“The Darjeeling Limited” Movie Review

“The Darjeeling Limited” Plot Summary

Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other — to become brothers again like they used to be. Their “spiritual quest”, however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins. add synopsis

An interesting journey

The Darjeeling Limited follows three brothers on a train journey across India. Suffice to say that in the course of their journey they will be faced with some complications. Things most definitely do not go according to the original plan. And it is in those times where the trip veers off its intended course that the movie is at its best. It’s not really a comedy but the film certainly has some nice comedic moments. There are some good dramatic moments but I don’t think one would label the film a great drama. It’s a journey which more often than not is certainly interesting but which in the end leaves you wanting a little more. For all the great moments, and there are more than a few, it doesn’t quite all add up to a spectacular finished product. It’s a good movie which you feel could have been great but fell a little shy of that standard

Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman play the three Whitman brothers who having not seen one another for a year are now embarking on what Francis, the oldest of the brothers, intends to be a spiritual journey. Francis is obsessive-compulsive to the extreme and his brothers often find him to be more than a touch annoying. But, as played wonderfully by Wilson, Francis comes across as rather endearing. Annoying yes but in an endearing way. The fact that he goes through the whole movie with his head and face heavily bandaged due to a motorcycle accident probably doesn’t hurt in making Francis a sympathetic figure. Brody’s Peter and Schwartzman’s Jack do not immediately appear to have as many obvious quirks as Francis, seeming to be much more ‘normal’. But we will see that Peter and Jack certainly have their own issues to deal with as well. And while if you had to choose one Wilson would be the star of the show both Brody and Schwartzman do excellent work as well

When the journey inevitably veers from its spiritual course is when the movie shines. Seeing the way these three very unique individuals react to one another in trying circumstances is a treat. Some of these moments are wonderfully comedic while other moments are appropriately solemn and serious. This is a train ride full of surprises which allow the brothers to learn a great deal about themselves and in the end maybe about each other. The film does wander at times. For all the good moments there are other times where the film struggles to maintain momentum. And really there isn’t much of a plot to speak of. But while it may be a relatively simple story it is generally an enjoyable one. It must be said that director Wes Anderson has crafted a film which certainly looks amazing. Whether it be the wonderful Indian exteriors or the brilliantly vibrant interiors of the train itself the film always looks terrific. And the three lead actors do the visuals justice, giving excellent performances in bringing this charming story to life. It’s not a perfect film by any means. It’s a movie you’ll embrace more for its moments than for the final product as a whole. There is the nagging sense that it didn’t quite all come together. But all in all the movie works. You could do a lot worse than to take a ride on The Darjeeling Limited.

    hong kong movies rock!

first of all understand what you are going to see: a ‘hong kong’ movie.if you don’t keep that in mind, you will not like it and criticize it or even worse compare it to a Hollywood made movie like saving private ryan. it’s like going to the MOMA and trying comparing an impressionist and a cubist.and as a ‘hong kong’ movie, it’s great. just great.the characters are painted black and white. the war scenes are exaggerated and truculent. and in this crazy scenario the path to redemption of men from different places and different races and cultures that must join their resources to survive.again, to be seen, as long as you understand what you’re watching.

    Great fun

A really terrific movie even if it does suffer from some plot holes and overly sentimental and long scenes, The Untouchables remains one of DePalma’s best, probably his last great film to date. Connery and Garcia are fantastic, and **spoiler alert** Connery’s death scene remains one of the best ever **. But as good as they are, De Niro’s Capone is a highlight, especially the ‘baseball’ scene. Well shot and well written as well. Lots of fun!

    “8 Millimeter” Plot Summary

A private investigator is hired to discover if a “snuff film” is authentic or not.

One of best movies I have seen

8MM is one of best movies I have seen. Nicolas Cage plays his role very good, which I expected having seen ‘Lord or War ‘recently. The plot is interesting and so are the dialogs between characters. There are quite a few tense moments in the movie which is probably why I liked this movie that much

Again trough it is only a movie as someone may say it shows you a bit of the reality out there- the one which people don’t want to admit that it exists. The movie is basically a mystery with some action elements. My opinion is that its rating on IMDb should be much higher but well I guess not everyone likes movies like this one trough I wonder why since there are many other movies that are much harder to watch than this one

One of the best things about 8 MM is its soundtrack honestly it is rare to find such a carefully chosen music to go with the scenes.

“Sleeping with the Enemy” Movie Review

“Sleeping with the Enemy” Plot Summary

Laura and Martin have been married for four years. They seem to be the perfect, happiest and most successful couple… add synopsis

I can’t live without you. And I won’t let you live without me!

After Julia Roberts hit big with the vastly overrated Pretty Woman, she tried to broaden her palette and move from the bubbly, frothy rom-coms she began in. First up was Flatliners, the disappointing life after death thriller that had no idea how to tackle its subject without lapsing into cliche, and then the much better Sleeping with the Enemy

Sleeping with the Enemy has faded somewhat over the years, even though it was a reasonable success at the time. But I think its a film well worth reexamination. It deserves commendation for having the guts to dig into domestic abuse, seen through the eyes of a wife, running for her life from an abusive husband

The opening scenes are the best, because this is where we get to see something of they’re marriage. Laura (Roberts) has been married to Martin (Patrick Bergin) for over three years (eight months, six days). Martin is handsome, wealthy, an attentive husband and he and Laura enjoy an active sex life. Director Joseph Rubin uses considerable subtlety in the early scenes to illustrate there’s trouble in paradise. Like when Martin and Laura are getting ready to go to a party. Laura is all ready, but after Martin’s remark about wearing a different dress, in the following scene at the party, Laura’s not only changed her dress, she’s changed her whole look. Her hair. Her earrings. Everything

This continues into the next scenes. The hand towels aren’t arranged properly. Something Martin has to remind Laura of. Prompting Laura to hastily rearrange the cans in the cupboard so the labels all face forward. It all builds to its crescendo when Martin talks to a neighbour. After hearing something he doesn’t like (‘that must be your wife I’ve seen staring out the window’), he suddenly hits Laura. Its a scene that shocks you into numbness. Its the first time that Martin drops his mask of smooth charisma, and reveals himself as the impulsive control freak he really is

I wish there had been more scenes like that. I would have liked to have seen more of they’re marriage. The rest of the film falls into a much more obvious stride. Laura fakes her own death, because nothing else would ever get Martin out of her life. And when he learns the deception, he begins an obsessive hunt for Laura. Its only a minor disappointment. That doesn’t get in the way of a suspenseful, psycho-thriller. And Joseph Rubin keeps the screws turning with an unbearable relentlessness

Rubin’s direction is so polished the film glides at a frightening pace. SWTE loses momentum a little in the scenes without Martin, but it isn’t long before he’s back in the picture again, and when he is, the tension level jumps right back into the red. His whole investigation into the too many clues Laura has left behind are terrifying the way he follows them like a trail of breadcrumbs right to her new front door. In fact SWTE often reminds me of the Robert Mitchum classic Night of the Hunter. They both share a similar structure. Of someone on the run, trying to start a new life but a crazed psychotic from the past is on they’re trail

Julia Roberts is OK, if a bit too quietly played. Certainly she can be an engaging screen presence. She won a well deserved Oscar for Erin Brockovich. But she never really brings Laura to life. You never get the impression she’s slowly emerging from her shell, and blossoming into a confident new woman. And her scenes with Kevin Anderson, her next door neighbour who wants to help are dreadfully twee, and drag the film right down. There’s never that much chemistry between them. Besides, everyone in the cast gets completely upstaged by Patrick Bergin

Patrick Bergin is a greatly underrated actor. With his handsome looks and winning charisma, he has all the qualities necessary to be a perfect leading man. But sadly, Bergin has never had the career he so richly deserves, even though he has talent to spare. Still, whenever someone has the brains to cast him, he never fails to steal the show, and Sleeping with the Enemy is no exception

Bergin is a powerful presence whenever he’s on screen. Like a black storm cloud on the horizon, he’s come to turn Laura’s sunny new life upside down. With his imposing height, silky voice and persuasive charm, he captures the attention effortlessly. He makes Martin utterly charming one minute, and then perfectly sinister the next. Clearly enjoying every minute of this, he relishes playing the irredeemable bastard. He’s quite funny at times too. Martin delights in his own cruelty. He even seems privately amused by it. Why Bergin never became a major star after this is a genuine mystery. His dark magnetism propels the entire film. Without him, it would be nothing

It all ends a bit predictably, but Sleeping with the Enemy is a worthwhile addition to the psycho-genre. The familiar story is buoyed by Bergin’s captivating performance, and Rubin’s dexterous direction. There’s also a great musical score from the late Jerry Goldsmith. Seemingly innocuous one minute. Edgy as hell the next. Symphony Fantastique by Berlioz is put to great effect too. It chills to the bone, and works its way into your psyche so well that whenever you hear it in the future, its guaranteed to make you think of Sleeping with the Enemy.

“The Last King of Scotland” Movie Review

“The Last King of Scotland” Plot Summary

Based on the events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s

    Great Acting! and Gillian Anderson!

I like movies based on real people in history. Because of the Oscar buzz surrounding Forest Whitaker now, I knew this movie is about Idi Amin. This is of course a familiar name in my childhood (asked in General Information contests), but I don’t really know much about him, except that he was a dictator

This film has a documentary feel to it. It is really very realistic, even if upon reading background info that the Dr. Garrigan character is fictional. Even though granted that the Idi Amin regime was compressed into a coherent Hollywood storyline, it does not feel contrived. The final sequence of events at the Entebbe Airport was very suspenseful indeed

Idi Amin was not really the lead character in this movie. It is actually Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. Being a physician, I could not help but be able to identify with his situation and dilemmas. Would you accept to be the personal physician of a country’s president upon his personal request? It seems to be an offer and career opportunity you could not refuse

There is sex and violence in this movie. I could not agree though with Dr. Garrigan’s rashness regarding his love affairs, particularly his morals of hooking up with wives of his supposed friends. But considering that this movie is set in the 1970s, that was a totally different world pre-HIV. The violence, what can I say? After watching one violent film after the other, you get sort of anesthetized already. That said, the scene with hooks at the airport was still something else! The acting is very good. Forest Whitaker has channeled the Idi Amin persona very effectively. I could feel the scary and suffocating craziness whenever he is on screen. There’s something about this performance being based on a real character though. I think it would be harder to essay a totally fictional character since you have to create this new character from scratch. And I feel James McAvoy (who was actually Mr. Tumnus in ‘Narnia’!) did so very well as Dr. Garrigan. You dislike him, yet you can empathize the stickiness of his situation

Before I end this review, I have to mention that I was very happy to see the luminous Ms. Gillian Anderson again. I totally did not know she was in this film and it was a welcome surprise. She handled her few scenes as the wife of a volunteer doctor very well indeed. I hope she gets meatier movie roles in the future.

“There Will Be Blood” Movie Review

“There Will Be Blood” Plot Summary

A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.

The best film of the year. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen.

There Will Be Blood is a story about greed, religion and vengeance due to the discovery of one of nature’s riches: OIL!Daniel Plainview(Daniel Day-Lewis) is a poor silver miner who is injured and taken in by a few men digging for oil. When one of them dies in a freak accident, Daniel brings up the man’s son as his own and becomes a self-made oil tycoon in the process. After receiving a tip-off that a seemingly impoverished town out west has a whole ocean of oil beneath the surface, Plainview rushes there and stops at nothing to get what he wants. Even if it means losing all the things most important to him, especially his SANITY. It was written for the screen and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who also directed Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love. This is definitely a far better than the two. He should get a Best Director Nod for his work. The music is unlike anything ever I’ve ever heard, and it completely drew me into the haunting mood of the movie. The movie will get a lot of Oscar Nominations, hopefully Best Picture but most importantly:Best Actor. Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably the most talented living actor and his performance here clinches that title in my opinion. At first, you see how Plainview goes from being an extremely charismatic individual to a dark, insane and vicious oilman. Day-Lewis perfects all of these characteristics to a T and no other performance this year is even in the same league as this one. The movie is about 2 hours and 40 minutes long but it certainly didn’t feel like it when I watched it. Actually, I would’ve been happier if the movie was 3 1/2 hours. It was that good. I was simply enthralled by this work of art. It is the best movie of the year with the best performance of the year.

    “cLeRKs” Plot Summary

A calamity at Dante and Randall’s shops sends them looking for new horizons – but they ultimately settle at Mooby’s, a fictional Disney-McDonald’s-style fast-food empire.

    Romantic Love

In New Jersey, when Dante (Brian O’Halloran) arrives to open the convenience store ‘Quick Stop Groceries’ for another labor day, he finds the place on fire. The losers Dante and his friend Randal (Jeff Anderson) find another job position in the fast food restaurant Mooby’s, managed by Becky (Rosario Dawson), and working with the Christian employee Elias (Trevor Fehrman). The new and improved potheads and drug dealers Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) also move their traffic spot to the new location. Dante is planning a new life in Florida getting married with his fiancee Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach) while his friend Becky is a woman that does not believe in romantic love. On the eve of Dante’s departure to Florida, Randal decides to promote a farewell and bachelor party to his best friend, and he invites Kelly and the Sexy Stud (Zak Knutson) from Tijuana to heat the celebration. However, things go wrong and Dante rethinks his future.’Clerks II’ is a hilarious sequel of the cult ‘Clerks’ that was the debut of Kevin Smith. The story follows the usual politically incorrect style of this director, with racist and sexist jokes blended with drugs, gross situations and a romance. However, what else can a viewer expect from a Kevin Smith’s movie? Rosario Dawson is extremely charming in the role of Becky, and the witty lines with double sense meanings are very funny. The conventional conclusion fits well to the story. My vote is seven

    The Best of the Best

Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner is, quite simply, the most awe-inspiring and breathtaking film made to this date. The opening shots of the movie will be permanently burned into your memory. This film has made such an impact on movie-making that it is almost impossible that another science fiction film can be made without any influence from this movie. The compelling story, the terrific direction and editing from frame to frame, and most of all, the cinematography will blow you away. The cast is perfect, each bringing something wonderful to their characters that you’ll forever remember them from this performance. Rutger Hauer in particular shines, stealing the film with every scene he’s in. This film should be on every top 10 list out there. Movie magic at its best!
