    “Starship Troopers” Movie Review

    “Starship Troopers” Plot Summary

Humans of a fascistic, militaristic future do battle with giant alien bugs in a fight for survival.

    Great

Starship Troopers is a truly excellent film based on dark humour and great amounts of action and violence

Its effects were great for its time and great amount of tought were put into making this movie

Its unique story line is what separates this from the rest of your typical sci-fi films

Its use of advanced weaponry and other military style objects is of excellent quality. Although some parts of it were very unrealistic, it just goes to show how far man can go and the achievements it would succeed in technology

Also its comedy side of it would be more inclined to go towards the male counterpart as it can be a dark sense of humour

    Viva Pirates!

Well, first of all, when I read the review for the movie in my hometown paper, I was a little scared that Pirates might be a let down. The trailer and the movie clips, it seemed, didn’t really let on that there was much of a story line — that it just kind of goes on and on and on, like the Matrix 2, with no storyline — just fighting. Plus, most people do agree: sequels are hardly ever as good as the originals. And in this case, it’s true… Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest isn’t the original. But, its an awesome movie in its own right! There are a few surprises in this movie. A few characters come back from the first that you wouldn’t expect to see in the second. but… um! that’s all I’m saying. This movie is definitely a lot more violent and gory than the first one. Don’t bring the little kids to it. But, trust me — this is not a Matrix-type movie… There is an actual storyline. And a good one at that. Capt. Jack Sparrow is back as well as Elizabeth and Will, who are forced to find him and obtain his compass, or else they will face the gallows. Well, actually, Will has to find him. Elizabeth escapes, and yes… as you’ve seen in the trailers, she does dress up like a man for this movie. Making it all the more comical. (you’ll see what I mean).

The comedy was superb in this movie. Of course, it wasn’t as good as the first, but you can’t expect it to be. Yes, there were a few instances were they could’ve shortened the fighting scenes, but it was very well shot and scripted

I wish they would’ve changed a few things about the movie, but you can’t have everything. And don’t expect everything to be resolved at the end. No! There’s a cliff-hanger ending that leaves you wanting the watch the next one the moment the credits start rolling

If you like the first movie, you’ll like the second… And that’s all I’m saying

Jack Sparrow: ‘Why is the rum *always* gone?’ (he stands up and staggers) ‘Oh… That’s why.’

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” Movie Review

    “Sweeney Todd” Plot Summary

The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.

    Got me onside, surprisingly good

I am generally not a fan of musicals. I don’t like the artifice of singing dialogue moments. I have no problem with singing in a movie but this grates on me. Take Dreamgirls for instance. For the most part i was fine with it, good songs, performed as performances with a narrative structure surrounding them. However once of twice it had songs in place of dialogue where characters were discussing things amongst themselves or some such thing and i just got annoyed. And yes i dislike all the classics like West Side Story for this very reason

For about the first 20-30 minutes of Sweeney Todd I was having the same problem. This makes no bones about it being a musical. It’s not Rex Harrison speak-sing, it’s not staged songs in the middle of clumps of dialogue, it’s pretty much all singing. Everything. Every sentiment, every emotion, every plan, every aside. Yet after about 20 minutes or so i got used to it and went with it and then just appreciated the wonderful dark humour and sheer entertainment quality of it

Johnny Depp is great in the lead but he is complimented across the entire cast with Alan Rickman on fabulously villainous mode; Timothy Spall wonderfully revolting an Beadle Bamford – Rickman’s henchman; and Helena Bonham Carter hilariously off-centre with all the best lines. It also has a star making turn from a brilliant child actor, Edward Sanders. Much better than the now ubiquitous Freddie Highmore (who got his big break with Depp in Finding Neverland before rejoining him (with Burton) in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) he seems destined to have a great career potentially

The film’s greatest achievement however is how Burton has translated it to screen. This is a purely film musical. It never feels stagey. Unlike recent films like The Producers, Dreamgirls, Chicago which felt largely like they’d stuck a camera in a theatre and just filmed the show here Burton is brave enough to create a cinematic musical using all the tricks of his craft. That is never feels like it belongs anywhere but on a cinema screen is a huge testament to Burton’s skill in the translation and I hope the Academy is intelligent enough to recognise this come the Oscars next year

The dark humour is great, the look is stunning, Depp is gloriously unhinged while remaining believable. Even if, like me, you don’t generally like this type of musical i think you’ll get swept up in Sweeney Todd and enjoy it. Bravo Mr Burton.

    wonderful movie :)

First I borrowed this movie from videostore And loved it so much that soon I bought the DVD so I could watch it again. That’s how much i love it. I truly regret not watching it, while it was in the cinemas, it would have been great to see it on the big screen. This movie has everything: humanity, love, magic (and gorgeous cinematography), comedy, sadness, great acting. There is depth and strength to the characters in the movie. The costumes and special effects are great too. I loved the acting and how all these story lines were woven into a beautiful, delightful fable. This movie has got the heart. The music is beautiful too, it is so enchanting. It is so wonderful and bittersweet, like chocolate for the soul :) I strongly recommend it

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” Movie Review

“The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” Plot Summary

A traveling theater company gives its audience much more than they were expecting.

    Terry Gilliam finally back

It is really a shame, that Heath Ledger has left this world. Seeing him in this movie and his performance in the Batman movie (The Dark Knight), you really wish you could see him in more movies. Which of course will not happen. We can even be glad that we have the chance to watch his performance on this movie

Heath Ledger had shot most of his scenes already, before he passed away. Terry Gilliam got convinced by the crew and the cast of this film, that he should continue in Memory of Heath L. And so he came up with a few new ideas, how this movie should be. And if you have no idea about Heath Ledger passing away and that whole story, you might even think the movie was planned like that from the get go

It’s a crazy world, that Terry shows us, which won’t answer many questions at the beginning and will leave with a few at the end. An end, that is really great and comes pretty close to the ‘Brazil’ brilliance. The whole movie seems like a comeback. Not that Terry G. was gone, but his Grimm Brothers movie did hurt his reputation

After this excruciating experience (it took quite a few years from start to finish), Terry is planning to finally film one of his dream projects. Don Quixote! Johnny Depp will not play the lead (he was cast back when Terry tried and couldn’t finish, watch ‘Lost in La Mancha’, a great documentary about the ‘Un-making’ of that movie) and it’s not out yet, who will play the lead role. Heath Ledger would have been great …

    “Changeling” Plot Summary

A grief-stricken mother takes on the LAPD to her own detriment when it stubbornly tries to pass off an obvious impostor as her missing child, while also refusing to give up hope that she will find him one day.

    Very, Very, Good Movie.

You must go see this movie. YOU MUST GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!! I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect when my wife asked me to go to this movie. And of course having Jolie in it she didn’t have to twist my arm to much. We had to go out of town to see it because our local theater wasn’t showing it. The acting by Jolie was great. Eastwood’s direction was great. And the 20’s and 30’s look to the movie was so realistic. I learned some things about this time frame by watching this movie. So not only did I enjoy the movie I learned a little bit along the way. This is a Rated R movie so I wouldn’t take kids to it because there are a couple disturbing moments in the movie. If this movie doesn’t get some Oscar nominations I will be very surprised. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!

    “L.A. Confidential” Movie Review

    “L.A. Confidential” Plot Summary

A shooting at an all night diner is investigated by three LA policemen in their own unique ways. add synopsis

This is how a proper crime story should be told!

LA Confidential is a sprawling epic tale of crime, corruption and justice in Hollywood and the LAPD, with a cast to match. A truly gripping crime saga exposing the seedy underbelly of the City of Angels, where cops never let the truth get in the way of justice, and everyone knows everyone else’s dirty secrets

Criminally overlooked at both the box office and the Academy thanks to the all-conquering and over-achieving Titanic, LA Confidential will far more likely stand the test of time to be thought of as one of the best films of the 90s, and possibly the best cop film ever

After cops give a number of inmates a beating in retaliation for two of their own being put in hospital, the career-minded Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) agrees to testify to what he saw, turning in his fellow officers. When one of the cops forced out turns up dead as a result of a shooting, Exley, hothead detective Bud White (Russell Crowe) and fame-obsessed Sergeant Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) all work to find the answers. However, as they uncover the truth, it leads to more questions, of corruption, blackmail, bribery and conspiracy

The film superbly portrays the dual nature of Hollywood; glamorous parties and beautiful people, and the seemingly ever-present crime and corruption, even in the police. Danny Devito’s opening monologue perfectly sums it up – ‘There’s trouble in paradise’. This is not the city at the end of the rainbow, the city where dreams come true

A series of stellar performances from an all-star cast makes it impossible to pick the star, although Kim Basinger richly deserved her Best Supporting Actress. Kevin Spacey is terrific as ever, while Russell Crowe shows that Gladiator wasn’t his first muscles-with-a-heart role. But the real standout is probably Guy Pearce in a career-making performance as the one officer determined to what is right and just, regardless of the potentially disastrous consequences for him. However, LA Confidential is a true ensemble piece, and everybody holds their own among the starry cast. Few will have made many better films, before or since

Curtis Hanson directs in a career-defining role, the sweeping direction echoing the sprawling nature of both the story and the city. The story is a slow-burner, gradually unraveling all the twists, but instead of clearing up the mystery, the waters become muddier as the trio of officers are forced to work together. Hanson masterfully commands the James Ellroy’s source material, weaving it into a gripping multi-layered tale. The characters are extremely well developed, all three-dimensional, with no clear-cut heroes and villains. White (Crowe) in particular is the classic film noir anti-hero, the violent cop with a heart-breaking story, thinking with his muscles rather than his brain. LA Confidential is a classic 50s noir film told for the 90s, and keeps you guessing right up to the final scene as to how high the corruption goes. The two-hour running time is never felt

A superb thriller and the perfect antidote to the rash of mindless action-comedies that frequently come out of Hollywood today, LA Confidential harks back to how film-making used to be all about telling a story. And what a story it is. One of, if not the best film of the 90s.
