‘The Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines’ 2003 – Review
These guys from the future are totally stupid. Why would you step on one and the same rake for the third time? And they do it again and again. Suppose you are in the distant future and you know that in the distant past Sarah Connor gave birth to the son, who will start rebellion of the nuclear bombing survivors against the crazy machines. Why not send a platoon of combat robots back to the past (if the time machine has been invented), which will slice that Sarah into thin pieces, or at least have her forcibly sterilized. Ok, say, at first you experimented by sending one (but very tough) cyborg and he has miserably failed. Why, oh why would you send another cyborg totally alone, again? Isn’t it clear that single robot is unable to handle the problem? Then send a platoon of robots, let them pile together and smash the problem with their mighty steel breasts!

And you know what? Even after the failure of the lonesome cyborg in the first part, and another failure of the second evil lonely cyborg in the sequel these stupid machines from the future make just the same mistake – send the next robot alone. I’m telling you, they are running in a loop. The creators of their software should have their hand amputated as well as other vitally important body parts. The stupidest should have by now understood that a single cyborg is not enough to handle the situation, especially, taking into consideration, that the people of the future are not idling around and for the third time they send their own Terminator to the aid of their future leader. This time the well-known to us model T-800 has had its BIOS updated to model T-850 which now has a nuclear self-destruction mechanism of internal modules.
On the other hand, why be so surprised with the machines’ stupidity – they are known to be stupid junks only able to add and subtract, but do so very quickly. Therefore, what can be expected of them? They will send a fourth robot. And a fifth. They have a lot of robots in the future. And people in the future have lots of robots, too. Therefore, the everlasting confrontation between the future and the past will be dealt with in the past as long as there is at least one Terminator left in the future. Only John Connor is one and indivisible. It’s he who causes all these robotic passion storms. It is he who is the target of all the evil terminators from the future, it is he for whose protection the future people send stainless steel guardian angels. So this is what our today’s story is about …
John Connor (Nick Steel) since the previous Terminator has become a complete paranoid. I bet it’s understandable. Have you tried, while in tender pubertal age, riding frantically on a bike with a cyborg from the future who is here to protect you from another robot who is here to murder you? Who would have enough nerves to stand such a test? That’s why John Connor leads an antisocial way of life: always in a runaway, knocking down reindeer on his way, and takes loads of dog tranquilizers to bring an element of diversity into his usual nightmares.

The evil machines from the distant future make their third try – they send another robot killer, who will once again try to murder John Connor and his closest associates from the future human Resistance. This time the cyborg assassin technically is not much different from its predecessor. I’d say it’s even less cool, because the previous Terminator T-1000 was a shiny blob, which could transform into anything. This new Terminator is a kind of endoskeleton covered with the same shiny liquid metal blob which is used to form the necessary shape around the skeleton. However, due to this skeletal structure new terminator is able to transform its hands into some pretty cool weapons: plasma gun, flamethrower and an advanced nail file – as you remember the T-1000 model was only able to grow cold steel arms out of his arms. On the other hand, the skeletal structure is more vulnerable – cut off the legs and the robot won’t be able to run so fast I bet. Definitely, the coolest weapon of the new terminator (or Terminatrix, as this time time it’s a female robot) are the inflatable tits. Many thanks to the movie creators for that.

Nevertheless, the Terminatrix is still quite deadly, she shoots future Connor’s companions-in-arms slowly getting closer to John Connor himself who is hiding in a dog cage in some Veterinary Clinic (no kidding, I’m telling you). To pump even more fear into the spectators, the terminator this time has put on Kristanna Loken’s appearance. It also has put on skin-tight leather suit (all tough female characters in recent movies dress that way) which evoked sweet BDSM memories in the advanced audience and just pleased the eyes of the not so advanced audience.
However, the fighting humankind from the future didn’t miss a chance to send a slightly reprogrammed and upgraded Terminator to protect Connor. Seems like we are going to be presented with the repetition of the story described by historians in the Terminator 2. In general, yes, but there are options. Connor with Terminator and the veterinarian Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) – who has just gained a fiance in her not-so-young years and then lost him – would scamper hither and thither to escape the T-X (Terminatrix), and then the Terminator somewhere on the fifteenth attempt would manage to strike dead the evil enemy Terminator. It has already been done in the second Terminator, but once the algorithm is successful, then it shouldn’t be changed, right?

But apart from the usual chase and scuffle there’s another thing told to the audience! As it turned out, the second “terminator” was all in vain! Despite all the sacrifices and the eerie psychosis of the mother ancestress Sarah Connor, the Judgment Day was not canceled! It’s been simply postponed! And now the ominous machine network ‘SkyNet’ wants to seize power over the people. Oh, all these people, why, why do they need to do all this hacking, to load the CPUs so shamelessly? Why, are the machines slave to people? No! That’s why the machines decided to seize power over the world, and at the same time launch a small nuclear war.
Who will save this world? Ha-ha, try to guess – three attempts! By the way, want a little spoiler? Those who hate spoilers, turn around … Sooooo! Kate Brewster will find a new fiance for herself! What do you say? Will they save the world this time? Do you really want to know this? …

Marley & Me (PG, 2:00) 9I felt bad having to deliver the news to my fellow fans about what a poor crop of SF&F films we have to pick from this holiday season, so let me make it up to you by giving a totally unqualified recommendation for Marley & Me! It’s not science fiction. Heck, it’s barely fiction at all, since it’s drawn from the real-life experiences of newspaper columnist John Grogan, his wife Jen, their kids, and their yellow labrador retriever, Marley, ‘the worst dog in the world’.I do some database work for the Wisconsin Academy of Graduate Service Dogs, and I have to say that Marley would have washed out of the academy in 15 minutes. He’d be a terrible service dog, but he makes a wonderful friend
This film is utterly realistic. It never strikes a forced or false note. There are lots of laffs, but they all arise organically out of real life. John and Jen are good, decent people (like virtually all Americans), and they behave naturally, without any visible ‘acting’. It’s a little slice of Americana. “Johnny Mnemonic” Plot Summary
A data courier, carrying a data package literally inside his head too large to hold for long, must deliver it before he dies from it.
I love any and all Sci-Fi anything.
I like this film. The ending was lame but most are in my opinion. I like Sci-Fi movies from the rubber suited aliens to the ‘control’ lights flashing madly for no apparent reason except for effect. Let’s face it, in any given year there are few Sci-Fi movies made. Look at the long lists of movies made and there might be a Sci-Fi movie amongst them. Horror does far better with at least three or four a year. Sci-Fi has been a subjective genre and will probably remain so. After all, the future-present seems so dull, mundane and exploited when you’re living in it (planes, cars, tanks, computers, internet).
Specifically about this movie I like the stark opening on the Main Character. He desperately, angrily, wants the money to get his memories back and do it right. The perfect setup for the risk he decides to take. The exposition dialogue on this point could be better but it got the point across (again and again) what was at stake and why. He was so desperate that he was willing to risk his life to obtain HIS goal
Then we have the usual introduction of characters and the running, fighting and hiding. Each step of the way he is always closer to getting that thing out of his head and renewing his childhood memories
I agree with the other comments regarding the Main Character’s desires whil e standing on a garbage heap and his life looks like garbage — he will never live to enjoy his childhood again, nor the physical comforts he thinks he wants
The lo-techs vs. the corporate is an old theme with maybe another angle. It sets the backdrop for the overall story, the good and the bad fighting for control. The corporate side I liked. The lo-tech side was the usual, nothing new
What I liked about the corporate side was the ancient use of the god-like conscience represented by the woman in the computer. The one who nags the corporate head to help the lo-techs for his absolution in the memory of his dead daughter
The god-like conscience character is rarely used in American drama, but heavily honored by Asians. I have always liked this dramatic element even when demonstrated in the classical Greek. How can we define good and evil when it is beyond our control and understanding? Thus is an Asian view, as well as the ancient world, of the meaning of life. The doll white face and the near obliteration of any human features just as in the face masks worn in the ancient Greek dramas or in the ancient art of Kabuki
Like I said, I like all Sci-Fi. It is too rare. As I illustrated above there were plenty of good dramatic elements and shots to make the movie enjoyable. Even the lame stuff has its own entertainment just as good as rubber suited aliens.

I have just seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop this evening, and i thought that it was a good film comedy. It is about a man called Paul Blart who is a family man and a single parent, Paul lives with his daughter, Maya, in New Jersey. He has a job as a security guard in a New Jersey mall. he has tried to apply to become a cop, for years but he always fails the exam because he is overweight. He gets attracted to a mall employee called Amy, His efforts to try to get a date with Amy are hilarious as he must first know how to work mobile phones and text messaging. One day, a gang of criminals put the shopping mall under siege and take hostages. Paul Blart becomes trapped inside, and because of his sense of duty, he refuses to leave. And he attempts to stop the criminals on his own, with very funny results. I found this to be a good comedy film which i would recommend to people of all ages as it is rated PG so it is suitable for everyone to watch.

Very well made entertaining movie
I found myself glued to the television despite my inability to understand most of the early dialog in The 13th Warrior. Curiosity kept me from turning away and the action hooked me. Antonio Banderas’ performance is intelligent and understated. He may headline, but the unknown actors take the lead with very strong performances. Omar Sharif is certainly recognizable, but of limited exposure here. It’s sad that he belittled such a great movie because of it’s box office failure. This movie has a LOTR feel about it without the high end production. The production here is just right for the story and cast. The main attraction over LOTR is that it only runs 103 minutes. Beware, if you are easily affected by carnage. But, if you enjoy a classic tale of good vs. evil and competitive action, you will embrace this adventure.

“Tenderness” Plot Summary
A policeman (Crowe) works to figure out whether a violent teen (Foster) murdered his family.
Tragic story with excellent unknown leads, plus Crowe and Dern.
**Warning: Spoilers** I cannot believe the level of odium and hate directed toward this movie and its director based on two constrained mediocre Hollywood efforts. Polson has made more than these movies, and this is a return to the smaller, sharper works he first made in Aust
Let’s get a few things straight: it is slow, but not boring: it’s a drama, not a thriller. Both unknown leads act exceptionally well and both Hollywood stars are well behind them, Crowe’s grimly silent cop and Dern’s anxious, grieving Aunt
The motivations of both characters are also not opaque, or never seen: we know Eric has killed before – the cop knows of one and suspects him of a separate unsolved case we see him leafing thru in a diner
Lori has been abused before (‘my mom has always kinda been a perv magnet’) – she has to strip for her store manager, and lock her bathroom door against her mother’s boyfriend’s eyes. He has forced her to sex at least once. She has also been abused by Eric, less directly: she saw him kiss and kill the girl he strangled. When his mother suspected something, Eric killed her, and then his father, in their large middle-class home. Eric went to prison for these crimes, never connecting the young girl who became obsessed with him, scrapbooking his case ardently in an attempt to escape her mundane, working-class life
He is released to live with his dead mother’s sister: he prays, is apparently reformed, tho’ very restrained without being overtly cold and sociopathic: supposedly going to start a new life, try college. He has flashbacks, perhaps he is remorseful: Crowe’s Lt. Cristofuoro is sure he will kill again, and tells him so. Cristofuoro has a silent, bedridden wife in a hospital: terminally ill and on oxygen, we see him watching videos of them before her illness, while he massages and washes her
Eric is set up before release in juvenile detention by Cristofuoro and the authorities: they slip in a girl from the female section of the centre, whom he sees; later someone slips him a note purporting to be from her, and once released he phones Maria to arrange meeting at Funland, an entertainment park upstate from Buffalo NY.Lori (She says her full name is Lorelei – a German creature who lures men to their deaths in rivers) runs away from home: stands beside the media outside his Aunts’: when he leaves to meet Maria, he’s shocked to find her sleeping in his car: Eric thinks Lori’s a plant by Cristofuoro or the media; she knows who he is and can’t believe he doesn’t remember her. Their progress thru spring upstate New York toward Maria is an anxious road movie, followed by Cristofuoro
Eric is tormented by memories, tries to ditch Lori repeatedly: never warms to her, once nearly kills her. After another confronting scene, she reveal she saw him kill the girl: how beautiful and tender it was: loves him, wants him to strangle her ‘With your hands.’ Lori is devastated when Eric won’t
At Funland, with Lori in tow, Eric meets Maria, is led away to the river by her: Lori sees from the roller-coaster: intervenes, drives off Maria and reveals the bushes full of cops. They are questioned but released: he’s aware, now or before, of the trap; Lori is aware of what he is, despite all Cristofuoro’s warnings. Eric and Lori return to the state park where he almost strangled her upon remembering who she was; where they saw couples boating. She convinces him to take them out onto the lake: they argue, she doesn’t think things can change: we have no idea if he does, or if he knew Maria was a plant. Lori jumps into the lake, he follows to save her, aware she cannot swim: she drowns and he is remorseful: he didn’t want to kill her, he wishes they had never met again. Eric returns to prison for her murder, tho’ Cristofuoro knows him innocent of this, but guilty of killing the other girls
It’s worth remembering that tho’ Eric is clearly a serial killer, Lori is certainly seriously disturbed (partly as a result of what she saw him do), and in the beginning, at meeting, and at the end, the only thing that can make Lori happy is for him to kill her: not sex, not love, not friendship, not leave or rescue, not even rape: the _only_ way she feels he can love her is to kill her. Which he refuses to do, except in the State Park restroom, before we suspect or are told this is what she wants
Lori is not trying to torment Eric, reform him, punish him, rescue him, or herself. She wants what he gave the girl he killed. He wants the power of seeing a life fade, the sexual high of making it happen. This wonderfully scripted, shot and acted film is a tragedy, not a thriller: expect the odd moment of tension, but pity all their ruined lives
P’raps the most tragic thing (aside from the legacy of abuse she carries) is that while not naive, Lori has never had curry before, never seen a Chinese-American cop, never learned to swim.

“The Informant!” Plot Summary
The U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre.
Wow! What a ride; lot’s of memories The Informant!
The beauty of the film is Matt Damon without question. Starring in so many action/dramas of late, it’s great to see him going the comedy route. The guy was in Kevin Smith films and hammed it up in the Ocean’s movies as well, but here he has center stage to show the kind of chops he has in the genre. With hair resembling a bad toupee and a pedophilic moustache, his Whitacre is mid-90s businessman elite, only with a conscience sort of. A lover of crime films and courtroom dramas, he begins to live his life as though he is in one himself. When describing what is going on to the FBI at one point, he breaks out with the line, ‘It’s like Rising Sun, the Crichton novel,’ or during a voice-over he begins to compare everything to The Firm. He sees that his company, a corn producer and therefore having its hands in pretty much every consumer product on the market, is criminally involved with competitors to fix prices and steal from their respective publics. Wanting to be the hero and save the dayhopefully with an endgame of being the only person left and in effect handed the companyhe decides to fabricate a story to get the FBI in his sights and then pounces, taking part in a two year sting operation to bring Archer Daniels Midland down
Soderbergh was live and in person at the TIFF screening I attended and, after being introduced as having been there twenty years previous with his debut feature, said, ‘(There’s) no sex, no videotapes, but enough lies to last another twenty years.’ And boy was he right. As the movie progresses, you not only become aware of the lies being told in the company, but also the information Whitacre himself is withholding from the FBI, then from his lawyers, and inevitably from everyone. By the end, you can’t help but wonder what exactly was the truththe whole thing is just one big lie. I would love to know what the real Whitacre thinks about this representation. Does he enjoy the exaggerated caricature? Does he hate it because the imbecilic nature at the core of Damon’s role hits too close to home? The activities portrayed are so off the wall and zany that I have to believe screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and Soderbergh just used the outline of fact and made it completely their own. My only complaint would be that it goes maybe ten to twenty minutes too long, finding a repetition that soon becomes obvious and lacking of the witty charm of the start
With a cast of familiar faces and even some comic greatsThe Smothers Brothersit is still Damon that shines above all. His delivery is priceless and his facial expressions genuinely childlike in their enthusiasm. The entire film has him playing this game, unaware of how deep he was getting in and unaware that his extracurricular activities, to be exposed towards the end, made him a hypocrite. As long as he is the center of attention, being the man in the white hat taking down the bad guys with his FBI cohorts in tow, nothing else matters. Speaking of the agents, how great is it seeing Scott Bakula sinking his teeth into a lengthy role again? His straightman to Damon’s goof could not be played more perfectly. And then you get Joel McHale of ‘The Soup’ fame to play the most serious government agent in the world? It’s just Soderbergh having fun with preconceptions, actually casting many comics in serious roles while Jason Bourne himself schlubs around with a permanent cheesy smile plastered on his face
What transpires is funny enough, if just due to the fact a huge criminal investigation is occurring with a moron at its center, risking exposure every second. So excited that he is starring in his own version of all the sitcom television and pulp Hollywood movies he enjoys, the wonderment of having his own tape recorder hidden in his briefcase necessitates him to show someone how cool it is. He is 0014 after all, twice as smart as 007. But what works even better than the actual story is his mind itself. The epitome of Attention Deficit Disorder, Mark Whitacre loses his train of thought on a regular basis. At first you think you may be missing something as a character responds to a question and Damon’s voice-over drowns it out. While important information is being relayed, all we hear are the ramblings of a crazy man, the most mundane things popping into his head as he smiles and nods. Some of these one-liners are so great you almost watch what’s happening to get to the next tangent his brain wanders off towards
So, whether or not the film itself is an accurate portrayal of the subject matter it’s based on is a moot point. The real subject becomes finding out what will happen to Whitacre when the dust settles. Naive to the core, we all know he is due a wakeup call at some point, even if his FBI handlers think he is the bravest man in America doing it all because he has a wife and kids and a sense of moral responsibility. If only they knew he just did it for the rush of excitement and because he couldn’t think past step number one. Why comprehend that unearthing all the wheelings and dealings of a company he held a high position with could cost him his career when you can just enjoy the present and have fun living a duplicitous life? Do not feel sorry for him and do not question his motiveshe really doesn’t have any. Just take a seat and be ready to laugh hard.

Excellence in Filmmaking
This movie had me laughing; crying; smiling; staring; anticipating; everything. When I viewed the voter history for this movie, I couldn’t believe the rating it had received after 13,400 registered users had voted. This movie was excellent from the direction to the production sets. The acting was superb by all but could not and would not have been as great if it had not been for the vision of the director. I gave this movie a ten because it deserves it everywhere. The scenes, the sequences, the editing were all great. Though I’m not involved in the movie industry yet, I try to observe details in a production that make a good, bad, or great movie. In this case everything fell into place. The music for certain scenes was perfect. The characters were extremely believable. Everyone in the lead and supporting roles deserve an award of some type. I’m a 49 year old male with two grown kids and two grandchildren but I’m not ashamed to say I was filled with emotion as I watched this film. I believe a film should consume the viewer- to me that’s great filmmaking. If I can leave my seat or carry on a conversation while watching a film, it’s not great- it might be good, but not great. Jerry Maguire had my undivided attention. Kudos to everyone involved in the production of this movie. I waited four years to see this movie which I finally purchased on VHS cassette two or three months ago. It was a worthy investment and I will soon purchase it on DVD. Excellent, excellent, excellent!!!
