“The Talented Mr. Ripley” Movie Review

“The Talented Mr. Ripley” Plot Summary

In late 1950’s New York, Tom Ripley, a young underachiever, is sent to Europe to retrieve a rich and spoiled millionaire playboy, named Dickie Greenleaf. But when the errand fails, Ripley takes extreme measures.

    Elegant, literary thriller

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY Aspect ratio: 1.85:1Sound formats: Dolby Digital / DTSWhilst in Italy, a young American chancer (Matt Damon) assumes the identity of a wealthy playboy (Jude Law) with whom he’s become emotionally obsessed, leading to murder and betrayal on a grand scale

Elegant, literary thriller based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (the subject of an earlier adaptation, PLEIN SOLEIL, in 1960), in which sociopathic anti-hero Tom Ripley (Damon) cheats, steals and murders his way to a position of huge good fortune, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake. Set against the backdrop of tourist Italy – encompassing Rome and Venice and all points in between – Anthony Minghella’s film is a compelling treat from start to finish, layering detail upon detail as Damon’s friendship with Law blossoms and sours, leading to an inevitable plot twist which introduces a whole new set of complications for the central characters, rendering the audience complicit in Ripley’s escalating crime wave

Damon may seem a little too young and unworldly for such a complex character, but he judges the role with great sensitivity, especially in those scenes where (overtly or otherwise) he indicates a sexual attraction to Law which goes unreciprocated (or does it?), until the characters are driven apart by jealousy, bitterness and – ultimately – violence. His fantasies shattered by harsh reality, Damon finds solace in the arms of a mutual acquaintance (Jack Davenport), the only person capable of taking Law’s place in Damon’s affections, only for their chance of happiness to be snatched away by a cruel trick of fate. Terrific, Oscar-caliber support by Gwyneth Paltrow and Philip Seymour Hoffman (as Law’s fiancee and best friend, respectively); beautiful, classy production values throughout. Followed by RIPLEY’S GAME (2002).

“Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” Movie Review

“Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” Plot Summary

After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.

    good.

beautiful film. As to the usual one, the usual negative comments which talk about a classical film some years 80 which everyone does not like it to the nostalgic ones are met

Sure Heros that this film had to have a judgment in this site. In fact reviewers’ good part has put a high vote to the previous episodes. Because this contrast? I know the reason. Since assumptive reviewers’ good part favorably sees the past and as the past is ‘better’ than the present they have given several credit to the preceding episodes being still the last episode more explosive and spectacular. At this point should reject also the old episodes but there are here two weights and two measure

In fact also cinema masterpieces have been criticized and denigrated. Good part some reviewers of this site belong to the very bad reviewers. Better think separately with its head.

    “Shakespeare in Love” Movie Review

    “Shakespeare in Love” Plot Summary

A young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.

This movie is my favorite film of all time.

The first time I went to see ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ I went because the commercials on television were hilarious. So, I went to see it opening day (Christmas), but that isn’t extremely special because I see movies on holidays as a rule. When I left the theatre, I was in love with the film, and the more I thought about the more I loved it. Later that day, I went to see ‘The Prince of Egypt’ and ‘Stepmom.’ Really bad and decent, respectively. I thought of them in comparison to ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ and they got worse and worse and ‘Shakespeare in Love’ got better and better

And why shouldn’t it? Gwyneth Paltrow turns out an amazing performance especially since she is using an accent, speaking in verse, and playing four parts (Viola, Thomas, Romeo, and Juliet). She is also phenomenal in the way she can switch from being horridly funny to evoking tears. Joseph Fiennes no less of an actor than she. He brings such life to someone seen as a god to many and he is so believable as this writing giant. Geoffery Rush is absolutely hilarious as Mr. Henslowe. I must say that he will make you roll in the aisles. Then of course there is Judi Dench, who has a meek 8 and a half minutes of screentime but is so awesome that she won Best Supporting Actress. And last, there is Ben Affleck, who also has a small role as Ned Alleyn (the prima donna of the group), but will make you laugh so hard that you will beg for mercy. I’m really not kidding, he has the best lines

Now, if performances aren’t enough to make you see it, there are the costumes. Or the music. The music has to be one of the best scores I’ve ever heard. Or there’s the fights (yes, there are fights in a Shakespearean film), which are hilarious, tense, and full of suspense

So, if I’ve been able to laugh at every joke all fourteen (yes, you read it correctly, 14) times that I’ve seen ‘Shakespeare in Love,’ I think you’ll enjoy it at least once.

    “Hook” Movie Review

    “Hook” Plot Summary

When Capt. Hook kidnaps his children, an adult Peter Pan must return to Neverland and reclaim his youthful spirit in order to challenge his old enemy.

    Love it !

Love the cast first of all. From Maggie Smith a goddess in my eyes to Dustin Hoffman and Robin William to a strange inclusion of Phil Collins. They all fit in well together so well. A magical story of Hook which take me into a wonderful fantasy land of what kids should dream about. This superb production should not be pulled down, for it is essentially a children’s film but I love it. My kids thinks I am a big kid but I don’t care. Julia Roberts as Tinks id Fab ! I am not the biggest fan of Robin Williams but I do like his portrayal of Peter Pan

A magical movie for the entire family

    Granny included !!

    “Se7en” Movie Review

    “Seven” Plot Summary

Police drama about two cops, one new and one about to retire, after a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his MO.

one of the best-made films of its era and genre

Despite cliches, and a very depressing finale, this is one of the best-made films of its era and genre

The strengths of the film include an odd relationship between the two lead cops, who seem loosely based on the two lead cops of the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, but who (thankfully) never play for laughs, and never really become ‘buddies’ – the young cop is too arrogant, and the older cop has too much experience, which the young cop refuses to acknowledge. The two characters are also brilliantly acted by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (probably his best performance).

There’s one odd flaw in the film – about half-way through, I found that I had learned to ‘expect the unexpected’ from the film, which meant that the rest of the film was predictable in a bizarre way – simply decide where the expected move would be, and then expect the unexpected move instead. The most obvious instance of this is in the finale itself, which could be guessed at least 5 minutes ahead of time

Normally, this would be a formula for disaster – but fortunately, the high quality of the film-making twists the film into an edge-of-the-seat suspenseful waiting game as we watch with horror the one cop’s encounter with the insanity of pure evil

I didn’t want to admire this film (to be honest, I dislike Brad Pitt something fierce), but I’m afraid I must – very professionally made, it delivers its promised suspense all the way.

    “Great Expectations” Movie Review

    “Great Expectations” Plot Summary

Modernization of Charles Dickens classic story finds the hapless Finn as a painter in New York pursuing his unrequited and haughty childhood love.

    A fairy tale for adults

The visuals in the movie are quite stunning, this is a movie to be savored, let it carry you away on a journey. It’s fantasy, yet so real. Who wouldn’t want to live this motto? Let desire be your destiny. Who hasn’t had their heart broken yet found it impossible to ever really stop loving their object of desire? Who hasn’t felt such an intense and overwhelming need for someone only to be cast aside by them. And then you see them again, and you would do anything for just one moment with them

This is a story of desire, love, envy, and pain. A story of searching for what one desperately needs and as soon as it comes within reach not knowing how to accept it, pushing it away. The great expectations we all have for ourselves, our future and for some reason deny ourselves ever actually receiving the rewards

There are lessons to be learned here.
