    “Paycheck” Movie Review

    “Paycheck” Plot Summary

What seemed like a breezy idea for an engineer to net him millions of dollars, leaves him on the run for his life and piecing together why he’s being chased.

    I liked it! A clever Sci-Fi thriller.

When I watch a movie like this, I don’t expect for anything to be ‘plausible’, because nothing is plausible in this type of Sc-Fi story. So I just check my ‘logic’ in the coat room and just sit back and, hopefully, enjoy. I enjoyed Ben Affleck as Michael Jennings, super smart ‘reverse engineer’ who can take apart and analyze a new, complicated contraption, and give plans to his employer to make their own, and go one or two steps better. For this he gets paid very well, and has the only additional requirement that he forget everything. And he does, they always see to that. The movie starts with one such job, just to establish the playing field, then the movie starts in earnest when his old friend, James (Aaron Eckhart), entices him to do a three year job that will get him a fee ‘in 8 figures.’ In the process he meets and flirts with pretty, smart Biologist Dr. Rachel Porter (Uma Thurman). Paul Giamatti has a nice role as his friend, Shorty

Almost 2 hours, it held my interest all the way

SPOILERS. Michael’s old friend James is up to no good. The project is a special ‘lens’ and computer system that can see in circular space, warping back on itself so that one can ’see’ into the future. We only are shown the beginning and end of the 3 years, nothing in between, except for some flashbacks later. His memory is erased, but when he goes to the bank to access his $90+ Million, he is told that he signed it away, and his package of personal effects don’t look familiar to him. Cut to the core story, as he was completing the project, he took a look into his future and saw he was to be killed by a bullet at the work site. So, knowing his memory would be erased, he sent a package to himself, with a number of seemingly unrelated items — a bullet, a bus pass, a BMW key, a fortune with a set of lottery numbers, etc. He was smart enough to realize these would be the key items to get him to change the future, stay alive, and avoid the destruction of the world. To do all that he had to get back in and destroy the computer, which he later found he had the wisdom earlier to put a bug into. And, in the end he gets the girl!

    “Face/Off” Movie Review

    “Face Off” Plot Summary

A revolutionary medical technique allows an undercover agent to take the physical appearance of a major criminal and infiltrate his organization.

    Wow….this one is good

This one has a tough job of convincing the audience that the main characters, Travolta and Cage, could swap faces via plastic surgery and still be convincing as one another. It works! Woo has a certain style down-the long flowing robes, slow mo shootouts, orchestral hype in the background, furious shoot outs, explosions, etc. Essentially a more stylish Bruckheimer movie if ya think about it

I have always liked the Bald guy and Gina Gershon here the most from the supporting cast, and enjoyed the way both the leads got to ‘understand’ the others’ family, way of life, friends, etc. You have to like how Castor gets Travolta’s girl to learn knife fighting, for example, or seeing the camaraderie of Cage’s group. Good shootouts and action, sometimes the conceits here are quite far flung, but you can live with that as an audience. I sure did, and so give this…*** outta ****, it’s quite good

“The Chronicles of Riddick” Movie Review

“The Chronicles of Riddick” Plot Summary

5 years after Pitch Black, the wanted criminal Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime, and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe.

Great action, great story, great effects

Great film. I really liked it, being a great fan of Pitch Black (2000). The universe of Riddick is really impressive and way different from the (boring and predictable) other sci-fi titles nowadays (except, maybe Firefly).

Vin Diesel’s character is very well explored in this movie and I guess this is the only Vin Diesel performance that I enjoyed at all. The Necromongers are a very curious and interesting ‘race’ (they have an evil charm, something like the Borgs) and I would like to see more of them and more about Riddick’s past

And I really liked the twist at the ending. I can’t wait to see the third movie of the franchise (if it ever gets released, I hope so).

    “Chicago” Plot Summary

Murderesses Velma Kelly (a chanteuse and tease who killed her husband and sister after finding them in bed together) and Roxie Hart (who killed her boyfriend when she discovered he wasn’t going to make her a star) find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows in 1920s Chicago. add synopsis

    Great Fun

A near perfect adaptation of the Broadway smash featuring an all-star cast who somehow all do their own singing and dancing

One of the very Broadway crossovers in recent memory to actually do its job and entertain, and boy, does it ever! Chicago sucks you in at minute one and you don’t really come up for air until a half hour has passed. Now thats a good movie. Musicals, theater etc are hardly my cup of tea, and Hollywood’s opium dream renditions are even less in my scope of enjoyment. Why Chicago works where most of them have flopped utterly, I am not sure but would have to bet its down to direction. Chicago’s song and dance segments are cut MTV style, but, Marshall seems to have almost perfected this technique to somehow capture the in-theater dramatic ‘zowie’ feeling that almost never makes it from stage to screen. While many argue Chicago owe its success at the Oscars to the drubbing Moulin Rouge took (quite deservedly) the year before, I happen to disagree and believe that for once the Academy actually got it right. The cast is fantastic. Sure you can nitpick about Gere being too nasally and too Gere, and maybe Zellwegger’s drunken bridesmaid dancing could have used a couple more takes, but the final product even with those bizarre ingredients is one of the most enjoyable experiences to come out of Hollywood, maybe ever?

    “Changeling” Plot Summary

A grief-stricken mother takes on the LAPD to her own detriment when it stubbornly tries to pass off an obvious impostor as her missing child, while also refusing to give up hope that she will find him one day.

    Very, Very, Good Movie.

You must go see this movie. YOU MUST GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!! I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect when my wife asked me to go to this movie. And of course having Jolie in it she didn’t have to twist my arm to much. We had to go out of town to see it because our local theater wasn’t showing it. The acting by Jolie was great. Eastwood’s direction was great. And the 20’s and 30’s look to the movie was so realistic. I learned some things about this time frame by watching this movie. So not only did I enjoy the movie I learned a little bit along the way. This is a Rated R movie so I wouldn’t take kids to it because there are a couple disturbing moments in the movie. If this movie doesn’t get some Oscar nominations I will be very surprised. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!

    “The Insider” Movie Review

    “The Insider” Plot Summary

A research chemist comes under personal and professional attack when he decides to appear in a “60 Minutes” expose on Big Tobacco.

    yes this was great.

SPOILERS THROUGH: There is very little that I can add to many of the glowing reviews. I thought The Insider was incredible. Flawless from beginning to end. It’s in the IMDb top 250 and small wonder. It was a superb movie

There are so many elements in this movie that are fascinating. The journalistic issues. The issues of whistle blowing and doing the right thing. In my view both the main characters are heroes. The fact that this is based on a true story makes it that much more fascinating

Pacino and Crowe both, in my opinion, gave flawless performances and both were excellent at drawing the viewer in(let me change that) SWEEPING the viewer in to their lives and the things they were fighting for. There are many movies that take on important issues but lack the ability to keep the movie interesting. That’s not the case here as the movie literally simmers from start to finish and through the last hour or so, I don’t think I moved. That’s the type of film this is and it is absolutely outstanding

This was one of the best roles I’ve seen Al Pacino in and though I have not seen a lot of Crowe’s work, he is wonderful here and well cast

The supporting cast was wonderful too. There have been so many movies made about deception and dishonesty, it’s nice to see a movie where the main characters are courageous and heroic. The Insider is all at once absorbing, disturbing, thought provoking and triumphant. In other words, it’s everything a good movie should be. This is a long movie but the time goes very quickly and it’s not the type of movie that could have been any shorter. (It actually could have been even longer.) Everything from the acting to the camera work(some of it quite unusual) to the story itself is top notch and this is an example of a great film and that rare movie that myself and my film going friends can actually agree on. My vote is 10 of 10.
