) no sex, no videotapes, but enough lies to last another twenty years.’ And boy was he right. As the movie progresses, you not only become aware of the lies being told in the company, but also the information Whitacre himself is withholding from the FBI, then from his lawyers, and inevitably from everyone. By the end, you can’t help but wonder what exactly was the truththe whole thing is just one big lie. I would love to know what the real Whitacre thinks about this representation. Does he enjoy the exaggerated caricature? Does he hate it because the imbecilic nature at the core of Damon’s role hits too close to home? The activities portrayed are so off the wall and zany that I have to believe screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and Soderbergh just used the outline of fact and made it completely their own. My only complaint would be that it goes maybe ten to twenty minutes too long, finding a repetition that soon becomes obvious and lacking of the witty charm of the start
With a cast of familiar faces and even some comic greatsThe Smothers Brothersit is still Damon that shines above all. His delivery is priceless and his facial expressions genuinely childlike in their enthusiasm. The entire film has him playing this game, unaware of how deep he was getting in and unaware that his extracurricular activities, to be exposed towards the end, made him a hypocrite. As long as he is the center of attention, being the man in the white hat taking down the bad guys with his FBI cohorts in tow, nothing else matters. Speaking of the agents, how great is it seeing Scott Bakula sinking his teeth into a lengthy role again? His straightman to Damon’s goof could not be played more perfectly. And then you get Joel McHale of ‘The Soup’ fame to play the most serious government agent in the world? It’s just Soderbergh having fun with preconceptions, actually casting many comics in serious roles while Jason Bourne himself schlubs around with a permanent cheesy smile plastered on his face
What transpires is funny enough, if just due to the fact a huge criminal investigation is occurring with a moron at its center, risking exposure every second. So excited that he is starring in his own version of all the sitcom television and pulp Hollywood movies he enjoys, the wonderment of having his own tape recorder hidden in his briefcase necessitates him to show someone how cool it is. He is 0014 after all, twice as smart as 007. But what works even better than the actual story is his mind itself. The epitome of Attention Deficit Disorder, Mark Whitacre loses his train of thought on a regular basis. At first you think you may be missing something as a character responds to a question and Damon’s voice-over drowns it out. While important information is being relayed, all we hear are the ramblings of a crazy man, the most mundane things popping into his head as he smiles and nods. Some of these one-liners are so great you almost watch what’s happening to get to the next tangent his brain wanders off towards
So, whether or not the film itself is an accurate portrayal of the subject matter it’s based on is a moot point. The real subject becomes finding out what will happen to Whitacre when the dust settles. Naive to the core, we all know he is due a wakeup call at some point, even if his FBI handlers think he is the bravest man in America doing it all because he has a wife and kids and a sense of moral responsibility. If only they knew he just did it for the rush of excitement and because he couldn’t think past step number one. Why comprehend that unearthing all the wheelings and dealings of a company he held a high position with could cost him his career when you can just enjoy the present and have fun living a duplicitous life? Do not feel sorry for him and do not question his motiveshe really doesn’t have any. Just take a seat and be ready to laugh hard.
