“Avatar” Movie Review

“Avatar” Plot Summary

A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

AVATAR has a soul

AVATAR has a soul I saw AVATAR today. It was a boiling 40 degrees Celsius in Australia. I caught a bus and train to get there. I spent months on a forum before that. Incremental stops included a scriptment, stills, a teaser, a foot, AVATAR day and a full trailer. Now released I have had many reviews to read which have been mostly very positive. It is a marvel to watch. The opening scenes are very sci-fi with a glimpse of low gravity aboard a space-craft. Sam Worthington fills us in with a short narration. He is taking over his diseased brother’s role in the AVATAR program. These opening scenes are actually among the most effective 3D in the film, pulling you into this story, tracking shots putting you into the steps of the characters. I jump ahead, like the film, to The world of Pandora which is lush with earthly life as seen through pulp fantasies. The rendering of this world is terrific. The life and activity is in the plants as much as it is the animals. Wonder is generated with this ambitious creation. Cameron has lifted the bar. The CG is the best I have ever seen. Everything you have heard is true. The 3D enhances this with leaves falling and swaying branches life-like in the foreground. The realisation of the Navii is also ambitious. They are CG but there are many moments that make you think they are real and in terms of the story they are more than good enough to propel the narrative with strong emotional content. I went into this film knowing mostly everything within it. Hours of reading, some from the treatment and pages of the recent reviews. It is very much a family film like ‘Nealz’ said in his IMDb review. There is a moment where one of the ferocious animal species that earlier were attacking Jake are seen with a litter, the children in the audience loved the cute pups! The spiritual side of this film is much better than expected. It is in fact a beautiful story. The structure is classical film-making but with amazingly new scope in CGI to express grand images. An epic The journey that Jake takes through Pandora is lovely. He is taken in by the Navii and explores their culture, language and habitat. Natirii, the female Navii he meets while lost, helps him through this journey. This is a love story of both soul mates and with a wider picture. Existential connections with the natural world. Personal destiny. I had tears in this film. I tried to hold them back but by the roll of credits they came. This is a movie that I have anticipated for so long. I think the ingredients of its story and my connection to this films production gave me a very emotional response. I cant imagine this disappointing any of the fans on the board. Keeping in mind that it is a family film but delivered everything I wanted. Expect a special edition. After AVATAR is a hit, a special edition will make its way to the cinema. I can understand why they would cut the earth scenes and it works. The actual film seems pretty brisk and it could also have more padding out. You want more of it and that is a triumph for this type of film running two and a half hours. It is a good balance because at two and a half hours AVATAR is aimed directly at the cinema going audience. Broadly appealing with elements for everyone. My earlier prediction of a billion or more world-wide seems safe. I don’t want to go on about visuals too much but the lovely shots of the natural wonderland of glowing life in still 3D shots is magical. Something to take kids to see. Floating tiny neon life jellyfish their way through the air with grace. The monkey-like extra-limbed creatures with the peeping eyes flock through the forrest quickly. The creature design is done in a clever way with the motion of a living thing. The action is over the top, epic, frenetic and a new take on the battle sequence. James Cameron didn’t stuff this up. He probably pressed the studio way beyond their comfort zone with the time, money and effort that has gone into this. Sam Worthington is excellent casting choice. Sigourney Weaver ads frank reason. Stephen Lang chews the scenery as the ultimate you know what. Zoe Saldana is beautiful as Jakes guide into this world and. I went to the cinema and it was a very hot day. By the time I left the cinema, the streets were wet with rain. A warm humidity was thick in the air. Lightning splashed my walk to the train station with white light. I honestly wondered if It was my time to be struck down with a bolt of electricity from the sky. Watch this film. It is destined to become a childhood classic to many little-ones too young to be on this forum. It will be talked about at high school by male and females as spectacular. It will be watched multiple times by fans. I loved it but beyond my appreciation for the film itself, is the the message of love permeating from this movie that I hope enters the zeitgeist like elements of Cameron’s other stories have. At its heart is a soul. AVATAR is an achievement in many technical departments but I wouldn’t say the story is deficient. It is a beautiful experience and the story is surprisingly what I loved most. Believe the hype.

“Indecent Proposal” Movie Review

“Indecent Proposal” Plot Summary

A married woman agrees to have sex with another man for $1,000,000. add synopsis

Explores what love really means

Warning, may be some spoilersIndecent Proposal is a film that knows exactly how someone feels when it comes to jealousy. There is a great line in the film after Demi Moore comes back from her encounter with gazillionaire Robert Redford. Her husband, played perfectly by Woody Harlesson, is asking her questions that don’t need to be answered. Because if they are, it will put a damper in their marriage. But he persists and finally Demi shouts out to him, ‘ If I tell you he wasn’t any good then I’m a liar. If I tell you that he was then I’m a whore. ‘ What a brilliantly written line and it is one that lends a perfect ear to what the film is about in most senses. Jealousy is a powerful emotion but being broke and in love is just as powerful on the other end of the scale. What is so great about this film is that is makes us all question what we would do in that exact same situation. Would you let your wife sleep with a man for one million dollars? Could you look at it and say that it was only one night and you can deal with it? Would you say that your marriage is strong enough to overcome something so meaningless? And that is the key issue right there. Is it really that meaningless? If you are married and in love ( if you are together in a monogamous relationship), is there ever a time when sex is meaningless enough to overlook, even if all of your financial problems are solved in the aftermath?Indecent Proposal is a great film in almost every sense. The actors are great, especially Oliver Platt who has a cameo as their lawyer and he gets all the laughs. The direction is great as it never gets anywhere close to pornographic, and it lets the audience decide for themselves what happened on that fateful night. When you look at the whole concept of the film, you know it could get cheesy if handled poorly and irresponcibly. But it never does. It stays on course and delivers the goods. I highly recommend this film and I think it is good to watch it with someone that you love. It will invoke some very interesting conversations after words. But don’t watch it with them if you are afraid of the answers that you might get. That, to me is good film making. Something that leaves you discussing it long after it is over. Indecent Proposal does that.

“Max Payne” Plot Summary

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a police detective whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin out to avenge her sister’s death. The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

liked the game, loved the movie

I went into Max Payne thinking I was in for another disappointment when it comes to video games being brought to the big screen, I was wrong. I’ve played the game and I thought it was okay. It seemed more like the Matrix games than anything original, but I digress. I was wowed by the film in the way they actually made it a story and make you actually care for the main character. That hasn’t happened for me since the first Mortal Kombat film, but then the second one sucked so bad I almost cried

The only reason I didn’t rate this higher is that the film takes at least 20 mins to really get going, but after that it sucks you right in. I loved the whole soldiers taking a liquid drug to make them feel invincible to the whoever they were at war with, which sometimes feels like that could be coming around the corner any day now. When the head bad guy starts acting like he’s some kind of god from the drugs I started thinking ‘Can’t wait till Payne kicks his Ass!’ As a story, I think it is a clever mystery story including fabled occult beliefs from the Norse mythology and when Max starts seeing them after taking the drug to get to the bad guys is pretty friggin’ sweet. I felt the film ended as good as any film noir could end after the resolution of the characters. I can’t wait to buy it on DVD and watch it again. That’s all I have for now. See ya next time.

“Happening” Plot Summary

A strange, horrible and unprecedented crisis begins in Central Park. A high school science teacher, his wife and a young girl do what they can to survive it.

wow!

This was one of the most unfulfilling experiences i have had in the last 10 years! Honestly who decided this should be released to the public and why. a B list star cast doesn’t make a block buster it evidently just makes for a BUST. M night shyamalan has never put out a stunning film and this is no exception. i feel taken for a ride and dropped off dumbfounded. i should have known better, I could write a film about getting wasted and renting this movie (which is exactly what happened) and im pretty sure as long as it had one of the Wahlburgs in it i would it would be a smash! in conclusion, some of the worst acting i have seen from Hollywood, appalling writing, and over all else a terrible plot.

i need a drink!

    “The Big Lebowski” Plot Summary

“Dude” Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.

    A True Masterpiece

This movie is sort of like a circus minus the clowns and the freak show; everything about it is attractive and entertaining. The characters are deep and interesting, and even the most minor of characters have their own unique personality. The camera work is ingenious, as are the visuals and costumes. The comedy comes in from all sides, whether subtle, witty, or straightforward. The Coen Brothers use stereotypes and wording like Van Gough used a brush. It is one of those few movies where almost every line is quotable and easily recognizable. Unlike most comedies (if you could call it such) the story is both followable and enjoyable. One of the true masterpieces of our time. If you don’t like this movie, I’m sure you hate to laugh.

    “Dreamcatcher” Movie Review

    “Dreamcatcher” Plot Summary

Friends on a camping trip discover that the town they’re vacationing in, is being plagued in an unusual fashion by parasitic aliens from outer space. add synopsis

    Well-adapted Stephen King story.

At first glance, Lawrence Kasdan might seem an odd choice to be directing a slasher/science fiction movie based on a Stephen King novel. But the story revolves around a group of friends who grew up together and who are having an adventure in the woods, albeit with an extraterrestrial, so it works out quite well. William Goldman also wrote the screenplay, so this film has a good pedigree

The four friends grew up together in a small Maine town, and what binds them to one another is their encounter with saving a retarded boy, Duddits, from being tormented by the school jocks. Duddits isn’t what he appears to be, however, and through their friendship, the four acquire extra-sensory powers – being able to read other people’s minds, being able to find lost things, etc

The four guys are out on their annual getaway in the Maine woods when a lost hunter staggers into their cabin one day. He’s sick, though, and in due course it’s revealed that he’s been infected by some alien organism, which resembles a large wormlike creature that has grown inside him. It escapes and kills one of them, and then the extraterrestrial appears and takes over the body of the remaining guy (the other two were off on a beer run).

The film is about stopping the alien from taking over the Earth. Its plan is to deposit these worm creatures in the reservoir that provides Boston’s drinking water, so that they can infect the population and multiply. The alien hits a snag, though, because he’s using the body of a man who can communicate through ESP, and his remaining friends realize what’s going on and set out to stop him

One of the flaws in the movie comes about with the introduction of Morgan Freeman and Tom Sizemore at this point. They play the leaders of some special ops force whose job it is to track and eliminate extraterrestrials. It was necessary for the story to advance to have the presence of this military unit, however, it didn’t make sense to have the two best known actors in the film chewing up unnecessary scenery. Lesser knowns would have worked better and these characters roles subdued

I won’t spoil the ending here, but overall I thought this was a pretty entertaining film.

    “Ghost” Plot Summary

After being killed during a botched mugging, a man’s love for his partner enables him to remain on earth as a ghost. add synopsis

    Love is a powerful emotion

If you have ever lost a loved one and want to believe that they are still somewhere you will be touch by the wonderful and not over sentimental ‘Ghost’.Some people may not find ‘Ghost’ to have any sense but if you are romantic and open-minded it will hit you like the fast moving train.’Ghost’ is an epic love story of Molly (Demi Moore) and Sam (gorgeous Patrick Swayze) who have so strong relationship but it is taken from them so early. After a tragic mugging episode the banker Sam loose his life and leaves Molly to face the cruel reality on her own. Sam is persistent to let Molly know that he is still there watching and protecting her. By the act of coincidence Sam finds a way to communicate his loved one with the help of fraud sidekick Oda Mae Brown (hilarious Whoopi Goldberg whose Academy Award-winning performance was very well earned!). There is some twist and turns, some difficulties but nothing can stop the true love finding it ways. Even if it does mean beyond the grave.’Ghost’ was the unexpected hit movie of the year 1990. It won two Oscars. Dazzling Goldberg got a Golden Man for Best Supporting Actress and Bruce Joel Rubin got his prize for his writing skills. It launched the era of new special effect techniques, and boosted the careers of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze

First time I saw the movie it didn’t affect me as much as it did when I saw it for the second time. I wept like a little waterfall and felt strongly that there must be a life after death

Vincent Schiavelli was dark but sympathetic Subway Ghost who guided Sam on his path to become a real ghost

The film produced some of the funniest scenes in movie history. While Sam is trying to get Oda Mae to help him he tortures her by singing in a monotonous, deep-voiced way ‘I’m Henry the Eight I am’! That’s so great. Also the word ‘ditto’ became famous. I bet the ‘Ghost-generation’ has repeatedly said it to their loved ones

If you manage get your mind open and let ‘Ghost’ into your heart it effects might just surprise you! 9,5/10

    “License to Wed” Plot Summary

A reverend puts an engaged couple through a grueling marriage preparation course to see if they are meant to be married in his church. add synopsis

    Decent comedy

OK now this movie wasn’t bad at all, I am a pretty big Robin Williams fan, I mean like I love Mrs. Doubtfire, RV, and a couple other of his movies and stand up specials too. Even though I thought he was a bit held back in this one since he was the playing the role of a reverend and couldn’t say his normal jokes that makes him hilarious. John Krasinski and Mandy Moore weren’t bad as the couple who are struggling to get married but then realize that there is more to it than they realized. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10 because I had a few laughs but it probably could have been better. I would recommend this to all Robin Williams fans, just don’t expect him to be hilarious in this one and to comedy fans as well.

    “Dodgeball” Plot Summary

A group of misfits enter a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their cherished local gym from the onslaught of a corporate health fitness chain.

    Great Fun!

Picked this up on DVD for ?3 ($6) – didn’t know anything about it We thought it one of the funniest films we’ve seen for some time. Thought I’d check out the rating and was surprised how low (6.6) it was. Then checked out some of the ‘Hated It’ comments to see why this could be I guess that a lot of people find this film offensive, with stereotypical attitudes – like how a bisexual woman could kiss both a man and a woman (an extraordinary observation). Or that it was unfair to poke fun at someone who spent all his waking hours dressed up as pirate. I think that comment came from a member of the Long John Silver Alliance

Lighten up! Comedy – like any other artistic endeavour is subjective – all I can say is that I laughed and found that at many points the jokes were coming faster than I could process them – always a good sign

A good combination of slapstick humour and smart-ass comments delivered at a rapid pace And an ever-popular theme: will the underdogs triumph? Watch it and find out
