“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” Movie Review

“Spirit” Plot Summary

As a wild stallion travels across the frontiers of the Old West, he befriends a young human and finds true love with a mare.

Great.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is an overall wonderful movie. The blending of animation types is unique, the storyline is amazing, and the music is wonderful

The drawn animation is a special thing about many animations. How they expressed the characters, especially the horses, through their animation are spectacular especially. While the way horses communicate through body language is easy to understand, many young children and people who haven’t studied horses might not understand. Without words, I would imagine it would have to be challenging to express them through the features. Because of this, I understand the ‘eyebrow’ they added to the horses (while real horses don’t have those thick lines). One of the few things I noticed about horse habits that might have been portrayed strangely is that Spirit lead his mother’s herd. In wild horse herds, the lead stallion usually chases the young colts out

Also, while some people might think portraying the white army officers as the ‘bad guys’ is stereotyping, think of all the movies in which the Native Americans have been portrayed as that. Sometimes back then; they did treat mustangs very poorly. For example, in real history, the Appaloosa breed was almost wiped out due to the Army officers. Imagine what would have happened to one of the worlds best loved riding breeds if the Native Americans had not saved them

I think it’s amazing how the realism wasn’t subtracted by making the horses talk to each other. Spirit’s feelings were expressed by a little bit of narration, but mostly through the music (by Bryan Adams). The songs express the story really well, and Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams did a great job telling the story through melodies and lyrics

The emotion I got when watching the movie, whether the first time or the twentieth (yes, I’ve watched it that much), you wouldn’t believe. Some of the scenes take your breath away, while others seem to force tears into your eyes. The opening sequence, showing Spirit’s homeland, puts you right into the spectacular action right away

I don’t understand at all why some people are so hateful of this brilliant movie. Overall, I rate it a 10/10 – a must watch.

“The Invasion” Movie Review

“The Invasion” Plot Summary

As a Washington psychiatrist unearths the origin of an alien epidemic, she also discovers her son might be the only way it can be stopped.

Don’t even bother to find fault with it

I don’t always listen to film critics but when three reasonably reliable ones all give this movie a 2/4, I should take heed. Why did I watch it then? I am a Nicole Kidman fan. Sure enough, Kidman was in every scene, if not every frame. But that was about it

I won’t even bother finding fault with this movie because it is so formulaic that it gives you everything you expect, which isn’t much. If you watch close to 200 movies a year (granted not all of them Hollywood), you have seen them all divorced professional mother with young (ten-ish) son and good-guy boyfriend, mass hysteria in which you just don’t know which one is a sinister ‘them’, just to name the two key elements. There is really nothing seriously wrong about this movie that a woman and her son have become the only people among thousands in the city that are unaffected is something that Hollywood expects you to accept without as much as a blink. Nor is the split-personality change (of the movie, I mean) from a dark, sinister suspense into a chaotic havoc of wild chases anything that you should really criticize because you’ve got to have these things in the movie. By the way, this movie is a sort of a partial remake of ‘Invasion of the body snatches’, if you don’t already know and whether it’s the fourth or the fifth depends on who you talk to

Yes, there are some good, damned good actors in the caliber of Daniel Craig, Jeremy Northam and Jeffrey Wright but in this movie they may as well be props. A terrible waste, you say, but these people got to have a paycheck every now and then too. So in the end, there’s just Kidman. This isn’t exactly her bid for another Oscar, but she does a fine job here, limited scope notwithstanding.

“The Golden Compass” Movie Review

“The Golden Compass” Plot Summary

In a parallel universe, young Lyra Belacqua journeys to the far North to save her best friend and other kidnapped children from terrible experiments by a mysterious organization.

Impressed and Very Satisfied

I am about 2 thirds of the way through the book when I decided to go to the limited engagement sneak preview of The Golden Compass. I feel that the film exceeded my expectations regardless of the structure change made by the film adaptation

The story was changed moderately, but not too much to take away from the mood of the book, and was in no way detrimental to the flow of the story. Otherwise, this movie was a roller-coaster ride from beginning to end! The effects exceeded my expectations. The flow of the daemons in the film was almost completely convincing, however there were times when the speech of the animals had that typical ‘computer animated falseness’ that you see in the cg cartoons. Other than some minor CG blemishes, the realism is some of the most convincing I have seen! The polar bear is completely lifelike and the animal morphing I felt was simply spectacular

The flow of the film is very fast, which is a negative and a positive. While it really leaves us guessing or feeling unfulfilled in some of the crucial story elements, it also sets the pace for an exhilarating fast-paced adventure story that keeps you on the edge! The broad range of characters prevents the film from truly developing the characters that we really WANT to know. Since the book is a 3 part series, hopefully these characters will develop further in the next 2 films

I must say that there were several parts in this film that surprised me, considering this is marketed as a family film. This is a dark film. This could frighten some small kids. I feel this film definitely belongs in the pg-13 rating, and might even be a bit much for a 13 year old for the more sheltering type parents. Not only can it be conceived as very violent, there are some very adult themes that could be considered questionable

Overall, this is a film I would like to see again, and I am DYING to see the next film in the series. I walked out of this film excited, satisfied and wanting more. Might want to leave the young ones at home, but you won’t regretting fighting for front row seats on a Friday night for this flick.

“Quantum of Solace” Movie Review

“Quantum of Solace” Plot Summary

Seeking revenge for the death of his love, secret agent James Bond sets out to stop an environmentalist from taking control of a country’s valuable resource.

This is the best product ever made

This is absolutely best product ever made. But I like movies and films, that’s why I rate this at 2. In addition, this product is made by either people with hyperactivity disorder or made for such people: the entire product is made up of sequences that last only fraction of a second: the action lasts only fraction of a second then the screen shows some other action unrelated to previous action. Thus, because the entire product is made from cuts of action that last only fraction of a second, the entire product is very hard to watch. For me, it caused dizziness and head spins. But hyperactive kids will probably find it amazing to watch: it is like watching those screen savers – Windows’ Mystify, StarField, and other flying in your face things that are hard to watch. But again, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

“The Tale of Despereaux” Movie Review

“The Tale of Despereaux” Plot Summary

The tale of three unlikely heroes – a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears – whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle’s princess.

We loved it.

The movie was Excellent. My son who is 2 1/2 was just so into it and not scared. They are just rats. Why is everyone so sensitive?! A lot of cartoons have animals that scare people in real life like snakes. Besides, based on personal experience, there was friend who would not let her son watch Ratatouille because of the rats, but then let him watch Dark Knight, hmmm? The mouse was so cute. I really enjoyed that this cartoon finally took a turn from what is usually out there. Right now we are stationed in Germany and the Europeans have a lot more cartoons like this. The graphics are just nicer. I do not have a problem with watching cartoons as long as they are not weird like the standard ones on TV today. For example, the digital mickey mouse. They are just not natural enough. I hope that many people will cherish this cartoon and go back to what used to be traditional Disney style and cartoons.

“Chicken Run” Movie Review

“Chicken Run” Plot Summary

Chicken Run is a comedy escape drama with a touch of passion set on a sinister Yorks chicken farm in 1950’s England add synopsis

The best movie of the summer!

Now, knowing what’s in store for us this summer, I am probably not out on a limb saying this, but this should be the best film this summer, if not this year

Full of wit, sight gags, homage to prison escape movies, yet completely adorable and exciting to even very young children, this movie has everything you would want in a movie. I was lucky enough to catch it at a sneak preview while on vacation with my 19-year-old son while in San Francisco, and even at the price of NINE BUCKS, it was worth it

All this and voices from two Ab Fab actresses!
