    “Evolution” Movie Review

    “Evolution” Plot Summary

A firefighting cadet, two college professors, and a geeky-but-sexy government scientist work against an alien organism that has been rapidly evolving ever since its arrival on Earth inside a meteor. add synopsis

    great one

Excellent movie with lots of new ideas. Such fun to watch funny creatures and all the sticky liquid coming out from the aliens. The combinations of Mr Duchovny and the other are great but some extra do not perform very well such as the scene at with the flying creatures

The last part where the movie almost end, looks so fake on the big huge aliens and that make this story weakness at that part. Other than that, all have been done very well.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” Movie Review

    “Sweeney Todd” Plot Summary

The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.

    Got me onside, surprisingly good

I am generally not a fan of musicals. I don’t like the artifice of singing dialogue moments. I have no problem with singing in a movie but this grates on me. Take Dreamgirls for instance. For the most part i was fine with it, good songs, performed as performances with a narrative structure surrounding them. However once of twice it had songs in place of dialogue where characters were discussing things amongst themselves or some such thing and i just got annoyed. And yes i dislike all the classics like West Side Story for this very reason

For about the first 20-30 minutes of Sweeney Todd I was having the same problem. This makes no bones about it being a musical. It’s not Rex Harrison speak-sing, it’s not staged songs in the middle of clumps of dialogue, it’s pretty much all singing. Everything. Every sentiment, every emotion, every plan, every aside. Yet after about 20 minutes or so i got used to it and went with it and then just appreciated the wonderful dark humour and sheer entertainment quality of it

Johnny Depp is great in the lead but he is complimented across the entire cast with Alan Rickman on fabulously villainous mode; Timothy Spall wonderfully revolting an Beadle Bamford – Rickman’s henchman; and Helena Bonham Carter hilariously off-centre with all the best lines. It also has a star making turn from a brilliant child actor, Edward Sanders. Much better than the now ubiquitous Freddie Highmore (who got his big break with Depp in Finding Neverland before rejoining him (with Burton) in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) he seems destined to have a great career potentially

The film’s greatest achievement however is how Burton has translated it to screen. This is a purely film musical. It never feels stagey. Unlike recent films like The Producers, Dreamgirls, Chicago which felt largely like they’d stuck a camera in a theatre and just filmed the show here Burton is brave enough to create a cinematic musical using all the tricks of his craft. That is never feels like it belongs anywhere but on a cinema screen is a huge testament to Burton’s skill in the translation and I hope the Academy is intelligent enough to recognise this come the Oscars next year

The dark humour is great, the look is stunning, Depp is gloriously unhinged while remaining believable. Even if, like me, you don’t generally like this type of musical i think you’ll get swept up in Sweeney Todd and enjoy it. Bravo Mr Burton.

“Born on the Fourth of July” Movie Review

“Born on the Fourth of July” Plot Summary

The biography of Ron Kovic. Paralyzed in the Vietnam war, he becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.

    A forgotten masterpiece!

This has to be one of the the best war films I have ever seen. Where ‘Saving Private Ryan’ fell into a whirlpool of schmaltz or where ‘The Deer Hunter’ caught ‘bad ending’ syndrome, ‘Born’ stood out. It is also the best Oliver Stone film I have ever seen. Where ‘Platoon’ looked cheap and lacked characterisation, where ‘JFK’ felt smothered in special guest cameos, where ‘Natural Born Killers’ looked silly and cartoonish and well, where ‘Scarface’ was just plain shameful, ‘Born On the Fourth of July’ stands out above all of these titles. It confronts you with the true, unrelenting horrors of the Vietnam war with the use of disturbing flashback sequences, kinetically energetic gun battles and slow-motion violence

This film also proved that Cruise was an artistically satisfying actor as well as a commercial one (think ‘Top Gun’). I think we can all agree that this was definitely his tour de force (and, if you’re a ‘Usual Suspects’ fan, you can actually spot Stephen ‘McManus’ Baldwin in the scene where Ronnie and his friends are discussing their futures in a cafe). Sorry if I went a little off the topic at hand there, but I thought some of you might find that interesting. Anyway, if I had to summarise ‘Born On the Fourth of July’ in a few words I’d say something along the lines of really, really, really good or more poetically, moving and unforgettable.

“My One and Only” Movie Review

“My One and Only” Plot Summary

An unusual road trip movie about a mother driving her two sons from New York to Pittsburgh to St. Louis and eventually Hollywood in her quest to find a man to take care of them all.

    Wonderful Road Picture

This is truly an engaging, endearing and very funny look into relationships; both romantic and filial, typical of the 1950’s

One member here criticized the movie as hetero-phobic; I wouldn’t go that far, but men in the 1950’s were certainly not metrosexuals! And the classy blond belle which Ms. Zellweger plays with pitch perfect demeanor is just the type of woman that would attract unattractive male attention. The brutes she meets give the film its energy and give her a journey worth making for the audience. And there are two supporting male characters who are good hearted in the film, so the criticism simply doesn’t hold up. Zellweger has never been better! What we have here is a funny and poignant story about the survival of a woman who leaves her husband in the world of the 1950’s. As good as Ms. Zellweger is, the movie is stolen by the two very gifted young actors who portray her sons; Logan Lerman and Mark Rendall. The two of them couldn’t be more different, but they are brothers and understand each other and understand their mother. Lerman plays the more grounded of the two and creates a very real and sympathetic portrait. Rendall plays the flighty older brother; obviously gay and has a good deal of the ‘zinger’ lines which he delivers perfectly. After 20 minutes, you want to be with this family for the rest of the film

This is the kind movie that depends on writing and Charlie Peters has given us a convincing and at times, very witty screenplay. You feel and understand every character. The movie is directed with an understated classiness by Loncraine. It moves from adventure to adventure fluidly with assurance and style. And the production design has perfectly captured the era

Don’t miss this one! Frankly, one of the best films of 2009.

“The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans” Movie Review

“The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans” Plot Summary

Terence McDonagh is a drug- and gambling-addled detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. add synopsis

    Wonderful movie

I finally got to see this a few days ago after waiting quite a while. Being a big fan of Nic Cage, and being frustrated by his recent work, I pretty much had to make the 40 minute drive to see his first movie in a few years that had been getting mostly positive reviews

It was absolutely worth it. Port of Call is hilarious from start to finish, there was never a dull moment. Nic Cage is incredibly entertaining as the drug-addled ‘bad’ lieutenant Terence McDonagh. It was a ton of fun watching him go completely crazy on-screen, wondering what he would do next. Eva Mendes puts in a great performance as Cage’s prostitute girlfriend (again?). Val Kilmer is good too but unfortunately he’s only in a few scenes. I was a little worried after seeing Xzibit in the cast list but he plays his role well

One important thing to remember about this film is that it is absolutely not intended to be taken seriously. Unlike Ferrara’s film, which was extremely gritty and dead-serious, Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant is a very black comedy. To go into this film expecting a cop drama with a dramatic performance by Cage is a recipe for disaster

Which reminds me, don’t go into this expecting anything that resembles Ferrara’s 1992 ‘Bad Lieutenant’. The two have nothing in common other than the premise of a drug-addicted corrupt cop. ‘Port of Call’ actually wasn’t intended to be a remake, adding ‘Bad Lieutenant’ to the title was a commercial decision (why, I don’t know, Bad Lieutenant is relatively obscure).

If you’re lucky enough to have a theater nearby playing this, go see it right now. ‘Port of Call’ is a massive comeback for Nic Cage and I seriously believe he deserves to at least be nominated for an Academy Award

Just leave your 4th year film student friend home.
