“Dogma” Plot Summary
An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loophole and re-enter Heaven.
Great film, not up to the standard of Smith’s previous work
Those of you who are fans of Kevin Smith’s previous works (Clerks, Mallrats & Chasing Amy)may find this area familiar in some parts and unnerving and perhaps even commercial by comparison. Dogma sees fallen angels Bartleby and Loki (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon)attempting to make their way back into heaven via a newly instituted catholic dogma. The problem with this lies in the fact that if they are successful, they would have overturned a ruling by God, hence God is always right and if proven wrong would result in the undoing of existence. The familiar presence of Jay and Silent Bob is comforting and ensures that some of the essence Smith’s earlier work stays put, however at times this film dissents into areas that seem out of Smith’s depth. There are some surprisingly touching moments which implies that Smith gave a great deal of thought, similar to that of Chasing Amy. In general it is a great all round cast, (Linda Fiorentino,Chris Rock, Alan Rickman) and it is obvious that whilst writing this Smith had his tongue firmly in cheek.

“Return Of The Jedi” Plot Summary
After rescuing Han Solo from the palace of Jabba the Hutt, the Rebels attempt to destroy the Second Death Star, while Luke Skywalker tries to bring his father back to the Light Side of the Force.
Greatest Cinematic Film Of All Time
Despite the feelings of most ‘Star Wars’ fans, in my opinion ‘Return Of The Jedi’ is the greatest cinematic film ever created. Ever since the first time I saw it, it’s depth, intensity, special effects, and moving story have overwhelmed me. The film was so well put together that it has been able to stand the test of time over the last 20 years. Filled with powerful action, as the climax of the original trilogy, George Lucas gives us a rousing finish of the ‘Star Wars’ saga in ‘Jedi’.Film Summary (Contains Spoilers For Those Who Have Not Seen It)After ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ left us hanging for 3 long years we finally find the end of the story in ‘Return Of The Jedi’. Darth Vader, in emotional turmoil makes a surprise visit to a new uncompleted Death Star to oversee it’s construction. The Emperor is first seen in this film as he has the ultimate plan to destroy the Rebel Alliance and bring young Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side. Luke, Lando, Leia, Chewie, and the droids all travel to Tatooine to rescue the frozen Han Solo from the crime Lord; Jabba The Hutt. After Han has been rescued, and Jabba defeated, Luke returns to Dagobah to find a dying Yoda where he learns the awful truth; Darth Vader is in fact his father. The rebel heroes regroup with the Rebel Fleet. Now joined by other species and races including the Mon Calamari the Rebels must make a all-or-nothing plan of attack to destroy the Death Star before it is completed. While Lando heads the space attack in the Millennium Falcon, the Rebel heroes must disable the Death Star’s shield generator on the Forest Moon Of Endor. It is here that the Rebels happen upon the furry, but mighty Ewoks. During the the two part intense battle, a third battle must take place as Luke willingly delivers himself to Vader in an attempt to convince him to leave the Dark Side. In emotionally charged sequences Luke must face his father as the Emperor lures out his dark emotions. As young Skywalker is about to face his death at the hands of Palpatine, Vader turns on his wicked master to save his son’s life. Filled with a deep timeless story of good vs. evil, ‘Return Of The Jedi’ is a spectacular, emotionally charged film that redeems the good in all of us.

“Australia” Movie Review
“Australia” Plot Summary
Set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand.
Epic!
Australia is a long film (154 minutes to be precise) that is full of fun, action, a little comedy, romance and plenty of drama. Do not listen to the critics and people who are badmouthing this film. It is the sort of film you have to judge for yourself to understand it completely. It may be long but it is well worth your while. The film focuses its plot on three main characters – Hugh Jackman who I thought was great as the Drover (and showed me that he’s capable of many different roles besides Wolverine!), Nicole Kidman who I thought was brilliant as Lady Sarah Ashley and Brandon Walters who plays Nullah an orphaned boy who helps them dearly on their treacherous journey over an ‘unforgiving landscape’ and who is a main character throughout the film
The plot is fairly simple and never seems to lose track of itself. It captures and motivates you and keeps you interested up until the very end. I must admit this is an incredibly powerful and emotional film that can make you laugh and cry, especially near the end. I think the war-scenes were done brilliantly. You would never know CGI was involved! OK, maybe you would, but it was still pretty darn good! The landscapes were beautiful and sometimes, some of the scenes took me by surprise because I was just not expecting them. One scene in particular involving the cattle and a cliff was very thrilling and literally had me on the very edge of my seat! Very exciting! Now for the story – Set in 1939 before World War II, a woman (Nicole Kidman) inherits a ranch in Australia and reluctantly joins forces with a man named the Drover (Hugh Jackman) who as you have probably guessed, drives the cattle from A to B. They then experience the bombing of Darwin and let me tell you; they couldn’t have picked a worse time to fall in love! The story then takes it from there and so forth
Like I said before, this film literally had me on the edge of my seat. I did not think it was at all predictable and I do not think it deserves all the bad reviews it is receiving. Why, I do not know but then, I guess everyone has their own opinion. If you like war movies, romance and Hugh Jackman, I definitely recommend checking out this film. It is not your usual popcorn type movie. If I had seen this in the cinema, I would have been too distracted to eat popcorn anyway!! Give this film a go and judge it for yourself. 9/10.

“Mad Max” Movie Review
“Mad Max” Plot Summary
In a dystopic future Australia, a vicious biker gang murder a cop’s family and make his fight with them personal.
Low budget classic that is now a genre landmark.
Set somewhere in the future we are privy to a world where the roads are ruled by maniac gangs with souped up cars, and bikers that literally could come from hell. Trying to stop these marauding loons are the overstretched police force who themselves ride in exceptionally fast cars. At the front of this story is Max Rockatansky, a good honest cop trying to hold his own against the chaotic world that is forming around him. After his best friend is burned and left for dead he decides enough is enough and thinks about retiring from the service, but whilst on a vacation with his wife and child things go decidedly bad and Max becomes an avenging force of fury with devastating affect
When evaluating this film I feel it really needs to be put into perspective just how brilliant a job director George Miller did with next to no cash to work with, in fact Miller edited the film in his own bedroom just to emphasise the low-fi nature of the beast. The costumes are excellent, the cast are terrific, with Mel Gibson as Max particularly impressive, and here we have villains to truly fit the word villainous, but it’s the stunts and chase sequences that makes this film a rich rewarding experience. The opening ten minutes alone are pure adrenalin pumping genius, but the film as a whole delivers a crash bang wallop punch that has often been imitated since its release, but rarely bettered, and although the heart of the film is a simple revenge story, it grabs your attention and delivers right to the corking finale, 8/10.
Footnote: Region 2 Users should note that the bargain bucket Mad Max Trilogy flip pack set still contains the foolishly dubbed version of this film, incredibly stupid move from the American distributors.

“Pretty Woman” Plot Summary
A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets… only to fall in love.
A winning romantic comedy.
Garry Marshall may not be the most interesting director working in Hollywood, but his movies are definitely entertaining, and in that sense he is successful. Perhaps his two greatest films, which also are the ones he’ll most likely be remembered for, are ‘Beaches’ and ‘Pretty Woman’. One of the most commercially successful (almost $500m worldwide!!) romantic comedies of all time,’Pretty Woman’ is a charming modern day fairy tale that works largely in part to the phenomenal on-screen chemistry between its two stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. In an Academy Award nominated performance as Vivian Ward, Julia Roberts truly shines. Her screen presence is nothing short of radiating, not to mention she’s a highly skilled comedic actress. The film also owes a lot to its equally strong supporting performances from Jason Alexander, Laura San Giacomo and Hector Elizondo. All cliches aside, it’s highly enjoyable and stands up superbly even after repeated viewings, a definite 10/10.

“Straw Dogs” Movie Review
“Straw Dogs” Plot Summary
A young American and his English wife come to rural England and face increasingly vicious local harassment.
First rate thriller.
Peckinpah’s post- ‘Wild Bunch’ movies were a mixed bag. Frequently battling studios, censors and/or his own demons, some are genuine classics (‘..Alfredo Garcia’), some are entertaining potboilers (‘The Getaway’), and some like ‘Straw Dogs’ are in between. I could never argue that this movie is his best work, but it is far from his worst, and whatever you can say about his movies, they are ALWAYS interesting.’Straw Dogs’ is the closest he came to making a genre horror/thriller movie. If you enjoy ‘Rio Bravo’-inspired siege movies such as Romero’s ‘Night Of The Living Dead’ or Carpenter’s ‘Assault On Precinct 13′, check this one out. But it is more than ‘just’ a thriller – it features strong character development, and morally ambiguous situations among the tense build up to the explosive climax. In these P.C. times ‘Straw Dogs’ offers no simple answers, but plenty of issues for discussion, and it is to be commended for that. ‘Right’ or ‘wrong’? YOU decide!

“The Pursuit of Happyness” Plot Summary
A struggling salesman takes custody of his son as he’s poised to begin a life-changing professional endeavor. add synopsis
I’m still wiping the tears from my eyes
I was so hesitant to see The Pursuit of Happiness for one reason, this movie looked like an incredible tear jerker, just from the trailer I was nearly crying. But my friend and I had been hearing incredible reviews about this movie, so we decided to suck it up and see the movie today and we were just blown away by how amazing Will Smith’s performance was. He and his son were just so incredibly heart warming and really reminded you of the important things in life. I was so touched by Chris’s story, he was so determined, this movie makes you wanna go out and achieve your dreams and to never let anyone tell you what is right and what is wrong, what you can and cannot do
Chris Gardner is a struggling salesmen trying just to make the rent, buy food, and take the best care of his son that he possibly can. When his wife leaves him and his son to go get a better life, Chris is left on his own, but he wins an internship at a stocks broker company that is very competitive. Against incredible odds, he just pulls through the ultimate lows of life and keeps his head up with his son by his side. They become homeless, living in hotels, homeless shelters, and even a cruddy subway bathroom! But Chris holds on to his ultimate dream of being happy and giving him and his son the life they truly deserve
This movie in every way possible is perfect, it was so brilliantly made and just so inspiring. Will Smith better be nominated for an Oscar next month! This was an incredible performance and his son was just so cute, I guess talent really does run in his family. :) I would highly recommend The Pursuit of Happiness this year! It was a beautiful film that makes you feel like you can achieve anything you truly put you heart too, I just wish I brought more tissues! 10/10

“Star Trek” Movie Review
“Star Trek 2009″ Plot Summary
A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members. |
Fun
As someone with a longstanding fondness for most things Trek (I’ve seen most of the movies and quite a few of the shows), I have to say that JJ & Co did a fine job with this picture; the character dynamics were broadly satisfying, the action scenes entertaining and the set pieces well put together. Most of all I was impressed with the lightness of touch of the whole venture – it would be very easy to criticise the picture for making what could be considered significant changes to certain parts of Trek lore, but given that the changes were accomplished with such comfort and confidence makes them, in my view, perfectly acceptable.
With regards to the acting characterisation, everyone was pretty much solid, with perhaps the exception of Sulu, who I thought didn’t have much to do. Kudos, though, to Zoe Saldana’s loveliness as Uhura and also, especially, to Chris Pine as Kirk – I had always thought Spock was my favourite character, but it looks like I may have to reassess; Pine lives and breathes that Kirk moxie exquisitely and he’ll be great fun to watch in future instalments.
With regards to plot, it’s pretty good; there is a decent sense of internal logic to it, without it being too overwrought. True, there are a number of points where you might think, ‘Blimey, that’s serendipitous,’ but as I’d already suspended my disbelief to accept the possibility of time travelling green-blooded alien from the planet Vulcan, these things really didn’t bother me at all. Plus there were a number of points in the movie where they were saying, ‘We were pulling this kind of shtick 20+ years ago, and you loved it then; run with us on this one,’ and I was happy to.
Oh, and most importantly of all, the movie is fun; it has the good sense to not take itself too seriously, despite remaining well aware of that sense of pomp and importance that all great character dramas should have, and that isn’t a bad thing at all.
How this movie will bear up to repeat viewings, I’m not certain yet, but at the premiere, it was a blast.
Addendum: It’s a month plus since I originally wrote this and I have seen the film three times in total now – the opening ten minutes remain a manipulative marvel that the remainder of the film struggles to match, the coincidences and conveniences seem even more far fetched than ever and the jokes seem even more silly BUT I still fancy seeing it again, so I guess it must work for me.

“Predator” Movie Review
“Predator” Plot Summary
A team of commandos, on a mission in a Central American jungle, find themselves hunted by an extra-terrestrial warrior.
Really cool action with unforgettable characters
In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger was solidifying his position as an action superstar with the releases of the epic Conan, the influential Terminator and the somewhat mediocre Commando that was still fun to watch anyway. However, that position wouldn’t be fully cemented until the arrival of Terminator 2 in 1991 which forever raised the bar for the action genre.
But plain and simple, ‘Predator’ is a staple for Schwarzenegger’s profile. It introduced the ultra cool ‘Predator’ to the world and changed the popular culture’s perspectives on alien movies. But the movie itself isn’t just known for the central character, like the crappy Friday the 13th movies that are only known for the murderous Jason Voorhees and his stupid hockey mask. But ‘Predator’ is known for the movie as a whole, with a great simplistic plot, awesome characters and great action that will make people want to see this again and again.
The movie is a about a former soldier/mercenary named Dutch (Arnie) who has been involved in a lot of conflict and has since decided to settle down and be the leader of a rescue team. He goes to a South American country to participate in a mission that would supposedly rescue a Cabinet Minister and a few other hostages, but later on he finds out that he’s been set up and it was actually a mission to destroy a rebel base that would’ve invaded sooner or later. And Dutch gets ticked off and he and his team try to escape the jungle, but they’re then being pursued by an alien who ‘hunts’ rather than kills. As the situation escalates, Dutch starts to lose his sanity and that’s totally evident in the final showdown with the creature.
Like James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’ that came out the year before, ‘Predator’ is shaped by it’s excellent characters, Dutch is the great, silent leader who is somewhat broken inside from all the combat that he went through in the past and his quote ‘If it bleeds, we can kill it’ is among the greatest. Blain is the totally cool tobacco-chewing, mini-gun-totting guy who spewed out 2 of the movie’s best lines: ‘I ain’t got time to bleed’, and ‘This stuff’ll make you a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me’. Mac is pretty much Blain’s best bud and frequently shaves with his razor and without the shaving cream to show his manliness. Hawkins is the super-nerd of the group who reads comic books and occasionally makes some sick jokes about his girlfriend. Billy is the silent, no-nonsense spiritual dude. Dillon is the dirty CIA agent who was best pals with Dutch a few years back and then sets up Dutch and his team, which leads to their demise and his, as well. And finally, Poncho is the sympathetic, yet sarcastic soldier who connects with Anna, their hostage, during the course of the film. And these guys are great characters; and they each have their own personalities, which makes you want to see more out of each guy.
And of course, I can’t forget about the ‘Predator’. The high-tech alien that hunts other creatures for sport was a very creative and original idea. It also held a very intimidating presence and the special effects were very well done, especially the camouflage. And I’m still wondering how that managed to do that in 1987.
And last, but not the least, the action really stands out thanks to the direction of John McTiernan, who directed this right before he made ‘Die Hard’. The scene when the team attacks the rebel camp is, without a doubt one of the best in cinema, since it shows each team member providing something in the attack, and it’s not just one guy who acts like a one-man army and destroys everything in his path all by himself. Also, Dutch’s confrontation with the predator at the end, which displays more prehistoric styles of combat with the setting of the boulder and spike traps. And this movie makes up the modern warfare action and the caveman action so well.
Any action/sci-fi junkie should watch this, and they will be HOOKED. And you will want to see this again and again.
