Fun
As someone with a longstanding fondness for most things Trek (I’ve seen most of the movies and quite a few of the shows), I have to say that JJ & Co did a fine job with this picture; the character dynamics were broadly satisfying, the action scenes entertaining and the set pieces well put together. Most of all I was impressed with the lightness of touch of the whole venture – it would be very easy to criticise the picture for making what could be considered significant changes to certain parts of Trek lore, but given that the changes were accomplished with such comfort and confidence makes them, in my view, perfectly acceptable.
With regards to the acting characterisation, everyone was pretty much solid, with perhaps the exception of Sulu, who I thought didn’t have much to do. Kudos, though, to Zoe Saldana’s loveliness as Uhura and also, especially, to Chris Pine as Kirk – I had always thought Spock was my favourite character, but it looks like I may have to reassess; Pine lives and breathes that Kirk moxie exquisitely and he’ll be great fun to watch in future instalments.
With regards to plot, it’s pretty good; there is a decent sense of internal logic to it, without it being too overwrought. True, there are a number of points where you might think, ‘Blimey, that’s serendipitous,’ but as I’d already suspended my disbelief to accept the possibility of time travelling green-blooded alien from the planet Vulcan, these things really didn’t bother me at all. Plus there were a number of points in the movie where they were saying, ‘We were pulling this kind of shtick 20+ years ago, and you loved it then; run with us on this one,’ and I was happy to.
Oh, and most importantly of all, the movie is fun; it has the good sense to not take itself too seriously, despite remaining well aware of that sense of pomp and importance that all great character dramas should have, and that isn’t a bad thing at all.
How this movie will bear up to repeat viewings, I’m not certain yet, but at the premiere, it was a blast.
Addendum: It’s a month plus since I originally wrote this and I have seen the film three times in total now – the opening ten minutes remain a manipulative marvel that the remainder of the film struggles to match, the coincidences and conveniences seem even more far fetched than ever and the jokes seem even more silly BUT I still fancy seeing it again, so I guess it must work for me.

Simply the best
This is simply the greatest Humour movie ever
Most people would call it a comedy, and boy it certainly is, but it is so much more than that. Sure, on the surface it is brilliant slapstick with scenes so hysterically funny they make you roll off your chair. If ever there was a laugh-aloud movie this is it, and it ranks right up there with classics like Blazing Saddles, Return of the Pink Panther and Monty Python’s Holy Grail. Even if it didn’t go any deeper than this, Steve Martin and John Candy perform a comic feat that wouldn’t put Laurel and Hardy to shame
But the strength of the movie is that just below this surface it plays out a very human drama. The two main characters, Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Dale Griffith (John Candy) are polar opposites. Neal is introvert, anal retentive, arrogant and ambitious, a typical stressed-out corporate middle-manager who works in New York away from his family in Chicago. Dale is a simple salesman, obese, extravert, uninhibited, a social animal with friends in every town. They find themselves bound together by fate on a journey from New York to Chicago two days before Thanksgiving where everything that can possibly go wrong does go wrong
As you would expect, the involuntary close relation of such disparate characters initially causes massive friction. Neal can’t stand Dale’s physical presence nor his endless pointless chatter, Dale is not impressed by Neal’s arrogant stiffness and his not-so-subtle attempts to get rid of him. Yet, they need each other to reach their objective and they know it. Some brilliant scenes play out this confrontation, but in the end they come to grudingly accept each other, and through their trials and tribulations on the road acceptance even grows into something resembling a budding respect. Steve Martin and John Candy are fantastic, their chemistry fuels the movie and raises it to a level well above standard comedy.*************** Spoilers ahead *********************** But the film goes deeper yet. At the next level, there is underlying tragedy that both characters try to hide in their day to day existence. It turns out that Dale has lost his wife eight years before, and has in fact been wandering and travelling throughout the country without ever going back home. He is effectively homeless and lives in cheap hotels and motels out of a trunk (which by the way also acts as a very effective comic prop), but he never discloses this to Neal. His life contains a great emotional emptiness but he can’t really face up to it and he pretends to be a happily married man. Neal, on the other hand, is so self-obsessed with his career that he sacrifices the love for his family to the point where his wife becomes mistrusting of what is going on. Here is a man who risks losing what really matters for the sake of shallow success. He vaguely understands that something is going wrong but can’t get himself to admit it or even pause and think about it
It is only when the two of them get paired up that they come to realise what is wrong with themselves. Dale is confronted with Neal’s family life, a life that he himself so sorely misses, and Neal realises in the end that life is about more than himself and that other people do matter. At the conclusion of the film they come together and fulfill each other’s needs, becoming whole in the process
This is buddy movie/ road flick supreme. The tragedy underlying the superficial slapstick makes this film Humour with a Capital H, much more so than the great comedies I mentioned before. You will have to go back to the likes of Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton to find anything comparable
However, and this is where the true greatness lies, in the final analysis this film is not about the drama of two different characters at all, but about the opposing forces struggling within each of us ourselves. We all have a Neal and a Dale side, apparent opposites that cannot exist together, but only by accepting this and giving both sides equal weight can we become whole human beings. The film shows that this may at first appear an impossible task, frought with risk and danger, but if we persevere it can be done, and the prize of healing ourselves is worth it
Hilarious comedy, superb drama and ground truth – few movies would even dare to try and combine these themes. Planes, trains and automobiles does, and it succeeds brilliantly. Martin and Candy deliver stellar performances that work at all of these levels. Definitely one of the best movies ever, and vastly underrated.

I can’t understand why so much people hate this movie or the Transporter films, this movie is great ! Yes it often has it’s ‘Impossible scenes’ but what movie hasn’t ? Look to Die Hard, look to f(u)cking Indiana Jones look to Freakin’ James Bond… The action is fast it has good soundtracks (!) so if you get the chance to buy/rent this movie Do It
I absolutely love the role of the Transporter he does it superbly. If you have the chance look the other ones too… they’re equally good
For me this movie deserves at least an 8/10. Hence I’m giving it a 10 :)

Pretty good. A fun family movie.
Way better than I thought it’d be. I was expecting total garbage when I saw the movie today, but I was pleasantly surprised. Adam Sandler is very funny in this movie. It’s fun for the whole family. Keri Russell is a very good actress in her role. Those cute little kids that plays Adam’s niece and nephew are good in their roles. Russel brand is good as the best friend. Richard Griffiths is perfect as always in everything he does. The guy that plays Adam’s dad was amazing. I loved his voice over. I enjoyed it very much. My only complaint is that the Guinea Pig jokes were a little much at times. All and all it was a good movie.

More than good enough to see – ignore the bad reviews
Sometimes, I think critics and such miss the point of a comic book movie. A comic book movie is not about romance, or exploration of self or moral sermons or parodies of real life. Comic books are about imagination and they move fast while taking some things for granted to let you work out on your own. A comic book movie should be similar in my opinion. To me, Spiderman is the best comic book movie of all so I will compare to that a lot. The Dolph Lundgren Punisher (not to be confused with the more recent far superior Thomas Jane Punisher) was one of the worst
What makes them different? In Spiderman, things happened and people just accepted them and it moved to the next frame. Some wonder but not a lot of long speeches and introspection. Oh, you can shoot webs and stick to buildings, cool. In the DL Punisher, everything had to be discussed and thought out and the motivations pointed out, etc. Leave aside that DL’s acting was bad and the other factors, it made for a boring slow story that even the critics hated. Spiderman snapped because it kept moving, made it points and left some things for people to just imagine or figure out on their own. Spend several scenes on making up believe that Uncle Ben loved Peter or just have Peter say it and assume we will take it at face value. You go with making the statement and keeping the movie moving. That is what a comic book would do. They would not spend an issue trying to develop a issue or emotion usually, just say it and then let it be motivation for the real story
Well, that is a lot of how Ghost Rider (GR) is. Critics complain because too much is just assumed. Johnny Blaze gets bad news about his father yet barely reacts other than going to work on his bike. Johnny makes a deal with the devil and his dad is miraculously healed only to have an accident. It all happens quickly and is more of a matter of fact type situation without prolonged examination about the emotions. That is what it should be! A comic book would keep moving and so should (and does) this movie. No wondering that there is a devil, that the devil wants to make deals, etc. It just is what it is and the story keeps going. Just like a comic book
Having said all of that, I actually liked this movie. I did not plan to like it but it was a lot like the Thomas Jane Punisher. It was clear, superficial and stayed in line with most of the comic book. Sure, in the comic there is more of the tortured soul but there was just not enough time for that in the movie so they fineesed it. There was a lot of flack about how in the Spiderman movie, Spidey’s web was natural whereas in the comic it is a webshooter he made which showcased his incredible science talent. That is an important point in the comics because Spidey relies on his brain as much as his brawn usually but the movie saw that the time it would take to highlight the creation of the webshooter was just not worth the trade-off so ditched it in favor of natural ones. It maintained the crucial part (webshooter) while keeping the story moving and that is what GR does in many points. I would like to have seen more development of how he struggled with the curse, with having to try to gain control of the demon aspect and how if he relies on his power too much, the demon part gains strength but that will hopefully be for a sequel to explore. With so much to cover and only 1 movie to do it, many things have to be glossed over
The visual effects are not incredible but they are perfectly acceptable. I did not like the thought of Nicholas Cage in the movie but he did fine. There are complaints about Eva Mendes doing poor acting but she was not hired to act in this one. She is eye candy and she does that really well just as the female love interest in a comic book would do. This is not Cannes and this film is not trying for an Oscar or critical acclaim. I would not want to see such a movie anyway. I wanted to see the Ghost Rider like I remembered reading when I was growing up in the 70s. I wanted the cool motorcycle (really a chopper). I got that. I got the visual effects I wanted and the story that made me remember the comic books. I was not inspired to save the world, to protest oil drilling or to volunteer for political duty but that is NOT what a movie like this is about. This is about the wonder of a comic book and the critics seem to be unable to understand that. I have it an 8 out of 10 only because it might have had some better scenes but I feel like I got my money’s worth and to me, that is the real merit of any movie
See this movie if you liked comic books. If you want art, go see Babel or The Queen or whatever and save yourself the frustration but leave the fun mindless movies to those of us who do enjoy them.

“From Hell” Plot Summary

Surprisingly decent Jack the Ripper themed horror flick
Many interpretations of Jack the Ripper’s allegory have been delineated throughout the horror genre’s past era, and while ‘From Hell’ may not be the best, it portrays the historical events in a satisfactory manner. This particularly accurate account of the London serial killer shifts it’s focus between different sets of people residing in the Whitechapel District in 1888 – most interestingly, a circle of poverty stricken prostitutes who went on to become The Ripper’s unsuspecting victims while an impassive detective works at uncovering the identity of the elusive butcher. Several strewed instances of the killer, behind closed doors, are also eerily shown, as well as the much likely generalization pertaining to his identification and overall motive. ‘From Hell’ is far better from what you would expect from a Hollywood bio-flick, since it hardly embellishes any character or fabricates much of the story; remarkably cultivating a bleak and completely ‘unsafe’ tone throughout. The London streets always covey a feeling of deep menace, even without Jack prowling around, slashing up those rough n’ tumble whores. Johnny Depp, an actor who has never ‘wowed’ to any real extremes, is surprisingly subdued in his role as an opium addicted cop who never really steals the show away, as I initially expected. Heather Graham is way too smokin’ hot, and kind of looks like a fish-out-of-water among all those raggedy hookers, though I needs me some hot, red-headed eye candy every now and again (though she doesn’t get naked, unfortunately). Strangely, the real star here is the dark entity of The Ripper, whom we really only see for short amounts of time, though his presence is strong and the scenes where he entices harlots with grapes and opium laced shots before gouging the hell out of them is creepy… Also a good deal of bloodshed here, though often stylish during the murders, themselves (namely the luminescent flash of a blade in the dark, accompanied by CG blood spatter), the aftermath is pretty gruesome, even if quite subtle, aside from grisly descriptions of vaginal mutilation and symbolic intestinal extraction. Jack’s fifth and final murder, though significantly altered for a moderately happy ending, is brutal looking and anyone who as seen the actually crime scene photos while vouch for that. And be sure to keep an eye out for Joseph Merrick (aka. The Elephant Man) who makes a brief cameo! ‘From Hell’ is a fairly truthful biographical film, despite it’s ‘Hollywood’ attitude, and is well worth a look for Ripper enthusiasts.

After an encounter with UFOs, a line worker feels undeniably drawn to an isolated area in the wilderness where something spectacular is about to happen.

A utilities worker named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) has an encounter with a UFO (in a great scene). After that he begins to have ‘visions’ of a mountain. Also a single mother (Melinda Dillon) and her young son also have their home ‘investigated’ by aliens while they sleep. They also start to have visions of the same mountain. It seems UFOs and strange appearances are happening all over the globe. Naturally the government tries to cover it up. Why are the aliens here and what do they want?The same year George Lucas released ‘Star Wars’ this movie came out. While ‘Star Wars’ was about warfare and destruction this film is a very gentle, lyrical movie about a peaceful encounter with aliens. The government DOES try to cover everything up but, unlike later movies, they have no interest in destroying the aliens–only to make contact. That’s a very positive message…but this movie has serious problems
The human characters are never fully realized. Dreyfuss and his wife (Teri Garr) seem to have a very dysfunctional marriage with three truly obnoxious kids. You don’t like any of them. As for Dillon we know NOTHING about her–just that she’s a single mother. That’s it. This is writer-director Steven Spielberg’s fault–he doesn’t develop any of his characters. But this was one of his first movies so it can be forgiven. Also there are gaps in logic and numerous scenes in which three or four people are talking at once making it impossible to figure out what’s going on. And WHY is the TV ALWAYS going at Dreyfuss’ house? It is needed in one sequence but most of the time it’s just more annoying background noise
That aside this film is great. The sequences with the aliens are used sparingly until the end–which makes sense. And the special effects are just superb–they even work by today’s standards! The last half hour or so at Devil’s Tower, Wyoming is just jaw-dropping. The acting is actually pretty good. Dreyfuss and Dillon are very good (considering they’re just reacting to nothing) but Garr is whiny and annoying. Also French director Francois Truffaut does a rare acting role here. Vilmos Zsigmond did the astounding cinematography (the nighttime scenes are just beautiful) and John Williams added a great score. And the tune used with the aliens was a BIG hit in 1977! Worth seeing for the special effects and some truly great sequences. Just ignore the lousy ‘dramatic’ scenes with Dreyfuss and his family. Try to see it in a theatre. I give it a 9.

I LOVED the movie… I’m from Scotland and it was released here 25th may 2006. I just couldn’t BELIEVE the effects that happened, but to be honest the story could have been much better. I don’t like how the phoenix story is explained as it is clearly made that jean becomes the phoenix at the end of xmen 1… (for you ppl that don’t know, it’s supposed to be when magneto’s statue of liberty/mutant creator/thing is supposed to turn everyone into mutants that the phoenix force is to come into contact with jean, therefor, that is how we see her gasping/shocked after it is destroyed), not that it has simply been a part of her for the whole time since Xavier and magneto met her as is explained in xmen 3! The story line in the movie jumps from character to character without much inter loop. It can jump from one scene to the other but you can still figure out where the story is going. One thing that really got me was the fact that in one scene, kitty pryde is an innocent student taking part in a classroom discussion with Xavier, and the next after his parting, she is suddenly a main character in a room with iceman, storm, wolverine and beast. Where is the gradual trust/bond that is made up through the previous 2 movies that makes the characters an ‘x-man’? It’s obviously missed with this movie and throws kitty straight into the limelight which was slightly disturbing (just like the fact that she takes it upon herself to save the mutant at the source of the ‘cure’).I would love to go into detail about the movie as so many things remain unanswered but I can’t spoil it for the other fans who are yet to see it. All I have to say is be prepared to laugh, cry and deal with the demise/rise of certain characters in this movie. They certainly came as a shock to me, even after reading rumours circling the web about their story in the movie, I certainly wasn’t prepared for the demise of a few characters and the hurt that was shown by the others. All in all, a FANTASTIC movie that has to be seen by not only x-men fans, but by all to complete this ’supposed trilogy’.The ending of the film (the effects and the powerful end to one of the characters knocked me for six completely!), and by all means, the clip that was shown to me after the end credits also took me by surprise. Like I said ’supposed trilogy’ could make it into a 4-some. I’ve heard certain rumours about different end credits shown to different ppl and the one I was shown featured Moria McTaggart and her patient…. If it’s true, I would like to see the ‘jean grey/phoenix’ ending to the movie, just so it can relate to the comics and build up a story for the 4th xmen movie… but then again.. I think the probability of that is slim to none
From seeing the ‘Moria McTaggart’ ending and hearing about the ‘Jean Grey ending’, I would have LOVED if both were shown and they were intersected to create the 4th x-men movie, but that all depends on how well this movie does at the box office and how well the fans receive it
I hope and dream for someone to announce X-Men 4 so the story can continue, but with certain characters gone, it may not be entirely possible. It’s up to us, the fan’s, to make X-Men 3 a success and for others to make X-Men 4 a possibility….. Here’s hoping we can continue the story and resurrect/reclaim the characters’ demise in X-Men 3 to be a powerful resurrection to success for a hopeful X-Men 4.

This is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. This movie draws you in; you get scarred for the characters and hope for the defeat of the villains. This is one of those rare moments where you forget that your watching a movie.
I really think that this was the best movie of 2005. Bruce Willis does a great job but the breakout artist is Monica Belluci. The fact that she is possibly the most beautiful woman alive doesn’t hurt in attracting you to this film.
The first part of the movie is the character of Bruce Willis’ dilemma of committing to duty or doing the right thing. We get to see him and Monica Belluci’s struggle to trust and understand what it is they should do. The second part of the movie is a good 30 minute fighting scene that keeps you wondering which of the good guys will day. This is the best movie.
