“Coraline” Movie Review

“Coraline & The Secret Door” Plot Summary

An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

Wonderfully animated; basically a ‘modern’ fairy tale…

If you like fairy tales, you will love this movie. This film has everything: story, funny characters, entertaining dialog, good scenes, beautiful animation and a nice moral

I loved Coraline. It’s a very kind, but also mysterious movie about a young girl who, by pure curiosity, travels to a parallel dimension of her house. There she meets her ‘other mother’ and ‘other father’. Everything is fantastic and everyone seems so nice. However, after awhile it becomes clear that a dark power is trying to lure Coraline away from her real family…There’s so much to tell about this movie, but I think it’s best that you go watch it yourself, before I spoil too much. Coraline is truly a wonderfully animated gem. It’s a movie you will watch again and again over the years, maybe as an annual tradition! 9 out of 10 stars!

“War of the Worlds” Movie Review

“War of the Worlds” Plot Summary

As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.

A good take on the Wells story. Better than the 1953 classic in some ways

First – a quick rebuttal: The peanut butter sandwich which seemed to stick to the window impossibly. This was a very visually interesting scene. In fact, the scene was shot from inside the house, and Cruise was shot in reflection against the window – so there is no problem here other than the reviewer not thinking what they were seeing through

Now on to the review…This film follows Tom Cruise – playing a not-very-adult divorced father – and his two kids through the Wellsian version of The War of the Worlds. Despite the fact that the film focuses exclusively on the harrowing experiences of this somewhat dysfunctional family, in a very basic way it preserves the elements of the original novel. As with Wells’ book, a science savvy viewer will pick up on the biological plausibility of the main plot and realize the brilliance of Wells original points. Scientifically educated viewers will also recognize the geological impossibility of it. Neither of these facts should detract from the entertainment value of this interesting and exciting film. After all, it is a testament to Wells’ genius that a novel written nearly 100 years ago still holds our attention today, and is still regarded as an intelligent take on improbable events

An alien species, about which nothing is really known, has been planning to take over and terraform earth for millenia, or perhaps much longer. Using unknown technology, they manage to emplace operatives in enormous tripod machines equipped with horrendous weapons that basically carbonize any life forms they take aim at. The tripods had been implanted deep in the earth long before the advent of our species. There simply is no stopping the invasion. Cruise, whose character is not really built for heroism, digs deep into his soul to protect his children as they attempt to make it to Boston to reunite with his estranged wife and her new family

Before I discuss the technical merits of the film, and the lavish production values, I feel that I need to make a comment on Dakota Fanning. Ms. Fanning gives one of the best performances I have ever seen a sub-12 year old give in The War of the Worlds. She is a match for Cruise, and actually manages to steal several scenes from him. The acting in this film is uniformly good, but Fanning really stood out

Spielberg and his team make seemingly impossible film visions come alive in a uniquely well realized manner. War of the Worlds is one of the most visually stunning films I have seen in a long time. Though I would not call the special effects innovative, they are, more importantly, convincing and never over-done. The nearly first person story telling technique is both original and effective, and the non-heroism of Cruise’s character makes for a much more compelling plot than I expected to see. There are indeed some problems with believability, but let me ask – why would anybody go to this film expecting something more realistic than a fairy tale?Recommended for Wells fans, fans of the original 1953 adaptation, and action sci-fi fans. Mildly recommended to the average cinema-goer.

    “Push” Movie Review

    “Push” Plot Summary

Two young Americans with special abilities must race to find a girl in Hong Kong before a shadowy government organization called Division does. |

    Very Enjoyable Action-Packed Sci-Fi Film

I had wanted to watch this film since I saw the trailer, but I missed the original theatrical run earlier this year. Luckily, there was a short return engagement in the theater this past week so I was finally able to watch as I planned, on the big screen.

The premise is very interesting. Chris Owen is Nick, a Mover who can move objects with his mind. Dakota Fanning is Cassie who is a Watcher who can see into the future. They join forces to help find Kira who is a Pusher, one who can control other peoples’ thoughts, and protect her from the shady US government agency called the Division.

It is like another incarnation of the X-Men with good guys and bad guys with very powerful psychic powers. We also meet Bleeders (who can scream so shrilly that blood vessels can burst), Sniffs (who can track people by smelling objects they used), Shifters (who can temporarily change perception of objects), Wipers (who can erase memories), Shadows (who can hide people around them from detection) and Stitchers(who can cure or cause injuries).

The movie is quite enjoyable to watch for its adrenaline rush. The main actors are all very good, especially Owen and Fanning. The action sequences are all very imaginatively conceived and executed. The plot is intricate and clever. They did not ignore the importance of the story behind the great special effects. When you watch this, don’t think too deeply and just enjoy the ride. It is certainly worth the time spent.

    “Man on Fire” Movie Review

    “Man on Fire” Plot Summary

In Mexico City, a former assassin swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

    Amazing, absolutely AMAZING

This movie blew me away; however not the first time I saw it, I had to watch it twice to truly appreciate the message and the power of this film. Maybe I wasn’t fully paying attention or maybe I was too young at the time but I am so glad that I watched it again

If ever there was perfect casting for a motion picture then this would be it! Denzel Washington is unbelievably believable, (then again when is he not believable) and even though Christopher Walken’s part is small in this you don’t forget him as he helps to develop the story and make Washington’s character even more electrifying. Also the supporting cast is more than solid with Marc Anthony and Radha Mitchell putting in very strong performances, with Mickey Rourke also worth a mention. However, this is all eclipsed by the youngest member of the cast, Dakota Fanning, who is indescribable as Pita. The chemistry between Washington ans Fanning shines off the screen and you laugh when they laugh, and cry when they cry

The direction is expertly done, but with such films as ‘Enemy of the State’ and ‘Crimson Tide’ perfection is what should be expected from a director like Tony Scott. There are scenes around 2-5 mins long with no dialogue and just Denzel Washington on screen that are captivating; a testament to the skills of Scott and Washington, which come together with brilliant results

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea with vivid violence and quite long at 146 mins, but in my opinion it has to have these things to make it the masterpiece that it is. If you like a film that really paints the picture before ripping it up in your face with twists and turns that will leave you with your jaw on the floor then this is the film for you. This film has so much to it that if I said anymore I would probably end up spoiling parts of it for you

This is one of the few films that has brought a tear to my eye and that was because you care so much for the characters. I think this film has been highly underrated but hopefully it will get recognised for its heart and for the excellence that oozes from the screen on every level.

    “My Sister’s Keeper” Movie Review

    “My Sister’s Keeper” Plot Summary

Anna Fitzgerald looks to earn medical emancipation from her parents who until now have relied on their youngest child to help their leukemia-stricken daughter Kate remain alive.

    Beautiful

This movie was brilliant. I saw it the other night and right from the beginning I started to cry and throughout the movie was tear after tear after tear. Basically it’s about a girl that has cancer and how the family is dramatically moved by it. Anna was born for one reason to save her sister by giving Kate what she needs, she is a donor baby. But Anna feels that the more she gives to her sister she won’t be able to live her own life so she wants to be medically emancipated from her parents. In the end there’s a twist which makes it even more heartbreaking. Anyone who’s reading this should go see My Sisters Keeper I was really moved by the movie and only three words could describe it Beautiful, Amazing, and a real Tear Jerker… I have never cried so much but I promise… you will enjoy it.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” Movie Review

“The Chronicles of Narnia 1″ Plot Summary

Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion. add synopsis

Can’t wait for the next movie in the series.

I watched it one of its advanced screenings this afternoon and as expected it turned out to be quite a movie

Based on the classic novel by CS Lewis. Four London children are sent to a professors country home in order for protection during World War II. There they find a magic wardrobe which leads to a mystical land called Narnia, which is being ruled by an evil witch. To defeat the Witch, they must join forces with Aslan, the lion God of Narnia, and the great battle between good and evil that’s pretty much the whole story

The acting field was average (not surprising really), Swinton was okay but not top notch kind of stuff. All the kids did a wonderful job and if i can recollect correctly thats more than what i could have done at such a young age

The special effects were above average to excellent and tell us just what you can do if you put enough effort into it. I guess you can call it LOTR for kids and i would absolutely agree with that

Overall an excellent family film and if you are a fan of the Harry Potter franchise then you should be able to dig this quite easily

P.S got my fingers crossed for the next film.9/10

“The Cat in the Hat” Plot Summary

Sally and Conrad are two bored kids whose life is turned up-side-down when a talking cat comes to visit them.

    A very colorful movie.

The cat in the hat has a very clear and colorful picture. When it first came out in cinemas my friends were saying it is brilliant and when I watched it, I too thought it was fantastic. My nephews really love the film and are always asking if they can borrow the film. Mike Myers, Alec Baldwin, Kelly Preston, Dakota Fanning, Spencer Breslin, Amy Hill and everyone else were fantastic. You can only read books or just look at the pictures that are not real but you can actually see the film that makes it much more real. It is very funny and has a good storyline. I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was great

I have seen the film about 10 times and I still have not got bored of it.
