    “We Were Soldiers” Movie Review

    “We Were Soldiers” Plot Summary

The story of the first major battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War and the soldiers on both sides that fought it.

I’ve been waiting over 30 years for one

Ever since 1970 when I finished my third tour of combat duty with the Marines in Viet Nam I have been waiting for a film that reflected the American Fighting Man in the Viet Nam war as an American Fighting Man; not a drugged-out, anti-war whiner. Well this is it. The movie is non-stop action after the first fifteen minutes of character development is finished. Having experienced what it is like to be over-run by the NVA during the third week of my first VN tour I can tell you that this movie does an excellent job of showing the excitement, tension, exhaustion, chaos, and courage of an extended battle. While this is by no means the best war movie I have ever seen, it is the first Viet Nam war movie which has provided me with a sense of satisfaction after leaving the theater. Mel Gibson turns in a good performance, Sam Elliot is a bit stiff. The wives of the soldiers are believable. Including a bit of the NVA’s attitude about the war adds a balanced flavor to the film. Overall I would say that you will experience at least a small part the intensity of war if you go to this movie. I took my female companion and she was shocked, touched, and thrilled with it. As Americans, we need to remember that freedom is not, and never has been, free. It is always paid for with the blood of those who fight to get it, sustain it, or expand it. The politically correct may not like this film, but then who cares what they like. Thanks for making this film Mel. I’ve been waiting over 30 years to see it.

    “A Beautiful Mind” Movie Review

    “A Beautiful Mind” Plot Summary

After a brilliant but asocial mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn to the nightmarish.

    Beautifully done

Now this is the Russell Crowe I know and love. The Insider, L.A. Confidential… and now chalk up another calculating masterful performance

A Beautiful Mind tells the autobiographical story of John Forbes Nash Jr. a distinguished professor from Princeton who went on to make some great theories and win the nobel prize. The centerpiece of the story is the fact that John Nash suffers from schizophrenia a debilitating condition for most people which leaves them helpless. Thus it is amazing that Nash has been able to achieve what he has. For the most part of the story his hallucinations turn out to institutionalize him at one point, when he thinks the Russians are trying to secretly send him coded messages through news publications

First off the main performance by Crowe as Nash is amazing. This is the performance that I know he is capable of, complicated, passionate and serious, none of this gutteral one line BS that he uttered in Gladiator. Here we have a marvelous performance that Crowe spins as we watch Nash fall into despair, every twitch, eyes darting, and Nash’s helplessness this is not an easy task for any actor. Nash is a recluse, almost an autistic savant, we see how he trys out his theories by writing on glass windows and stuffing himself in a corner of the library. He is seriously gifted, but a social misfit. Early on we hear how Nash describes how a grade school teacher mentioned that he was born with 2 heapings of brain but only 1/2 of heart

Ron Howard’s direction is great in exposing Nash’s life. Probably the best scenes involve the use of how Nash comes up with his theories such as why the dynamics of a colleagues tie is so bad, or how a plan to get all of his college buddies laid leads to a theory that makes him famous

Also what else can I say about Jeniffer Connely who plays his wife in the film. She is passionate and gives a full perfect 10 performance as well as the wife who is trying to survive with a husband she can’t help. But the greatest achievement of this film is how it portrays mental illness from the perspective of the person suffering it

Most films that deal with someone with a mental condition always place the focus on the people who are outside the person suffering, watching from a distance, trying to understand. Here we have a film that literaly puts us in the mind of the sufferer, as to what it is to live with such a debilitating illness. We get Nash’s sense of accomplishment, but also his demons and paranoia. And probably the most important thing is that we understand that mental illness isn’t something that gets cured, the people have to live with it, and it never goes away

Also Crowe and Connely age in this film wonderfuly, so many films try to age actors/actresses in makeup and it doesn’t work, but here it is done flawlessly..Minor faults in the film deal with that some of the supporting characters are reduced to props and people we don’t know, and at one point the film bogs slightly when Nash is trying to return to Princeton to study. But these points are minor since the performances of the main characters are so well done, and the stories focus is on them to begin with

Crowe will probably get the best actor for this. Great film

    Rating 8 out of 10.

    “American Gangster” Movie Review

    “American Gangster” Plot Summary

In 1970s America, a detective works to bring down the drug empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin kingpin from Manhattan, who is smuggling the drug into the country from the Far East.

    Great Gangster Film!

American Gangster is one of the few gangster movies I have seen. I think it might be one of the best if not the best. Another thing that makes this movie great is that there is historical accuracy, not a 100 percent but still accurate enough. This film is about a detective named Ritchie trying to capture the drug warlord Frank Lucas who is involved in many operations. He did this to support his family. An outcome involving the capture of Lucas really amazes me. Nearly three quarters of New York cops were arrested and convicted of bribery charges. Ridley Scottt did a great job directing this film. He can do any genre without making a fool out of himself. The acting is pretty good. I think Denzel Washington is a great actor. Russell Crowe actually did something right for once. The technical parts of the movie is pretty good. The movie is somewhat boring but I was kept awake because I was intrigued about the plot. I rate this movie 9/10.

    “Sweet Home Alabama” Plot Summary

A young woman with a white trash background runs away from her husband in Alabama and reinvents herself as a New York socialite.

A Light Comedy That Anyone Can Enjoy

Sweet Home Alabama was a sweet and enjoyable little movie. It’s just meant for entertainment like a lot of other films and that’s exactly what this movie did, entertain. It doesn’t have to have a deep to the heart beautiful story line to be a good movie. Reese Witherspoon did wonderful in her part and so did Patrick Wilson. I loved watching her be so rude and preppy in ‘The Heart Of Dixie,’ and there are a lot of laugh out loud moments in this film, such as, when they went to the bar and she is ‘reunited’ per say with a lot of her old friends, and the part where she first sees Jake(Wilson) for the very first time. Overall, Sweet Home Alabama should just be watched for fun. Don’t be expecting too much of it.

    “Son of Rambow” Plot Summary

During a long English summer in the early 1980s, two schoolboys from differing backgrounds set out to make a film inspired by First Blood (1982). add synopsis

    Beautiful, Funny, Deeply Moving

I am so grateful that I was able to see a preview of this sweet, wonderful film last night

From the trailer, I expected a funny, cute, warm movie. Son of Rambow was all that, and SO MUCH more. The performances by the two main characters were outstanding. The depth of emotion, and honest, gripping portrayals blew me away. I was quite surprised to hear that neither boy had acted before. Natural, mesmerizing talent

The film is fun to watch, and very funny at times, but it goes so much deeper. The issues of parental abandonment, social isolation, and religious repression are seen and felt, without editorial commentary. On a personal level, I related so strongly to little Will, struggling to find his own way, and listen to his own inner guidance, at the risk of shaming his family in the eyes of their cult

This film is a fun, entertaining and deeply touching treat

I highly recommend it to all.

    “Hulk” Movie Review

    “Hulk” Plot Summary

Bruce Banner, a genetics researcher with a tragic past, suffers an accident that causes him to transform into a raging green monster when he gets angry.

    A great movie

This is, to date, my favorite superhero movie. I can but wonder why so many people think it is so bad

First, since it’s a superhero movie, there’s the action scenes. There’s not too many of them, and what there is, is quite good

I recall there being some criticism about the Hulk’s 3D model and how it is not detailed enough. While I kinda agree that it could be better, I do not think it is too distracting

Now, on to the story and characters. And here is the strongest part of the movie. The interaction of Hulk and Betty Ross is something that touches me on a personal level. And in general the characters are mainly well developed and have interesting enough interaction. The story progresses at a nice pace, not being too fast or too slow. It’s definitely a ’smarter’ and even more emotional than, say, the Spider-Man movies

I can’t think of too much else to say, since to me so much of what is good about this movie I can’t really find the words for, and in the end it’s the overall feeling that counts. I’ll end this by saying that while the new ‘The Incredible Hulk’ was a decent movie on its own right, in my books it doesn’t hold a candle to this movie.

    “American Psycho” Movie Review

    “American Psycho” Plot Summary

A wealthy New York investment banking executive hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies.

One of the greatest visions ever brought to us

Spoilers includedThis is not a slasher movie, indeed. It’s a very deep, strange and delicate moment in satire. While it’s serious, it’s ironic and ridiculous. Great stuff! Funniest and the most (yes I dare say it) brilliant satire I’ve ever seen. Christian Bale’s performance is unbelievable and if someone disagrees, they have to show me how to perform an emotional breakdown for 2 minutes on a phone. Just unbelievable. I’ve seen this 5 times now and it never gets boring. All the characters in Bateman’s world live in materialism, self-obsession, wealth and empty lives which is saved for last as the horrifying truth for Patrick. None cares for anyone. Many may think that when Bateman runs around with a chainsaw in the hallway, somebody would call the cops. But that’s theme of this film: None cares except if it has something do with themselves. Brilliant, simply brilliant. When Bateman sees this, he gives up hope, implying that he is not going to stop his frenzy until someone stops him (which happens in that embarrassing sequel which I’m never going to watch). Mary Harron’s masterpiece, Bale’s best performance (without an Oscar nod of course), at the same time one of the shortest, deepest, confusing, puzzling and mysterious satire films ever. One of the best. It’s a must see. My personal favourite. DON’T miss it if you can take some violence mixed in with irony and very black and bold humor

    Solid 9/10

    “Milk” Movie Review

    “Milk” Plot Summary

The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California’s first openly gay elected official.

Eye opening and heart breaking regardless of age or sexual preference

Born and raised in a southern, catholic community, I saw that homosexuals were always grouped with prostitutes and rapists in our religion books. Something didn’t quite sit right with me when I saw this ever since I was very young. The anti gay feelings abound in a small southern city, and, although I myself am straight, I was always in the minority of gay right supporters

Van Sant’s Milk could not have come at a better time in my life. This movie is a transcendent bio pic, and an inspiration to me now and forever. In my theater, a packed crowd with an average age of about 60 gathered. (I found this interesting, why so many seniors? Was it guilt?) The film exceeds both as a touching biography and a bold social statement. Van Sant really does what Alfred Hitchcock so famously did, and ‘played the audience like a piano’. We laughed, we thought, and came out of the theater a little bit more in tune with reality. I was the youngest in the theater by about 40 years, so I saw from an outside looking in at what this film really did

So much has been said about how well made the film is that anything else would be redundant, but the praise is well deserved. Penn should be a top runner for Best Actor, as he completely disappears into his character. Another actor that was an absolute thrill to watch in this movie was Emile Hirsch, who was fantastic

So emotionally wrenching, it will stand the test of time. It is so powerful because everyone knows someone that’s gay and someone that’s a bigot. The best movie of the year I’ve seen.
