“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” Movie Review

“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” Plot Summary

Four London working class stiffs pool their money to put one in a high stakes card game, but things go wrong and they end up owing half a million pounds and having one week to come up with the cash.

    entertaining

For $8 million, this is a fricking monument of 1990’s film. The first time I saw it I laughed at most of the jokes and followed the plot with pleasure. That’s more than I can say about any number of movies in the 1990’s that cost ten times as much to make and starred pricey talent. The editing is clever and cute. The casting is just short of flawless. Of the four principles, only Bacon seemed consistent to me. The minor parts were sometimes spectacular, esp. Big & Little Chris and Barry the Baptist

There are some legitimate complaints about this movie. The big one is that it doesn’t really go anywhere or mean anything. It seems like an awful lot of flash and talent to end up saying nothing about anything. But um it’s not like Lock, Stock is trying to be anything it isn’t, so maybe it’s not a valid critique after all. Considering how long Tarrantino’s influence has been around, it’s a little unfair to call Ritchie on imitating him. There are some similarities large casts, distinct characters, clever dialogue, rapid shifts in narratives from one string to another and shifting in time, and few other things. I think the problem is that years of dumbing down by Hollywood have almost eliminated all these things. The influence is there certainly, but it would not seem as pronounced if there were any other hugely exposed filmmakers in recent memory that put as much emphasis on dialogue and character besides Tarantino

I haven’t watched MTV since the mid-1980’s, so the style of Lock Stock and Snatch didn’t seem trite to me. Some people I talked to said that the film style was too much like the average car commercial or pop video, which is getting the influence backwards, but I could see how those associations would spoil the experience.

    “Kindergarten Cop” Movie Review

    “Kindergarten Cop” Plot Summary

A tough cop is given his most difficult assignment: masquerade as a a kindergarten teacher in order to find a drug dealer.

    Enjoyable fun sweet/tough natured comedy

Its normally every other day you see Arnold in a tough guy role e.g. The Terminator series and here he portrays a professional cop, until he is forced to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher, an absolute genius move from the director of ‘Twins’ Reitman. Schwarzenegger is very convincing in this new role as a man who has to live two very different lives and the sheer humour of seeing him in this position is an essential watch for anyone. His character here is amazing, a real laugh with or at character, living humorously, seriously and emotionally throughout, a reflection of a real person’s lives, reflecting society traits. It is hard to accept him as a great actor sometimes which, to many stubborn fans is emphasised here. He performed well as the tough/sentimental guy. The story is very well crafted and thankfully always believable, maybe apart from the ending. It is very consistent with different ideologies thrown around to add up to a slow moving story completed with a fast flowing ending. The use of encoding ideologies involving parenthood, crime, jobs, relationship, loyalty, drugs and friendship etc are all well used to emphasise society’s most important factors. As a comedy the main method used was for the tough guy to be creamed into a sweet natured role, which was great to watch. The children all convey a menacing iconography which is also enjoyable to watch

I loved Pamela Reed’s character. Reed (Junior) was fantastic as the sarcastic partner to Arnold and was very enjoyable to watch, watch out for one of her last lines. There are many twists used which add to the tension of the film, mostly conveying a comedy element which justifies the genre. The use of a stereotype villain allows younger audiences to appreciate the character, always aware of who he is and what he is planning to do. The dark distinctive music playing is always associating with him, creating a conventional but good feel to the nature of the character. The story is built up well because nothing is rushed. Context is always believable. Arnie’s relationship with the children is definitely the key part of the film and is a must watch. if you like Arnie’s tough guy roles, the this is a complete opposite – he is a class act here as a sentimental teacher!8.5/10

    “Raging Bull” Movie Review

    “Raging Bull” Plot Summary

An emotionally self-destructive boxer’s journey through life, as the violence and temper that leads him to the top in the ring, destroys his life outside it.

    Incredible acting

‘Raging Bull’ is a masterpiece of filmmaking. It is entertaining, but to me, it is more of a technical movie than an entertaining movie

The acting is undescribable. Some terrific performances are featured in this film, especially Robert De Niro’s performance, which is the stuff of legends. It was probably one of the most predictable Academy Awards ever that year, because Robert De Niro just blew everyone else away. Joe Pesci brings us another amazing performance. Martin Scorsese’s directing is near perfect, and we are treated to great black and white cinematography. Basically everything about this movie had ‘OSCAR’ stamped on its forehead

Although ‘Raging Bull’ is, in a technical sense, one of the greatest movies ever made, it fails to entertain on all levels. There are many moments in the movie that are incredibly entertaining, however, there are some moments where it just seems to be too slow-paced. I am usually all for slow-paced movies, as it helps to build up the plot and the characters, but I feel that ‘Raging Bull’ could have been cut short 15 or 20 minutes and it would have been more entertaining, and still just as great when it comes to all the technical aspects

Sum-up: If you are looking for some of the best acting you will ever see, look no further than ‘Raging Bull.’ If you want entertainment, you will find it in ‘Raging Bull’, but it probably won’t be as much entertainment as you want.

    “Sherlock Holmes” Movie Review

    “Sherlock Holmes” Plot Summary

Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. add synopsis

    Bloody Brilliant!

‘Sherlock Holmes’ is part-comedy, part-thriller, part-romance, and part-buddy movie. It is also completely brilliant

The film’s plot concerns a mysterious plot by the menacing Lord Blackwood. Holmes (Downey Jr.), Watson (Law), and an alluring past love interest (McAdams) must work together- sometimes reluctantly- to crack the case. It sounds simple, but a number of ominous supporting players and adrenaline-inspiring set pieces make it constantly entertaining and riveting

The perpetually likable Robert Downey Jr. takes up the torch as Sherlock Holmes. There’s no need to compare his work to that of Basil Rathbone- the two performances could not be more different. Downey Jr. makes Holmes both comedic and competent. His accent is convincing, and his delivery is as dead-pan as ever. In Guy Ritchie’s revisionist take, Holmes has become a comic action hero, and Downey Jr. pulls off both the comedy and the action seamlessly. Jude Law lends great support as Watson; his take on the character is more traditional, but he makes a great comedic straight-man as well. McAdams also does well as an American femme fatale whose allegiances are always in question

Stylistically, the film combines Ritchie’s ‘guns-blazing’ sensibilities with period detail and witty dialogue. The quick-cut shots and fast-paced visual flashbacks/explanations suit the source material surprisingly well. The musical score is effectively creepy; it evokes the air of the Rathbone films and the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novels. Similarly, the costumes and art direction capture the time period, and arrest the audience visually. The script is chock-full of funny lines, and the cast delivers them well

While purists may shudder at the sight of Sherlock in the boxing arena, Ritchie’s ‘Holmes’ is fun, fast-paced, and fresh. Case closed.
