“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” Movie Review
“Lemony Snicket” Plot Summary
Three wealthy children’s parents are killed in a fire. When they are sent to a distant relative, they find out that he is plotting to kill them and seize their fortune.
The Marvellous Movie
It was wonderful. I’m sorry, skeptics, but it really was
The costumes were really unique. I liked how they seemed to draw inspiration from several different time periods
I really loved Liam Aiken and Emily Browning as Klaus and Violet Baudelaire- even though they didn’t fit my mental images of the characters, they proved themselves over and over again throughout the course of the film. Emily Browning has a history of doing excellent films, and after seeing her in the comparatively small role of Ned Kelly’s sister I had a lot of faith in her. I wasn’t quite as sure about Liam Aiken because I hadn’t seen any of his work, but I was pleasantly surprised
Sunny Baudelaire (as played by Kara and Shelby Hoffman) was just done perfectly. Everybody in the cinema laughed at the subtitles. I seriously didn’t think that it was possible for two-year-olds to be good at acting, but the Hoffman twins convinced me otherwise
The musical score was brilliantly done and the sets were, in a word, epic. I felt *dizzy* whenever there were panoramic shots of Lake Lachrymose, for heaven’s sakes! There were some scenes which were not in the books- such as the theme of sanctuary, the spyglasses, the lost letter from the Baudelaire parents. As a Lemony Snicket obsessive I expected to fume at these scenes, but they worked wonderfully
Keep an eye out for the hilarious ‘Littlest Elf’ sequence at the beginning and the amazing animated credits (complete with a song from the film ‘The Addams Family’, possibly a nod to Barry Sonnenfield, who is credited as a producer).
I am giving this film a 9 out of 10 simply because I am a fan of the books and there were a couple of story details I felt could have been communicated better
Excellent stuff! If there are any sequels, they can only improve.

“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” Movie Review
“Sweeney Todd” Plot Summary
The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.
Got me onside, surprisingly good
I am generally not a fan of musicals. I don’t like the artifice of singing dialogue moments. I have no problem with singing in a movie but this grates on me. Take Dreamgirls for instance. For the most part i was fine with it, good songs, performed as performances with a narrative structure surrounding them. However once of twice it had songs in place of dialogue where characters were discussing things amongst themselves or some such thing and i just got annoyed. And yes i dislike all the classics like West Side Story for this very reason
For about the first 20-30 minutes of Sweeney Todd I was having the same problem. This makes no bones about it being a musical. It’s not Rex Harrison speak-sing, it’s not staged songs in the middle of clumps of dialogue, it’s pretty much all singing. Everything. Every sentiment, every emotion, every plan, every aside. Yet after about 20 minutes or so i got used to it and went with it and then just appreciated the wonderful dark humour and sheer entertainment quality of it
Johnny Depp is great in the lead but he is complimented across the entire cast with Alan Rickman on fabulously villainous mode; Timothy Spall wonderfully revolting an Beadle Bamford – Rickman’s henchman; and Helena Bonham Carter hilariously off-centre with all the best lines. It also has a star making turn from a brilliant child actor, Edward Sanders. Much better than the now ubiquitous Freddie Highmore (who got his big break with Depp in Finding Neverland before rejoining him (with Burton) in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) he seems destined to have a great career potentially
The film’s greatest achievement however is how Burton has translated it to screen. This is a purely film musical. It never feels stagey. Unlike recent films like The Producers, Dreamgirls, Chicago which felt largely like they’d stuck a camera in a theatre and just filmed the show here Burton is brave enough to create a cinematic musical using all the tricks of his craft. That is never feels like it belongs anywhere but on a cinema screen is a huge testament to Burton’s skill in the translation and I hope the Academy is intelligent enough to recognise this come the Oscars next year
The dark humour is great, the look is stunning, Depp is gloriously unhinged while remaining believable. Even if, like me, you don’t generally like this type of musical i think you’ll get swept up in Sweeney Todd and enjoy it. Bravo Mr Burton.

“The Prestige” Movie Review
“The Prestige” Plot Summary
The rivalry between two magicians is exacerbated when one of them performs the ultimate illusion.
Great, epic film
This movie is an absolute masterpiece of epic proportions. Director Nolan gives us one of his best directing jobs. This movie contains everything from romance to pity, and power to poverty. Both Jackman and Bale play amazing characters. Bale is power hungry individual who stops at nothing short of owning and controlling everything in the world. This movie portrays the feelings and emotions of guilt and punishment. What is a great story and gripping account of what happens when dreams turn into nightmares
This is so much better than ‘The Illusionist’I also love the lack of profanity.

“Miami Vice” Movie Review
“Miami Vice” Plot Summary
Based on the 1980’s TV action/drama, this update focuses on vice detectives Crockett and Tubbs as their respective personal and professional lives become dangerously intertwined.
Impressive
The film jumps straight into the action and keeps viewers interested throughout on a two and a half hour roller-coaster ride. Although sometimes a strenuous story-line (concentration is needed to follow the plot) Foxx and Farrell provide excellent acting in an impressive action – flick. Good acting support is provided in a film which doesn’t just concentrate on action but touches on so much else. An improvement upon the already great Collateral, and a worthy successor to the original Miami Vice T.V series. With a mix of romance, beautiful settings, gorgeous vehicles, excellent fire-fights and inspirational acting – this is the film of the year so far. Mann has outdone himself.
