“Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” Movie Review

    “Spy Kids 3″ Plot Summary

Carmen’s caught in a virtual reality game designed by the Kids’ new nemesis, the Toymaker (Stallone). It’s up to Juni to save his sister, and ultimately the world.

A good kid’s movie with something for adults

I have not yet seen the first two in this series, but liked this film for what it is. First and foremost, this is a movie for kids. I went with two kids, one 8, the other 11. The younger one loved the movie and the 3-D aspect and couldn’t wait to log on to the website after she got home (difficult website, though, and she soon lost interest). The older one liked it also, but commented about the ‘Spy Kids’ series, ‘They keep getting dumber and dumber.’ Very young children might be scared by some of the flashy scenes and have trouble with the 3-D part. So, the target audience is pretty narrow, but there are a lot of 5-12 year-old kids out there with parents who need to chaperone them….Now, for adults, this is a lot less painless to sit through than most movies for kids. Ricardo Montalban, for my money, gives a splendid performance and just steals the show from everyone else involved. He gets off a few classic lines (‘I can do much, much more than that’) and, for those who know his history, a few references to his earlier screen incarnations (‘Don’t touch that, it is Corinthian leather.’) Obviously, the kids won’t appreciate his history, but he is an outstanding actor who fills his grandfather role nicely

Sylvester Stallone gives an amusing performance. Selma Hayek is pretty as always, though she doesn’t do much. After that, the supporting cast is pretty low-key. I thought Courtney Jines, who plays Demetra, gave a fine, laid back kind of performance that was perfect for the part. Nobody else really registered very strongly, the stars of the show are the situation and the special effects

The putative stars, the ‘Spy Kids’ themselves, are innocuous and no threat to win any acting awards. I can see why children relate to them, they are portrayed as average kids who are not superior beings or anything like that. Unfortunately, they also are quickly moving out of the ‘kid’ category, so I can understand why the people behind the series have said this is the last in the line

The 3-D gimmick worked for me. I stopped noticing the blue-red glasses after a while. Others say they strain the eyes, but they did not strain mine. I think it was a brilliant decision, although to tell the truth, the 3-D was not that big a deal. I have seen good 3-D, and this is minor league, but it was fun and something different for the kids

As for the plot, well, it involves entering a video game (as in the classic ‘Tron’ and so many subsequent films) and solving a problem. Other than that, it makes no sense, especially the resolution, but I’m sure nobody spent too much time trying to make the plot mean anything. It is fun and has a lot of color and action, so the kids will love it. This is sure to do blockbuster business on dvd as a gift to children. I laughed a few times, so it doesn’t have to be like going to the dentist for an adult, either. Recommended for kids and adults who have to see a kid’s movie with them.

    “Dogma” Movie Review

    “Dogma” Plot Summary

An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loophole and re-enter Heaven.

Great film, not up to the standard of Smith’s previous work

Those of you who are fans of Kevin Smith’s previous works (Clerks, Mallrats & Chasing Amy)may find this area familiar in some parts and unnerving and perhaps even commercial by comparison. Dogma sees fallen angels Bartleby and Loki (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon)attempting to make their way back into heaven via a newly instituted catholic dogma. The problem with this lies in the fact that if they are successful, they would have overturned a ruling by God, hence God is always right and if proven wrong would result in the undoing of existence. The familiar presence of Jay and Silent Bob is comforting and ensures that some of the essence Smith’s earlier work stays put, however at times this film dissents into areas that seem out of Smith’s depth. There are some surprisingly touching moments which implies that Smith gave a great deal of thought, similar to that of Chasing Amy. In general it is a great all round cast, (Linda Fiorentino,Chris Rock, Alan Rickman) and it is obvious that whilst writing this Smith had his tongue firmly in cheek.

    “I Spy” Movie Review

    “I-Spy” Plot Summary

Based on the 1960’s television series I Spy. A professional athlete (boxer – Eddie Murphy) has to help a U.S. government agent recover a missing jet. add synopsis

    overall pretty funny,gotta watch it.

eddie murphy is a big mouth boxer where everything is all about him. his attitude is raw and self endulging. owen wilson is a spy that gets all the low budget crappy spy equipment but feels that he is a much better spy than his cohorts. his coworkers get all the good stuff ( high dollar epuipment) and he gets junk, and he makes a big deal about it several times in the movie in a funny way. if you want to watch a funny movie with lots of unexpected punchlines then this is a must see. the storyline is a little lame and predictable, but the acting and annicdotes(sp?) make up for it. pretty good action and lots of humor.very entertaining for an hour and a half. one of the best films i have seen put out by both actors in a while ( 2 years or longer).

    “American History X” Movie Review

    “American History X” Plot Summary

A former neo-nazi skinhead tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same wrong path that he did.

    A masterpiece

Consider this: an ultra-low-budget movie on the subject of racism, with no CGI and few special effects of any kind, with all of the action taking place on two or three sets, the plotline basically consisting of two or three people talking at a time punctuated by occasional outbursts of no-holds-barred violence, a massive downer of an ending, and not starring the usual assortment of Hollywood stars. Sounds like an indie for sure, right? But it’s not. It was a Hollywood film, although for the life of me I can’t imagine how any major studio got behind it. AHX is one of the best films of the decade if not of all time. Norton, who was just kicking off his career, is absolutely mesmerizing as a repentant skinhead and Furlong, known primarily for his role in T2 (and whose career has sort of sputtered out), is right up there with him as the confused younger brother. A must-see for everyone, although not the kiddies. An amazing film, right up and through the incredibly sad ending.

“The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” Movie Review

    “The Life Aquatic” Plot Summary

With a plan to exact revenge on a mythical shark that killed his partner, oceanographer Steve Zissou rallies a crew that includes his estranged wife, a journalist, and a man who may or may not be his son. add synopsis

    Absolutely Brilliant

The thing that some people forget is that Wes Anderson co-wrote the script. the Life Aquatic is quite possibly one of the most original movies i have ever seen, and, personally, i loved every aspect of it. The score was spectacular, mixing Bowies actual recordings with the Portugese covers of Sue Jorge was ingenious. In my opinion the story bares some resemblance to that of Moby Dick, in that the main character is the Capitan of a ship and is bent on finding a sea creature for, at first, revenge… but draw your own comparisons

All in all, the movie was stellar and grabbed my attention from beginning to end, although, it is definitely one of those films that you either like or dislike, and i obviously liked it. I recommend seeing it even if your friends say that its bad, i only rented it in the first place because it was all they had at Video Connection one lonely Friday night and i needed something to watch, and all of my friends, none of whom know what their talking about, trashed it never the less i found it beautiful, hilarious, and over-all an absolutely stunning work of art by Mr. Wes Anderson… also, if you saw it and liked it, you should check out the Royal Tenenbaums, also directed by Anderson, it is almost as good as the Life Aquatic.
