    “Batman Begins” Movie Review

    “Batman Begins” Plot Summary

The story of how Bruce Wayne became what he was destined to be: Batman.

    Excellent Batman

‘Batman Begins’ is certainly the best among the five movies of this great hero released in the theaters. After 1776 reviews in IMDb, I do not know what I can write that have not been written before. In my opinion, this film begins wonderful with the director, Christopher Nolan, of the fantastic ‘Memento’, one of my favorite movies. The cast is a constellation, composed of excellent actors and actress: Christian Bale is awesome in the role of the troubled and confused Bruce Wayne; Michael Caine, as Alfred, elegant, gentle and tough, is also perfect; Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Tom Wilkinson, Hutger Hauer are very evil bad guys; Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman complete this lovely cast. The special effects are very good, and the cinematography recalls ‘Blade Runner’, with rainy and dark locations. The story explains the origins of Batman since his childhood in Gotham City. The soundtrack fits perfectly to the scenes. It is amazing to see that there are bad reviews of this movie, which is a very above average entertainment. My vote is nine

“Gangs of New York” Plot Summary

In 1863, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.

    Gruesome, Yet Very Good!

When I saw this movie, I was both grossed out and amazed. It’s a beautiful movie. The cinematography is very well done, and the acting is very good, too. DiCaprio gives a very good performance, and Diaz strays beyond her usual ‘pretty-girl’ roll, and does it very well. Day-Lewis’s character is very dynamic and Henry Thomas does a very good performance as DiCaprio’s friend. Just a warning for those who haven’t seen this movie: if you don’t like to watch very bloody fight scenes or watch people die in some pretty uncomfortable ways, don’t see this. The movie is very rough and seems exaggerated. All the same, I like it a lot.

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Movie Review

    “Kingdom of Heaven” Plot Summary

Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people.

A great film by Ridley Scott!!!

KOH is not Gladiator 2, first of all the movie is not about a slave dealing with Romans, at the heart of the movie is the battle for Jerusalem and two sides the Christians and the Muslims. KOH in my opinion raises up more issues than what Gladiator did and then some

The acting was great, Neeson as Godfrey of Ibelin , though he has a small role , leaves quite an impact. Bloom is wonderful, Eva Green is hot, Jeremy Irons is at his usual best , David Thewlis also puts up a great performance as Hospitaller, and Edward Norton turns in a memorable performance

The story is that in 1184 during the time of the Crusades , Balian a blacksmith becomes a knight to defend Jerusalem from Muslim invaders

Bloom as the protagonist who doesn’t believe in God or religion, ‘I am just a blacksmith’, undergoes a spiritual journey that tests both his values as a man (do I stay here and fight for people of Jerusalem) and his ideals about religion. He also has his morality come into question through almost the entire movie, does his give into temptation and join the dissenters of the church (Guy De Lusignan) or does he kill and lie to get what is offered a seat of the throne

The directing is brilliant, I believe this is shot on location if not, the sets, the special effects and budget really show. Ridley Scott as the veteran has a great eye for setting up locales, key battle scenes and incredible emotional characters

Balian’s character is also 100% vulnerable he takes his series of hard shots and hangs on to claim victory just when you think the numbers are against the guy he finds a way to outsmart his opponents

Back to story. Balian kills a priest who mocks his late wife who committed suicide. ’she is in hell because she committed suicide’ and so Balian out of rage and the contempt this guy has for him kills him. He is now a fugitive. When he learns Godfrey of Ibelin is his father, , Godfrey wants him to fight in the crusades and go to Jerusalem

Balian still in shock doesn’t want to go with his dad. When the authorities come to claim Balian and execute him, there is a big battle which results in some of Godfrey’s nights being killed. Balian seeing the sacrifice the knights have done for him, finally does go with his father

Balian gets christened as a knight, but doesn’t believe in God, is not an atheist per say, he believes in death but he doesn’t believe in the greater good

This is a key issue being brought up throughout the movie, what is religion? Is it just words or actions that we live by. Does God really offer us hope and salvation, and the answer is yes

When his dad dies and through the speeches with Hospitaller (David Thewlis) who talks about him about religion that Balian he starts to have a spiritual awakening of sorts. Exposed to the poor people of Jerusalem , Balian uses his new power as a lord and a knight to build up shelters and provide water for the people as he says which I am paraphrasing he is trying to be a good man and trying to aid the helpless

Hospitaller: ‘Religion is not made up by fanatics.. it’s about your rite of actions’ He makes the analogy that religion really is about who you are as a person and by what you do , not by what you preach as a so called Christian

Eva Green is Sybilla the future queen of Jerusalem whose brother King Baldiwn (Norton) is sick and near death. Sybilla likes Balian of Ibelin (Bloom) because she feels he is brave and good. She hates her husband Guy who is one of the knights for King of Jerusalem. She mentions she was forced to marry him in a prearranged deal so there’s an internal conflict with Guy and Balian. Guy and Balian previously meet early on when Godfrey introduces him to Lord Tiberius (Jeremy Irons) and Hospitaller. Sybilla also undergoes a transformation in the film as well, when the King dies, she sees in Balian leadership that is absent in her husband

Balian visits places in Jerusalem like the place of Christ’s crucifixion and gathers within himself spiritual strength and a sense of direction to the turbulence around him

The Muslim characters in the movie consists of Saladin (Ghassan Massoud)and , Muslim Grandee (Nasser Memazia who want Jerusalem for other uses such as for the nation of Islam. I should say the Muslim characters in this film get a large bulk of screen time. Furthermore, their characters are treated with respect and almost admiration. In fact Scott tells us their back story as well and we see display of Muslim religion in the movie such as Muslim praying in mosques and in the city of Jerusalem

This reminds me of the Palestian/Israeli conflict of sorts where you have both sides that believe in God but are battling for the control of one city, despite the fact that they both profess to believing in God. Some questions to ponder are these other people with religious ideals worse than we say they are, or are they merely some religious fanatics misusing the name of God for power? Couple that the moral questions that almost every character goes through and the questioning and denouncement and spiritual awakening of God and my you got yourself a thought provoking film

KOH is a great film. Not only is it full of action and great characters and wonderful acting but it also has a good story and challenges you as an audience to think about the messages in the movie long after you’ve left the theater!!!

    “Love Actually” Movie Review

    “Love Actually” Plot Summary

Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

    Actually…excellent

Well this movie is actually…excellent. It includes lots of characters who are all in love in their own special way and the whole story is set in London five weeks before Christmas. We meet Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), old singer who tries to get back on top with help of his loyal manager Joe (Gregor Fisher); David (Hugh Grant) has just become the new Prime Minister and he instantly falls in love with his new personal assistant Natalie (Martine McCutcheon); Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman) are married couple with their own problems; Sarah (Laura Linney) is women torn between a man she loves and her sick brother; Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Juliet (Keira Knightley) are fresh married, but Peter’s best friend Mark (Andrew Lincoln) is in love with Juliet; John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page) met on shooting of porn movie; Jamie Bennett (Colin Firth) moves to France after he found out that his girl is cheating him with his brother and there he meets Aurelia (Lucia Moniz), young Portuguese woman; Colin Frissell (Kris Marshall) hopes that he’ll find ‘normal’ girl(s) in America; and finally there is Sam (Thomas Sangster), who is young boy and also in love, which makes a problem to his stepfather Daniel (Liam Neeson).

So many characters and so many actors that are beautifully composed in this movie. All that is achieved Richard Curtis in his directorial debut. His story is for everyone. I think that lots of people could find themselves in this characters that are full of life and very real. Maybe the only characters that are little stretched are the ones of John and Judy. It’s hard to believe that porn actors are so shy like they are both presented. But here Curtis makes fun with everything. That’s why I love Britons so much. They smile to others equally as they smile to themselves. ‘Love Actually’ rises above many romantic movies because it has great story, capable direction, top class actors and magnificent soundtrack mixed with some old and some new songs. I really can’t talk about all the actors in this movies cause it would last for days; instead I’ll mention only two: Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson. Nighy brings breath of fresh air to his character while he’s making fun with his manager, his own hit song and Britney Spears. Emma Thompson, ah Emma Thompson. She makes acting so easy, makes you feel that anyone could act. She’s so natural and believable, such extraordinary actress. There is also lots of cameo roles (Billy Bob Thornton, Claudia Schiffer, Denise Richards, Sienna Guillory…) and one hilarious appearance of Rowan Atkinson as jewelery salesman (he’s like Christmas ghost, you know when he helps young Sam).

Well, I almost forgot to say what is this movie about (at least how I understand it). It gives us a message; that we must search and struggle for love, we must make sacrifice, just like Jamie and Sam for example did, while Sarah choose the other way (her brother) and she gave up. Actually everything is said in the beginning; there is enough love on this world (great idea with airport arrivals). Actually, I advice you to watch this movie. Actually, I gave 10 to it, cause it’s so much better then any other romantic movie I’ve ever watched. Or I could just say, love actually.

    “Schindler’s List” Movie Review

    “Schindler’s List” Plot Summary

Oskar Schindler uses Jews to start a factory in Poland during the war. He witnesses the horrors endured by the Jews, and starts to save them.

A film for all to see….and learn.

‘ I….pardon you.’These words spoken by Amon Goethe (Ralph Fiennes) during the film can be aptly used to signify the themes of this film: power and forgiveness

I am part of the post war generation who has been lucky enough not to experience any major war. And after watching this film, I have deep respect and feelings for those who suffered during these times, be it the Holocaust or the Nam war. This film was just waiting to be made and I’m glad it was the right man who dared to take up the challenge. Any other person would not have done it justice

The film focuses on how a German named Oskar Schindler saved the lives of thousands of Jews by employing them to work in his factory during WWII. However, I feel the film’s primary aim is not to show us Schindler’s kindness but the horrors of war. There are some of the most true and graphic scenes here ever captured on celluloid. People being shot for no particular reason, hiding in fear, stripped and gased, abused……so much so that viewers watching it for the 1st time will be deeply affected. We have never got to see this ‘flip side’ of the war in many Hollywood productions which only focuses on action and their unrealistic ‘gung-ho’ heroes. ( Another excellent film would be ‘Saving Pte Ryan’ by Spielberg again ) War and its horrors are finally and faithfully recreated for the audience

Like the film Raging Bull, its shot beautifully in black and white to reflect the era and tone of the film. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes are excellent, esp the latter for his frightening protrayal of Amon Goethe. The scene where they discuss about power is a classic and the subsequent one where Amon ‘pardons’ a young jew remains as one of my many favs!

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” Movie Review

“The Chronicles of Narnia 1″ Plot Summary

Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion. add synopsis

Can’t wait for the next movie in the series.

I watched it one of its advanced screenings this afternoon and as expected it turned out to be quite a movie

Based on the classic novel by CS Lewis. Four London children are sent to a professors country home in order for protection during World War II. There they find a magic wardrobe which leads to a mystical land called Narnia, which is being ruled by an evil witch. To defeat the Witch, they must join forces with Aslan, the lion God of Narnia, and the great battle between good and evil that’s pretty much the whole story

The acting field was average (not surprising really), Swinton was okay but not top notch kind of stuff. All the kids did a wonderful job and if i can recollect correctly thats more than what i could have done at such a young age

The special effects were above average to excellent and tell us just what you can do if you put enough effort into it. I guess you can call it LOTR for kids and i would absolutely agree with that

Overall an excellent family film and if you are a fan of the Harry Potter franchise then you should be able to dig this quite easily

P.S got my fingers crossed for the next film.9/10

    “Taken” Movie Review

    “Taken” Plot Summary

A former spy relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been forced into the slave trade.

    A pleasant surprise

Quite a surprise to see such a good movie highly ignored. The film is shot similar to the Bourne movies but carves out it’s own niche. Great job by Neeson who once again proves that he can basically do any role and is highly underrated. The premise of the movie is simple and the action starts out with a bang. I just wish the release date would be the same in the United States as abroad. Supporting cast is solid

Action seens ae intense and much more realistic then what is normally shot. I think this could have had a very good theatrical run but being released so early in other countries means it will just be pirated. Hopefully we’ll get to see a sequel but I doubt it. Check it out you won’t be sorry.
