“Frost/Nixon” Movie Review

“Frost/Nixon” Plot Summary

A dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon.

Absolutely Brilliant

As a teenager in Australia when Nixon resigned, I didn’t really understand the impact of his actions at the time. It’s only later that I’ve come to believe in his betrayal not just of American politics but of all democracies that have the same fundamental beliefs

So I went to see this film with some anticipation and was not disappointed. If Ron Howard was not considered a great director before, then surely he must be after this. The greatest problem with filming stage plays is overcoming the sense of ’staticness’. But Howard’s superb use of different camera techniques which allow both a sense of movement but do not distract from the stunning acting performances

Whilst Frank Langella is quite rightly getting a lot of attention for his remarkable performance (he manages to humanise Nixon, a feat I would have thought impossible), do not dismiss Michael Sheen’s mesmerising effort as David Frost. Both men inhabit their characters, not just play them

The support cast is excellent; Kevin Bacon reminds me of Eastwood at times and they are the best roles Oliver Platt and Sam Rockwell have had in a while

A masterpiece.

    “Underworld: Evolution” Movie Review

    “Underworld 2″ Plot Summary

Underworld: Evolution continues the saga of war between the vampires and the Lycans. The film goes back…

    A truly sensational action/horror

Underworld:Evolution is without question one of the top action horror movies in the past five years. Tons of amazing action sequences shot by a director who understands the genre and how to make them look good. There are no crazy close-ups with music video editing which exist in so many other films purely to cover up how weak the fight choreography and special effects are. Not in Evolution. They are shot so professionally and executed seamlessly. There is tons of gore and over the top followed by even more over the top death and destruction! And the great thing is that the story (no matter how unbelievable) is actually quite enthralling. Lots of back story in terms of the history of werewolves and vampires and how they came to exist etc. etc. Kate Beckinsale could be the hottest chick in Hollywood. Solid acting, great special effects, superb cinematography (check out the lighting in several scenes) and extremely precise and well timed editing. This movie by far surpasses the original. Sure there are some continuity problems but big deal. A must for horror and action fans alike. AND THOSE OF YOU WHO THOUGHT THAT KATE BECKINSALE SPINNING AND SHOOTING THROUGH THE FLOOR IN THE ORIGINAL WAS COOL, CHECK OUT ‘NEMESIS’ WHICH UNDERWORLD RIPPED OFF AND YOU’LL SEE SOMETHING MUCH MUCH COOLER!!

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Movie Review

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Plot Summary

Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people.

A great film by Ridley Scott!!!

KOH is not Gladiator 2, first of all the movie is not about a slave dealing with Romans, at the heart of the movie is the battle for Jerusalem and two sides the Christians and the Muslims. KOH in my opinion raises up more issues than what Gladiator did and then some

The acting was great, Neeson as Godfrey of Ibelin , though he has a small role , leaves quite an impact. Bloom is wonderful, Eva Green is hot, Jeremy Irons is at his usual best , David Thewlis also puts up a great performance as Hospitaller, and Edward Norton turns in a memorable performance

The story is that in 1184 during the time of the Crusades , Balian a blacksmith becomes a knight to defend Jerusalem from Muslim invaders

Bloom as the protagonist who doesn’t believe in God or religion, ‘I am just a blacksmith’, undergoes a spiritual journey that tests both his values as a man (do I stay here and fight for people of Jerusalem) and his ideals about religion. He also has his morality come into question through almost the entire movie, does his give into temptation and join the dissenters of the church (Guy De Lusignan) or does he kill and lie to get what is offered a seat of the throne

The directing is brilliant, I believe this is shot on location if not, the sets, the special effects and budget really show. Ridley Scott as the veteran has a great eye for setting up locales, key battle scenes and incredible emotional characters

Balian’s character is also 100% vulnerable he takes his series of hard shots and hangs on to claim victory just when you think the numbers are against the guy he finds a way to outsmart his opponents

Back to story. Balian kills a priest who mocks his late wife who committed suicide. ’she is in hell because she committed suicide’ and so Balian out of rage and the contempt this guy has for him kills him. He is now a fugitive. When he learns Godfrey of Ibelin is his father, , Godfrey wants him to fight in the crusades and go to Jerusalem

Balian still in shock doesn’t want to go with his dad. When the authorities come to claim Balian and execute him, there is a big battle which results in some of Godfrey’s nights being killed. Balian seeing the sacrifice the knights have done for him, finally does go with his father

Balian gets christened as a knight, but doesn’t believe in God, is not an atheist per say, he believes in death but he doesn’t believe in the greater good

This is a key issue being brought up throughout the movie, what is religion? Is it just words or actions that we live by. Does God really offer us hope and salvation, and the answer is yes

When his dad dies and through the speeches with Hospitaller (David Thewlis) who talks about him about religion that Balian he starts to have a spiritual awakening of sorts. Exposed to the poor people of Jerusalem , Balian uses his new power as a lord and a knight to build up shelters and provide water for the people as he says which I am paraphrasing he is trying to be a good man and trying to aid the helpless

Hospitaller: ‘Religion is not made up by fanatics.. it’s about your rite of actions’ He makes the analogy that religion really is about who you are as a person and by what you do , not by what you preach as a so called Christian

Eva Green is Sybilla the future queen of Jerusalem whose brother King Baldiwn (Norton) is sick and near death. Sybilla likes Balian of Ibelin (Bloom) because she feels he is brave and good. She hates her husband Guy who is one of the knights for King of Jerusalem. She mentions she was forced to marry him in a prearranged deal so there’s an internal conflict with Guy and Balian. Guy and Balian previously meet early on when Godfrey introduces him to Lord Tiberius (Jeremy Irons) and Hospitaller. Sybilla also undergoes a transformation in the film as well, when the King dies, she sees in Balian leadership that is absent in her husband

Balian visits places in Jerusalem like the place of Christ’s crucifixion and gathers within himself spiritual strength and a sense of direction to the turbulence around him

The Muslim characters in the movie consists of Saladin (Ghassan Massoud)and , Muslim Grandee (Nasser Memazia who want Jerusalem for other uses such as for the nation of Islam. I should say the Muslim characters in this film get a large bulk of screen time. Furthermore, their characters are treated with respect and almost admiration. In fact Scott tells us their back story as well and we see display of Muslim religion in the movie such as Muslim praying in mosques and in the city of Jerusalem

This reminds me of the Palestian/Israeli conflict of sorts where you have both sides that believe in God but are battling for the control of one city, despite the fact that they both profess to believing in God. Some questions to ponder are these other people with religious ideals worse than we say they are, or are they merely some religious fanatics misusing the name of God for power? Couple that the moral questions that almost every character goes through and the questioning and denouncement and spiritual awakening of God and my you got yourself a thought provoking film

KOH is a great film. Not only is it full of action and great characters and wonderful acting but it also has a good story and challenges you as an audience to think about the messages in the movie long after you’ve left the theater!!!

    “Scary Movie 3″ Plot Summary

In the third installment of the Scary Movie franchise, Cindy has to investigate mysterious crop circles and video tapes, and help the President in preventing an alien invasion. add synopsis

One of the funniest movies ever created!

    Spoilers herein

In this hilarious third installment of the ’scary movie’ series, Anna Faris is back as Cindy Campbell, who has now graduated from college and is a reporter. Along with her friend Brenda Meeks (regina hall) Cindy finds out about a mysterious video tape that kills whoever watches it 7 days later (spoofing ‘The Ring’) while doing a story about a mysterious crop circle that has appeared in Tom Logan’s (Charlie Sheen) yard. Then, with the help of George (Simon Rex) Cindy has to stop an alien invasion

I thought this movie was absolutely hilarious. I’ve heard a lot of people say negative things about the plot, jokes, etc. why? because those people think too much! This movie is supposed to be totally mindless – and it is, and that’s what makes it funny! I mean, why complain about ‘Scary Movie 3′ when there’s crap out there like ‘Scary Movie 2′???Top 10 funniest Quotes/scenes10) BRENDA: Cindy…the TV’s leaking!9) PRESIDENT HARRIS: These men and woman have died fighting for their country. Send flowers to their bitches and ho’s.8) Cody is drawing Tabitha (aka Samara) and he made a flipbook of her doing a little dance. it’s hilarious (you have to see it to get it)7) GEORGE: (in the rap battle) I’m a white boy but my neck is red I put miracle whip on my wonder bread6) SHERIFF: Watch…what happens…to the taco!5) George is at a rap battle full of African Americans and he puts his hood on…and over his hat, it looks like a cone, like a KKK personBLACK GUY: Au $hit!4) CINDY: Oh, cody! Are you having one of your visions?CODY: I see a little girl. With black hair. She wants to kill you. Your period starts in three…two…one…CINDY: Oww…Cody, what else can you see?CODY: I see a little boy and a grown woman, but no father…CINDY: Oh, Cody…CODY: I see you kneeling in dog $hit…3) Tabitha is leaking water from the well all over Brenda’s floor

BRENDA: Cindy, this b*tch is messin’ up my floor!!!2) CINDY: I just feel like I want something more than just good sex…BRENDA: Yeah, I know. you want commitment

CINDY: No, I want GREAT sex!BRENDA: Girl, I know what you talking’ about! You want a guy that goes wham wham wham!(a little preschooler stares at Brenda)BRENDA: DID I SAY STOP DRAWING???1) GEORGE: Okay, then. Fresh. I’ll see you guys uh, tomorrow night!(he turns around and takes his niece out the door)(someone throws a huge container of crayons at the door)BRENDA: Now who the f*ck did that???!!!Also, I’ve heard a number of complaints about how Cody keeps getting hit by cars, basketballs, and thrown out of windows, etc. I mean, it’s not like he got hurt while filming it!!The only reason this movie didn’t get a ten was the michael jackson scene. I thought that was totally disgusting/gross

The opening scene with pamela anderson was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen….(i.e. ‘Are you okay…?’ ‘I’m coming for you, precious…’) I totally recommend it!

“Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans” Plot Summary

An origins story centered on the centuries-old feud between the race of aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.

    Absolutely Loved it!!!!!

This one is my favorite of all of them!!! I loved Underworld and Underworld Evolution but since this one revolves around my favorite character it has become the best one to me. I loved the casting of Rhona Mitra as Sonja. It’s very evident why Victor was so attached to Selene. Michael Sheen as Lucien as always was awesome, only in this one there’s so much more of him, scenes and personality. The story is good, the action is GREAT!!! In this one you really see why Lucien was such a menace to the vampires and not just an inconvenient annoyance. Just saw it last night and could have gotten in line to see it again when it ended. Plan on seeing it again this weekend.

    “Underworld” Plot Summary

Selene, a beautiful vampire warrior, is entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. Although she is aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with Michael, a werewolf who longs for the war to end.

Underworld A Decent Gothic Sci-Fi Action Adventure

Underworld is a decent Gothic sci-fi action adventure from director Len Wiseman who does a good job in making this movie but there are some flaws that weigh it down. I’ll get back to that later. Kate Beckinsale turns in a solid performance as the lead Selene a vampire Death Dealer in the middle of a war between her race and werewolves known as Lycans. She looks great in leather and is convincing as the character especially in the action/fight sequences. Scott Speedman is decent as Michael Corvin who eventually becomes a powerful vampire/werewolf hybrid because something to do with his blood. He gets a few fight sequences near the end that are impressive but for the most of the movie he’s either being chased, running, or being held prisoner. Speedman however like Beckinsale is good as his character. Michael Sheen is terrific as Lucian the Lycan leader whose supposed to have been dead and is after Michael for unknown reasons until those motives are revealed later on in the film. Sheen’s role may get cut short near the end but he does a great job of portraying someone who you’re not sure is either the villain or a man simply driven by revenge who is willing to do whatever is necessary to defend his race. Well done. Bill Nighy is equally impressive as one of the vampire Lord’s Viktor but he isn’t given a lot of screen time and his showdown between both Michael and Selene near the end felt a bit rushed. He’s also easily defeated but Nighy is effective in the role none the less. The rest of the cast including Shane Brolly, Sophia Myles, and a brief appearance by Wentworth Miller are okay in their roles but don’t have much to do. The action/fight sequences are well executed but a slow pace in between made the movie fee a little long. The film seemed to be juggling a bit too many characters and it sort of lacked a central villain because there are quite a few of them in this one. If they had focused on just one instead of Nighy, Brolly, Sheen, and many more the movie would’ve been a little better. It did have a Gothic feel which seemed to fit with the tone of the film and made it a little different than some sci-fi action movies out there. The music seemed to match well with what was happening on the screen as well. So despite some flaws Underworld may not be the greatest movie ever made but it’s certainly not the worst either. Overall Underworld has an intricate story, intense action, some suspense, cool special effects, and good performances by the cast who make this sci-fi movie worth watching at least once.

    “The Departed” Plot Summary

Two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy’s identities.

    Exciting, writhing mole thriller

An enjoyable, pacy film. It’s let down a bit with rather rudimentary, unlovely filming and a Michael Mann-like unintelligibility in the way in which the script is delivered

But the performances are worth the price of a theatre ticket alone. Leonardo diCaprio is excellent, the equal of a striking Jack Nicholson. Ray Winstone’s accent is rubbish, but the rest of his performance is as good as the best. Matt Damon, Martin Sheen and (‘newcomer’) Vera Farmiga bring up a good seond tier of support acts… but Mark Wahlberg’s performance is as bad as his hair piece (yes, hair piece).

It’s also a peculiarly edited film. Sequences even as short as a few seconds can be made up of many different shots. Scorsese grafts the whole together with a carefully selected and dovetailed soundtrack. It’s a very fluid, even slippery way of pulling the film together, but it lends itself to the duplicitousness of characters and film alike. 7/10

    “Scary Movie 4″ Plot Summary

Cindy finds out the house she lives in is haunted by a little boy and goes on a quest to find out who killed him and why. Also, Alien “Tr-iPods” are invading the world and she has to uncover the secret in order to stop them.

    Funnier than Scary Movie 2

Scary Movie 4, the direct sequel to Scary Movie 3 (both movies are by director David Zucker and this time around with his longtime film-making friend Jim Abrahams of Naked Gun fame who helped pen this script). This time they spoof such films as The Village, Saw, War of the Worlds, The Grudge, Brokeback Mountain and also Tom Cruise’s Oprah incident. It’s really amazing how the filmmakers are able to bring together all these different films into a somewhat coherent screenplay, which borders on funny to average (though there are a few hilarious moments – such as when Cindy is ‘cleaning’ Mrs. Norris). Returning are Scary Movie alums Anna Faris as the ever funny Cindy Campbell and Regina Hall as the hilarious Brenda Meeks. Also returning from Scary Movie 3 are Leslie Neilsen as President Harris (he’s still great at 80 years of age!), Simon Rex as George, and Charlie Sheen as Tom Logan). Also returning from Scary Movie 1 though in a different role is Carmen Elektra! Though the Scary Movie formula is starting to run thin, it’s still great to see this type of slapstick comedy out there.
