“Conan the Destroyer” Movie Review

“Conan” Plot Summary

Conan leads a ragtag group of adventurers on a quest for a princess. add synopsis

This was great

I don’t know why it got such a low rating, I really enjoyed Conan the Destroyer. I wasn’t as good as the first one, but it was a very good sequel, and definitely worth watching. Good acting, good music, the special effects could have been better, but they were still good. WATCH THIS! Arnold did a really good job with this movie. I think one of the reasons people thought it wasn’t good was because it was either confusing or boring. It wasn’t boring at all. And it was a little confusing because it is a fantasy adventure movie! Look at Lord of the Rings, that is fantasy, only everybody loves that! What the….

“Seven Years in Tibet” Movie Review

“Seven Years in Tibet” Plot Summary

True story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China’s takeover of Tibet.

One Of The Most Unique Adventures Of The Twentieth Century

Tibet has certainly fascinated people all over the world. The hidden land in the most forbidding place on the planet not at either pole. In its day Lost Horrizon made quite a bit of money for its author James Hilton. But the real story of Heinrich Harrer is better than anything a fictional author could have thought up

Brad Pitt is Harrer in Seven Years In Tibet and this has become my favorite film of his. Heinrich Harrer, a world famous mountain climber and Austrian national hero goes on an expedition in 1939 to conquer an unclimbed peak in the Himalayas. While he’s doing his mountain climbing Germany of which Austria is now part of marches into Poland and World War II begins. Harrer and his party are interred as enemy aliens

In 1942 Harrer escaped and he and a friend played by David Thewlis make their way into Tibet. The rest of the film is the seven years he spent there, centered around the unique friendship he formed with the child ruler of Tibet, the Dalai Lama. This in fact is the same Dalai Lama who today is possibly the world’s greatest and non-aligned apostle of the gospel of peace

Brad Pitt is never better in the film than he is with the three child actors who play the Dalai Lama at various stages of his life. The physical hardship that he and Thewlis endure just getting into Tibet is adventure enough. But the spiritual journey he undergoes in his time there makes this one of the most unique adventure stories of the last century

One thing I liked about Seven Years in Tibet is that no effort was made to cover up Harrer’s Nazi background. In an alternate universe one can speculate on what might have happened to him had he actually had to serve in the army in World War II. His internment saved him from possibly being involved any number of atrocities. God, fate, some kind of higher power saved him for something wonderful. The cinematography is breathtaking, this film had an incredible number of locations. Note that it was shot in British Columbia, in Argentina with the Andes serving as the Himalayas, Austria and even some establishing footage was shot in Tibet itself on the sly

Tibet’s status is unique unto the world. It has been part of China since the Ming dynasty. It’s referred to properly as the autonomous region of Tibet. China has given it autonomy in varying degrees over the past several centuries, it’s never been truly independent. The Communist regime back in the days of Mao Tse-tung brutally asserted it’s sovereignty a few times, most notably in late fifties when the Dalai Lama was forced to flee Tibet and live in Northern India where he resides to this day. That is when he’s not traveling the world as it’s foremost advocate of non-violence

It is sad that this film did not get more box office than it did. Brad Pitt, David Thewlis, director Jean Jacques Arnaud are all persona non grata in the People’s Republic of China for making this film. Quite a market indeed to be shut out of for a stand for humanity

It’s to be hoped that one day the Tibetans will be free. Until then they have their unique brand of Buddhism to sustain them and this wonderful film to tell their story.

    “Pearl Harbor” Movie Review

    “Pearl Harbor” Plot Summary

Pearl Harbor follows the story of two best friends, Rafe and Danny, and their love lives as they go off to join the war.

Great Cast! Great Characters! Great Effects! Good Acting.

We really enjoyed this movie. With Parents who survived WW2 and lived through many things during the war, many of us have much to appreciate

Pearl Harbor has a Great Cast- Great Characters- Great Effects and some very good acting. Yes, this is a real Michael Bay film. Yes, we waited a few weeks to see it because of some of the reviews and comments but it was very worth seeing. The first hour was necessary contrary to some whiners. This is not a documentary. They had to give us people to understand, know something about and feel what makes them up. Very good acting by all. Great acting by Ben, Josh, Kate and Cuba to name a few. All true Stars. No Academy award performances but close

Kate Beckensdale should land more movies after this excellent role. Not just be cause she is incredibly beautiful but because she can act too

The movie was long but so was the war with Japan. The story keeps you hooked right up to the end. Rooting for everyone. Would not hesitate to see it again or buy the DVD!

    “TMNT” Movie Review

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV” Plot Summary

The continued adventures of the four adolescent mutated turtles gifted in the art of the ninja, as they attempt to stop a mysterious evil that threatens to end the world.

An excellent and enjoyable treat for all Turtles fans!

I saw this last night at a preview in my local Odeon. I am a big fan of the Turtles and have been since my childhood. I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect from this movie but I was very impressed

The characters have all had a terrific makeover which is displayed with some of the best on screen animation that I have seen in a long time. The film itself is a bit vivid but all the same very enjoyable

All the chosen voice overs and presentations for each character seem very well suited, although my only criticism is against April O Neils character. She has gone from a geeky news reporter to tough as nails ninja it would appear, but we are not told exactly how far into the future this movie is from the Turtles timescale so I accept that the scriptwriters have progressed things and the characters have moved forward.**Spoiler Alert** One thing in particular is Leonardo , he looks very, very well done indeed. One scene in particular is the rooftop fight scene between him and Raphael which looks visually stunning and is way above anything I have seen in the animation world

The fight scenes/violence are a lot tougher than what you would expect from a Turtles feature. Some hard hitting ‘ninja’ violence is displayed throughout the movie and combined with the scary monsters is well worth it’s PG certificate. All in good taste though

Overall a very enjoyable and visual treat for the kids and grown ups which does justice for the whole TMNT history.

    “Deep Blue Sea” Plot Summary

Searching for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the bait as a trio of intelligent sharks fight back. add synopsis

    A survivalist’s dream!

A team of doctors, scientists and other professionals are sent to a remote research facility to study sharks in the hopes of finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. But the Bio-engineered sharks soon use their newly acquired intelligence to try and outsmart their human counterparts. One by one the team, a cast that includes Michael Rapaport, LL Cool J, Samuel L Jackson, Saffron Burrows amongst others, begin to be eliminated one by one as a struggle for survival begins when the sharks sabotage the facility by causing it to deliberately flood so that they (the sharks) can escape into the open sea. I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense and thriller aspects of the film, it wasn’t too gory (compared to some other films) but the script as well as certain situations were very annoying and not to mention predictable.

    “Bulletproof Monk” Plot Summary

Based on the very underground comic book, a Tibetan monk becomes a mentor to a young street kid whom he can teach to protect a scroll. add synopsis

    A good film

It wont change the world but I feel that watching this movie was not a waste of my time. It’s entertaining and in some places rather funny. So what if Sean William Scott isn’t the greatest actor ever he’s more than suitable for the of kar a petty thief who runs into the ‘bullet proof’ monk played as always with charm buy Chow Yun Fat (or Yun Fat Chow whatever u wont to say). There are only two real criticisms I have about this film the first is that I felt that the Kar/Monk relationship could have been built upon a bit more, when Kar says (just after monk has been kidnapped) Monk is the only family I’ve got I though but u only new him a few days, if they were supposed to had trained even for a few weeks I could had believed there bond a bit better. The second is that the villain was rather weak. His grandchild would have made a better on her own that bye taking orders from an old megalomaniac. All in all put fun doesn’t bring anything new but it doesn’t try to 7/10.

    “Conan the Barbarian” Plot Summary

The epic tale of child sold into slavery who grows into a man who seeks revenge against the warlord who massacred his tribe.

    Classic!

Conan the Barbarian is one of those films that just shouldn’t work on paper, but somehow ends up not only working, but becoming a classic. Everything is right here thanks to Milius unashamed bigger-than-life-direction. He takes him serious and dares to go far enough with the grandness, something few directors would dare do today for fear of being labeled pretentious

Combine this with probably the best film score EVER written, and you have movie magic. Basil Poledouris score is such a classic that every other composer has ripped it off a thousand times, and rightly so. It’s the granddaddy of Wagnerian tour-de-force scoring.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” Movie Review

“The Fellowship of the Ring” Plot Summary

In a small village in the Shire a young Hobbit named Frodo has been entrusted with an ancient Ring. Now he must embark on an Epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it.

    A Masterpiece

I’ve never been a fan of the sword and sorcery genre . I’m surprised film companies decide to make rubbish like THE BEASTMASTER, HAWK THE SLAYER and RED SONJA but I am aware of the popularity of JRR Tolkien’s massive novel LORD OF THE RINGS and of it’s popularity , I remember in a survey carried out by a very well known British fantasy/SF magazine in 1987 Tolkien’s book was voted the greatest fantasy novel of all time ( THE STAND by Stephen King was a long way second ) , but it’s a novel that has always struck me as being read by anoraks who – like fans of STAR TREK and STAR WARS – insist on reading subtexts that are just not there . When the THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS shot to number one in the IMDb top 250 films I put the popularity down to obsessed anorakish fans who were going to vote the film a classic no matter what . Stranger still I found groups as diverse as neo Nazis to gays to enviromentalists proclaiming ‘ This is our film ‘ so when I finally sat down to watch TFOTR I was expecting only some average entertainment for a non sad person with no political axe to grind . After seeing the film I had to admit THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING is a masterpiece .Much of the credit must go to the producers . I ‘ve no idea of the politics about bringing the story to the silver screen but I can imagine the Hollywood bigwigs sitting around the commitee table saying ‘ Give us Tom , give us Nicole , get Harrison , get Leonardo . No limeys . Limeys are slimy . No limey accents . We’re Americans , this is our baby ‘ to which the producers gave a firm and resounding ‘ No ‘ . Good for them because the Hollywood treatment would have ruined this film. The cast comprised of well known – but not megastar – actors and unknowns are uniformally excellent even the normally hammy Lee and Rhys Davis and the bland Tyler are good . Also great to see so many Brits playing good guys and having the American actors adopting non specific British accents .The cast do a good jobThe other production values are outstanding . Pride of place goes to Andrew Lesnie’s cinematography where the camera sweeps down from the sky into the Orcs underground lair and the camera also shows off the stunning New Zealand landscapes . I’d always believed Scotland had the greatest scenery on Earth but I’m willing to change my mind . The FX are good throughout though perhaps the matte backgrounds and CGI are less impressive in places but they’re still a lot better than we’ve been used to recently . The Orc make up is wonderful and helps them become classic cinema monsters . The only bad point about the Orcs is – Like the stormtroopers in STAR WARS – they’re too easy to kill .There are some minor flaws to THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS but this is probably down to Tolkien’s source novel rather than the film makers . A couple of times the heroes seem set to suffer a resounding defeat when something not obvious at first like flammable villains or a giant eagle saves the day . I guess this is cancelled out by the dangers and adversaries also appearing from nowhere and there’s little female perspective in the story for the women in the audience to relate to but come on girls you’ve got Viggo Mortensen and Sean Bean acting all hunky and macho so you can’t complain

I see the IMDb reviewers have started a backlash against FOTR like they did with TITANIC and GLADIATOR . They’re right about the gawd awful rubbish that is TITANIC but they’re wrong about GLADIATOR which is a very good film and even further wrong about THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING which is a cinematic masterpiece. Ignore their criticisms . Any film that is praised by people as diverse as fans of the book , people who have never read the book , enviromentalists and cynics like myself is worth your time watching . I’m really looking forward to THE TWO TOWERS
