    “Dick Tracy” Movie Review

    “Dick Tracy” Plot Summary

The comic strip detective finds his life vastly complicated when Breathless Mahoney makes advances towards him while he is trying to battle Big Boy Caprice’s united mob.

Impressive, enjoyable comic book movie (spoilers)

Released in 1990, Warren Beatty’s take on a popular one-time comic book detective is at once successful and distinctive. It doesn’t have the preachy Americo-centric moralism of the ‘Superman’ movies, neither does it possess the dark and tragic depths of the early ‘Batman’ films. ‘Dick Tracy’ is distinctive as it just tries to be what it is: a literal live action comic strip. In this the cops headed up by a straight-laced detective (and his plucky kid sidekick) are the heroes, with a horde of ugly, scheming gangsters as the villains

In a town simply named The City, Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty) is an honest but reckless detective who divides his time between chasing villains and going out with his girlfriend Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly). He finds himself a new sidekick in the shape of the Kid (Charlie Korsmo), a homeless young thief he pulls off the streets. Tracy will need all the help he can get, as his arch-nemesis Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) is on the rise. He’s just rubbed out his main rival Lips Manlis (Paul Sorvino), taken over his club and stolen his girlfriend, singer Breathless Mahoney (Madonna). Now he’s preparing for a rampage that will ensure him complete control of The City…..Take the story out of the movie and it would make a fine period melodrama. There are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting for the bulk of it’s two-hour running length. The script mixes a healthy stock of comic book characters (hard-nosed cop, honest sweetheart, streetwise kid, mean ugly gangster and attractive but sleazy moll) and has the standard surprise ending. This is combined with a show of action scenes (featuring cement baths, punch-ups and tommy gun shoot-outs) but in keeping with the pictures lighthearted tone, there is nothing gory or explicit

The setting and technical aspect is especially good in this film. The use of primary colours in both the backdrops, sets and costumes is brilliant and makes the whole film really come alive. Enhancing this is a wonderful music score, put to good use in both the action scenes and the quieter, more sentimental moments. Even Madonna’s songs fit in well with the picture, as they’re cleverly used in ways that bring the story forward and add irony to key scenes. The performances are for the most part excellent. Warren Beatty is on form as eponymous detective and he works well in tangent with Charlie Korsmo as The Kid, who is both his partner and surrogate son. If the film has a recurring weakness, it’s in the lack of chemistry between him and leading lady Glenne Headly. There is certainly more discernible tension in scenes between him and Madonna, who turns in a good performance as the scheming, gangster’s moll. She is certainly no Oscar-winner, but neither is she the wooden disaster so many make her out to be

The cast of prosthetics-clad gangsters reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of vintage character actors: Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Paul Sorvino, William Forsythe, James Tolkan, etc. The outstanding performance here, though, is Al Pacino as Big Boy. Usually known for his more serious portrayal of villains in films like ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ it is a delight watching him go gleefully over the top here. Big Boy is deluded, cruel and arrogant and makes a worthy adversary for Tracy

Not one of the most well-known comic book films going around, but it is still a joy to watch.

    “Top Gun” Plot Summary

The macho students of an elite US Flying school for advanced fighter pilots compete to be best in the class, and one romances the teacher.

    Fun, entertaining and unbelievable!

Most of the comments about this movie are more unbelievable than the picture itself. Some are saying it’s the greatest movie which is far from true. On the other side are the cinema snobs who won’t let themselves enjoy this motion picture. This movie may require much more ’suspension of disbelief ‘ than most but the fact that many are still enjoying it says plenty about its entertainment value.

“Back to the Future” Movie Review

“Back to the Future” Plot Summary

In 1985, Doc Brown invents time travel; in 1955, Marty McFly accidentally prevents his parents from meeting, putting his own existence at stake.

    the best 80s film ever.

This film is just one of a kind. The charm and wit are so good it will have you wonder how they came up with such a concept, Michael J Fox is at his best as are the rest of the cast. Humour, comedy, science fiction, this film has it all. This film will remain timeless,I would urge anyone who loves films to add this one to their list now. The special effects are still great looking and look far better then most effects today, your heart will still be in your mouth when Marty races towards the clock tower in a bid to get struck by lightning, this is a film you will watch again and again and will always put a smile on your face.

“Back to the Future Part III” Movie Review

“Back to the Future 3″ Plot Summary

Enjoying a peaceable existence in 1885, Doctor Emmet Brown is about to be killed by Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen. Marty McFly travels back in time to save his friend. add synopsis

If the me of the future is now in the past…

This is the best of the three Back to the Future movies. Two was a hodgepodge impossible to follow without a ’schematic’, but this one is enjoyable on all levels. No fancy anything, just a few good actors in a lovely part of the country enjoying their time together and producing a really good film for the rest of us.

The lighting and cinematography are great, the historical details interesting, the plot fun, and the geography just plain confusing. What’s with ‘Devil’s Tower’ in the background of the drive in? Isn’t that like, somewhere in Nevada or something? It sure would be, ‘a hell of a long hike back to Hill Valley!’ Oh well, who cares? Marty has also gained some weight swooshing through the time portal this go around, but again, who cares? Michael Fox has said that ‘living happened’ between the production of these three movies, his son was born, his father died…he must have been thinking about time indeed.

Thank you all who made this excellent film.

“Back to the Future Part II” Movie Review

“Back to the Future 2″ Plot Summary

After visiting 2015, Marty McFly must repeat his visit to 1955 to prevent disastrous changes to 1985… without interfering with his first trip. add synopsis

    The best sequel ever made

Continuing a movie as perfect as ‘Back To The Future’ must have been a really tough job. What made it even harder was that the writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale had to ignore an important character from part one. Because Crispin Glover asked for too much money, his character George McFly, Marty’s wacky Dad, hardly appears in the sequels, which constricted the storyline a lot beforehand.

Still, ‘Back To The Future II’ turned out to be a huge success, commercially and artistically. The movie is every bit as clever and delightful as part one. I think most viewers don’t realize how extremely complex this story is, because it’s so enjoyable to watch. Gale & Zemeckis wrote a screenplay that takes place in three different periods of time, changes storyline more than once, has characters interacting with themselves all the time, but never seems overdone or confusing. The most original trick the two Bobs pulled was to virtually return to part one and have the main character interfere with the original storyline. I don’t think that has ever been done before or since.

No, the movie isn’t flawless in a sense that everything can be explained logically. Bob Gale admitted himself that Marty and Doc shouldn’t be able to visit their future selves in the first place. There are a lot of impossible time travels in part two (you can read about them in detail here: http://mjyoung.net/time/back2.html). ‘Mistakes’ like that don’t take away any of the fun, though, and I still think that the ‘Back To The Future’ trilogy incorporates the logics of time traveling better than any other movie ever did.

Besides the perfect script the trilogy’s success is due to Zemeckis ever so beautiful direction and his eye for detail, and of course the great cast. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Thomas F. Wilson and Lea Thompson, all shamelessly underrated actors, are once again brilliant. It’s a REAL pity that Crispin Glover didn’t return for the sequels, but as I’ve said before, Gale & Zemeckis did a great job writing their way around his memorable character. The only other actress that didn’t come back was Claudia Wells, who played Jennifer in part one and was appropriately replaced by Elisabeth Shue here.

Summing up, ‘Back To The Future II’ is a more than worthy follow-up to one of the best movies of all time. In fact, I think it’s the best sequel ever made, only rivaled by ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’. But that’s a different story…
