“Siege” Movie Review

“Siege” Plot Summary

The secret US abduction of a suspected terrorist leads to a wave of terrorist attacks in New York that lead to the declaration of martial law. add synopsis

A Remarkable Film

This is a remarkable movie from the director of Glory (also starring Denzel Washington). Not so much because it was a believable movie at the time it was made, but because of the eerieness of many of the scenes. If you pay attention, there is even a shot of the Twin Towers, which is very unnerving. Denzel Washington standing in front of the rubble of his office, which has just been blown up… This is probably just speculation on my part, but what went through my head when I re-watched this movie recently, is whether it was possible that the 9/11 people had seen this stuff. Beside the blown up buildings and the shot of the Twin Towers is the way hardline general Bruce Willis goes about solving the problem – doing _exactly_ what Ariel Sharon has recently done in the West Bank. Lock off the town/neighborhood, arrest all males in a specific age range, lock them up in temporary concentration camps (in the Boer War sense of the word) and see who’s wanted. One of the more questionable avenues the film takes is the justification of torture to obtain information, although it is also shown to be useless in the second of the two incidences.

Another thing to note is that this movie simply isn’t the same movie after September 11th. Which is remarkable of itself, because most movies about current events are made before the fact, rather than after.

    “The Bodyguard” Plot Summary

A former Secret Service agent takes on the job of bodyguard to a pop singer, whose lifestyle is most unlike a President’s.

    Great movie

Has everything. Whitney acts better than Costner, but great story and well made

    Loved the references to Yojimbo

Good country scenes with the father from the Waltons. The characters rang true

The jealousy of Rachel’s sister rang true and added another dimension to the movie

And then there is the music. Incredible. Made the best use of Whitney’s voice. Most movies age, but in 2009 it still felt contemporary.1 point dropped for Costner’s acting. He is wooden in a number of scenes and doesn’t seem to choose the best delivery for each line.

    “The Frighteners” Plot Summary

After a car accident in which his wife, Debra, was killed and he was injured, Frank Bannister develops psychic abilities allowing him to see…

    Enjoyable

I’m always up for a good ghost story, and this i found worth the time and effort of watching

Mike Fox was very good. One of his best performances, i thought. A good solid adult role playing a shuckster making not-your-normal living. The character definitely had one of the stranger ways of paying-the-bills in moviedom

And Combs was a hoot and a half. Think Dr. Herbert West if the wacky doctor had gone into law enforcement instead of reanimating bodies

Busey did a very nice job of being the homicidal maniac. He left no doubt that his character was a total nutcase

Usually i’m not so impressed by movies being shot in New Zealand as for some reason, tackiness is sometimes an unintended result. But for this movie, the New Zealand location worked very well

I liked the art design on the movie case. It fit the movie to a tee

Actually worth watching? Sure. It’s a good story told with good production values and good performances by the actors. It’s one of my favorites and i have my own personal copy which i pull out and have fun re-watching every once in a while.

    “88 Minutes” Movie Review

    “88: 88 Minutes” Plot Summary

In Seattle, the successful forensic psychiatrist and college professor Jack Gramm is in evidence since…

Frantic and exciting thriller with good performances from Al Pacino and his nemesis Neal McDonough

Tense and suspenseful thriller film with a stunning race against time. This Hichcockian movie deals about a forensic psychologist and University professor with tortured past named Jack Grimm (Al Pacino ) who receives a phone call telling him which has only eighty eight minutes to live. Jack was witness on trail against serial killer Jon Foster (Neal McDonough)and influenced the tribunal to condemn him to death row. In narrow time he desperately seeks to communicate with a problematic student (Ben McKenzie,OC), his associate Shelby (Amy Brenneman), assistant (Alicia Witt), his friend and FBI agent(William Forsythe), a security guard (Brendan Fletcher) and University dean (Deborah Kara Unger). Meanwhile being pursued by a delinquent (Stephen Moyer) and besieged by numerous threatening cellular calls

Gripping, original action movie with Al Pacino desperately trying to find the means avoid to be murdered. Acceptable thriller full of intrigue and tense, this is a fast-paced, stylized action-suspense film. The tension of this picture keeps snowballing as the clock ticks ever close for continuous killings. The tale appears to unfold in real time as the many on cellular calls will verify. Most unusual is the device of having the victim play desperado and hunt the killer, and saving himself, as time runs out. The flick is well filmed in Seattle, Washington State and Vancouver ,British Columbia , Canada. Casting is frankly magnificent, Al Pacino as tormented psychiatrist, unsettling when approaches his last minutes of life, though Neal McDonough takes honors as a psychopath who attempts to turn the tables on the victims before Pacino can save them. Plus, a good secondary cast, such as William Forsythe, Deborah Kara Unger, and Stephen Moyer, among them. Adequate musical score accompanying the action by Ed Shearmur and inventively photographed by Denis Lenoir, both of whom share his skills in the following John Avnet’s movie ?Righteous kill? also with Al Pacino and Trilby Glover who again plays a defense attorney. The motion picture is regularly directed by John Avnet because of it contains some gaps and flaws. Avnet is a nice director who achieved his greatest success with ?Fried green tomatoes? and ?Up close and personal? and failures as ?The war?. He directed and produced some hits, though today also making TV movies as the excellent ?The uprising ? and television episodes.

    “Goodfellas” Movie Review

    “Goodfellas” Plot Summary

Henry Hill and his friends work their way up through the mob hierarchy.

    A classic mobster film.

This is one hell of a film about the mobsters, based on a true story and coming from one of the great directors of all time. This is about Henry Hill, the narrator of the story, an Irish simple person who gets involved with the Mafia at a very young age and continues his life through it. There is no major plot in this film, just isolated incidents one of which was the turning point of Hill’s life. Scorsese, as brilliant as he ever was, shows violence, sex and drugs etc in his own trademark style. And his actors helps him to make this film one of the classics

Robert DeNiro is not present in much of the film, nor his acting leaves too much impression. The three actors who really did their best job here are Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci and Lorraine Bracco. I hate to say that most youngsters today don’t know too much about Liotta or how talented he was. I asked my younger brother about him and he said, ‘The man who did the voice on GTA: Vice City?’. This is partly because Liotta did not get too many big roles after that, especially in recent years. But here he is just brilliant as Hill. It’s Pesci’s one of the best too. Playing a mad mobster with dark sense of humor wasn’t his usual type. And Lorraine Bracco becomes the perfect lead female in such type of films

The film’s got smart screenplay and excellent cinematography. And I don’t know how many times Scorsese will be denied his Academy recognition. I hate to see a lifetime achievement award as his first Oscar. But things are going like that.

    “Dreamcatcher” Movie Review

    “Dreamcatcher” Plot Summary

Friends on a camping trip discover that the town they’re vacationing in, is being plagued in an unusual fashion by parasitic aliens from outer space. add synopsis

    Well-adapted Stephen King story.

At first glance, Lawrence Kasdan might seem an odd choice to be directing a slasher/science fiction movie based on a Stephen King novel. But the story revolves around a group of friends who grew up together and who are having an adventure in the woods, albeit with an extraterrestrial, so it works out quite well. William Goldman also wrote the screenplay, so this film has a good pedigree

The four friends grew up together in a small Maine town, and what binds them to one another is their encounter with saving a retarded boy, Duddits, from being tormented by the school jocks. Duddits isn’t what he appears to be, however, and through their friendship, the four acquire extra-sensory powers – being able to read other people’s minds, being able to find lost things, etc

The four guys are out on their annual getaway in the Maine woods when a lost hunter staggers into their cabin one day. He’s sick, though, and in due course it’s revealed that he’s been infected by some alien organism, which resembles a large wormlike creature that has grown inside him. It escapes and kills one of them, and then the extraterrestrial appears and takes over the body of the remaining guy (the other two were off on a beer run).

The film is about stopping the alien from taking over the Earth. Its plan is to deposit these worm creatures in the reservoir that provides Boston’s drinking water, so that they can infect the population and multiply. The alien hits a snag, though, because he’s using the body of a man who can communicate through ESP, and his remaining friends realize what’s going on and set out to stop him

One of the flaws in the movie comes about with the introduction of Morgan Freeman and Tom Sizemore at this point. They play the leaders of some special ops force whose job it is to track and eliminate extraterrestrials. It was necessary for the story to advance to have the presence of this military unit, however, it didn’t make sense to have the two best known actors in the film chewing up unnecessary scenery. Lesser knowns would have worked better and these characters roles subdued

I won’t spoil the ending here, but overall I thought this was a pretty entertaining film.

    “Knocked Up” Movie Review

    “Knocked Up” Plot Summary

For fun loving party animal Ben Stone, the last thing he ever expected was for his one night stand to show up on his doorstep eight weeks later to tell him she’s pregnant.

    Funny

‘Knocked-Up’ was far better than I had hoped. I was not impress with the ‘40 Year-Old Virgin’ or ‘Superbad’ which were crass and uninspiring. ‘Knocked-Up’ in stark contrast still maintains the adolescence humor of ‘40 Year-Old Virgin’ or ‘Superbad’ but is far more intelligent and witty, bordering at times on comedic brilliance. It is also able to match the comedy with a sincere thread throughout, which is hard to achieve. Seth Rogen is great as the expectant father, I am unsure how much of the script was improvised but there were many moments of laugh-out-loud originality, the whole cast delivers on the acting front. At times the jokes can be a little too crude, but overall they are well managed. Special mention to the scene in the Las Vegas hotel between Rogen and Paul Rudd, high on mushrooms their interplay is spot-on and it is moments like this which make it memorable

The one criticism I do have is the last 30 minutes, the gags do not seem to work as well due to the more serious tone, and the film lumbers a little. I respect that the film wanted to make an emotional punch at the end but it dallied a little too long.’Knocked-Up’ is an enjoyable film and I recommend that you make an effort to watch it.

“The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” Movie Review

“The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” Plot Summary

After her much older husband forces a move to a suburban retirement community, Pippa Lee engages in a period of reflection and finds herself heading toward a quiet nervous breakdown. add synopsis

    Many roles, one good performance

Robin Wright Penn first became famous for a starring role in a soap opera, ‘Santa Barbara.’ And here she is 25 years later in another one, made for the silver screen this time. Though this movie is from a novel by the director Rebecca Miller (who’s playwright Arthur Miller’s daughter) and adapted by her, it’s very much material for a soap of the old ‘Valley of the Dolls’ variety with desperate housewives, impossibly rich adulterous husbands, mysterious sexy losers, drugs, changed names, a shifting cast, people running off to begin a new life, and so on

The cast is intriguing. ‘Race Matters’ author Cornel West and Monica Belluci appear in minor roles; doubtless other celebs are hidden here or there, and the venerable Shirley Knight plays a senior citizen neighbor. Maria Bello (replacing Maggie Gyllenhaal, who dropped out) plays a drug-addled mother in turbulent flashbacks; Winona Ryder (whose personal history is interesting, if not her acting) is a disloyal friend in the present when Pippa has been married for 25 years to a prominent publisher (Alan Arkin). In Seventies clothes, Julianne Moore (in flashbacks) is a lesbian who shoots bondage and discipline photos. Keanu Reeves is the mysterious sexy loser. Reeves, which may surprise some, gives the movie’s only interesting performance, one that’s subtle, understated and complex, that implies more than it says. All the others parts are written and acted to scream more than signify. Every so often Reeves does something like this. Why not more often? The flashbacks are in three segments: dysfunctional childhood; runaway dissolute youth; run-up to marriage. The young Pippa is played by two younger actors. When Penn’s costumed and made up in flashbacks to look young, she’s almost unrecognizable as the person in the present. Pippa’s father, with the strange and unexplained name of Des Sarkissian (Tim Guinee), is a minister. Over time, Pippa discovers that her devouring mom is a suburban speed freak; the daughter is the slave to her mother’s mood shifts and must run away. When she does she never goes back, but becomes a drug user herself, though the only scenes dwelt on are of a transitional time with an aunt((Robin Weigert), who turns out to be Julianne Moore’s lover — who, incredibly, is surprised to discover Pippa’s being posed in the B&D photos at the apartment. Finally the flashbacks reach the point where Pippa, now a pseudo-bohemian with weird hair and artistic clothing, is taken up by Herb (Arkin), discovered living in a modernistic white mansion by the sea and wearing a hair piece; he’s about 55, Pippa 25. He wants to get rid of his wife (Bellucci) but he doesn’t have to: she offs herself in front of them (and guests, and the cook, watching from the kitchen) at the lunch table. Some of the party scenes at the seaside pad, more languid than this moment, almost evoke Fellini. Belluci has replaced Ekberg, and we’re outside Stanford, not Rome

Robin Wright Penn, poor thing, has said in an interview, breaking into tears, that this is the most meaningful role of her career. This is because she feels her character is depicted in so much detail. But this is naive. With good writing and acting, a character can be richly shown in scenes set over a few hours or days, while a turbulent back story can provide distraction without enlightenment. None of the lurid blasts from the past shed any particular light on Pippa’s present except to say that sometimes women with messy beginnings wind up in conventional and relatively serene marriages. All those melodramatic and colorful scenes mean nothing: they add no insight into the characters. With all the flashbacks, nobody seems real. How Pippa got to be in her present state of sedated uxoriousness with a feisty 80- year-old, what her 25 years of marriage to him were like, raising two grown children, Brian (Ryan McDonald), a young lawyer, and Grace (Zoe Kazan, Elia’s granddaughter), a photojournalist working on the front lines: or all this little is said, and less shown

If this movie had a heart, it would be the present-time dying marriage with Herb (Arkin), whose heart is in shaky shape, though his ego is as robust as ever. At the outset the couple has just moved to a posh Connecticut retirement compound because Herb has recently had three heart attacks. Arkin has his now familiar feisty manner, but his character, still apparently active in publishing even nearing 80, is less simplistic and caricatural than the grandpa in Little Miss Sushine. There are signs that Herb may be losing his marbles, but it turns out to be Pippa who’s sleepwalking — and, new thing, sleep-driving her car to a convenience store where she’s rescued by Chris (Keanu Reeves), 35- year-old son of Shirley Knight and staying with her after a meltdown in his life out West. A gentle relationship with Chris develops. He’s a somewhat crudely limned Jesus figure, with Jesus actually emblazoned all over his (surprisingly flabby) chest, and a failed attempt to become a Jesuit in his background. But despite these outlines, his understated performance makes him the only person capable of surprising us

This movie reminded me of the late Walt Stack, longtime president of San Francisco’s Dolphin South End Runners Club. ‘You’ve got to hand it to us turtles,’ he used to say at the start of a race. ‘We’re the ones who make you hotshots look good.’ You’ve got to hand it to lousy movies like ‘Pippa Lee’: watching them makes you appreciate the good ones.
