“A Beautiful Mind” Plot Summary
After a brilliant but asocial mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn to the nightmarish.
Beautifully done
Now this is the Russell Crowe I know and love. The Insider, L.A. Confidential… and now chalk up another calculating masterful performance
A Beautiful Mind tells the autobiographical story of John Forbes Nash Jr. a distinguished professor from Princeton who went on to make some great theories and win the nobel prize. The centerpiece of the story is the fact that John Nash suffers from schizophrenia a debilitating condition for most people which leaves them helpless. Thus it is amazing that Nash has been able to achieve what he has. For the most part of the story his hallucinations turn out to institutionalize him at one point, when he thinks the Russians are trying to secretly send him coded messages through news publications
First off the main performance by Crowe as Nash is amazing. This is the performance that I know he is capable of, complicated, passionate and serious, none of this gutteral one line BS that he uttered in Gladiator. Here we have a marvelous performance that Crowe spins as we watch Nash fall into despair, every twitch, eyes darting, and Nash’s helplessness this is not an easy task for any actor. Nash is a recluse, almost an autistic savant, we see how he trys out his theories by writing on glass windows and stuffing himself in a corner of the library. He is seriously gifted, but a social misfit. Early on we hear how Nash describes how a grade school teacher mentioned that he was born with 2 heapings of brain but only 1/2 of heart
Ron Howard’s direction is great in exposing Nash’s life. Probably the best scenes involve the use of how Nash comes up with his theories such as why the dynamics of a colleagues tie is so bad, or how a plan to get all of his college buddies laid leads to a theory that makes him famous
Also what else can I say about Jeniffer Connely who plays his wife in the film. She is passionate and gives a full perfect 10 performance as well as the wife who is trying to survive with a husband she can’t help. But the greatest achievement of this film is how it portrays mental illness from the perspective of the person suffering it
Most films that deal with someone with a mental condition always place the focus on the people who are outside the person suffering, watching from a distance, trying to understand. Here we have a film that literaly puts us in the mind of the sufferer, as to what it is to live with such a debilitating illness. We get Nash’s sense of accomplishment, but also his demons and paranoia. And probably the most important thing is that we understand that mental illness isn’t something that gets cured, the people have to live with it, and it never goes away
Also Crowe and Connely age in this film wonderfuly, so many films try to age actors/actresses in makeup and it doesn’t work, but here it is done flawlessly..Minor faults in the film deal with that some of the supporting characters are reduced to props and people we don’t know, and at one point the film bogs slightly when Nash is trying to return to Princeton to study. But these points are minor since the performances of the main characters are so well done, and the stories focus is on them to begin with
Crowe will probably get the best actor for this. Great film
Rating 8 out of 10.

“Public Enemies” Plot Summary
The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s.
One of the best movies of 2009
I am a big Michael Mann film, Heat & Collatoral are amazing films and I feel that Mann delivered the goods big time in Public Enemies
Public Enemies is the story of the Depression Era bank robber John Dillinger (played by the charming Johnny Depp) who leads the FBI on a cat mouse chase. J. Edgar Hoover (played by Billy Crudup), the director of the FBI, orders Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) to hunt down John Dillinger and his gang. With the FBI hot on his tail, Dillinger still manages to pick up a girl he likes in Billie Frechette (played by Marion Cottliard).
This movie is very entertaining and mesmerizing, it may have started out slow for the first third, but during the last 2/3′rds of the film this movie picked up. Mann is a expert craftsman, he gets you to fall in love with John Dillinger, yet he gets you to feel sympathetic for Melvin Purvis, who was given a practically impossible task
This movie is highlighted by the stunning cinematography that Mann is known for, as well as the action scenes such as the Little Bohmia shootout and the Dillinger jail break and others
I honestly could see Billy Crudup getting an Oscar nod for this movie, because his Hoover was a scene stealer, and maybe Johnny Depp. Bale as always plays a great straight man like in much of movies to counteract the eccentric leading man (i.e. 3:10 to Yuma, The Dark Knight). Cotiliard is also solid as Billie, and the times when she hits her mark, she REALLY hits it and gets the audience behind her
This is by far the best and most intelligent movie to come out in the summer of 2009. I recommend that most people buy the Blu-Ray/DVD because they will not be disappointed. No one in Hollywood does high octane crime dramas as well as Michael Mann.

Will Ferrell at his best
Seriously Here, Ferrell plays a good ole country boy with rocks for brains and only one worry in the world and that’s winning. Sound like a familiar past TV character of his? Ferrell is also a Writer on this film with Director Adam McKay, who together have made a solid comedy team since those SNL days, including 2004’s ‘Anchor Man.’ But standing just as tall in this picture is the surprising man-about-town, Mr. Sasha Cohen (Borat, Ali G, Bruno) as Ricky Bobby’s French nemesis, Jean Girard. This guy is such a great character actor it was difficult to even spot him at first. But who else would be brave enough to kiss Ferrell on the lips?www.manwithavan.blogspot.com

“Funny People” Plot Summary
When seasoned comedian George Simmons learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship cause him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act.
Funny People… Smart Movie
Funny People: 8 out of 10: What is amazing about Funny people is considering its set-up and storyline it manages to deftly dodge a veritable minefield of bathos laid out before it. The story is about comedian, who is super rich after a string of really bad comedies (Adam Sandler playing himself), finds he has version of leukemia and well is going to die soon. Therefore, he reflects back on his life makes amends and chases the girl that got away with the help of new assistant, a thin Seth Rogen
Yes, it is what we hipsters would call Narm city. Yet this Judd Aptow directed flick is so self aware of the pitfalls that it not just avoids them for the most part but in a true stand up comic style calls them out. This is at its heart a very smart and aware film. What could have been Terms of Endearment with dick jokes turns into an occasionally funny and somewhat touching film. It is also a very real film about real people and I am going to repeat myself here but it is truly smart
The only real downside I see is that I really do not see myself watching this film again anytime soon. It is a great ride but it never reaches that next level. The movie consists of some very funny bits, but do not come aboard expecting belly laughs. In addition, while I found myself enjoying the laid back pace at 153 minutes there is no question this feels more like a directors cut than a tightly paced theatrical release.

“Sin City” Plot Summary
A film that explores the dark and miserable town Basin City and tells the story of three different people, all caught up in the violent corruption of the city.
Excellent movie
The movie is really great. Especially the thing about colors. The movie is black and white but somethings like the red dress, blue eyes of Alexis Bledel are colored, which i find very original. Also i realized that on the dancing scene in which Jessica Alba and Bruce Wills meet at the bar, the whole movie becomes colored. Even the least important roles are taken by very famous actors and actresses and the acting is very solid throughout the movie. When you combine all these with frank miller’s excellent scenario, one of the best movies ever is the result. I think that this movie deserves a higher rank in the top250 movies list.

“Death Race” Plot Summary
Ex-con Jensen Ames is forced by the warden of a notorious prison to compete in our post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory.
An amazing movie
Before watching this movie, I’ve never heard of it. I watched this title because it was a spur of the moment kind of thing. I had no idea what this movie was going to be about, and no idea what genre it is. This movie was action packed, thrilling, amazing in every shot. Every scene and every shot is purposeful and totally meant to be there. The cinematography is flawless. The only flaw is that it was too good. It seems like a movie that seems worth watching again, but when you do watch it again, it seems kind of repetitive, kind of like transformers. It seems like it would be a good movie to watch if you’re going to reminisce.

“The Informant!” Movie Review
“The Informant!” Plot Summary
The U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre.
Wow! What a ride; lot’s of memories The Informant!
The beauty of the film is Matt Damon without question. Starring in so many action/dramas of late, it’s great to see him going the comedy route. The guy was in Kevin Smith films and hammed it up in the Ocean’s movies as well, but here he has center stage to show the kind of chops he has in the genre. With hair resembling a bad toupee and a pedophilic moustache, his Whitacre is mid-90s businessman elite, only with a conscience sort of. A lover of crime films and courtroom dramas, he begins to live his life as though he is in one himself. When describing what is going on to the FBI at one point, he breaks out with the line, ‘It’s like Rising Sun, the Crichton novel,’ or during a voice-over he begins to compare everything to The Firm. He sees that his company, a corn producer and therefore having its hands in pretty much every consumer product on the market, is criminally involved with competitors to fix prices and steal from their respective publics. Wanting to be the hero and save the dayhopefully with an endgame of being the only person left and in effect handed the companyhe decides to fabricate a story to get the FBI in his sights and then pounces, taking part in a two year sting operation to bring Archer Daniels Midland down
Soderbergh was live and in person at the TIFF screening I attended and, after being introduced as having been there twenty years previous with his debut feature, said, ‘(There’s) no sex, no videotapes, but enough lies to last another twenty years.’ And boy was he right. As the movie progresses, you not only become aware of the lies being told in the company, but also the information Whitacre himself is withholding from the FBI, then from his lawyers, and inevitably from everyone. By the end, you can’t help but wonder what exactly was the truththe whole thing is just one big lie. I would love to know what the real Whitacre thinks about this representation. Does he enjoy the exaggerated caricature? Does he hate it because the imbecilic nature at the core of Damon’s role hits too close to home? The activities portrayed are so off the wall and zany that I have to believe screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and Soderbergh just used the outline of fact and made it completely their own. My only complaint would be that it goes maybe ten to twenty minutes too long, finding a repetition that soon becomes obvious and lacking of the witty charm of the start
With a cast of familiar faces and even some comic greatsThe Smothers Brothersit is still Damon that shines above all. His delivery is priceless and his facial expressions genuinely childlike in their enthusiasm. The entire film has him playing this game, unaware of how deep he was getting in and unaware that his extracurricular activities, to be exposed towards the end, made him a hypocrite. As long as he is the center of attention, being the man in the white hat taking down the bad guys with his FBI cohorts in tow, nothing else matters. Speaking of the agents, how great is it seeing Scott Bakula sinking his teeth into a lengthy role again? His straightman to Damon’s goof could not be played more perfectly. And then you get Joel McHale of ‘The Soup’ fame to play the most serious government agent in the world? It’s just Soderbergh having fun with preconceptions, actually casting many comics in serious roles while Jason Bourne himself schlubs around with a permanent cheesy smile plastered on his face
What transpires is funny enough, if just due to the fact a huge criminal investigation is occurring with a moron at its center, risking exposure every second. So excited that he is starring in his own version of all the sitcom television and pulp Hollywood movies he enjoys, the wonderment of having his own tape recorder hidden in his briefcase necessitates him to show someone how cool it is. He is 0014 after all, twice as smart as 007. But what works even better than the actual story is his mind itself. The epitome of Attention Deficit Disorder, Mark Whitacre loses his train of thought on a regular basis. At first you think you may be missing something as a character responds to a question and Damon’s voice-over drowns it out. While important information is being relayed, all we hear are the ramblings of a crazy man, the most mundane things popping into his head as he smiles and nods. Some of these one-liners are so great you almost watch what’s happening to get to the next tangent his brain wanders off towards
So, whether or not the film itself is an accurate portrayal of the subject matter it’s based on is a moot point. The real subject becomes finding out what will happen to Whitacre when the dust settles. Naive to the core, we all know he is due a wakeup call at some point, even if his FBI handlers think he is the bravest man in America doing it all because he has a wife and kids and a sense of moral responsibility. If only they knew he just did it for the rush of excitement and because he couldn’t think past step number one. Why comprehend that unearthing all the wheelings and dealings of a company he held a high position with could cost him his career when you can just enjoy the present and have fun living a duplicitous life? Do not feel sorry for him and do not question his motiveshe really doesn’t have any. Just take a seat and be ready to laugh hard.

“Brother Bear” Movie Review
“Brother Bear” Plot Summary
A young Inuit hunter seeks vengence against a bear, only to be magically changed into a bear himself, and his only chance to change back is with a talkative bear cub. add synopsis
A breath of fresh air.
No, it’s not one of those older Disney ‘classics,’ but I loved the film to death. It has believable characters, beautiful animation, a good storyline, decent music, and best of all (or at least, the most refreshing of all) is that its humour and dialogue aren’t overdone like you see so often. It has good messages and memorable scenes
As far as a plot overview, if you don’t want your children to see a ‘gorey’ movie, despite a lack of blood and apparent injury, you should stay away from this film. Within the first fifteen minutes, both the main character’s older brother and a bear die. The movie also accepts occult ideas concerning religion, as there are spirits that live in the sky rather than a single god (which are capable of creating great changes) and instances where it embraces the idea of karma. But overall, this movie is as cute and cuddly as the bears it follows. It won’t screw up your kids
The animation in this film is beautiful. I’m a fan of the old style of drawing it on paper, then inking, then painting, as opposed to all of this Pixar-style crap Disney’s been spewing out lately (and no, Pixar movies are good, but Disney CGI films are baaaad). This style is all but dead, and Brother Bear is supposedly the second to last film to be hand-drawn. Appreciate it
I admit that some of the music was a bid… odd. Phil Collins, being the main player in that department, does a decent job singing, but the lyrics were kind of, well, stupid. The best song is the one sung in Inuit, if that makes a difference
I don’t want to say more in case you’re reading this despite the spoiler warning. The bottom line is, this movie is great. I love it. It’s one of my favourite Disney movies, and trust me, it’s much better than you may think if you’re of the belief it’s just another ‘get rich quick’ film. Buy it, watch it with your kids, and enjoy it. You won’t be disappointed.

“Armageddon” Movie Review
“Armageddon” Plot Summary
When an asteroid the size of Texas is headed for Earth the world’s best deep core drilling team is sent to nuke the rock from the inside.
This just goes too far sometimes, but it’s good
I’ll say it straight out, this movie let me down quite a lot. I wanted an epic badass of a film that would revolutionize the way I see movies. I got an epic behemoth of a film with more then ample doses of goofy monkeying around inserted sometimes at the most inappropriate of scenes. Bruce Willis stars in this movie along with Ben Afleck and Liv Tyler as two young lovers, and it’s safe to say that there aren’t too many complaints with the acting (although admittedly there were some weak spots there, too).
No, my main problem with this movie is the comedy. Now, I’m all for comedy, but the directors of Armageddon didn’t seem to be taking their own plot too seriously at some point. I was in awe at the utter stupidity of the characters in this movie, especially toward the second half of it, and specifically Rockhound (Steve Buscemi, who does do a very good job acting here anyway). We all need some lighthearted fun in our movies, but what we don’t need is for the comedy to interfere with the dramatic parts of the movie, which it almost does a few times here. Rockhound’s foolishness and monkeying around almost ruins several scenes and it doesn’t fit with the whole theme of saving the Earth. Why did they even put the parts involving the stripper and then later the machine gun on the asteroid into the movie? It’s safe to tell who we can all throw rocks at for ruining the movie. Why on earth is he so lenient about it? It makes no sense. I can say the same thing for most of the crew at the beginning, too, they seem awfully laid back for a bunch of guys about to go save the world. Bear was falling asleep and making comments about a hot girl during the teaching sessions. What? Like I said, I like comedy fine, but here it just hinders what would otherwise be a phenomenal movie.
This movie is full of explosions (big explosions, too, we’re not talking about little buildings. We’re talking entire cities all at once here. That’s epic.), romantic love scenes, and other action clichГ©s. They’re actually done quite well, until we get Rockhound or Bear making more dumbass jokes. The whole mishmash makes Armageddon look like a PARODY of the action genre at some points, and it hurts the score. A lot. If I were to see this movie without any prior knowledge of action movies, and having never seen one before this, I would get a flawed first impression of the genre. It’s not quite to the level of Scary Movie and Date Movie, of course, but it’s not an upstanding example of how to incorporate comedy into an action movie. See Die Hard 3 or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for that. Sorry, but Armageddon just goes too far overboard sometimes.
No, I don’t hate this movie though. I do like it quite a lot. It’s great fun for a Saturday night with friends or if you’ve been drinking (lol). The ending scenes with Willis and Afleck are very touching, as are most of the scenes involving Liv Tyler. It’s also got some extremely triumphant moments, and the explosions and special effects are amazingly done. Check out those skies toward the end! The scenes with Chick (Will Patton) and his ex-wife and son are extremely touching, and are the saving grace of the quieter parts of the movie. Beautiful. And like I mentioned before, it’s EPIC. In all caps, too. There aren’t many other movies like this that can touch it in epic-ness. Not even Die Hard or it’s sequels are more epic than this monster of a film.
Recommended to action fans who can stand stupidity in their movie-viewing. I’ll be watching this one again, too.
