“A Beautiful Mind” Plot Summary
After a brilliant but asocial mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn to the nightmarish.
Beautifully done
Now this is the Russell Crowe I know and love. The Insider, L.A. Confidential… and now chalk up another calculating masterful performance
A Beautiful Mind tells the autobiographical story of John Forbes Nash Jr. a distinguished professor from Princeton who went on to make some great theories and win the nobel prize. The centerpiece of the story is the fact that John Nash suffers from schizophrenia a debilitating condition for most people which leaves them helpless. Thus it is amazing that Nash has been able to achieve what he has. For the most part of the story his hallucinations turn out to institutionalize him at one point, when he thinks the Russians are trying to secretly send him coded messages through news publications
First off the main performance by Crowe as Nash is amazing. This is the performance that I know he is capable of, complicated, passionate and serious, none of this gutteral one line BS that he uttered in Gladiator. Here we have a marvelous performance that Crowe spins as we watch Nash fall into despair, every twitch, eyes darting, and Nash’s helplessness this is not an easy task for any actor. Nash is a recluse, almost an autistic savant, we see how he trys out his theories by writing on glass windows and stuffing himself in a corner of the library. He is seriously gifted, but a social misfit. Early on we hear how Nash describes how a grade school teacher mentioned that he was born with 2 heapings of brain but only 1/2 of heart
Ron Howard’s direction is great in exposing Nash’s life. Probably the best scenes involve the use of how Nash comes up with his theories such as why the dynamics of a colleagues tie is so bad, or how a plan to get all of his college buddies laid leads to a theory that makes him famous
Also what else can I say about Jeniffer Connely who plays his wife in the film. She is passionate and gives a full perfect 10 performance as well as the wife who is trying to survive with a husband she can’t help. But the greatest achievement of this film is how it portrays mental illness from the perspective of the person suffering it
Most films that deal with someone with a mental condition always place the focus on the people who are outside the person suffering, watching from a distance, trying to understand. Here we have a film that literaly puts us in the mind of the sufferer, as to what it is to live with such a debilitating illness. We get Nash’s sense of accomplishment, but also his demons and paranoia. And probably the most important thing is that we understand that mental illness isn’t something that gets cured, the people have to live with it, and it never goes away
Also Crowe and Connely age in this film wonderfuly, so many films try to age actors/actresses in makeup and it doesn’t work, but here it is done flawlessly..Minor faults in the film deal with that some of the supporting characters are reduced to props and people we don’t know, and at one point the film bogs slightly when Nash is trying to return to Princeton to study. But these points are minor since the performances of the main characters are so well done, and the stories focus is on them to begin with
Crowe will probably get the best actor for this. Great film
Rating 8 out of 10.

“The Pelican Brief” Plot Summary
A law student uncovers a conspiracy, putting herself and others in danger. add synopsis
Most enjoyable thriller
Another complex legal thriller from author John Grisham (‘The Firm’) is brought professionally to the screen by director Alan J. Pakula (‘Presumed Innocent’).As in the Sydney Pollack film ‘The Firm’, ‘The Pelican Brief’ requires concentration and attention to detail as it relates the story of New Orleans law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts), whose theoretic paper, which outlines what she believes to be the reasons behind the brutal assassinations of two Supreme Court judges, lands her in hot water when it passes into the wrong hands. Her brief, it would seem, is much too close to the truth for comfort. So begins a frenetic chase as Darby runs for her life whilst she searches for someone in whom to place her trust. She finds that confidant in Washington Herald reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington), whose determined yet ethical pursuit of the truth is both admirable and effective
Grisham’s involved novel (which probably loses much specific detail in crossing to the big screen) gives the movie a plot that is fascinating enough to carry proceedings alone, however Pakula’s effective direction and his choice of two popular stars does no harm to the cause. Both Roberts and Washington are in good form and give strong performances, as do the impressive supporting cast
A most enjoyable, and occasionally tense, thriller whose beginning and finale are both far outdone by the fast middle

This was amazing!
I went into this movie just wanting to watch Gerard because I love him as an actor. When I got in there, I realized that this was not going to be just any movie. This movie was kick ass and I am so glad that I went to see it. I would pay 10 times to go watch this movie in theaters. He really took it over the edge, and the quote that my friends and I are saying since then is ‘It’s going to be biblical’ They really make each scene one for the books with creative ideas and thrilling scenes that keep you wondering what will be in store. It is one of the few movies that my heart was racing and my mind was wondering what would happen next. I love it and cannot wait to see it again.

“The Matrix” Plot Summary
A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against the controllers of it.
The Perfect Symbiosis of Action and Philosophy
What is real? How do you define real? This question has been explored for its significance in metaphysics in other movies as well. The Thirteenth Floor is one of them and the other is Dark City. I mention these because they were released more or less around the same time as this movie was released. But these two movies do not enjoy the position and the popularity of this movie – The Matrix, why? Look at the box office success of the Matrix. Look at the popularity of this movie. Advertisements have been created based on the themes of this movie. Most people seem to have heard of the movie if not seen it. The Matrix enjoys a prominent position in the top 50 on the IMDb. Even a list of 100 best movies of all times as compiled by a documentary on the Discovery Channel mentioned this movie as among the top 100. The key to the enormous success of the Matrix is the symbiotic combination of two opposing elements. The first one being metaphysics or philosophy and the second element being intense amount of action. The Dark City is limited in its action and stresses more on the metaphysics aspect and so does the Thirteenth floor. When you see The Matrix, you see that there is far more metaphysics and philosophy in this movie when compared to the other two. And when you see the action sequences of the movie, the two movies fade into oblivion. There is so much for the intellectual to busy himself with in this movie. There is a reference to so many mythological places and figures. The character Neo is an anagram of One signifying the One Absolute many cultures believe in and then there is Trinity, an obvious reference to the Holy Trinity. The names of the ships, the numbers on the door, the name of the book Neo takes his CD out from all have a significance, a clue, if that is what one wants to call it. This movie gives enough to the intellectual to study and talk about. And yet the movie does not fail to capture the attention of the average movie goer. The average movie goer does not want to search for hidden symbols, he does not want to discuss the movie for hours and hours. He wants some action and some fun. The movie gives that as well. The movie has a lot of guns, a lot of chases and a lot of fighting. The average movie goer can appreciate the main aspect of this movie without bothering about all the hidden symbols which the intellectual chooses to see in the movie. Yet, he apparently does not deny himself the spirit of the movie and enjoys it. And I believe this is what has made the movie successful – the reconciliation between action and thrill and metaphysics and philosophy. This movie deserves all the praise and success that it has got. My personal all-time favorite. I never get tired of talking about it till date and love to see it with my friends if I get the chance.

“The Hurt Locker” Movie Review
“The Hurt Locker” Plot Summary
Iraq. Forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, an elite Army bomb squad unit must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb.
One of the best war films of the past 25 years…
Gut-wrenching, pulse-pounding, out of this world tension, just mere exterior descriptions of what Kathryn Bigelow’s new film, The Hurt Locker is. Written by Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker overflows with intensity, passion, and reverence. In the wake of 9/11, filmmakers have struggled to create a piece that is socially accepted and respected. Only two films have succeeded in this task over the past eight years; Paul Greengrass’ beautiful United 93, depicting an open interpretation of the final moments of the doomed plane and now, Bigelow’s film will join the short, elite list
This character-driven tale tells the stories of three army soldiers who are a part of the most dangerous of jobs to offer in the military, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), in plainer terms, they disarm bombs. Staff Sergeant William James played ferociously by Jeremy Renner heads up this story as a soldier facing death every moment of the day. With his wife and child at home and often displaying unorthodox behavior, James seems fit for a war soldier. Sergeant JT Sanborn, played by Anthony Mackie is a by-the-book man, living his days at war while incurring losses along the way. Specialist Owen Eldridge played by Brian Geraghty is young, bewildered, and thrust into a situation unknowing of the impact it would have. What these three men bring to their respective roles educates the viewer of the horrors of war. Forget what you think you know on CNN and your local news, Bigelow is running the show with Boal out on assignment and Renner, Mackie, and Geraghty as our anchors. The crews of the picture are the tools in building this powerful vessel. Cinematographer Barry Ackroyd uses his four camera use to keep us feeling like a first-person account of the events of the film. The mesh of Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders score and the sound effects team makes for a more suspenseful experience. Filming in Jordan was the choice of Bigelow to give it a more authentic feel. ‘If you’re going to make a film about the Middle East, make it in the Middle East.’ Bigelow said to me after the film. It paid off big time because I always felt like I was there in the battle zone, enduring pain, torment, and dehydration. With a NY & LA release set for Friday, June 26th, The Hurt Locker’s deserves all the praise its been receiving and should be experienced by any movie lover. The Oscar Prospects might look a little grim based on the summer release but with no real first-half of 2009 contenders, Bigelow and her film have strong chances of taking a spot amongst the final five come end of the year. Renner and Mackie will also be strong contenders in their respective categories. The strongest possibility for an Oscar has to be for writer Mark Boal. The research he did for the film alone will keep Boal in the minds of voters. The Hurt Locker’s striking cinematography, crisp editing that keeps it at a heart palpating pace, strong performances, directing, and writing is enough to take this film in consideration for your viewing. Brilliant, simply brilliant.****/****

“Man on Fire” Plot Summary
In Mexico City, a former assassin swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.
Amazing, absolutely AMAZING
This movie blew me away; however not the first time I saw it, I had to watch it twice to truly appreciate the message and the power of this film. Maybe I wasn’t fully paying attention or maybe I was too young at the time but I am so glad that I watched it again
If ever there was perfect casting for a motion picture then this would be it! Denzel Washington is unbelievably believable, (then again when is he not believable) and even though Christopher Walken’s part is small in this you don’t forget him as he helps to develop the story and make Washington’s character even more electrifying. Also the supporting cast is more than solid with Marc Anthony and Radha Mitchell putting in very strong performances, with Mickey Rourke also worth a mention. However, this is all eclipsed by the youngest member of the cast, Dakota Fanning, who is indescribable as Pita. The chemistry between Washington ans Fanning shines off the screen and you laugh when they laugh, and cry when they cry
The direction is expertly done, but with such films as ‘Enemy of the State’ and ‘Crimson Tide’ perfection is what should be expected from a director like Tony Scott. There are scenes around 2-5 mins long with no dialogue and just Denzel Washington on screen that are captivating; a testament to the skills of Scott and Washington, which come together with brilliant results
It might not be everyone’s cup of tea with vivid violence and quite long at 146 mins, but in my opinion it has to have these things to make it the masterpiece that it is. If you like a film that really paints the picture before ripping it up in your face with twists and turns that will leave you with your jaw on the floor then this is the film for you. This film has so much to it that if I said anymore I would probably end up spoiling parts of it for you
This is one of the few films that has brought a tear to my eye and that was because you care so much for the characters. I think this film has been highly underrated but hopefully it will get recognised for its heart and for the excellence that oozes from the screen on every level.

Post-apocalyptic America. What begins as a con game becomes one man’s quest to rebuild civilization by resuming postal service. add synopsis
A Movie About Hope
Possible Spoiler, If You Know Nothing About The Movie (8 Stars)This movie like many movies that get bad reviews is longer than most. It’s length may not let most viewers eat, chew gum, and talk at the same time. I liked it the first time I viewed it. It shows that desperate times require strength, courage, and hope. We may some day have a time when we are in dire straits. The World Trade Center September 11, comes to mind
When times are the toughest, someone has to step up to the plate and show courage. This man, the postman gives hope to those who had given up on life. It may be soapy, but it makes me feel good when it’s over. That is part of what watching movies is all about
Other movies that deal with post war situations, the Mad Max movies for the action, Blade Runner for it’s sci-fi, and Dr. Strangelove is my favorite classic movie with both humor and realism all tied up in a perfect package.

“Bringing Out the Dead” Plot Summary
Frank Pierce is a paramedic working Gotham’s Hell’s Kitchen. He’s become burned out and haunted by visions of the people he’s tried to save. add synopsis
Good once it finds its rhythm
After reading the novel by Joe Connelly this movie is based on(by the way, the title is a reference to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL), it seemed a perfect fit for director Martin Scorsese, writer Paul Schraeder, and star Nicolas Cage. After all, this is the mean streets of New York, this is about trying to find salvation and redemption in the pits of despair, and it features a character on the edge. But when things start out, I was disappointed. It seems like all three of them, Scorsese, Schraeder, and Cage, were straining to get the effect of the novel, and it felt disjointed. The narration by Cage seems to be covering up for what’s not being shown, which always means trouble
In lesser hands, this might have been a problem. However, Scorsese has the craft to match his passion, and he soon finds the rhythm. The narration is used less and less as the movie goes on, and Cage is gradually able to show his grief, rather than just talk about it. We still don’t feel the impact of the story as much as we do in the novel, but we do feel something, thanks to Cage and Patricia Arquette(as the daughter of a patient he saves). Once it gets going, the black humor, courtesy of Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore as fellow paramedics and Scorsese and Queen Latifah as dispatchers, helps fuel the picture as well. This isn’t quite as good as Scorsese’s other New York stories, but it is a worthy addition to his canon.

“The Maiden Heist” Plot Summary
A comedy centered on three museum security guards who devise a plan to steal back the artworks to which they have become attached after they are transferred to another museum. add synopsis
An unusual comedy platter
Art shouldn’t just be for highbrow types. A painting can have special meaning. Even for an ordinary blue-collar Joe. At least that’s the message from director Pete Hewitt. This is knockabout comedy that might make Woody Allen fans affectionately recall Small Time Crooks, even though this film is very different to Allen’s caper and wears its point on its sleeve. ‘Great art is not solely the domain of the connoisseur,’ says Hewitt. ‘Anyone can be emotionally transported by a few paint smudges on a canvas.’ Hewitt (Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, Thunderpants) has here come up with a grand robbery that is for love rather than money. Three misfit security guards at the museum embark on a dangerous journey to save the things they hold dear
Decorated with a galaxy of stars, the Maiden Heist has been avidly awaited by fans worrying if it will see the light of day. In December 2008, the distribution arm of the Yari Film Group responsible filed for bankruptcy. Yari’s Emily Lambert e-mailed the Globe saying, ‘I don’t anticipate any screenings of The Maiden Heist in the near future,’ and producer Rob Paris went scrambling to find a new distributor. With a comparatively modest budget of $20 million, Paris feels he has got great value. ‘Our movie needed the scope the size of the Worcester Art Museum,’ he says. ‘It gave the film a look, a richness, that we otherwise wouldn’t have gotten.’ The WAM is used to establish the interior of the fictional Boston Art Museum (BAM) in which our story takes place. Scriptwriter Michael LeSieur had a top comedy actor in his previous hit (You, Me & Dupree) in the form of Owen Wilson. In The Maiden Heist, the chameleon-like talents of William H Macy first spring to mind as being suited to comedy, due to his Fargo fame, when he played the police story with subtle humour. Christopher Walken and Morgan Freeman are better known for their serious roles, but we should remember that Walken has also starred in comedy (Wedding Crashers, Hairspray), even if it is to play the straight man against the likes of Owen Wilson. Freeman has had brushes with his funny side in Bruce Almighty. Heading up the supporting cast is Marcia Gay Harden, who won an Oscar playing an artist (Lee Krasner) in the art biopic, Pollock. But it is probably fair to say that all these great stars are known primarily for their power to bring great depth to serious dramatic roles. There were moments in The Maiden Heist where I felt they were bumbling through the comedy rather than playing bumbling heisters. I found this a bit worrying as I have deep respect for their work. But maybe other viewers could find the apparent mismatch of seemingly inappropriate casting oddly rewarding
The big star of The Maiden Heist though is of course the central painting. Roger (Christopher Walken) stares at ‘The Lonely Maiden’ for years. First as a way to pass time, but now as a way to address or replace what is lacking in his life. The painting has become his passion. His obsession. Supplanting the passion he once felt for his wife. This particular artwork in the film was especially created by painter Jeremy Lipking. ‘When I first met with the director he opened up the Gabriel Weisberg book Beyond Impressionism: the Naturalist Impulse, (which is probably the most worn out book on my shelf) and said, ‘We need something like this.’ A painting in the manner of Naturalist painters George Clausen, Emile Friant and Jules Bastien Lepage. I had to finish the painting in 7 days. It normally would have taken me a month or longer to do something this size. I got artist model Toni Czechorosky help me out with the period costume.’ Macy’s character, on the other hand, is obsessed with a statue. Creating it involved photographing a naked Macy from a three-hundred and sixty degree perspective. (The photographs went to a sculptor in Los Angeles, who brought in another model and photographed him in the same fashion before creating a mould for the statue.)The Maiden Heist quickly sold out at its opening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It’s a light-hearted caper that makes for undemanding viewing. I don’t see audiences flocking to galleries as a result, but who knows? While Roger might find his wife has been his lonely maiden all along, many viewers may more identify with the bit where he flits to Florida with the missis. Missing out on the art appreciation stuff seems a convenient bypass. If this is the case, the film is somewhat hypocritical in its claim about art and the general masses. It uses the notion to entertain without encouraging us to seriously engage. LeSieur, who wrote the script as a film school thesis project, may well be an art enthusiast. But the idea that ordinary people don’t love art is a bit worrying to those of us that do. Shortly after I visited (during extensive bar-hopping) the beautiful Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, it was victimised by amateur thieves who posed as security guards. If you see me exit the Tate Modern with a naked William H Macy under my arm, please shoot me. Or take him back he is a high-value asset of the acting profession and should not be high-jacked. ‘But it was a maiden heist, officer. . .’

A woman (Madeleine Stowe) who has just discovered she is the daughter of a murdered Mafia chieftain (Anthony Quinn) seeks revenge, with the aide of her Father’s faithful bodyguard (Sylvester Stallone). add synopsis
Good clean fun!
I bought this movie for two reasons, first, I wanted to get something my wife and I could watch together and Wal-Mart was selling it for $5.50, and secondly, it was filmed partly in the city where I work, and I saw Stallone standing between two sound trucks, looking just like Sylvester Stallone as I was leaving my office one night. I had always thought I should have a look at the movie.
I expected a grim-mouthed actioner, but having seen some of Stallone’s other work I should have known better. The movie is played with a lot of good humour, and fine interplay between Stallone and Stowe. There were a couple of places where I actually laughed out loud, and it’s hard to make me laugh.
If you want a movie you can watch on a quiet night with your teen-aged kids and your wife, this’ll do fine.
