“The Rocker” Movie Review

“The Rocker” Plot Summary

The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame. Robert “Fish” Fishman…

Surprisingly enjoyable

The best news here is that Christina Applegate is still hot and Rainn Wilson has escaped from ‘The Office’ effectively. He is a comedic talent with promise

This is a tight little flick that works for what is is. The story flows well and the cast works together comfortably. Looks like they enjoyed the project

The directing and editing are spot-on. This simple low-budget comedy is very well done

There should be another set of awards for films like this. Not Oscars (maybe Felixes), for meticulously crafted smaller films that do what films are supposed to do – entertain.

“Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” Movie Review

“Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” Plot Summary

A bachelor is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends at his younger brother’s wedding.

Not a bad movie.

Not a bad movie, but I have to watch it another time. I thinks a second viewing will give me a better opinion. The story is a bit weak but Mat is a good actor and makes the film better. Mike D as uncle Wayne adds much comic relief. We see that Uncle Wayne should have never brought up kids, and this is the thesis which drives the story. I would wait and rent the movie or Video on demand it. The movie is not for kids. I would give Ghosts of girlfriends past a six out of ten. Maybe, I would like the movie on a second viewing. I found the characters a little to sleazy for my liking. There was not very likable character in this film.

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” Plot Summary

Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

    Good Family Fantasy

In the first outing for Harry Potter, he learns of his descent from a magical background and enrols at the school of witchcraft and wizardry ‘Hogwarts’Largely character building this magical adventure takes Harry and his new friends, Hermione (a very talented young Witch) and Ron (Harry’s best friend) on a quest for the Philosopher’s stone, a powerful stone wanted by the murderer of Harry’s parents (Voldomort)Not having read the books, i can’t make any comparisons, but even as a stand alone movie, this makes a fine fantasy adventure, fun for all ages. The characters are great, the scenery is wonderful and there is enough magical enchantment to charm and entertain all of us.8/10

    “The Soloist” Movie Review

    “The Soloist” Plot Summary

A Los Angeles journalist befriends a homeless Julliard-trained musician, while looking for a new article for the paper.

    Interesting to know

I am a musician and live in France, where the release date of this movie is scheduled for Sept. 2 2009. I obviously cannot write a review at the present time but have nevertheless read the book

What no one mentions in all of the above comments is that Nathaniel Ayers was originally a Double Bass student at Julliard and NOT a cellist. That instrument– along with the violin, trumpet, and piano, all came about later on. Put any instrument into his hands and he’ll do his best to master it. Having attended Yale university, I did not know him personally, even though we studied with one of the greatest bass teachers in the New York area at that time: Homer Mensch. Recently our paths did finally cross thanks to one of our mutual acquaintances, bassist and composer Joe Russo. Nathan likes to write down the names of his long lost good friends on walls, or any writing surface, and Joe’s name is always there, scribbled amongst his favorites. This was where Steve noticed Joe’s name and Googled him to look up his website. A new and close friendship resulted between them, and the many anecdotes that Joe pulled out of Nathan’s past were worth their weight in gold to Steve, enough to devote the entire chapter 8 of the book to Joe!To me, reading this book made me come to the conclusion that every man has his hour in life, and Nathan’s time had come now. The chances of 2 men, one homeless and one not, being pulled together through the sound of a violin in a rush hour tunnel, were undoubtedly written in the stars. Through articles, a book and now a film on Nathan, Steve helped uplift a poor and abandoned part of society to a rank that it never imagined nor asked for, but morally deserved. We all know that the Internet is indeed capable of connecting and reconnecting people in the present, but only music can magically, throughout time, open the doors that connect all of us to one another.

“The Last King of Scotland” Movie Review

“The Last King of Scotland” Plot Summary

Based on the events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s

    Great Acting! and Gillian Anderson!

I like movies based on real people in history. Because of the Oscar buzz surrounding Forest Whitaker now, I knew this movie is about Idi Amin. This is of course a familiar name in my childhood (asked in General Information contests), but I don’t really know much about him, except that he was a dictator

This film has a documentary feel to it. It is really very realistic, even if upon reading background info that the Dr. Garrigan character is fictional. Even though granted that the Idi Amin regime was compressed into a coherent Hollywood storyline, it does not feel contrived. The final sequence of events at the Entebbe Airport was very suspenseful indeed

Idi Amin was not really the lead character in this movie. It is actually Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. Being a physician, I could not help but be able to identify with his situation and dilemmas. Would you accept to be the personal physician of a country’s president upon his personal request? It seems to be an offer and career opportunity you could not refuse

There is sex and violence in this movie. I could not agree though with Dr. Garrigan’s rashness regarding his love affairs, particularly his morals of hooking up with wives of his supposed friends. But considering that this movie is set in the 1970s, that was a totally different world pre-HIV. The violence, what can I say? After watching one violent film after the other, you get sort of anesthetized already. That said, the scene with hooks at the airport was still something else! The acting is very good. Forest Whitaker has channeled the Idi Amin persona very effectively. I could feel the scary and suffocating craziness whenever he is on screen. There’s something about this performance being based on a real character though. I think it would be harder to essay a totally fictional character since you have to create this new character from scratch. And I feel James McAvoy (who was actually Mr. Tumnus in ‘Narnia’!) did so very well as Dr. Garrigan. You dislike him, yet you can empathize the stickiness of his situation

Before I end this review, I have to mention that I was very happy to see the luminous Ms. Gillian Anderson again. I totally did not know she was in this film and it was a welcome surprise. She handled her few scenes as the wife of a volunteer doctor very well indeed. I hope she gets meatier movie roles in the future.

    “Superbad” Movie Review

    “Superbad” Plot Summary

Two co-dependent high school seniors are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry.

Definitely the best Apatow-group film yet

I enjoyed ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ but didn’t feel it was entirely worthy of all the enormous acclaim it garnered. And for all the praise ‘Knocked Up’ received, I thought it was fairly average. So I wasn’t expecting much from ‘Superbad.’ However, I’d have to say it’s the smartest and funniest Apatow film yet. I know he didn’t direct it, but his influence is distinct. And in the past I’ve felt indifferent towards Apatow’s brand of humour, but combined with Rogen’s sensitivity towards the teen condition here, it works really well

People have compared it to John Hughes’ better teen comedies, but I don’t think the approach is entirely similar. ‘Superbad’ is cruder, ruder, a bit more focused on the sex & alcohol jokes. But it works really well because it captures that dynamic – better than ‘American Pie’ because it invests more care into its characters. One of the strengths of ‘Pie’ over other films in its genre (such as, say, ‘Slackers’) has always been its characters, and ‘Superbad’ similarly relies on its characters for support. Plus, it’s just really funny

The performances all around are pretty funny, even if the Fogell/McLovin pop culture references are ruining a good joke (kind of like ‘Yeah, baby!!’ ruined Austin Powers when 20-year-old frat boys around the country thought it would be funny to shout the phrase every five seconds).

Jonah Hill and Michael Cera have great chemistry and another one of the strengths of this film is that its teenage characters actually do look their age (even though Hill is in his early 20s, he still passes as a senior). But it was Bill Hader and Seth Rogen who stole the show for me as the clueless cops

Overall this is just a funny, well-made film with heart. It doesn’t mock its characters or their predicaments but casts a knowing eye on the high school experience. It captures all this very well and was certainly, in my opinion, far superior to ‘Knocked Up.’

    “Zombieland” Movie Review

    “Zombieland” Plot Summary

The horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies…

    Fantastic, offbeat

Zombieland is a gleefully twisted mockumentary about a world full of you-know-whats, wherein only five living people remain in the entire world. Its gory and disgusting, but most of all, its terrific fun, with just the right mix of violence and off-kilter comedy

Jesse Eisenberg plays a young man named Columbus (because thats where hes heading, across the wasteland that is the middle US). Columbus is scared of just about everything: clowns, the cloths people use to wipe down tables, bathrooms, you name it. A hot apartment neighbor comes down with this hot new disease that all the cool kids dont want to have, and before you know it hes killed her (well, rekilled) and is on the run, fleeing zombies and making up a long list of rules of how to survive in the eponymous new land. Near the beginning of our story, he meets up with a man he calls Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), whos, uh, on his way to Tallahassee, and they in turn meet with a couple of con girls (Abagail Breslin and Emma Stone).

Comparisons to Shaun of the Dead are somewhat apt, as both movies are comedic takes on a horror subgenre, and director Ruben Fleischer was influenced by the Simon Pegg-Nick Frost movie. But. Zombieland is both funnier and more sincere; its not a slapstick comedy, and its not really a horror film, as Shaun of the Dead was. In fact, its sort of quirky and genreless

There were a LOT of laugh-out-loud moments for me in this movie, and I think a chief reason it all gels is that the leads are so perfectly cast. Eisenberg is awesome as the protagonist, the vulnerable hero, and Harrelson is a real hoot as the Mad-Max-like (or maybe Ash from Evil Dead) gentle psycho who desires nothing more than to waste zombies and find one, just one, Twinkie. Yes, I said Twinkie! I also really liked Abagail Breslin as the moppet Little Rock. Its always tough for child actors to make the transition into more-adult roles, but shes up to the task here. Emma Stone is tough and sweet as her sisterly counterpart

Theres a cameo thatll surely surprise you and whats more, it really works. The actor no spoilers here! really sells the role. Lets just say that he plays himself. Did I mention that the main characters are headed to California and that basically everyone else in the world is either dead or a zombie? Everyone? You dont often hear people applaud during a movie, but applaud we did at a couple key moments. The final scene in an amusement park is witty and lighthearted, at least as lighthearted as mowing down zombies with machine guns can be

Now, granted, theres plenty of blood splattering, plenty of gore, plenty of cursing, and even some nudity. And yes, its even gratuitous. But not for a zombie movie. For a zombie movie, those things are sort of underplayed a little bit, at least in the true horror sense theyre played much more for chuckles than anything else. If anything, Zombieland is a movie that dares you to take it seriously, just so it can pull the rug out from under you and we can all laugh. Its an offbeat look at an overused genre that cranks out the guts and guffaws in equal, lethal doses.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” Movie Review

“HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban” Plot Summary

It’s Harry’s third year at Hogwarts; not only does he have a new “Defense Against the Dark Arts” teacher, but there is also trouble brewing. Convicted murderer Sirius Black has escaped the Wizards’ Prison and is coming after Harry.

    Best of the three

Although this film isn’t all that I’d hoped it would be, I believe that it was the best of the three ‘Harry Potter’ films so far, thanks largely due to director Alfonso Cuaron. In ‘Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban’, the trio are now thirteen and beginning their Third Year at Hogwarts, under the fear of an escaped criminal who played a part in the deaths of Harry’s parents and seems to be stalking the school, preying on Harry

The child acting in this film has improved slightly with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint probably faring the best in comparison to their young co-stars. Although he is lumbered with a Ron who has once again been reduced to a comic character, it’s a sign of Grint’s abilities that he does well without looking embarrassed or too clownish. Dan Radcliffe was still very poor, obviously struggling to portray Harry’s darker emotions in a manner that isn’t wooden and awkward and and this was very apparent in the scene where he makes an atrocious effort to cry when he finds out his godfather had betrayed his parents to their deaths. while Tom Felton was let down by poor scripting of Draco

The adult cast were excellent. Remus Lupin and Sirius Black were perfectly cast. Lupin was soft yet stern when needed and you could feel there was a parental rapport between him and Harry, and I couldn’t imagine anyone other than David Thewlis in the role. And Gary Oldman was great in depicting Black’s determination, mingled with an hysterical madness due to his incarceration in the hellish wizarding prison Azkaban. As for Michael Gambon, who was recast in the role of Dumbledore, I felt he was an improvement. Richard Harris was a gifted actor but his Dumbledore had a cold, aloofness to him whereas Gambon was able to portray the warm, eccentricity of the character without diminishing the power and wisdom of Dumbledore. And the rest of the regular cast, such as Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith, were perfect although we expect no better from them now!One of the best aspects of this film is how it no longer pandered to kiddies like the previous two films did. There was a darker, moodier edge to the story and the characters. The wizarding world no longer seemed like a perfect haven and the characters had grown beyond being innocent children; this reflected the book itself since many feel PoA was a turning point in the series where it finally felt like Harry Potter- boy and book- were growing up. The Hogwarts’ setting differed from the previous films yet not only was it definitely more faithful to the books but finally it felt as if the castle was in Scotland rather than perpetually sunny Disney Land and this enhanced the mood being set in the film. The clock was a nice touch, linking to the theme of time in the actual storyline, as was the bridge in being a place for Harry to mull over his problems. Also, in many ways, this film could have ended up a muddled mess in regards to the ending but Cuaron handled the Time Turner scenes well

However, there were flaws to the film, which let it down. The characters of Hermione and Draco were poorly scripted so they seemed like two completely different characters from the ones we know and love in the books. Although Watson as an actress has improved since CoS, the main problem with the script is that Hermione is being portrayed as being too cool and cocky compared to the bookworm who has no interest in fashion that we know Hermione to be in the books. Steve Kloves, the scriptwriter who admits he’s responsible for the change, really needs to learn heroines don’t need to be cool Buffy types to be admired; part of why Hermione is so popular as a character in the books is that she appeals to girls who are bookish themselves and easily identify with her. And as for Draco, he comes across as too much of a cowardly, weak girlie-boy rather than an insidious, vicious brat who can be a threat to Harry when he chooses to. Also, there was no telling of what Black did to Snape in school that left him so bitter in his hatred and I wished they’d included the scene where he let slip what Lupin was, especially as this animosity between him, Black and Lupin plays a larger role as the books go on. And speaking of Lupin, the werewolf CGI was atrocious. He looked like an emaciated rat rather than the wolf-like creature who leaves even the more powerful wizards quivering in fear. I wished there was more in the ending too as I would have loved to see Vernon’s face when he found out who Black was. Kloves needs to learn how to round the Harry Potter films off properly as this was also a sticking point in CoS.At the end of the day, there were scenes left out, some of which we didn’t mind skipping but others (an explanation to Harry of James Potter’s friendship to Black and Lupin) were sorely missed. It was a great film but it could have done with being made longer or skipping on non-essential scenes (less of the Knight Bus and Hermione punching Malfoy in a manner that makes her out to be a thug) to make way for scenes which are more important. I think I was disappointed because I was expecting something along the lines of RotK but it’s still great viewing. I’d give it a seven-and-a-half out of ten with the hopes Cuaron will return to the helm again although preferably not with Kloves as the scriptwriter. I think Cuaron would be excellent working with a script produced by someone who has a better handle on the darker aspects of the books and a deeper understanding of the HP characters.

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” Movie Review

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” Plot Summary

Famed archaeologist/adventurer Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones is called back into action when he becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.

    The adventure continues

(Minor spoilers) This is the first Indy film I got to see in a movie theater so I must say I was very excited when I arrived for a midnight screening. I don’t intend to write down an overly long introduction paragraph because most people will know who Indiana Jones is and if you don’t you should watch those movies immediately

Having said that I do feel the need to refer to Raiders of the Lost Ark when writing about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Raiders started out as one idea being that of an action hero involved in a truck chase. After the action was written, they added a story. It seems like they did it the other way around this time as none of the action scenes are as memorable as the ones you’ve seen in the previous movies. They’re great, of course, but not instant classics like the boulder scene in raiders and the mine car chase in Temple of Doom and it sometimes feels as if the action is too uninspired. I sometimes felt like they needed to go a little bit more over the top but when they did, they kind of went too much over the top

Now the fans might think ‘Hey, wait a minute! I like the franchise, don’t bitch about it too much!’ To those fans I want to say that the reason I focus on the negative is because most of the negative reviews don’t cover the negative aspects of the film but rather Ford’s age and that this movie is ‘more of the same’. Now that I’ve seen the movie I can only assume that those negative reviews were written before the critics saw the movie because Ford’s age is really not an issue here and it seems like they miss the real flaws of the movie. The biggest flaw is that Indy finds clues which lead him to the next clue until he finally reaches his final destination with the greatest of ease, National Treasure style. Instead of trying to keep up with the villains, he’s always a step ahead until they finally catch him after which Indy escapes again by using his fists instead of his wit. Another flaw that many people will disagree with is that the jungle is not a good place for an adventure movie because it’s done too often

But there’s a reason I gave the movie an eight (I would give it a 7.5 if IMDb would let me). George Lucas said that the movie would be the same as the others but based on the movies of the fifties instead of serials from the thirties. However, the fifties and the thirties are so different that I don’t think it would have been possible to make this movie the same. It’s set in the fifties and the movie is made as if it were the fifties instead of 2008. People who studied film history will know what that means and some typical 1950s stuff, like paranoia caused by the communist threat, is present in the movie as well

I don’t want to spoil too much but I must warn the big Indy fans that this movie is different. Be prepared for everything so you won’t have a giant WTF floating above your head when the movie reaches its climax. It’s not as different as Phantom Menace was compared to the original Star wars trilogy so don’t expect too much unnecessary CGI. There is still a lot of stunt work and good humor and the acting is very good.
