“Legends of the Fall” Plot Summary
Epic tale of three brothers and their father living in the remote wilderness of 1900s USA and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war, and love.
Comedy for the ages
One of the top comedies of the 1990s. Unintentionally, of course. There’s really no other way to take it. Yes, the cinematography is fine. As for the rest … Anthony Hopkins channels Popeye. Brad Pitt channels his hair (I wasn’t aware long, flowing locks were all the rage among officers of the Great War). The sheer heavy-handedness and predictability of the story. … Seriously, when I saw this in the theater, I burst out laughing several times — most notably, the ludicrous scene involving the barbed wire and the machine gun. Hard to believe this is the work of the same director who made ‘Glory’ and ‘Courage Under Fire.’

“Mission Impossible” Plot Summary
An American agent, under false suspicion of disloyalty, must discover and expose the real spy without the help of his organization.
The best of the three
An engaging piece of Cold War histrionics set in fine motion by DePalma and his stellar entourage of fine actors. To me, it stands far ahead of the two sequels, primarily because it is more subtle and cerebral and less visceral than the others. The cast itself is not laden with merely young hot-shot actors inserted into screenplays for box office appeal. Rather, it is almost too politically correct in its casting as all the demographics seem to be represented here: young, old, Black, White, male, female, American, European etc. Yet each of the principals and the supporting cast fits into his/her respective role quite well, with little wasted motion. It’s as if they each have their own ‘raison d’etre’ as it pertains to the overall story line
The sophisticated spy-vs.-spy plot line is not only enhanced by the thespian talent, but also the inventive camera work that allows us to revisit ‘flashbacks’ of prior scenes that are taken from perspectives other than the original. To wit, the Jon Voight bridge scene gets a few once-overs, if you will. Also, the European locales are well shot with no gratuitous indulgence, which helps to embellish the story line. Lest I forget, a sweet job by Danny Elfman adapting Lalo Schiffrin’s ‘MI’ theme to the soundtrack, especially during the ending credits where he shifts the theme’s normal 5/4 tempo to a funkier, bluesier 4/4 time signature!Tom Cruise takes a nice turnabout from some of his earlier more ‘cutesy’ roles. His role here demands of him technical expertise as well as strength of character in order for him to merely stay alive. J. Voight and V. Redgrave are in fine form in their complex and beguiling portrayals
In summary, this episode of the ‘MI’ series characterizes what I consider to be a triumph of substance over form, of subtlety over the obvious. Maybe this attitude is a ‘no-no’ for modern audiences, but it remains one philosophy that I will always endorse.

“Gangs of New York” Plot Summary
In 1863, Amsterdam Vallon returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against Bill the Butcher, his father’s killer.
Gruesome, Yet Very Good!
When I saw this movie, I was both grossed out and amazed. It’s a beautiful movie. The cinematography is very well done, and the acting is very good, too. DiCaprio gives a very good performance, and Diaz strays beyond her usual ‘pretty-girl’ roll, and does it very well. Day-Lewis’s character is very dynamic and Henry Thomas does a very good performance as DiCaprio’s friend. Just a warning for those who haven’t seen this movie: if you don’t like to watch very bloody fight scenes or watch people die in some pretty uncomfortable ways, don’t see this. The movie is very rough and seems exaggerated. All the same, I like it a lot.

“Dreamcatcher” Plot Summary
Friends on a camping trip discover that the town they’re vacationing in, is being plagued in an unusual fashion by parasitic aliens from outer space. add synopsis
Well-adapted Stephen King story.
At first glance, Lawrence Kasdan might seem an odd choice to be directing a slasher/science fiction movie based on a Stephen King novel. But the story revolves around a group of friends who grew up together and who are having an adventure in the woods, albeit with an extraterrestrial, so it works out quite well. William Goldman also wrote the screenplay, so this film has a good pedigree
The four friends grew up together in a small Maine town, and what binds them to one another is their encounter with saving a retarded boy, Duddits, from being tormented by the school jocks. Duddits isn’t what he appears to be, however, and through their friendship, the four acquire extra-sensory powers – being able to read other people’s minds, being able to find lost things, etc
The four guys are out on their annual getaway in the Maine woods when a lost hunter staggers into their cabin one day. He’s sick, though, and in due course it’s revealed that he’s been infected by some alien organism, which resembles a large wormlike creature that has grown inside him. It escapes and kills one of them, and then the extraterrestrial appears and takes over the body of the remaining guy (the other two were off on a beer run).
The film is about stopping the alien from taking over the Earth. Its plan is to deposit these worm creatures in the reservoir that provides Boston’s drinking water, so that they can infect the population and multiply. The alien hits a snag, though, because he’s using the body of a man who can communicate through ESP, and his remaining friends realize what’s going on and set out to stop him
One of the flaws in the movie comes about with the introduction of Morgan Freeman and Tom Sizemore at this point. They play the leaders of some special ops force whose job it is to track and eliminate extraterrestrials. It was necessary for the story to advance to have the presence of this military unit, however, it didn’t make sense to have the two best known actors in the film chewing up unnecessary scenery. Lesser knowns would have worked better and these characters roles subdued
I won’t spoil the ending here, but overall I thought this was a pretty entertaining film.

“Tombstone” Plot Summary

Easily the best film I’ve seen in a month
A public service announcement to anyone that hasn’t seen this movie: Watch it now! I just saw it for the first time, and it’s easily the best movie I’ve seen in months
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but, in my opinion, characters are likely the most important aspect of a film. That said, the characters here couldn’t be better, each one has their own distinct personality, they all have moments to shine and, most importantly, they are all superbly acted. Top honours in that category go, of course, to Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. Simply one of the best characters ever to grace the screen, no more needs to be said. Kurt Russell also did a very good job as celebrated lawman Wyatt Earp. The supporting cast are great as well, but these two certainly stand out…especially Kilmer
I wont get in to how great the plot is so that I don’t spoil it. I’ll just leave it at this: it’s an enthralling story that will keep you glued from beginning to end, surprise you at times, and even saves time to make you laugh. Very well written, very well played out. Even the music is great, which is something that I often overlook
In conclusion, I’m a huge western fan. In fact, next to horror, I’d have to say they are my favourite genre of film. Despite being fairly recent, this film ranks among the best and has certainly earned it’s spot as one of my favourite films.9/10

“Shakespeare in Love” Movie Review
“Shakespeare in Love” Plot Summary
A young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.
This movie is my favorite film of all time.
The first time I went to see ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ I went because the commercials on television were hilarious. So, I went to see it opening day (Christmas), but that isn’t extremely special because I see movies on holidays as a rule. When I left the theatre, I was in love with the film, and the more I thought about the more I loved it. Later that day, I went to see ‘The Prince of Egypt’ and ‘Stepmom.’ Really bad and decent, respectively. I thought of them in comparison to ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ and they got worse and worse and ‘Shakespeare in Love’ got better and better
And why shouldn’t it? Gwyneth Paltrow turns out an amazing performance especially since she is using an accent, speaking in verse, and playing four parts (Viola, Thomas, Romeo, and Juliet). She is also phenomenal in the way she can switch from being horridly funny to evoking tears. Joseph Fiennes no less of an actor than she. He brings such life to someone seen as a god to many and he is so believable as this writing giant. Geoffery Rush is absolutely hilarious as Mr. Henslowe. I must say that he will make you roll in the aisles. Then of course there is Judi Dench, who has a meek 8 and a half minutes of screentime but is so awesome that she won Best Supporting Actress. And last, there is Ben Affleck, who also has a small role as Ned Alleyn (the prima donna of the group), but will make you laugh so hard that you will beg for mercy. I’m really not kidding, he has the best lines
Now, if performances aren’t enough to make you see it, there are the costumes. Or the music. The music has to be one of the best scores I’ve ever heard. Or there’s the fights (yes, there are fights in a Shakespearean film), which are hilarious, tense, and full of suspense
So, if I’ve been able to laugh at every joke all fourteen (yes, you read it correctly, 14) times that I’ve seen ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ I think you’ll enjoy it at least once.

“There Will Be Blood” Movie Review
“There Will Be Blood” Plot Summary
A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.
The best film of the year. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen.
There Will Be Blood is a story about greed, religion and vengeance due to the discovery of one of nature’s riches: OIL!Daniel Plainview(Daniel Day-Lewis) is a poor silver miner who is injured and taken in by a few men digging for oil. When one of them dies in a freak accident, Daniel brings up the man’s son as his own and becomes a self-made oil tycoon in the process. After receiving a tip-off that a seemingly impoverished town out west has a whole ocean of oil beneath the surface, Plainview rushes there and stops at nothing to get what he wants. Even if it means losing all the things most important to him, especially his SANITY. It was written for the screen and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who also directed Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love. This is definitely a far better than the two. He should get a Best Director Nod for his work. The music is unlike anything ever I’ve ever heard, and it completely drew me into the haunting mood of the movie. The movie will get a lot of Oscar Nominations, hopefully Best Picture but most importantly:Best Actor. Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably the most talented living actor and his performance here clinches that title in my opinion. At first, you see how Plainview goes from being an extremely charismatic individual to a dark, insane and vicious oilman. Day-Lewis perfects all of these characteristics to a T and no other performance this year is even in the same league as this one. The movie is about 2 hours and 40 minutes long but it certainly didn’t feel like it when I watched it. Actually, I would’ve been happier if the movie was 3 1/2 hours. It was that good. I was simply enthralled by this work of art. It is the best movie of the year with the best performance of the year.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” Movie Review
“It’s a Wonderful Life” Plot Summary
An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would have been like if he never existed.
The fable still holds up
I just re-watched this film with my family as an annual Christmas tradition (first time on DVD though). I have to say, despite the 10-11 times i’ve seen this, it still holds up with magnificent strength and emotion. The scenes where Bailey has ‘never been born’ with Clarence the angle and the triumphant concluding scene in Stewart’s house where all his friends come to his aid are famous beyond comparison, but still are mesmerizing and emotional. What often is overlooked is the mountain of great dialogue in this film. Barrymore and Stewart have so many great lines-’I'm and old man and most people hate me, but I don’t like them either’; ‘Oh, why don’t you stop annoying people!’; ‘Is it too much to ask that people can live their lives with a few nice rooms and a bath and not have to live in your slums? We need this run-down old building just so there can be somewhere people can go and not crawl to Potter.’ Jimmy Stewart gives one of THE performances of all time as the ultimate put-upon good guy George Bailey. All he wants to do is get out of Bedford Falls, travel the world and go to college. But, because of a string of coincidences and occurences where George puts others above himself, he ends up never leaving the town. Donna Reed is his loving wife Mary, who waits around for George to realize that he loves her. This situation leads to one of the most touching and romantic scenes on film, where as the plastic magnate Sam Wainwright talks to George and Mary on the same phone, they look into each other’s eyes and you see the what they truly feel for eachother. George grabs Mary, saying ‘I don’t wanna get married to anyone anywhere at anytime’, but he is cut off in the middle of his speech by the emotion, and they embrace. Rob Reiner claims he can’t watch or discuss this scene without tearing up. How Stewart and Reed didn’t win Oscars for this scene alone is unthinkable. Also, Lionel Barrymore is great as the evil Mr. Potter (with his wheelchair pilot/crony, Potter is the predecessor to everyone from the Beatles ‘Mean Mr. Mustard’ to Mr. Burns on ‘The Simpsons’)-who you believe is just a mean old man at the beginning, but then when he gives his final major speech to Stewart you realize what a twisted and cruel monster he truly is. The director, Frank Capra, must also be given credit when praising this film. He directs the actors and frames them in such a way that the true relationships and actions between them are so much more meaningful. He really knew what he was doing when making this film. The make-up and lighting department also successfully show the wear of 18 years on the principle actors-this movie takes place with the same actors from the period of 1928-1946, and Reed’s and Stewart’s make-up jobs are extremely convincing. Some great moments: The close-ups of Stewarts face when 1.) He lears if he doesn’t take over the Bailey Building and Loan, the board of trustees will vote with Potter and drive the institution out of business, and 2.) In the fantasy scenes, where he runs away from ‘Ma Bailey’s Boarding House’ and realizes that not even his own mother regognizes him. The speech Bailey gives condemning Mr. Potter after Pa Bailey’s death and Potter’s appeal to liquidate the Building and Loan. A young George Bailey reveals to the pharmacist Mr. Gower that because he was so grief-stricken over the death of his son that he put the wrong medicine in the wrong tablet, and the look from Gower when he realizes that if not for Bailey, he would have done a terrible, terrible thing (this moment always gives me goosebumps). The look of disgust and horror on Stewart’s face after shaking Potter’s hand after being offered a job, then wiping his hand on his jacket-symbolising his realization that if he had agreed to work for Potter, he would have been selling his soul to the devil. This scene is followed by the wonderfully tender moment between Stewart and Reed where he stares at her in the dark as she tells him she is pregnant. Capra’s greatest gift to the common man, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ still holds up beautifully. It is a morality tale with a timeless message that no man is poor who has friends. It’s the ultimate happy ending, and the ultimate Christmas story.

“A.I.” Plot Summary
A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become “real” so that he can regain the love of his human mother.
I liked it
I thought A.I. was a very good film. I’m sure it is somewhat different from what Kubrick had thought but he and Spielberg had worked on it for a long time. I liked the questions that it posed about such as what does it mean to be a being? Does the boy robot have genuine feelings or are they programmed? But we as people do we have genuine feelings or are they ‘programmed’ in our genetic code, by society, and by other factors? Intriguing questions from an intriguing film. Definitely a thinking persons movie. The acting by Haley Joel Osmet was outstanding and the supporting cast was equally good, too. The portrayal of the future was somewhat frightening but also extremely fascinating. Especially the ending of the film. I saw this film with my brother who’s first word when the film ended was ‘Wow!’ He only expresses that for films he really likes. Those who like science fiction and those who like films that make them think definitely see this film. Even if you are not as impressed as I am you will find parts of the film fascinating.
