    “We Were Soldiers” Movie Review

    “We Were Soldiers” Plot Summary

The story of the first major battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War and the soldiers on both sides that fought it.

I’ve been waiting over 30 years for one

Ever since 1970 when I finished my third tour of combat duty with the Marines in Viet Nam I have been waiting for a film that reflected the American Fighting Man in the Viet Nam war as an American Fighting Man; not a drugged-out, anti-war whiner. Well this is it. The movie is non-stop action after the first fifteen minutes of character development is finished. Having experienced what it is like to be over-run by the NVA during the third week of my first VN tour I can tell you that this movie does an excellent job of showing the excitement, tension, exhaustion, chaos, and courage of an extended battle. While this is by no means the best war movie I have ever seen, it is the first Viet Nam war movie which has provided me with a sense of satisfaction after leaving the theater. Mel Gibson turns in a good performance, Sam Elliot is a bit stiff. The wives of the soldiers are believable. Including a bit of the NVA’s attitude about the war adds a balanced flavor to the film. Overall I would say that you will experience at least a small part the intensity of war if you go to this movie. I took my female companion and she was shocked, touched, and thrilled with it. As Americans, we need to remember that freedom is not, and never has been, free. It is always paid for with the blood of those who fight to get it, sustain it, or expand it. The politically correct may not like this film, but then who cares what they like. Thanks for making this film Mel. I’ve been waiting over 30 years to see it.

“(500) Days of Summer” Movie Review

“(500) Days of Summer” Plot Summary

An offbeat romantic comedy about a woman who doesn’t believe true love exists, and the young man who falls for her.

    Fresh & Original Romantic Comedy

This was an excellent romantic comedy, although many might not agree that it is either romantic or a comedy. I found myself laughing out loud at many of the scenes, but the laughs in the theater were few, and I think most people would label this a drama with streaks of black comedy

The driving force behind what makes this movie work (beside the script) is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom Hansen, who carries the movie on the basis of his physical comedy and acting ability. He is the unrequited love interest in the film. JGL does have brief glimpses of true love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel) but it’s clear she’s not interested in anything permanent, just a good time. After his initial sexual encounter with Summer, JGL engaged in a choreographed dance routine of Hall & Oats ‘Your Making my Dreams Come True’, which should win JGL some type of award

Deschanel plays the role she usually plays, soulful & pretty free spirit. She played the character very well and the movie viewer could well understand her reticence to engage in a long term affair with Tom

These types of movies might leave some cold, but the ending turned out well

One additional bonus was Chloe Moritz, who played Tom’s younger teenage sister and Psycho-Analyst. She was great

A very good movie worth checking out. A near perfect date movie I might add.

    “My Sister’s Keeper” Movie Review

    “My Sister’s Keeper” Plot Summary

Anna Fitzgerald looks to earn medical emancipation from her parents who until now have relied on their youngest child to help their leukemia-stricken daughter Kate remain alive.

    Beautiful

This movie was brilliant. I saw it the other night and right from the beginning I started to cry and throughout the movie was tear after tear after tear. Basically it’s about a girl that has cancer and how the family is dramatically moved by it. Anna was born for one reason to save her sister by giving Kate what she needs, she is a donor baby. But Anna feels that the more she gives to her sister she won’t be able to live her own life so she wants to be medically emancipated from her parents. In the end there’s a twist which makes it even more heartbreaking. Anyone who’s reading this should go see My Sisters Keeper I was really moved by the movie and only three words could describe it Beautiful, Amazing, and a real Tear Jerker… I have never cried so much but I promise… you will enjoy it.

    “Artificial Intelligence: AI” Movie Review

    “A.I.” Plot Summary

A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become “real” so that he can regain the love of his human mother.

    I liked it

I thought A.I. was a very good film. I’m sure it is somewhat different from what Kubrick had thought but he and Spielberg had worked on it for a long time. I liked the questions that it posed about such as what does it mean to be a being? Does the boy robot have genuine feelings or are they programmed? But we as people do we have genuine feelings or are they ‘programmed’ in our genetic code, by society, and by other factors? Intriguing questions from an intriguing film. Definitely a thinking persons movie. The acting by Haley Joel Osmet was outstanding and the supporting cast was equally good, too. The portrayal of the future was somewhat frightening but also extremely fascinating. Especially the ending of the film. I saw this film with my brother who’s first word when the film ended was ‘Wow!’ He only expresses that for films he really likes. Those who like science fiction and those who like films that make them think definitely see this film. Even if you are not as impressed as I am you will find parts of the film fascinating.
