“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” Movie Review
“The Assassination of Jesse James” Plot Summary
Robert Ford, who’s idolized Jesse James since childhood, tries hard to join the reforming gang of the Missouri outlaw, but gradually becomes resentful of the bandit leader.
An epic masterpiece. Thoughtful, philosophical and profoundly existential
With a title almost as long as the 160-movie it names, regular movie-goers might be forgiven for thinking that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford is worth a miss. Too, even, that a title basically giving away the central hub of the film’s plot makes it hard for studio execs to sell the film as a sassy, gun-toting western with shlocky shoot-em-ups and angel eyes Brad Pitt darling it up in the lead role. This was all many were expecting after several re-edits, one being a but-numbing 3? hour cut, were made to a film that actually wrapped up filming in 2005. But what Chopper director Andrew Dominik has delivered, in only his second film, is an beautiful, epic, meditative poem of a western, that once again transforms the genre, once such a stable for conservative normality, by dissecting the myths that created it
Brad Pitt is uber-outlaw Jesse James, co-founder of the James-Younger gang, primarily specialising in train robberies. Casey Affleck is Robert Ford, a clumsy, awkward upstart, who is entranced by Jesse James to the point of obsession. He views him like a celebrity, studying his life, his robberies, his voice and even his mannerisms. He is so entranced that at one point whilst attempting to engage his idol in a conversation during one of James’ tin bath sessions, James very coldly utters to Ford ‘Do you want to be like me? Or do you wanna be me?’.Ford is constantly teased by his fellow thieves and gunmen, taunted for his love and idolisation of the gang ringleader. As the title suggests (or rather gives away), it leads to a tragic conclusion, a conclusion revealed so that the whole film may operate on a level far more complex than mere formulaic convention. Since we know the fate of the hero, it is not about where the journey ends, or indeed how it ends. But rather what the journey is, and how the characters deal with it. James seems to flirt with the idea of death, having been rendered a stalinesque paranoia-case after losing faith in all of his gang members. Towards the end of the film, he relies only on the help of the Ford brothers Charlie and Robert, not being able to trust any one else. He would be proved right, when Robert is the one to pull the trigger
The Assassination of Jesse James is a majestic western. It is beautifully shot in a way that doesn’t just please the eye, but utterly renders both the icy mood and bitterly cold temperature of the film it colours. The acting is first rate, with Brad Pitt playing the cold psychopath that is Jesse James with a subtle viciousness beneath his icy blue eyes. But Casey Affleck is the man who walks away with the film. Every scene he is in, he steals. His Robert Ford is brilliantly balanced between the enthusiastically enthralled and gawkish pathos. His obsession with James is understandable, given the legend of the outlaw that has spun a million myths in its wake, but it is reminiscent, at least to a modern audience, of a Mark Chapman the man who shot John Lennon. In fact one of the many themes running throughout Andrew Dominik’s film is that of the obsession with a myth. He is known as the ‘coward’ but is it to be a coward? Ford idolises James like many people do modern celebrities. When James reveals his spiteful and altogether psychotic edge to Ford, the myth is dispelled, and everything Ford had invested in him becomes crushed. All Ford could do to redeem himself, he felt, would be to kill James, and end the charade. But alas, all that did was strengthen the legend further
Perhaps in another world, it would be pleasant to know that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford gets all the credit it deserves, but it appears to have split many people up the middle. Some people think it is pretentious, and write sniffy articles about the film’s languidness. Others think it is too long and obscure. I am at the point now when it really doesn’t matter when dealing with a film of this magnitude, because it was a profoundly affecting experience, one reminiscent of the beautiful epics Terrence Malick used to make. If you find a better film this year, I would very surprised.

“Frost/Nixon” Movie Review
“Frost/Nixon” Plot Summary
A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon.
Absolutely Brilliant
As a teenager in Australia when Nixon resigned, I didn’t really understand the impact of his actions at the time. It’s only later that I’ve come to believe in his betrayal not just of American politics but of all democracies that have the same fundamental beliefs
So I went to see this film with some anticipation and was not disappointed. If Ron Howard was not considered a great director before, then surely he must be after this. The greatest problem with filming stage plays is overcoming the sense of ’staticness’. But Howard’s superb use of different camera techniques which allow both a sense of movement but do not distract from the stunning acting performances
Whilst Frank Langella is quite rightly getting a lot of attention for his remarkable performance (he manages to humanise Nixon, a feat I would have thought impossible), do not dismiss Michael Sheen’s mesmerising effort as David Frost. Both men inhabit their characters, not just play them
The support cast is excellent; Kevin Bacon reminds me of Eastwood at times and they are the best roles Oliver Platt and Sam Rockwell have had in a while
A masterpiece.

GREAT MOVIE!
I don’t understand why a lot of people didn’t like this movie. The fact is, if you didn’t like the main point of the TV series, or you don’t like the main concept of the movie, you shouldn’t see the movie! It was very colorful (to represent that its based off of the original TV series), it’s very well thought, and it’s good for entertainment! I loved this movie because they really made it seem similar to the TV series in different ways.
Yes, some of it may not make the best of logical sense, but it captures comedy, action, and romance. It is a fun movie and really interesting to keep your eyes glued to the screen! The acting is great, the script is well-written, and the direction of the director is really well done! 10 out of 10!

Excellent! Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this great movie
What an excellent movie this picture was. When I first saw the trailers in October, I thought it might be pretty good.
The Green Mile exceeded my expectations. Tom Hanks leads a wonderful cast in this movie which stands out by far from most others. If you liked Shawshank Redemption, you’ll love this one. I’ve realized just how good Stephen King can write, now that I’ve seen this and Shawshank. It’s three hours long, and worth every minute of it. It touched me in many ways. I was fortunate enough to see it twice. And I will buy it on dvd as soon as it is available. The Green Mile will certainly become a classic. Go see it, you won’t be disappointed.

“G-Force” Plot Summary
A specially trained squad of guinea pigs is dispatched to stop a diabolical billionaire from taking over the world. |
Best FUN movie of 2009
Hi, I watched this movie today and I actually write comments on movies which I hate or LOVE the most. This one belongs to the MOST LOVED category.
G-Force (2009)(********Spoliers*********)
Directed by Academy Award-winning VFX artist Hoyt Yeatman, making his directional debut, G-Force tells the strange story about a secret special US government organization of skilled trained animals. Funded by FBI, this special agent animals got advanced tools, including an high-tech earpiece that allows them to talk to humans. Things went wrong when FBI decided to shutdown the Unit, making G-Force members to crack down the classified case of Leonard Saber (Bill Nighy).
Written by Cormac Wibberley, Marianne Wibberley tells the amazing story of Guinea pigs, happens to be Secret Agents. Even tough the plot evolves with usual ‘Underdog-Pixar 3D story lines’, it really makes a mark during the second half. They managed to created unique personalities to their characters, but at some parts I smelled Stereotypes.
The voice actors were brilliant, especially PenГ©lope Cruz as Juarez the female Spanish Guinea pig, Tracy Morgan as Blaster and Steve Buscemi as Bucky the Hamster. The much surprise came from Nicolas Cage as Speckles the Star-Nosed Mole, and I don’t know why he altered his great sound for this character, I found it difficult to recognizance the original voice. All in all it was Sam Rockwell who wind up the show with his Heroic character Darwin.
And the soul created for this movie by Trevor Rabin was stunning. The score really toned the action sequences, and the story development.
As a VFX student I enjoyed this movie from start to end, it’s a great fun movie, I recommend it to everyone. In story wise and in technically wise it’s eye-candy. I must say I never seen such a CGI execution in detail (not even in Transformers), such a brilliant work from director Hoyt Yeatman. He truly deserves some recognition. And also the legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer teaming again with Walt Disney for his first 3D feature. By G-Force he really marked his position again.
I give this movie 10 out of 10. And I am waiting for the Sequel!
G-Force = Be the Force with YOU.

“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Movie Review
“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Plot Summary
An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.
Surprisingly Good!
Chuck Barris is in bits. His life has been a sham and after the crazy seventies and the start of the excessive eighties, after contemplating suicide, he decides to write down the bizarre tale of his unbelievable life. After being a joke at school and a joke in his teens to the opposite sex, he catches onto the idea that if you are part of the entertainment industry chicks will find you irresistible. After rising through the ranks of the burgeoning TV industry he is approached by a shadowy figure who asks if he’d be interested in helping his country against the forces of communism that threaten Europe, and could, if successful there, threaten the United States itself
For reasons best known to himself, Chuck decides to go for it, maybe for a laugh, maybe to see what the job entails, but as time goes by he realises that his moral flexibility and creative talents may well have found an excellent duel purpose. As he devises a variety of inane shows he finds it exceedingly difficult to mask his covert actions. Added to this he meets a beautiful young woman who seems to like him for who he is, which makes the disturbing secret that he works as a Government Spook as is responsible for a number of assassinations even more difficult to live with
As his life goes on and he becomes a star with the likes of the Gong Show, and his life as a spook is threatened by a mole on the inside Chuck has to delve within himself and figure out exactly what he wants to do with his life, and more importantly, not die
Now let’s cut to the chase here, this film is very good. Sam Rockwell is a revelation as Chuck Barris and his performance is so good it’s frightening. He is amazing in this role and bearing in mind how shockingly awful he was in Charlie’s Angels it makes of an even more surprising film. George Clooney’s direction is assured and well handled and the combination of his skills with the camera and Charlie Kauffman’s brilliantly realised script is something that you just don’t expect to work, but work it does. Clooney wisely elects to keep his supporting role to a minimum and it helps the piece tremendously, even a couple of cameos from close friends don’t spoil what is one of the best directorial debuts ever
Whether Chuck Barris’ story of his life is true or not, this is a top-notch movie that exceeds all expectations and is yet another cinematic masterclass from Charlie Kauffman that, in the hands of George Clooney, becomes another great movie about choices and identity

“Moon” Movie Review
“Moon” Plot Summary
Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet’s power problems.
The sci-fi movie I’ve been praying for…
Let me explain to you why I love the movie Moon so much, why it is such an important film for me and what I hope it means for the future of science fiction cinema
I was born in May 1971 so as I grew up I was exposed to all these new movies full of imagination, creativity and beautiful futuristic designs. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running, Alien, Blade Runner, Outland. These and others embedded themselves in my mind, and as I grew older and revisited them year after year I was impressed on not only an entertainment level but an emotional one as well. A few years ago I began to miss these kinds of films in fact, the only one I saw that even remotely reminded me of them was Soderbergh’s ‘Solaris’ from 2002, and even though I enjoyed it I found my appreciation of it slightly discoloured by Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Solyaris’ from 1972, a film I was never a huge fan of
I blame Star Wars for the decline in thoughtful, story- and character-driven science fiction films. Don’t get me wrong, I was eight when I first saw it and I was fully wrapped up in the Star Wars love explosion in fact, I still am. I still love it and still watch it. It’s just that Star Wars changed the nature of these kinds of films. It started the trend of summer blockbuster action-adventure laser explosion battle movies that we see now. Some of these were great movies but the decline, even the extinction, of deeper meaningful science fiction movies was to upset me for many years
I think I realised this after Independence Day came out in 1996. It’s everything I hate about blockbuster science fiction it had bland characters, an unoriginal storyline, overbearing special effects, awful dialogue and a badly realised conclusion. It was then I realised how much I missed science fiction with much more cerebral content. I wanted to think about what I had seen for days after, be amazed or terrified by the experience. Fireworks are over in a second, inspiration lasts a whole lot longer
I was overjoyed when Soderbergh made Solaris, I’ll not deny that, because I saw it as a return to more thoughtful science fiction. It was excellently realised and shot (the fact that I wasn’t a big fan of the original was my own baggage and shouldn’t have reflected on the quality of the movie) and kept me thinking after the credits had rolled. There was just something missing, something I couldn’t put my finger on. Maybe, in some strange way, the movie had tried too hard to be deep and meaningful
So now I come to 2009 and Duncan Jones’ movie Moon. Here we have a man who grew up with the same movies as me (in fact, he’s only six days younger than I am) and not only wanted to make his own film but also capture the feel and atmosphere of these older flicks. The set design, the story, the special effects were all of the age; models instead of CGI, on-set camera trickery, an involving emotional plot, great design and visuals… this was it. This was the film I’d been waiting for since the mid-1980s, when I’d already exhausted repeated viewings of the old movies and was beginning to become desperate for something less filled with popcorn. The great thing is that I consider Moon to be far better than any science fiction movie that has come out in the last twenty years, and it was done as an independent movie on an incredibly low budget. If these guys can produce this kind of quality film with the resources and talent that they had then this also means that others can do it. Low budgets and cheaper technology means accessibility to filmmakers other than the ones employed by the big studios. That can only be a good thing and promises a great future for science fiction cinema
So thank you, Duncan Jones and all those who helped you make this fantastic, insightful and emotionally charged film. You managed to create something that the Great Movie Machine has failed to do for the last 30 years.

“Four Rooms” Movie Review
“Four Rooms” Plot Summary
Four interlocking tales that take place in a fading hotel on New Year’s Eve.
Amazingly funny
This movie is almost too funny for words. It kept me laughing about it for ages after, and still does.
To start off with, Tim Roth who plays Ted the bellhop, is fantastic! The way he changes from being posh and upper class one minute and then the next minute uses his real voice, all slang and cockney. His character also seems to have a nervous jitter about him which will leave you laughing for ages.
Next, the first segment, ‘The Missing Ingredient’ – While it is funny, it’s the least ammusing out of the four segments. The story of how the witches are trying to unfreeze their goddess is ammusing and the little rhyme that the witch Eva recites : ‘Goddess Diana, fail you I will/ I was to bring you fresh sperm from my Bill/ I had him erect and his semen would follow/ Alas, I was hot, so hot that I swallowed. Therefore, obviously the other witches want eva to get sperm from Ted the bellhop. Check out for Madonna in this segment!
The second segment, ‘The Wrong Man’ – This segement shows Ted ending up in the wrong room, leading to having a gun pointed at his head. My favourite bit in particular from this segment was when Ted ended up half hanging out of the bathroom window squealing ‘HELP!’
The third segement, ‘The Misbehavers’ – This was incredibly funny. My two favourite bits from this segment was a) when the little girl made Ted realise how stupid he was when he realised that he could have washed the vapour rub off his eyelids when his babysitter used to do it to him whenhe was a child. and b) the line Ted screams down the room-service phone to the little girl that goes along the lines of, ‘If there’s not a dead body in that room by the time I get up there, I’m gonna make one!’
The last segment, ‘The Man from Hollywood’ – I found this the funniest segment of them all. Could be because Quentin Tarantino stars in this and I’m a big fan of his (that’s probably the reason I saw this in the first place). Ted finds himself going up to the penthouse with various odd items on his room-service trolley and ends up staying there and getting mixed up in a scheme made by Quentin Tarantino and Paul Calderon. Also, look out for Bruce Willis who’s there too but is uncredited. The trio are hysterical as a bunch of drunk guys on New Year’s Eve. Quentin Tarantino more or less plays himself – a famous director.
This movies is definately a must-see. I give it 10/10
