“The Men Who Stare at Goats” Plot Summary
A reporter in Iraq might just have the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady, a guy who claims to be a former member of the U.S. Army’s New Earth Army, a unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions. add synopsis
I loved this film. Clooney and Spacey were particularly hilarious
The story borrows liberally from the exploits of Joe McMoneagle and Ingo Swann and the cadre of Remote Viewers stationed at Fort Meade, MD, under the operational detachment Project Stargate. Yes, as the film states upfront: ‘More of this is true than you would believe’. There are instances in the film that incorporate actual Stargate operations: tracking submarines, finding a kidnapped American General in Italy and the search for Noriega following the US invasion of Panama. The comedy comes from the disconnect that the professional military hierarchy has from the rest of us. The Pentagon has too much money at its disposal and its internal political dynamics encourage a bizarre mixture of risk-averse yet forward-thinking innovators. This was particularly rampant after our loss in Vietnam. Vietnam and the Cold War combined to pull the Pentagon Brass in a thousand different directions and created a schism in the strategic planning sectors that is ripe for comedic exploration. Grant Heslov deftly captured this cultural watershed through his direction of the film. He ably guided the actors in performances that while sometimes brief, captured the totality of the real absurdity that the military can sometimes give us, while keeping the characters real and grounded and not drifting into farce. Heslov has captured an elusive tone, entirely his own, that I’ve only previously seen in Coen Brother’s films. This is a story I’ve longed to see told on the big screen and it was worth the wait. You could say its a story about the Military-Insanity Complex, but that’s too broad a brush for this slice of American military history. Clooney is brilliantly understated as always, he’s a master of subtlety and an actor that understands how powerful the camera can be. Kevin Spacey is throughly despicable as the film’s only real villain. If the film has any flaws at all its that Spacey is not in it enough. But the most poignant character is beautifully drawn by Jeff Bridges, who in just a few scenes depicts the inevitable trajectory of the innovative free-thinker in a rigid, uncaring system. Bridges shows us the cost of being that individual and Heslov gives the film room to explore this aspect of the story without sacrificing the reason we’re all there to watch: and that is to have a laugh at something that maybe should never have happened but did.

“Kramer Versus Kramer” Plot Summary
A just divorced man must learn to care for his son on his own, and then must fight in court to keep custody of him. add synopsis
A fine movie
No, this has nothing to do with the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ or its eccentric and hilarious character Cosmo Kramer. In reality, ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ is a fine drama movie, without a doubt one of the finest of its kind and one of the greatest movies ever. I’m glad that it won more Oscars than ‘Apocalypse Now’ because it really deserved such glory.’Kramer vs. Kramer’ is an excellent film, so well made and so perfectly balanced that I wouldn’t change anything about it in any way. There is nothing wrong with the film. It’s film-making of the highest quality. And it stands the test of time, too. Not only it doesn’t look any dated, but also its cultural impact is long-lasting and its realistic story remains just as significant as it was when it came out in 1979. A timeless classic. They don’t make movies like this today
This movie is dramatic, realistic, simple but brilliant, intense, powerful, sweet and even tragic and depressing sometimes. Yet, it has fine humor as well. It has no special effects, but who cares? This is not the movie or place to discuss such thing. For a movie like this, such thing would be pointless and absolutely unnecessary
The story is very interesting. The actors’s chemistry is just perfect. All of the actors are great, but the 3 main ones are the very best. Dustin Hoffman, a brilliant actor, has his greatest performance ever here as the lovable but distant workaholic Ted Kramer. Meryl Streep is great as Ted’s wife, Joanna. And cute little Justin Henry is terrific as the loving but sometimes stubborn Billy, son of Ted and Joanna
The soundtrack is all instrumental and wonderful. The opening song (by the guitarist Frederic Hand) is brilliant. The rest of the soundtrack is mostly Antonio Vivaldi’s classical music and is simply dazzling
This motion picture has also an incredible development of the characters. See the character Ted Kramer: a workaholic who becomes an amazing father after being left with no choice but to take care of his son, trying to adjust these new responsibilities with his job after being left by his wife Joanna. With this, Ted learns about the most beautiful things in life, but also realizes how though life is, with the problems in his job and the return of Joanna, who wants the custody of their son. But even Joanna changes for better and the ending is an unexpected surprise when one sees this for the first time
This movie has also some though things, such as courtroom scenes where both Ted and Joanna face brutal character assassinations unleashed by the lawyers. Another though thing to see is when poor Billy falls off a jungle gym with his toy (a plane) and gets seriously injured on his face. But then again, the scene is very well made and what comes next is very intense: his father runs quickly and crosses numerous blocks, ignoring the traffic to take his son to the hospital
Overall, this is a movie which is a good lesson of life
This should definitely be on Top 250.

“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Movie Review
“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Plot Summary
Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey”, set in the deep south during the 1930’s. In it, three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.
The Best Coen Brothers Film Yet
Just seen this film at an NFT preview, and I was blown away by it. It is very funny, gorgeous to look at, has a stunning soundtrack and absolutely impeccable comedy performances. Sharing a similar meandering storyline with the Big Lebowski, it succeed where that film fails by still having a coherent storyline running through and a satisfying resolution. As I’ve come to expect from the Coens, the visuals are striking but they’ve never been this beautiful before, and at no time – unlike – in previous films, do they seem merely to be there as an exercise in cleverness. But what makes this film is the excellent comic performances from even the smaller roles (several of whom are Coen regulars) – Even though the characters, as in many coen films, are (slightly irregular) stereotypes the performances give even the shallow characters a depth and makes the scenes even more funny. Oh, and the soundtrack ain’t too bad either.

Post-apocalyptic America. What begins as a con game becomes one man’s quest to rebuild civilization by resuming postal service. add synopsis
A Movie About Hope
Possible Spoiler, If You Know Nothing About The Movie (8 Stars)This movie like many movies that get bad reviews is longer than most. It’s length may not let most viewers eat, chew gum, and talk at the same time. I liked it the first time I viewed it. It shows that desperate times require strength, courage, and hope. We may some day have a time when we are in dire straits. The World Trade Center September 11, comes to mind
When times are the toughest, someone has to step up to the plate and show courage. This man, the postman gives hope to those who had given up on life. It may be soapy, but it makes me feel good when it’s over. That is part of what watching movies is all about
Other movies that deal with post war situations, the Mad Max movies for the action, Blade Runner for it’s sci-fi, and Dr. Strangelove is my favorite classic movie with both humor and realism all tied up in a perfect package.

“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Movie Review
“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” Plot Summary
An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.
Surprisingly Good!
Chuck Barris is in bits. His life has been a sham and after the crazy seventies and the start of the excessive eighties, after contemplating suicide, he decides to write down the bizarre tale of his unbelievable life. After being a joke at school and a joke in his teens to the opposite sex, he catches onto the idea that if you are part of the entertainment industry chicks will find you irresistible. After rising through the ranks of the burgeoning TV industry he is approached by a shadowy figure who asks if he’d be interested in helping his country against the forces of communism that threaten Europe, and could, if successful there, threaten the United States itself
For reasons best known to himself, Chuck decides to go for it, maybe for a laugh, maybe to see what the job entails, but as time goes by he realises that his moral flexibility and creative talents may well have found an excellent duel purpose. As he devises a variety of inane shows he finds it exceedingly difficult to mask his covert actions. Added to this he meets a beautiful young woman who seems to like him for who he is, which makes the disturbing secret that he works as a Government Spook as is responsible for a number of assassinations even more difficult to live with
As his life goes on and he becomes a star with the likes of the Gong Show, and his life as a spook is threatened by a mole on the inside Chuck has to delve within himself and figure out exactly what he wants to do with his life, and more importantly, not die
Now let’s cut to the chase here, this film is very good. Sam Rockwell is a revelation as Chuck Barris and his performance is so good it’s frightening. He is amazing in this role and bearing in mind how shockingly awful he was in Charlie’s Angels it makes of an even more surprising film. George Clooney’s direction is assured and well handled and the combination of his skills with the camera and Charlie Kauffman’s brilliantly realised script is something that you just don’t expect to work, but work it does. Clooney wisely elects to keep his supporting role to a minimum and it helps the piece tremendously, even a couple of cameos from close friends don’t spoil what is one of the best directorial debuts ever
Whether Chuck Barris’ story of his life is true or not, this is a top-notch movie that exceeds all expectations and is yet another cinematic masterclass from Charlie Kauffman that, in the hands of George Clooney, becomes another great movie about choices and identity

“Ladykillers” Movie Review
“Ladykillers” Plot Summary
An eccentric, if not charming Southern professor and his crew pose as a band in order to rob a casino, all under the nose of his unsuspecting landlord: a sharp old woman.
An Amusing Tidbit from the Coen Bros.
Not up there with ‘O Brother’ or ‘Fargo,’ but definitely better than ‘Intolerable Cruelty.’ Best thing about it is the dialogue — there are a lot of really funny lines (though some of it is hard to understand). The plot — a remake — is a basic black comedy crime caper story where a gang of oddballs gets together to steal a bunch of money from a casino and everything eventually goes wrong. Tom Hanks is solid — his character is quite a creation — and the old lady is funny too. Of course — this being a Coen Bros. creation — there are lots of minor characters who are really amusing. Marlon Wayans’ character is annoying, though — he’s just sort of a typical p***ed-off, smart-ass, black guy. The cinematography is lovely, of course. And by the way, there is an AMAZING gospel choir and great gospel music throughout.
