“Alien” 1979 by Ridley Scott – Movie Review

“Alien” is a break-through film. A sensation on the battlefield for the moviegoers’ money. The movie which, along with several other movies shot in the late 70’s – early 80’s, defined the mainstream for many years (I would also mention that the era of “Alien” is not over yet, although it is close to its sunset as never before).

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver)

Ellen Riplay (Sigourney Weaver)

Gothic story in futuristic surroundings convincingly dusted by the wind of time (the interiors of the ship were artificially “aged”) sets the highest standards for the genre of space sci-fi. And a few have managed to surpass it. To tell the truth only James Cameron was able to do better in the “Aliens”.

Originally the screenwriter Dan O’Bannon was thinking about the storyline of gremlins spreading havoc on board the B-17 bomber. Later B-17 turned into a small starship named “Snark” with exclusively male crew. But the producers insisted that two women be included in the crew, and one of them should defeat the main villain. Time has shown that it was the right decision. Seemingly fragile but strong Ripley became the second – after her toothy enemy – most important symbol of the “Alien” cult universe.

According to the original intent the dying alien would scratch a triangle on the dashboard. Searching his ship the people from “Nostromo” would find a stone pyramid nearby with the aliens eggs. This idea was never implemented (though Giger did the necessary sketches), but the idea of the pyramid was finally used in the “Aliens v. Predator” movie.

    “Lord of War” Movie Review

    “Lord of War” Plot Summary

An arms dealer confronts the morality of his work as he is being chased by an Interpol agent.

A ‘Stylish’ Look At Arms Dealing

This was a very pleasant surprise, far better than I had ever hoped, filled with fabulous cinematography and riveting story about the life of arms dealer during the 1980s and ’90s

It was an interesting film, to say the least, and Nicholas Cage was terrific as the lead character, ‘Yuri Orlov.’ I loved his narration, too. How much of what he said is true, I have no idea, but it’s fascinating stuff. Don’t believe a lot of it, even when they tell you it is ‘based’ on true events. Most of still can (and usually) is made up for dramatic purposes

I felt those visuals, combined with the outstanding acting and always-interesting story made this a good film. It also proved you don’t need action every two minutes to keep a film involving for the audience. This has just the right amount of drama, suspense, action, romance and, yes, even humor. With all the political comments made here in the narration I was wondering if I was going to hear the typical Democrat whine and sure enough, late in the film a comment is made regarding the 2000 elections. The liberals still can’t get over losing, fair and square. They just can’t accept that. This is about the fifth time I’ve heard this in 2007 films although at least time, the guy making the absurd statement was the Liberian dictator…..but it really was the film maker, of course. Despite that, and the very pessimistic storyline that evil always wins in the world. According to Bible of ‘Yuri,’ in the end, the meek won’t inherit the earth; the arms dealers will and that evil rules, so why fight it and yourself over it. Wow, what uplifting words to live by. Outside of Yuri’s wife ‘Ava’ (Bridget Moynahan) and the man who pursues him, ‘Jack Valentine’ (Ethan Hawke) no one in here has much in the way of high-ground morals. At least they made the lawman an honest; that’s rare in films today. Jared Leto plays Cage’s brother ‘Vitaly’ and plays his standard slime-ball character. Wow, this guy is becoming the male Jennifer Jason Leigh, regarding sleazy roles. Everyone was solid in here, from the Americans to the Russians the Africans….and all intriguing people. Ian Holm as rival arms dealer ‘Simeon Weisz’ deserves mention

Amir Mokri is the cinematographer and Andrew Niccol, the director, who combined to make this movie look so stylish and beautiful to see. Looking at Mokri’s resume, I see he’s done a number of stylish films. Niccol hasn’t directed much but what he has also offers interesting visuals

Looking at the front and back cover of the DVD might make you think this is just another of these brainless action flicks, but it is not. This is solid film.

    “Batman Begins” Movie Review

    “Batman Begins” Plot Summary

The story of how Bruce Wayne became what he was destined to be: Batman.

    Excellent Batman

‘Batman Begins’ is certainly the best among the five movies of this great hero released in the theaters. After 1776 reviews in IMDb, I do not know what I can write that have not been written before. In my opinion, this film begins wonderful with the director, Christopher Nolan, of the fantastic ‘Memento’, one of my favorite movies. The cast is a constellation, composed of excellent actors and actress: Christian Bale is awesome in the role of the troubled and confused Bruce Wayne; Michael Caine, as Alfred, elegant, gentle and tough, is also perfect; Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Tom Wilkinson, Hutger Hauer are very evil bad guys; Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman complete this lovely cast. The special effects are very good, and the cinematography recalls ‘Blade Runner’, with rainy and dark locations. The story explains the origins of Batman since his childhood in Gotham City. The soundtrack fits perfectly to the scenes. It is amazing to see that there are bad reviews of this movie, which is a very above average entertainment. My vote is nine

    “The Box” Plot Summary

A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who know that opening it will grant them a million dollars and kill someone they don’t know.

    Would you press the button??

You have to see the whole movie to understand it, and get the concept that the movie is trying to convey to the viewer. To me I think it is an excellent movie. The movie would send primary questions like: Would you take the appealing move even if you have to kill somebody on the way?, or Would you take the next exit without taking in consideration that you will result in the fatal accident in the rear view mirror? The only bad thing in this movie is the unnecessary stretching of the story, which is attributed to the short story it is based on. The movie deserves a 7-7.5 points, but I had to use a 10 point vote because of the unfair judgment in some of the comments I have reviewed. So, Would you press the button??

The Dark Knight —- Best Batman Movie Ever.

I have just come out of the ‘Dark Curtain’ Screening for The Dark Knight in Adelaide, and I’m blown away.

Nolan’s directing is sublime, the pacing of the movie was so well kept, managing to keep the audience enthralled in an almost 3 hour movie. There were several shots in the film that had me saying ‘Now how in the hell did they do that?!’, Brilliant scores by James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer. Every actor shines, no one person steals the film. I don’t want to say much about it, because whatever is said cannot do it justice, there is enough hype surrounding it’s release, but it’s there for a reason. Top Notch film. Bravo to Nolan and his crew for giving a movie that Batman truly deserves.

    9/10.

“The Day After Tomorrow” Plot Summary

A climatologist tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. He must get to his young son in New York, which is being taken over by a new ice age.

    Very Good Film!

This film is one of the better films of this decade. The best part of the film is the effects. They were utterly amazing. Dennis Quaid and Jake G. are father and son who gets caught in the worst storm the earth has seen since the last ice age. They battle their strengths and weaknesses to survive this storm. As I mentioned above, the effects were outstanding. I liked the tornadoes in LA part the best. The acting is superb especially with Quaid. Not to sound so political, the theme is a real-life issue. Global warming is a big problem with the earth’s environment. I am surprised about all the negative reviews about this film. I guess critics dislike just about everything these days. I recommend this film to everyone. I rate this film a 10/10.

    “Ratatouille” Movie Review

    “Ratatouille” Plot Summary

Remy is a young rat in the French countryside who arrives in Paris, only to find out that his cooking idol is dead. When he makes an unusual alliance with a restaurant’s new garbage boy, the culinary and personal adventures begin despite Remy’s family’s skepticism and the rat-hating world of humans.

GREAT addition to the Pixar family of films…

I attended a sneak preview of Ratatouille, and I have to say, Pixar has done it again. I enjoyed Cars, but didn’t LOVE it like some of the other Pixar Films (Monsters Inc and The Incredibles are my favorites). This movie, however, was just about perfect. If I had one complaint (and it’s VERY small) it was a just a little too long, but not by much. But the voices, the computer animation, the music, and above all the story were all top notch. I’m continually amazed at how Pixar continues to crank out great films like these that both children and adults can appreciate. I have a feeling most critics and film goers alike will rate this one very high. I wholeheartedly recommend the film – it really was a fun night out at the movies! Congrats Pixar!! Oh, and they also continue to do wonderful shorts that appear before the feature. This one involving aliens(that’s all I’ll say) is really cute and continues that fine tradition

    Can’t wait for the DVD!

    The Diva Cult

This is one of my Favorite Films of All Time . It contains all the elements necessary to keep me coming back time after time . The look of the film is extraordinary . Every scene is stunning . And then there’s the futuristic element . I love all things Sci – Fi . Humor comes next . This film is damn funny . And it never gets stale . Chris Tucker is a scream as Ruby Rhod . His manic , over the top persona made him an instant star if he wasn’t already .

The enigmatic Diva . She who has launched 1000 web sites . We want to know everything about her . Who is she in real life ? Where can you get that wonderful song ? She’s nothing less than thrilling . Thankfully there’s a new DVD of The Fifth Element that explains many aspects of the Diva as well as the rest of the movie . I highly recommend it .

But there’s one thing that’s missing . Not a complaint exactly . Maybe I really don’t want to know . So if you know don’t tell me . What in the world is with the Chocolate Syrup that drips down your face when you come in contact with the Super Evil force ? That is weird squared . So enjoy The Fifth Element and Bosco for everyone !

    hong kong movies rock!

first of all understand what you are going to see: a ‘hong kong’ movie.if you don’t keep that in mind, you will not like it and criticize it or even worse compare it to a Hollywood made movie like saving private ryan. it’s like going to the MOMA and trying comparing an impressionist and a cubist.and as a ‘hong kong’ movie, it’s great. just great.the characters are painted black and white. the war scenes are exaggerated and truculent. and in this crazy scenario the path to redemption of men from different places and different races and cultures that must join their resources to survive.again, to be seen, as long as you understand what you’re watching.

    “RocknRolla” Plot Summary

In London, a real-estate scam puts millions of pounds up for grabs, attracting some of the city’s scrappiest tough guys and its more established underworld types, all of whom are looking to get rich quick. While the city’s seasoned criminals vie for the cash, an unexpected player — a drugged out rock ‘n’ roller presumed to be dead but very much alive — has a multi-million dollar prize fall into his hands.

    Guy Ritchie at his best

Guy Ritchie’s career has run red hot and ice cold over the yrs. Guy’s unique European gangster movies know how to have fun. Really cool violence w/ really cool lines

Guy Ritchie busted out w/ cult gangster faves Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Then Madonna drained his awesome storytelling w/ Swept Away. Then came weak Revolver. Madonna wrecked one of my fave directors

I put off seeing RocknRolla and I regret it. Guy Ritchie is back! Every BLEEPING thing I love about his movies came back in a wave. Unforgettable characters, bad a** story, cool lines, and plenty of action to boot. He did get help from two BLEEPING great actors. Mark Strong ‘Archy’ and Toby Kebbell ‘Johnny Quid’If you gave up on Guy Ritchie come back. RocknRolla will win you over.
