“Observe and Report” Movie Review
“Observe and Report” Plot Summary
Bi-polar mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt is called into action to stop a flasher from turning shopper’s paradise into his personal peep show. But when Barnhardt can’t bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective, is recruited to close the case. |
Very good, great messages in the film!
For those who didn’t like it, they probably don’t like dry comedy. The movie had some very serious undertones. The theme about fulfilling your goals and continuing to strive towards your dream no matter what the adversity is, are both positive and powerful messages which is a strong mix with some very crude but acceptable humor. This movie delivered some very positive messages and was very funny in the process, messages that wouldn’t have been as powerful had it been a film like 40-Year-Old-Virgin, which even itself had some serious undertones in it by the end of the film. There is nothing depicted in this film that you haven’t heard illustrated in a dirty joke, and people are taking it way too seriously.

“Million Dollar Baby” Plot Summary
A hardened trainer/manager works with a determined woman in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer.
Beautifully acted, beautifully shot, intimate and profound
The thing that initially struck me about Million Dollar Baby was that it was beautifully shot, making excellent use of light and shade, close and far perspectives, angle and slow-motion. Within these techniques, which are used for effect and not over-used to show off, the simple narrative was able to take shape, performed by actors who appreciated its depth and subtlety, so played their roles with reserved emotion and calm understatement that fit their characters perfectly. Lesser performers would’ve made a botch of the roles that Eastwood and Swank crafted to near-perfection
The movie concerns itself with boxing but is not a boxing movie, rather that’s just the vehicle for its main themes: hope, dreams, determination, success and then loss. Still, it would be facile and glib to ‘use’ boxing in this way and then just gloss over its intricacies… this is where Morgan Freeman’s earthy narration comes into play, telling us all there is to know about training boxers in that same assuring way he told us about Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. So we can chart Maggie’s progress without the characters having to pause and explain what’s going on, and Swank herself – playing the role with layers of nervousness, exuberance, doggedness and zeal – provides the perfect canvas for us to see these changes
The main narrative is simple so shouldn’t be spoiled, however other subplots are constantly at work throughout the movie: Eddie’s own career and his relationship with Frankie, Maggie’s poor background and her relationship with her abhorrent family, Frankie’s long-lost daughter and his taunting interplay with his local priest. None of these runs away with or smothers the movie, nor are they followed through to much conclusion, but they provide intriguing depth to the three main characters as we come to know them in the shadowy expanse of Frankie’s boxing gym. Million Dollar Baby shows you that great films do not need a convoluted storyline or a supercilious screenplay, just great actors and a great cinematographer.

“Rush Hour” Plot Summary
Two cops team up to get back a kidnapped daughter.
Worth every penny!
First, I am not a martial arts film fan. I am however someone who enjoys being entertained and this film does just that. Wrapped around a thin plot it is a buddy/buddy film that works. Just as Mel and Danny made the Lethal Weapon films work, Jackie and Chris fit together just as well. The clips they show you in the trailers are not the only good scenes in this movie, the films full of them. All in all, well worth the time and money.

Very Well Done Movie!!! With No Political Agenda…
We weren’t sure whether or not we would want to see this movie. Oliver Stone is someone who’s movies we don’t usually agree with. After reading many of the reviews on this site, we decided to give this movie a chance
It is a very impressive, well executed movie… with excellent acting, directing and editing!!! It is a movie that will remind you of that day, however, it is a movie about heroes, friendships and triumphs. Yes, there are points in the movie that you will tear up and even cry, yet there is also laughter at some points and there is a lot of positive throughout the movie even though it is was a time of crisis and horror surrounding the situation. The horror of that day does exist in the movie, however it isn’t overplayed or too dramatic to watch…. Also, that is not the main part of the movie. The movie is based on the lives to two of the trapped survivors as they tell/recall what happened to them on that day
The audience sat in awe watching the movie… nobody ever got up to leave their seats… and everyone was amazed at the end of how well the story was told. I’ve never seen the Theatre so crowded on a weeknight (almost at capacity)… and it was being shown on multiple screens at a big theater
I do recommend all American’s see this movie… as it pays tribute to the heroes and shows some of the good that came from the tragedy.

“The Weather Man” Movie Review
“The Weather Man” Plot Summary
A Chicago weather man, separated from his wife and children, debates whether professional and personal success are mutually exclusive. add synopsis
Brilliant outlook.
Up until seeing The Weather Man, I had maintained Nicolas Cage had only been in one decent film this entire decade and that was Adaptation. The Weather Man has proved me wrong, in the sense he’s actually been in two particularly good films this decade with The Weather Man really standing out. It’s always going to create speculative opinions when a film tries to tackle the issues surrounding mid-life crisis’ or a human-being in need as his life threatens to fall apart and the whole thing is played for laughs of some sort. Fortunately, The Weather Man finds its spot between success and failure in this retrospect, delivering a film that is engrossing; interesting; funny but never exploitative
I think part of the reason The Weather Man is such a good film is because it finds this balance, with the film-making aspect of it backing it up rather than becoming obviously apparent. Items such as Michael Caine’s character’s reaction to certain things more-so his dodgy accent aid in getting across a humorous moment or two and a lot of Nicolas Cage’s voiceovers complete with flashbacks are less so ‘laugh out loud’ funny and are more sombre due to their sad and somewhat pathetic nature. It also works in the sense we know exactly what happens next in his life and thus, if the entire film, including flashbacks, had been presented in a linear form the film would have been attempting to exploit a man’s life crisis by way of comedy
As for Nicolas Cage, he plays David Spitz who’s the weather man of the title but it could really be any individual in almost any job and that’s part of the brilliance of the film. David struggles in balancing his rocky relationship with his wife Noreen (Davis) as she begins a new one with someone else; his relationship with his daughter Shelley (de la Pena) as she struggles in a world obsessed with fashion, what’s ‘hot’ and beauty in general and he also tries to balance his son’s, named Mike (Hoult), misfortunes after he has a dangerous encounter with a paedophile. All the time this goes on, he tries to come across as a decent individual to his own father, Robert (Caine).
But the film isn’t a quick fire, multi-strand picture flipping from one story and situation to the next. The Weather Man takes time in its setting up of events and certain situations that develop; sometimes pausing to place them on a backburner to concentrate on another thing entirely. This can be a bullying problem that arises for Shelley; David’s new job opportunity that arises in another city or his gradual interest in archery. The Weather Man is shot in a dark and snowy location, using greys and other metallic colours perfectly to get across a feeling of feint despair; a feeling that any tilt either way could result in either full blown Technicolor or out and out black and white for a depressing effect
The film begins with a series of odd camera compositions, setting up the tone and the visualisation of the film perfectly. The traffic is strangely symmetrical; pictures on the sides of walls seems to make their own way backwards as certain actions are undertaken in an impressive example of focus pulling and when we see David standing in a room, the on television is at the side of the screen thus presenting David as an individual distancing himself from the active world or the activity that is clearly going on in his immediate vicinity. But from here, the film delves into what it’s like to be a father or an individual that is trying to balance too many things at once. As a presence, David’s father Robert is someone that shows up at the worst of times and has prior success already under his belt in a Pulitzer prize. His look on life and opinions of David’s own come across as calm and obvious, further embedding David with issues that are made to come across as quite easy to deal with
So the film is about a man trying to seek recognition from his father whilst attempting to be a good one all the same. The issues with Shelley in the sense she is a 12 year old girl that swears, smokes and wants to kill animals provide David with an overall goal in which he must achieve, at least for Shelley’s sake much-less his own and the sub-stories revolving around Mike’s issues are dealt with enough but never feel like they are dominating proceedings. Another piece of evidence of the film’s neutral tone see it set up its product placement of McDonalds before bashing the chain and fast-food in general as ‘non-nourishing’ before allowing its lead to recognise that it’s only ever fast-food people throw at him. He does this whilst sitting in a fast-food restaurant
As a stand alone film, The Weather Man suffices on multiple levels. It’s a comedy of sorts albeit thanks to a lot of Caine’s downbeat and lateral observations on life without ever feeling like an obvious comedy; it carries a certain degree of menace as Cage’s character gradually has things pile on top of him, rendering his position seemingly impossible to recover from and it allows each character and certain scenario to arrive, settle and then expand again if the film so wishes it to. I just wonder if Cage will indeed make a better film this decade or if director Verbinski will ever be remembered for this film amongst all his inglorious ‘Pirates’ exploits. If neither happen, then that would be a great shame.

“Lions for Lambs” Movie Review
“Lions for Lambs” Plot Summary
Injuries sustained by two Army ranger behind enemy lines in Afghanistan set off a sequence of events involving a congressman, a journalist and a professor.
Simple but strong
An excellent plot line, brilliantly directed, great cast, not one of Tom’s best performances, but non the less impeccable. The underlying critique of the severe levels of apathy we face in society nowadays is so subtle that it screams a wake up call. All Redford fans will surely be delighted as this is definitely one of his best pieces. I loved the way he approached the subject, which in it self is not an easy one to develop under the circumstances and what fascinates me is that the movie is so fluid, mind opening, non-invasive and easy to grasp that it almost leaves you with the impression that anyone could have done it, which of course is far from the truth. I think this should be a mandatory classroom video for both high school and college students alike, because everyone can benefit from the psychological momentum this movie captures and conveys so beautifully.
