“Harsh Times” Movie Review

“Harsh Times” Plot Summary

A tough-minded drama about two friends in South Central Los Angeles and the violence that comes between them.

Excellent movie

Bale’s performance in Harsh time is phenomenal this besides the machinist and American psycho have to be some of my favourite performances by him

The Chemistry between Freddie and Bale is great it seems like they’ve been ‘homies’ for years very tight friendship so you know how tight they are immediately and it makes you care for them

Bale’s character is a former soldier and he has major issues just imagine a soldier coming back for Vietnam with flash backs and such …pretty much they are never the same mentally again…that is bales character right there it’s much more deeper maybe someone will explain it better then me Freddie’s character is the guy who is a ride or die friend he’ll stick with you to end but he’s also a follower and get’s influenced very easily by bale’s character in the movie…I view it as Bale is like an older brother to him Eva Longoria is freddie’s girlfriend and she loves him to death because pirior Freddie stuck by here and help her out during university or college i can’t remember..All she wants now is for Freddie to get a Job but Bale’s influence always divides freddies focus on handing out his applications..She doesn’t like Bale’s character basically thinks he’s going to get freddie killed just imagine being with your friend throwing around a lot of cuss words but when your talking to someone at a business place you talk proper and not urban slang.. I’d say it’s a violent movie i mean there is some brutal scenes that will feed your violence fix….all in all this movie is pretty damn realistic

When a retired engineer is called upon to rescue a failing satellite, he insists that his equally old teammates accompany him into space. add synopsis

You are never too old to have fun

What movie with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones. James Garner, James Cromwell, Donald Sutherland, and Marcia Gay Harden wouldn’t be worth a look. This one has it all, but mostly laughs. This Clint Eastwood produced and directed movie is great simply because the cast doesn’t appear to take it seriously. They are just having fun. And special effects? They are better here than other movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact

If you like movies where people are considered outdated or replaceable and prove the experts wrong, then this is the one. I watch it and keep getting reminded about all those COBOL experts who were back making the big bucks just prior to the millennium change.

    “Million Dollar Baby” Movie Review

    “Million Dollar Baby” Plot Summary

A hardened trainer/manager works with a determined woman in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer.

Beautifully acted, beautifully shot, intimate and profound

The thing that initially struck me about Million Dollar Baby was that it was beautifully shot, making excellent use of light and shade, close and far perspectives, angle and slow-motion. Within these techniques, which are used for effect and not over-used to show off, the simple narrative was able to take shape, performed by actors who appreciated its depth and subtlety, so played their roles with reserved emotion and calm understatement that fit their characters perfectly. Lesser performers would’ve made a botch of the roles that Eastwood and Swank crafted to near-perfection

The movie concerns itself with boxing but is not a boxing movie, rather that’s just the vehicle for its main themes: hope, dreams, determination, success and then loss. Still, it would be facile and glib to ‘use’ boxing in this way and then just gloss over its intricacies… this is where Morgan Freeman’s earthy narration comes into play, telling us all there is to know about training boxers in that same assuring way he told us about Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. So we can chart Maggie’s progress without the characters having to pause and explain what’s going on, and Swank herself – playing the role with layers of nervousness, exuberance, doggedness and zeal – provides the perfect canvas for us to see these changes

The main narrative is simple so shouldn’t be spoiled, however other subplots are constantly at work throughout the movie: Eddie’s own career and his relationship with Frankie, Maggie’s poor background and her relationship with her abhorrent family, Frankie’s long-lost daughter and his taunting interplay with his local priest. None of these runs away with or smothers the movie, nor are they followed through to much conclusion, but they provide intriguing depth to the three main characters as we come to know them in the shadowy expanse of Frankie’s boxing gym. Million Dollar Baby shows you that great films do not need a convoluted storyline or a supercilious screenplay, just great actors and a great cinematographer.

    Good mystery

Eastwood was his usual self, (good). The mystery was good and kept you thinking for most of the movie. The kid was good. The only drawback, the usual old man with a young woman

It would have been much more satisfying and truthful if he had been an (adopted’ grandpa.

“Letters from Iwo Jima” Plot Summary

The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.

    A totally unforgettable movie experience.

This is quite simply one of the best movies i have ever seen. It left me speechless and in tears. A genuine masterpiece, beautifully shot, beautifully cast, wonderfully acted. There’s not much more I can say right now, but I urge you most strongly NOT to miss this movie. Eastwood’s direction is impeccable; he quietly and unerringly leads us through the developing crisis of the American assault on the island, and the desperate Japanese defence. There are so many fine performances here, so many unforgettable moments. A measure of the quality of Eastwood’s direction is that although the dialogue is almost entirely Japanese supported by English sub-titles, by the end of the film I had entirely ceased to be aware of that fact. This is a really wonderful film; please don’t miss it.

“Flags of Our Fathers” Movie Review

“Flags of Our Fathers” Plot Summary

The life stories of the six men who raised the flag at The Battle of Iwo Jima, a turning point in WWII.

Best movie in years – worthy of Academy Awards

‘Flags of our Fathers’ is the powerful and moving true story of what happened to the three survivors of the six men that raised the flag on Iwo Jima as immortalized in the Marine Corps Memorial

The editing of this film, utilizing flashbacks and showing how something as simple as a lightning bolt flashing can bring back memories that haunt veterans of combat is very true to life. My wife is a nurse at a Veterans Home – thunder claps in the middle of the night will invariably bring out cries from the sleeping combat veterans

What is also true to life is how these men – Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John Bradley – did not see themselves to be heroes. They felt that the heroes were those who had fallen on Iwo Jima – yet the public was continually holding them up to be more than they thought they were. This is shown very well when James Bradley is going through the box of his fathers possessions and pulls out an envelope with the Navy Cross stuffed in it. The Navy Cross is one step down from the Medal of Honor and is awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat – normally one who earned it would put it on display

The use of sepia tone at times – plus the sheer starkness of the black sands with the stark white of flares – gave this film a look that was very compelling. As far as how emotional of a movie this was shown in the theatre where I saw it – which was a full theatre on Veterans Day. At the end of the movie, the credits started rolling – and no one stood up. A lot of noses were being blown and tears were being shed, but no comments were made at all – this movie affected the audience that much

I consider this to be equal to Citizen Kane as far as quality movies are concerned. This isn’t light entertainment.

    “Gran Torino” Movie Review

    “Gran Torino” Plot Summary

Disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.

Clint’s best performance since Million Dollar Baby

I saw Gran Torino opening weekend and after hearing rave reviews, I was looking forward to it. After seeing it, I realized what people were excited about, it was Clint’s performance, this is a man you do not want to mess with. He’s the perfect good guy with a bad guy’s lust for vengeance. I love his growls, he sounds like a great guard dog, I would love to just have him by my door if a salesman comes by to make that noise. I can’t believe what a triple threat Clint is: he’s a writer, director, and an actor, not to mention that he’s great at all three of them. He presents Gran Torino with grace and style of an old man that society has forgotten about because of his bad mood not realizing that deep down, he’s truly a good man

Walt Kowalski, a retired Polish American Ford automobile assembly line worker and a Korean War veteran, lives with his dog Daisy in a changing neighborhood which is dominated by immigrants. At the start of the movie, Walt is attending his wife’s funeral, bristling at the shallow eulogy of young Father Janovich. Similarly, he has little patience with his two sons, Mitch and Steve, and their families, who show little regard for Walt’s grief or the memory of their dead mother. Walt’s sons see him as ‘always disappointed’ with them and their families, unaware of their obnoxiousness. Walt’s teenage Hmong neighbors, a shy Thao Vang Lor and his feisty sister Sue, live with their widowed mother and grandmother. The Hmong gang, at that point, tries to persuade Thao to join them. Thao’s initiation is to steal Walt’s prized car, a 1972 Gran Torino Sport. Walt interrupts the robbery, pointing a rifle in Thao’s face and forcing him to flee. After a few days, Spider and his gang return. With Sue at his side, Thao manages to verbally confront them to no avail. The gang drags Thao off his porch in an attempt to assault him. His family tries desperately to fend off Spider and his cohorts. The conflict ends when Walt, who fought in the United States Army’s 1st Cavalry Division, threatens the gang members with his M1 Garand rifle and orders them to get off his lawn. They leave the neighborhood, telling Walt to watch his back

After seeing Sue being harassed by three black teenagers, while her ‘date’ cannot help her, Walt steps in to rescue her, confronting the teenagers and threatening them with a pistol. Sue gets to know Walt, and invites him to a family barbecue on his birthday, bringing him closer to her family, explaining Hmong culture and that during the Vietnam War they fought on ‘his’ side. Sue, Thao, and their mother visit Walt the next day, with Thao’s family forcing him to work for Walt for a week to atone for his attempted theft of the Gran Torino. Walt has Thao clean up the neighborhood until his debt is paid and shows Thao the ways of American men. Meanwhile, the Hmong gang keeps pressuring Thao to join them. But when he refuses, the Hmong gang goes too far in getting their revenge leading to Walt wanting more than punishment, he wants justice

I highly recommend Gran Torino if you get the chance to see it, it has terrific performances and a touching story. I’m really surprised that Clint didn’t get more recognition for his strength in Walt, he became that character and I loved how he protected the family that he once hated. It was wonderful to see all these characters develop and grow together, they had great chemistry and made this movie into a great one. I think down the line, Gran Torino is going to be considered a classic, this is a terrific movie and deserves it’s praise.9/10

Best movie for a long time

“Once Upon a Time in America” Movie Review

“Once Upon a Time in America” Plot Summary

A former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster returns to Brooklyn over 30 years later, where he once again must confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life.

    Excellent!

This movie is such a breath taker! It is not too long! Not if you get into it! If you are bored of the movie then yes, it will seem long. But this is the kind of movie that you have to get in to and pay attention to, to like. And all though the first maybe, thirty minutes aren’t as stimulating, the rest of the movie makes up for it. The beginning is kind of boring due to the fact that you have no idea what’s going on

The movie’s cast was chosen perfectly. The story has no flaws

There is not one detail that went unanswered. The music in the movie is so beautiful, it will haunt you! The rest of the day you’ll be singing it’s score! If you’re a soundtrack freak like me, then listen to the music for this movie! If you are looking for a movie that has its ups and downs, highs and lows, then see ‘Once Upon a Time in America’!
