“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” Movie Review
“The Assassination of Jesse James” Plot Summary
Robert Ford, who’s idolized Jesse James since childhood, tries hard to join the reforming gang of the Missouri outlaw, but gradually becomes resentful of the bandit leader.
An epic masterpiece. Thoughtful, philosophical and profoundly existential
With a title almost as long as the 160-movie it names, regular movie-goers might be forgiven for thinking that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford is worth a miss. Too, even, that a title basically giving away the central hub of the film’s plot makes it hard for studio execs to sell the film as a sassy, gun-toting western with shlocky shoot-em-ups and angel eyes Brad Pitt darling it up in the lead role. This was all many were expecting after several re-edits, one being a but-numbing 3? hour cut, were made to a film that actually wrapped up filming in 2005. But what Chopper director Andrew Dominik has delivered, in only his second film, is an beautiful, epic, meditative poem of a western, that once again transforms the genre, once such a stable for conservative normality, by dissecting the myths that created it
Brad Pitt is uber-outlaw Jesse James, co-founder of the James-Younger gang, primarily specialising in train robberies. Casey Affleck is Robert Ford, a clumsy, awkward upstart, who is entranced by Jesse James to the point of obsession. He views him like a celebrity, studying his life, his robberies, his voice and even his mannerisms. He is so entranced that at one point whilst attempting to engage his idol in a conversation during one of James’ tin bath sessions, James very coldly utters to Ford ‘Do you want to be like me? Or do you wanna be me?’.Ford is constantly teased by his fellow thieves and gunmen, taunted for his love and idolisation of the gang ringleader. As the title suggests (or rather gives away), it leads to a tragic conclusion, a conclusion revealed so that the whole film may operate on a level far more complex than mere formulaic convention. Since we know the fate of the hero, it is not about where the journey ends, or indeed how it ends. But rather what the journey is, and how the characters deal with it. James seems to flirt with the idea of death, having been rendered a stalinesque paranoia-case after losing faith in all of his gang members. Towards the end of the film, he relies only on the help of the Ford brothers Charlie and Robert, not being able to trust any one else. He would be proved right, when Robert is the one to pull the trigger
The Assassination of Jesse James is a majestic western. It is beautifully shot in a way that doesn’t just please the eye, but utterly renders both the icy mood and bitterly cold temperature of the film it colours. The acting is first rate, with Brad Pitt playing the cold psychopath that is Jesse James with a subtle viciousness beneath his icy blue eyes. But Casey Affleck is the man who walks away with the film. Every scene he is in, he steals. His Robert Ford is brilliantly balanced between the enthusiastically enthralled and gawkish pathos. His obsession with James is understandable, given the legend of the outlaw that has spun a million myths in its wake, but it is reminiscent, at least to a modern audience, of a Mark Chapman the man who shot John Lennon. In fact one of the many themes running throughout Andrew Dominik’s film is that of the obsession with a myth. He is known as the ‘coward’ but is it to be a coward? Ford idolises James like many people do modern celebrities. When James reveals his spiteful and altogether psychotic edge to Ford, the myth is dispelled, and everything Ford had invested in him becomes crushed. All Ford could do to redeem himself, he felt, would be to kill James, and end the charade. But alas, all that did was strengthen the legend further
Perhaps in another world, it would be pleasant to know that The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford gets all the credit it deserves, but it appears to have split many people up the middle. Some people think it is pretentious, and write sniffy articles about the film’s languidness. Others think it is too long and obscure. I am at the point now when it really doesn’t matter when dealing with a film of this magnitude, because it was a profoundly affecting experience, one reminiscent of the beautiful epics Terrence Malick used to make. If you find a better film this year, I would very surprised.

“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” Movie Review
“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” Plot Summary
A toon hating detective is a cartoon rabbit’s only hope to prove his innocence when he is accused of murder.
A unique movie experience
‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ is a wonder in the art of making films. Because it mixes live-action and cartoons, it was a challenge to be made. But that’s exactly what makes it so distinguish and unique, especially considering that the idea works out so well. It’s a different and original movie experience, a real winner.
Yet, the film is more than a combination of live-action and cartoons. It has a dark atmosphere with lots of suspense, almost like a thriller. Classic humor isn’t forgotten either, with numerous funny lines and hysterical gags, as well as humorous characters. The joke about В«uncle ThumperВ» is one of the funniest, but there are many others. There’s also a hilarious piano acting with Donald Duck and Daffy Duck, which they play the same piano song as in Tom & Jerry’s short ‘The Cat Concerto’ and have their hilariously silly battle. In fact, the soundtrack of the movie is excellent, including Jessica Rabbit’s song ‘Why don’t you do right?’ and a suspense music very similar to one from the original ‘Back to the Future’.
Other movies that successfully mix live-action and cartoons are ‘Mary Poppins’, ‘Pete’s Dragon’ and ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’. Like ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, those three movies combine this ‘marriage’ very well. On the other hand, other movies such as ‘Space Jam’ tried this idea but without the same success.
I believe that this movie was made in a unique moment of inspiration. The sceneries are great, the designs, the cartoons, the backgrounds, the details, the animation, the special effects, the artwork… everything was carefully made and I very much welcome that. This is one of the greatest live-action films from Disney.
Great actors make the difference too. Bob Hoskins is English but speaks with an excellent American accent, not to mention that he does the amazing thing of acting against the air. Joanna Cassidy, Charles Fleischer, Alan Tilvern, Stubby Kaye, Cristopher Lloyd and Kathleen Turner are awesome too. Kathleen Turner is the voice of Jessica Rabbit, with that sexy and sensual voice. And… guess what! Even the singer Frank Sinatra has a minor role in this film as the hilarious but useless Singing Sword. Even without looking at the credits, who wouldn’t recognize that great voice? Frank Sinatra’s voice is just as recognizable as Nat King Cole’s or Sterling Holloway’s.
As for the characters, the weasels are a perfect example of chronical stupidity. They’re humorous because they’re always laughing, even though they know what happens to someone who can’t stop laughing.
Marvin Acme is В«the king of the jokesВ», always humorous and cheerful and at his funniest with his mythical hand-buzzer. Angelo is an idiot, drunk and greedy guy, but funny at the same time. Dolores is a great character. R. K. Maroon is an interesting character with half a dark side and half a good side. Judge Doom is a great villain, humorous, mysterious and somewhat sinister. Roger Rabbit is hilarious and very jolly – that’s his only purpose as a cartoon, like he says himself. Jessica Rabbit is a very sexy cartoon, one of the most beautiful and sexiest ever – she’s not bad, she’s just drawn that way. Benny the Cab is funny. Baby Herman is a bit annoying – he might look innocent at first, but he is extremely rude and he loves to woo women. Eddie Valiant is another great character – grumpy, serious and funny sometimes. And he looks very much like my godfather in appearance.
The movie takes place in Hollywood, 1947. It does recreate the 40’s very well. That influence is notorious in many ways, including the cars used.
Before finishing, let me say that I like rabbits very much. They’re adorable and very cute animals, although in the cartoons they aren’t as cute – but they’re usually funny in cartoons.
This should definitely be on Top 250.

Bloody Good Movie
I think that this movie was horribly underrated in the UK, and it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I saw the animated series before the movie, and got interested in watching it, but as I have a phobia of vomit, I was incredibly shocked when I saw Bill Murray throw up all over Molly Shannon with visual and graphic sounds. Still, I plucked up the courage to watch the rest of the movie, which I really enjoyed. However, to this day I have to skip the vomit scene on my DVD. I liked the fact that it was a classic ‘cop type’ story, with a baddie, a love interest, a rookie cop and a partnership too. I thought that David Hyde Pierce played the part of Drix brilliantly and Chris Rock was superb as Osmosis. I also like the fact that the movie teaches kids that it’s important to take care of yourself
My friend and I still quote ‘You gotta get spiffy!’ all the time. I also really loved the soundtrack, I went frantic searching for the CD!

“Collateral” Movie Review
“Collateral” Plot Summary
A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in LA. He must find a way to save both himself and one last victim.
The Best thriller of 2004.
Collateral combines star power, great performances, top notch direction, a fantastic soundtrack and what is a bona fide contender to be called the best action scene in years. Quite simply, I can not think of a movie released in 2004 that thrilled me quite as much as Collateral. Collateral has Tom Cruise (Who rivals Sean Penn to be called my favorite actor of the generation of 40-something year olds) as Vincent, a smart, precise hit-man in Los Angeles to kill five targets in one night. He hires cabdriver Max (Jamie Foxx, in a now Oscar nominated performance) for the night and they’re off. Max realizes that something is up around the time that Vincent leaves at the first stop and a dead body hits the roof of his cab. Upon his return, he replies that he didn’t kill him, ‘Bullets and the fall killed him.’ Over the course of the night they make more stops, most of which turn into great scenes, whether they’re going to a jazz club to off a guy or to a hospital to pay a visit to Max’s mom. The scene I was referring to the best action scene in years takes place in a night club where Max and Vincent, some cops who think Max is the killer, a thug belonging to Vincent’s employer who also thinks Max is the Killer, a cop who knows Max isn’t the Killer, club security, Vincent’s target and his bodyguards and a dance floor full of bystanders meet up. There is about five minutes of characters driving to the club that builds up tension beyond belief. When it goes down, it may be a flurry of gunfire, but with the setting of the club, the quality of Mann’s direction and the coolest piece of music I’ve heard in a movie this year(Paul Oakenfold- Ready Steady Go,) it adds up to the best action scene of at least this year, topping even the car chases of movies like The Bourne Supremacy, Which I loved, The Matrix Reloaded, Which I liked, and I, Robot, Which I didn’t care for. Collateral can be seen as an adrenaline pumping thriller, which it is, or as something more. For those of us who loved Mann’s 1995 epic Heat, Collateral is definitely the latter. Mann makes references to heat in several ways. For those who thought that the subway finale was a disappointment, check out Heat. The nod there is that Heat begins on a subway platform and ends at the airport, while Collateral begins in the LAX terminal and ends on the subway. That is just one of several nods. When people have been saying stuff about the best thriller of 2004, they are frequently mentioning Collateral, The Bourne Supremacy and The Manchurian Candidate. While I consider Collateral a clear victor, I certainly understand why someone would mention The Bourne Supremacy, but The Manchurian Candidate was murky all the way through, had a weak ending and was a major step down from the 1962 version, which is one of the best movies ever made. I’ll use the phrase that James Berardinelli uses on his favorite summer movies to wrap this up. When the dust settles, Collateral will be the best of this (Last) years summer movies. Sadly, Collateral only got two Oscar nods, Supporting Actor, Foxx, and Editing. However, that’s more than any other mentioned summer thriller got. ***1/2 (Out of ****)

“We Were Soldiers” Movie Review
“We Were Soldiers” Plot Summary
The story of the first major battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War and the soldiers on both sides that fought it.
I’ve been waiting over 30 years for one
Ever since 1970 when I finished my third tour of combat duty with the Marines in Viet Nam I have been waiting for a film that reflected the American Fighting Man in the Viet Nam war as an American Fighting Man; not a drugged-out, anti-war whiner. Well this is it. The movie is non-stop action after the first fifteen minutes of character development is finished. Having experienced what it is like to be over-run by the NVA during the third week of my first VN tour I can tell you that this movie does an excellent job of showing the excitement, tension, exhaustion, chaos, and courage of an extended battle. While this is by no means the best war movie I have ever seen, it is the first Viet Nam war movie which has provided me with a sense of satisfaction after leaving the theater. Mel Gibson turns in a good performance, Sam Elliot is a bit stiff. The wives of the soldiers are believable. Including a bit of the NVA’s attitude about the war adds a balanced flavor to the film. Overall I would say that you will experience at least a small part the intensity of war if you go to this movie. I took my female companion and she was shocked, touched, and thrilled with it. As Americans, we need to remember that freedom is not, and never has been, free. It is always paid for with the blood of those who fight to get it, sustain it, or expand it. The politically correct may not like this film, but then who cares what they like. Thanks for making this film Mel. I’ve been waiting over 30 years to see it.

“6th Sense” Plot Summary
A boy who communicates with spirits that don’t know they’re dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist. add synopsis
A surprising masterpiece!
Sometime Bruce Willis can make some bad films, like HUDSON HAWK and MERCURY RISING. And other times he can make some films that change the film industry and blow the audiences away (i.e. DIE HARD triology, 12 MONKEYS, and PULP FICTION). Now Willis’ new film, THE 6th SENSE falls in the latter catageory, as a surprising masterpiece that will leave images stuck in your mind for quite sometime. Willis plays Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist, who is quite good at his job, he has a loving wife named Anna (played by the beautiful Olivia Williams), and he just got awarded by the mayor of Philadelpia for his excellent work. Then one night, Malcolm gets a terrifying unexpected visit from one of his former patients. The visit is so terrifying, that it haunts Malcolm later on. Months later, Malcolm’s job is going downhill, and his marriage is falling apart. Then his life is changed around when he meets Cole, a eight year old boy who is considered a ‘freak’ by everybody but his mom. Cole is usually alone, scared, and has cuts and bruses on his body. The doctors and social workers think the injuries come from his mom, Lynn Sear (Toni Collette). But Lynn loves Cole too much that she wouldn’t even think of harming him. The truth is that the injuries that Cole has are from other people, people that Cole only sees, people that are dead. Cole sees dead people walking around with the living, and only Cole sees these ghostly figures. Malcolm tries to help Cole with his unique gift, and to also find out what these ghostly figures want with him. When I saw the trailers for this movie, it looked like a o.k. movie. Acutally, the preview didn’t have any effect on me at all, as for seeing this film. But when I saw this film, I was blown away on how excellent this was! This is a highly entertaining film that is scary, sad, funny, and even touching. The plot is brilliant, it has intellegence, and shows the personalities of the characters well enough that you feel like that you know them after the movie is over. The acting is also great, Willis does a good job as the doctor trying to help poor Cole. Toni Collette is also great as the suffering mom who’s very worried and protective over Cole. Oliva Williams is good as well as the suffering wife of the doctor who feels that she’s losing her husband more and more everyday. But the real surprise is Haley Joel Osment, who plays the little boy, Cole. For a child actor he’s excellent! He shows potential to becomming a great actor in years to come. He’s the next promising child actor that will hopefully do well like Elija Wood and Anna Panquin. Overall, THE 6th SENSE took me by surprised, and I ended up loving this film. I would have to place this film as one of the best films of the year, as well as for the summer films. And for a PG13 rated film, it’s quite scary! This is one film that no one should miss!!! ***** (out of five)

“The Phantom of the Opera” Plot Summary
A disfigured musical genius, hidden away in the Paris Opera House, terrorizes the opera company for the unwitting benefit of a young protegee whom he trains and loves.
A fantastic experience!
I have seen the movie, Phantom of the Opera, five times, a phenomenon never experienced with any other movie in my life. The movie has such depth and rich details, making it is worthy of spending the time and money to see it five times. Please spare me any more negative comments about Gerard Butler’s performance! I have seen the play in New York and in a regional theater. Of all performances I have seen, Gerard Butler’s portrayal of the Phantom is the finest, most sensitive, and most provocative. His singing is full of emotion, making his character believable and powerful. I would like to see Gerard Butler get some recognition for his performance, because he lifts the character of the Phantom far beyond what it has been in the past. He was perfect for the role, and his acting and singing should be recognized as one of the best performances on the screen this year! Emmy would not have been as great as she was without the performance provided by Gerard Butler. I want to thank Gerard Butler for taking me out of the everyday details of living into a world of ‘music of the night.’ Speak out for Gerard Butler’s receiving recogniton for his truly inspiring performance as the Phantom!

“A Bronx Tale” Plot Summary
A father becomes worried when a local gangster befriends his son in the Bronx in the 1960s.
A Very Pleasant Surprise
I watched this film last night for the first time
I am a great fan of The Godfather trilogy but overall find the ‘gangster film’ genre just too violent and the use of F— word every other word tedious and numbing. When my husband suggested watching A Bronx Tale I intended to see much of the same bloodshed. I was to be pleasantly surprised
This wonderful movie quickly drew me in with its sensitive portrayal of its father and son and the soon to be introduced conflict of the relationship developed between the son and the local mob boss
Many reviewers have retold the story and so I will not waste time with another rehash. In the end it is a film full of love and sensitivity and a new, fresh look at the possibility that a Mafia boss can care and love a boy who does not share his blood and want the best for him and knows that the best is not to ‘be him’. C has the good fortune to have two men care deeply about his well being and his future. How many children are in this world who have no one who cares about how they turn out
Robert DeNiro proves that he is not only a gifted actor, but a wonderful, sensitive director with a keen sense of storytelling. And what can you say about Chazz Palminteri’s story and screenplay which is a reflection of his own youth? Amazing
What started out as a ‘I’ll sit through this movie because my husband wants to see it’ turned into a memorable two hours. I’ll watch it again and will recommend it to anyone who will listen. Bravo gentlemen!

So much fun!
It’s been a while since I’ve laughed so much while watching a movie. This six-pack of regular Joes really becomes very likable. And they’re played by an excellent cast. Each and everyone of them doesn’t look like an actor, if you know what I mean. A great comedy, but also a very touching film. There’s nothing funny in the harsh economic reality that these guys (and a lot of others) have to endure. The soundtrack is excellent. There’s even Gainsbourg ‘Je t’aime moi non plus’ in it. A movie that you just want to see again! Seen at home, in Toronto, on February 11th, 2006.87/100 (***?)
