“The Jungle Book” Movie Review

“The Jungle Book” Plot Summary

Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear have a difficult time trying to convince a boy to leave the jungle for human civilization.

One of Disney’s Best

‘The Jungle Book’ is definitely a classic. This was the last one to be produced under Walt Disney himself, and it kept the animation department alive after him. If you have noticed a certain ‘formula’ to modern Disney animated features, you’ll see that ‘The Jungle Book’ does not quite fit that formula. It’s something I appreciate about old Disney pictures, especially this one.

“From Hell” Movie Review

“From Hell” Plot Summary

In Victorian Era London, a troubled clairvoyant police detective investigates the murders by Jack The Ripper. add synopsis

Surprisingly decent Jack the Ripper themed horror flick

Many interpretations of Jack the Ripper’s allegory have been delineated throughout the horror genre’s past era, and while ‘From Hell’ may not be the best, it portrays the historical events in a satisfactory manner. This particularly accurate account of the London serial killer shifts it’s focus between different sets of people residing in the Whitechapel District in 1888 – most interestingly, a circle of poverty stricken prostitutes who went on to become The Ripper’s unsuspecting victims while an impassive detective works at uncovering the identity of the elusive butcher. Several strewed instances of the killer, behind closed doors, are also eerily shown, as well as the much likely generalization pertaining to his identification and overall motive. ‘From Hell’ is far better from what you would expect from a Hollywood bio-flick, since it hardly embellishes any character or fabricates much of the story; remarkably cultivating a bleak and completely ‘unsafe’ tone throughout. The London streets always covey a feeling of deep menace, even without Jack prowling around, slashing up those rough n’ tumble whores. Johnny Depp, an actor who has never ‘wowed’ to any real extremes, is surprisingly subdued in his role as an opium addicted cop who never really steals the show away, as I initially expected. Heather Graham is way too smokin’ hot, and kind of looks like a fish-out-of-water among all those raggedy hookers, though I needs me some hot, red-headed eye candy every now and again (though she doesn’t get naked, unfortunately). Strangely, the real star here is the dark entity of The Ripper, whom we really only see for short amounts of time, though his presence is strong and the scenes where he entices harlots with grapes and opium laced shots before gouging the hell out of them is creepy… Also a good deal of bloodshed here, though often stylish during the murders, themselves (namely the luminescent flash of a blade in the dark, accompanied by CG blood spatter), the aftermath is pretty gruesome, even if quite subtle, aside from grisly descriptions of vaginal mutilation and symbolic intestinal extraction. Jack’s fifth and final murder, though significantly altered for a moderately happy ending, is brutal looking and anyone who as seen the actually crime scene photos while vouch for that. And be sure to keep an eye out for Joseph Merrick (aka. The Elephant Man) who makes a brief cameo! ‘From Hell’ is a fairly truthful biographical film, despite it’s ‘Hollywood’ attitude, and is well worth a look for Ripper enthusiasts.

“Unbreakable” Movie Review

“Unbreakable” Plot Summary

A suspense thriller with supernatural overtones that revolves around a man who learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.

Larger than life

Unbreakable is a film which takes you through a different path each and every time you see it. Rarely do we come across films with underlying themes that force the viewer to sit and think why he is here, whats his role in this world, why was he born, is there any meaning and purpose to his life. Unbreakable does exactly that.

The theme is simple – if there is good, there is evil….if there is strong, there is weak….if there is intelligent, there is insane….that is how the world is…that is how it WILL be..and that is exactly what we must understand as humans, and choose our path accordingly. I’ve never seen a better film with such brilliant, thought-provoking themes.

I don’t want to reveal anything else about the movie. Get the DVD, and sit down and watch the movie without any disturbance, you’ll fall in love.

    “Star Wars” Movie Review

“Star Wars IV: A New Hope” Plot Summary

Luke Skywalker leaves his home planet, teams up with other rebels, and tries to save Princess Leia from the evil clutches of Darth Vader.

One of the most popular films of all time, and understandably so

I was never a ‘Star Wars’ guy growing up. I wouldn’t say that I was a ‘Star Trek’ guy growing up either (‘Doctor Who’ was my sci-fi franchise of choice growing up, and still is, even though I’m not a big fan of Russell T. Davies’ version of the show), but I would definitely choose my favorite episodes of the original series or ‘Deep Space 9′, ‘The Wrath of Khan’, and ‘The Undiscovered Country’ over any ‘Star Wars’ film. I’ve seen the original trilogy a couple of times previously, once as a kid, once in my mid-teens, and now I sit down to watch ‘Star Wars’ again, having been inspired by catching half of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ on TV recently and being enthralled by it

The first thing that struck me is how great the opening shot is, just after the scrolling text that is. The rest of the movie was pretty much how I remembered it being- a collection of great set-pieces and memorable characters, and a great mythology, but with a story which wasn’t nearly as grand and great as ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. Although a point of criticism aimed at ‘Star Wars’ by its (relatively few) detractors is that it doesn’t quite match the real feel of a 30’s/40’s serial, I think that it really does, and not only in the way it is shot and the transitional wipes and all that, but in the writing, the acting, and just about everything else. It has that same sense of adventure, and although this particular film is nowhere near as good as some of my favorite serials, it remains something which very accurately captures the feel of watching one of those, and its popularity (and the popularity of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’) is hence quite understandable, as very few of even the big summer blockbusters have the same sensibility and sense of adventure, and well, fun

Watching ‘Star Wars’, in spite of it not being my favorite of the original trilogy, serves as a reminder of the talent which George Lucas had at one point. I don’t think this film is as good as his previous effort, ‘American Graffiti’, which is the greatest ‘coming of age’ film I’ve ever seen, and one of the most beautiful films ever made from a visual standpoint, but it’s still got spirit and energy which his later efforts just don’t. It’s quite sad, really. There’s really nothing I can say that hasn’t been said already (which is true, certainly of many popular films, but this is freakin’ ‘Star Wars’, so trust me, I have NOTHING to add to what has already been said). There are ‘Star Wars’ devotees who swear it is the greatest of the trilogy and one of the best movies ever made, there are detractors who think it’s cheesy nonsense, and then there are others like me who like it quite a bit, but aren’t sure where all the extravagant praise comes from. ‘The Empire Strikes Back’… Well, that’s a whole other story.8/10

    “Sabrina” Movie Review

    “Sabrina” Plot Summary

An ugly duckling having undergone a remarkable change, still harbors feelings for her crush: a carefree playboy, but not before his business-focused brother has something to say about it. add synopsis

    Romantic, entertaining, and magical

I was a bit surprised looking at Sabrina’s user ratings. I thought it would be around 7, but it wasn’t. My vote for this movie was a perfect 10, simply because I can’t find any flaws from this movie. Sabrina is definitely my all-time favorite!Well, I know this genre is not for everybody’s taste, but this movie is very easy on the eyes, very light, entertaining, funny and most of all: magical. Here’s what I love about the movie: 1. The story itself the usual ‘ugly duckling’ story and it’s also a remake, but in this movie they turned that average story into a very lovely one. 2. The casting of everybody in this movie: Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond, Greg Kinnear, Nancy Marchand, John Wood, and other actors are done very well. The chemistry between Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond is just wonderful.3. Their acting is also very good, especially Dana Ivey as Mack, Linus’ secretary. Her laugh was a hilarious one :) 4. The music? It compliments the movie. The movie would not be as magical if it wasn’t for John Williams’ score. His scores are just superb. I can’t praise enough about it. If you don’t believe me, just hear the soundtrack.5. And last but not least, I just love how Sydney Pollack create those extremely beautiful shots. My favorites are the Paris and Nantucket scenes. They’re very very very lovely

Overall, this is a movie that can put you in a very good mood..

    “Happy Feet” Movie Review

    “Happy Feet” Plot Summary

Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!

    Breathtaking and Beautiful

Happy Feet begins by introducing us to an achingly beautiful world and then takes us on an extraordinary hero’s journey filled with laughter, tears, and unconditional love. It is a rare modern epic that goes far beyond the scope of most recent movies, family or otherwise, with amazing visuals, wonderful music, and simple but meaningful themes. Be warned: you might actually find yourself responding to this film on an emotional level that could be a little embarrassing. You might leave dancing- or simply breathless

The film weaves the fantasy of a musical world inhabited by penguins, a poignant and beautiful dream in which each emperor penguin searches for love by singing a unique ‘heartsong’. Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood) is hatched into this world as one very special individual. Unlike the others of his kind, Mumble seems to be without any singing ability at all. Instead he is compelled to express what lives in his heart through an incredible gift for tap dancing (granted to the character by the great Savion Glover through motion capture). Ever positive despite rejection from his community, sweet Mumble is caught up in a remarkably deep adventure story that grapples with concepts of identity, love, and tolerance while instilling a basic sense of environmentalism

The enormity of this story is quite amazing. The brilliant George Miller (creator of diverse and artful films from Mad Max to Babe) succeeds in creating what may be one of the most lovable characters ever, and then drives him to the edge of hell and back. Drawn along in Mumble’s wake, we often laugh and sometimes cry with the character as he stumbles into a group of loyal friends (two of which are voiced fantastically by Robin Williams), showers his soul mate with unconditional love, and ultimately seeks out answers to environmental issues that are far bigger than one little penguin. Nothing, though, could be bigger than Mumble’s heart. Unless you are made of stone, you will fall in love with this character, and you’ll be cheering him along for every minute of his struggles

As you come to love Mumble, you will be exposed to elegant themes that are so universal they serve as a kind of mirror. You’ll see some of yourself or someone you love in his struggle to prove that being different can be wonderful. You’ll remember past feelings and childhood fantasies as he shows that love can be worth absolutely everything. And you’ll probably feel at least a little guilty to be a human as you remember the profound and sometimes terrible impact we can have on the many wonderful creatures that surround us. Fortunately there is a good chance that you will also come out feeling empowered to make the world a little better

All in all, the experience is breathtaking.

    “Se7en” Movie Review

    “Seven” Plot Summary

Police drama about two cops, one new and one about to retire, after a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his MO.

one of the best-made films of its era and genre

Despite cliches, and a very depressing finale, this is one of the best-made films of its era and genre

The strengths of the film include an odd relationship between the two lead cops, who seem loosely based on the two lead cops of the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, but who (thankfully) never play for laughs, and never really become ‘buddies’ – the young cop is too arrogant, and the older cop has too much experience, which the young cop refuses to acknowledge. The two characters are also brilliantly acted by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (probably his best performance).

There’s one odd flaw in the film – about half-way through, I found that I had learned to ‘expect the unexpected’ from the film, which meant that the rest of the film was predictable in a bizarre way – simply decide where the expected move would be, and then expect the unexpected move instead. The most obvious instance of this is in the finale itself, which could be guessed at least 5 minutes ahead of time

Normally, this would be a formula for disaster – but fortunately, the high quality of the film-making twists the film into an edge-of-the-seat suspenseful waiting game as we watch with horror the one cop’s encounter with the insanity of pure evil

I didn’t want to admire this film (to be honest, I dislike Brad Pitt something fierce), but I’m afraid I must – very professionally made, it delivers its promised suspense all the way.
