    “The Rock” Movie Review

    “The Rock” Plot Summary

A group of U.S. marines, under command of a renegade general, take over Alcatraz and threat San Francisco Bay with biological weapons. A chemical weapons specialist and the only man to have ever escaped from the Rock are the only ones who can prevent chaos. add synopsis

    ‘The Rock’ rocks!

Every time I see ‘The Rock,’ I’m reminded of why I love action movies. They just can’t seem to get any better than this. I may get slammed by others for proclaiming such strong admirations for such a movie, but it’s squarely my opinion. But to remove myself from opinion and move in the direction toward known fact, ‘The Rock’ is an essential action film for any action-film fan

Three years ago I bought the last remaining Criterion Collection DVD at my local video store and I can see now beyond the horizon that another edition of this masterpiece probably isn’t coming any time soon. It is squarely the best film ever done by music video champ-turned-big-budget-Hollywood-music-video-director Michael Bay and the last film ever produced by the Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer duo (Simpson died shortly before ‘The Rock’ was released and the film is dedicated in his memory).

But ‘The Rock’ is all about one thing: entertainment, and nothing else. It’s a hell of a ride from start to finish with plenty ‘o explosions, humor, car chases, and one-liners supplied in a dynamite script by Douglas Cook, Mark Rosner, and David Weisberg (that also contains un-credited work from Quentin Tarantino). Even after this praise, you are, naah, you’re not, still interested in seeing why ‘The Rock’ is so essential, are you?To put it like this, the action begins with General Francis ‘Frank’ R. Hummel (Ed Harris) having a vigil at his wife’s grave and tells her that he is about to make a haste decision in the name of the many men who have died under his command and were consequently forgotten by the American government

So he and his men stage a daring heist at a military depot and make off with 16 rockets loaded with deadly V-X gas, which in the words of one of the film’s characters, ‘Is one of the deadliest substances known to man.’ Their next move is to make a point that they aren’t to be toyed with anymore. So Frank stages a hostage takeover at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay. He tells the kids that are part of a tour group to head back to the boats while the 88 hostages are held in the prison’s cells

Hummel demands the government make restitutions to the surviving family members of every man who has given his life for this country and if they aren’t met, San Francisco will be reduced to nothing but a giant cloud of poison gas. The Pentagon and assorted officials know the score: they know that Hummel knows he isn’t to be messed with and they take his demands seriously

A plan is put into effect: a SEAL team is dispatched to try to retake the island, but there is one catch. No one alive knows the inner workings of Alcatraz prison. No one knows, except John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man known to have escaped the infamous island and lived to tell about it. But he’s under maximum security incarceration because in the eyes of one F.B.I. Director John Womack (the late John Spencer), he knows all of America’s most ‘intimate’ secrets (including who really shot JFK) and allowing Mason to be on the loose would be a pretty bad idea

There is a third prong: an F.B.I. lab rat with no field experience, Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage), is also assigned, and with Mason in tow, they’ll accompany the SEALs to Alcatraz to try to dismantle the rockets and Hummel. Of course Goodspeed is reluctant but because a baby is on the way with his longtime girlfriend, he decides he has no choice but to go

From then on, you know the game since any attempt to further describe the plot would be an exercise in futility: lots of people get shot, firefights, and breakneck pacing that’s trademark of one Mr. Bay and any film produced by a certain Mr. Bruckheimer. What keeps this boat afloat is the dynamic and unlikely partnering of Connery and Cage, who both know their roles well and play off one another, add to the other’s performance like old friends as they navigate through Alcatraz’s labyrinth of dark tunnels and sewers. Ed Harris is even given a third dimension in his villain role that elevates him above the typical action-movie bad guy. He’s a soldier with a chip on his shoulder and his argument is quite convincing (I almost bought into myself). But his true motives later become the subject of a rather colorful and inventive plot twist late in the film.’The Rock’ is why we go to theaters for action in the first place. My view: ‘The Rock’ rocks, big time

Just check it out to see.10/10

    “Marley and Me” Plot Summary

A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.

Best film of the holiday season

Short-attention-span synopsis: Best film of the holiday season

Marley & Me (PG, 2:00) 9I felt bad having to deliver the news to my fellow fans about what a poor crop of SF&F films we have to pick from this holiday season, so let me make it up to you by giving a totally unqualified recommendation for Marley & Me! It’s not science fiction. Heck, it’s barely fiction at all, since it’s drawn from the real-life experiences of newspaper columnist John Grogan, his wife Jen, their kids, and their yellow labrador retriever, Marley, ‘the worst dog in the world’.I do some database work for the Wisconsin Academy of Graduate Service Dogs, and I have to say that Marley would have washed out of the academy in 15 minutes. He’d be a terrible service dog, but he makes a wonderful friend

This film is utterly realistic. It never strikes a forced or false note. There are lots of laffs, but they all arise organically out of real life. John and Jen are good, decent people (like virtually all Americans), and they behave naturally, without any visible ‘acting’. It’s a little slice of Americana. If a big-budget spectacular like Benjamin Button had been able to muster a quarter of the heart of this modest film, they’d already be rolling Oscar’s red carpet up to its front door.’I'd like to be the man my dog thinks I am.’ — Mike McGuire, songwriter

    “Commando” Plot Summary

A retired elite commando has only a few hours to find and rescue his daughter from an exiled dictator.

    Probably the best action film.

Commando is in my mind the best action film out there to date, this movie was made 14 years ago and no other film can push it out of first position

The film got everything: a great looking Arnold, extremely fine music by James Horner and great settings for the action scenes. It`s a great ride of perfection when it comes to entertaining action fans. Rae Dawn Chong and Alyssa Milano gives fine performances as well.

    “Donnie Darko” Movie Review

    “Donnie Darko” Plot Summary

A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident.

One of the greatest cinematic achievements

Donnie Darko tells the story of a delusional teenager who begins to see visions of a a man in a blue bunny suit, who orders him to do certain tasks through suggestive clues and voices, to which he insists he MUST do, or the world will end

Now, really, this is a movie you must see to get the plot, if I were to give the full, detailed, complex plot it would take far too long (And will probably you leave you more stumped) to which reveals the majestic brilliance of Donnie Darko; which is that their are endless amounts of theories and interpretations, making it one of the most thought-provoking fantasy of recent years

The acting is superb (Maggie Ghyllenhal, Jake Ghyllenhal and Drew Barrymore to name a few), the music is perfect, subtle and atmospheric and the fantastic direction, coupled with a roller-coaster ride of a storyline will leave you of utmost interest and intrigue like no other movie. Not only that, but you will find yourself watching it more than a few times, as it will stick in your mind until you reveal your own personal interpretation (To which you may experience a Donnie Darko ‘phase’ which I did, warning: It WILL take up a sizable chunk of your life).

But adding to the already deep and complex storyline, there are also a vast amount of underlying themes, most noticeable the character Patrick Swayze plays, in which it represents a false ’superior’, referring clearly to religion

Donnie Darko is truly a classic, one of my favorite films and I recommend it to anyone. Incredible.

“The Emperor’s New Groove” Movie Review

“The Emperor’s New Groove” Plot Summary

Emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his ex-administrator Yzma, and must now regain his throne with the help of Pacha, the gentle llama herder. add synopsis

    Funny and highly original film.

I really enjoyed this movie. After some almost disastrous attempts at direct to video sequels, I was hugely surprised to see for once a wonderfully funny and highly original film. The animation is spot on, with beautiful backgrounds and well-drawn characters that are also likable. They are also very funny, especially Kronk, who looked similar to Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. The music by John Debney and Sting was hip and memorable. Usually in direct to video sequels(which of course this is not) the songs are just awful, and sound like they were improvised in five minutes. A good example is Cinderella 2. The songs here have funny lyrics, are well sung and sound as though the composers took some extreme lengths to make it perfect. The voice talents are exceptional. David Spade’s acting ability is somewhat limited but for this type of character, a selfish emperor called Kuzco who is turned into a llama by his adviser, it works wonderfully. John Goodman was very earnest as Pacha, and the villainess Yzma, who I would pick over the really bland Morgana from the Little Mermaid sequel any day, was played to perfection by Eartha Kitt. The script is funny and touching, and while sometimes it isn’t as laugh-out-loud funny as some animated films, it has a huge impact on the well told story. I have no real criticism for this movie, other than it is probably too short. Anyway 9/10. Bethany Cox.

    Very funny movie!

I saw this movie last night for the first time and I was laughing my head off from the beginning to the end

IThis movie has a lot of gags and I had to run to the toilet cos I wet myself with laughter and i had to gasp for air cos i was laughing so hard

From reading the negative reviews on this site – I don’t know why people hate this movie? it is so funny! it was one of my favorite movies starring Adam Sandler

I thought the best performances were from Sandler and Rock. This movie is really good but I really like the original movie better

I thought this remake was a lot more funnier than the original

If you love Adam Sandler and Chris Rock then you will love this movie

Def the most funniest movie I have seen in 2010.

I also really liked the soundtrack 10/10 for a great comedy movie

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” Plot Summary

A young boy wins a tour through the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world, led by the world’s most unusual candy maker.

my favorite movie of the year

when i first went to the screening for this movie i was expecting it to be crap like the trailers suggested but i was surprised by how well made it is. this is an amazing movie that shows director Burton at his best. you all know the story by now so i won’t waste time going over it. what i love about this movie is how they kept the things that made the original movie great and also added in their own wonderful stuff. the trailers and TV ads make Wonka look like an idiot or some freak but he’s actually a pretty sweet man that’s funny as hell. the kids are great too, although they get a bit annoying at times. danny elfman’s music was also well done, it’s not as good as the one he did for scissorhands but it still holds it own and the set design was amazing from start to finish.this is a great movie that’s well shot and done in every way. it might just be the first remake since dawn of the dead that doesn’t suck
