The Marvellous Movie
It was wonderful. I’m sorry, skeptics, but it really was
The costumes were really unique. I liked how they seemed to draw inspiration from several different time periods
I really loved Liam Aiken and Emily Browning as Klaus and Violet Baudelaire- even though they didn’t fit my mental images of the characters, they proved themselves over and over again throughout the course of the film. Emily Browning has a history of doing excellent films, and after seeing her in the comparatively small role of Ned Kelly’s sister I had a lot of faith in her. I wasn’t quite as sure about Liam Aiken because I hadn’t seen any of his work, but I was pleasantly surprised
Sunny Baudelaire (as played by Kara and Shelby Hoffman) was just done perfectly. Everybody in the cinema laughed at the subtitles. I seriously didn’t think that it was possible for two-year-olds to be good at acting, but the Hoffman twins convinced me otherwise
The musical score was brilliantly done and the sets were, in a word, epic. I felt *dizzy* whenever there were panoramic shots of Lake Lachrymose, for heaven’s sakes! There were some scenes which were not in the books- such as the theme of sanctuary, the spyglasses, the lost letter from the Baudelaire parents. As a Lemony Snicket obsessive I expected to fume at these scenes, but they worked wonderfully
Keep an eye out for the hilarious ‘Littlest Elf’ sequence at the beginning and the amazing animated credits (complete with a song from the film ‘The Addams Family’, possibly a nod to Barry Sonnenfield, who is credited as a producer).
I am giving this film a 9 out of 10 simply because I am a fan of the books and there were a couple of story details I felt could have been communicated better
Excellent stuff! If there are any sequels, they can only improve.

Only two films have succeeded in this task over the past eight years; Paul Greengrass’ beautiful United 93, depicting an open interpretation of the final moments of the doomed plane and now, Bigelow’s film will join the short, elite list
This character-driven tale tells the stories of three army soldiers who are a part of the most dangerous of jobs to offer in the military, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), in plainer terms, they disarm bombs. Staff Sergeant William James played ferociously by Jeremy Renner heads up this story as a soldier facing death every moment of the day. With his wife and child at home and often displaying unorthodox behavior, James seems fit for a war soldier. Sergeant JT Sanborn, played by Anthony Mackie is a by-the-book man, living his days at war while incurring losses along the way. Specialist Owen Eldridge played by Brian Geraghty is young, bewildered, and thrust into a situation unknowing of the impact it would have. What these three men bring to their respective roles educates the viewer of the horrors of war. Forget what you think you know on CNN and your local news, Bigelow is running the show with Boal out on assignment and Renner, Mackie, and Geraghty as our anchors. The crews of the picture are the tools in building this powerful vessel. Cinematographer Barry Ackroyd uses his four camera use to keep us feeling like a first-person account of the events of the film. The mesh of Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders score and the sound effects team makes for a more suspenseful experience. Filming in Jordan was the choice of Bigelow to give it a more authentic feel. ‘If you’re going to make a film about the Middle East, make it in the Middle East.’ Bigelow said to me after the film. It paid off big time because I always felt like I was there in the battle zone, enduring pain, torment, and dehydration. With a NY & LA release set for Friday, June 26th, The Hurt Locker’s deserves all the praise its been receiving and should be experienced by any movie lover. The Oscar Prospects might look a little grim based on the summer release but with no real first-half of 2009 contenders, Bigelow and her film have strong chances of taking a spot amongst the final five come end of the year. Renner and Mackie will also be strong contenders in their respective categories. The strongest possibility for an Oscar has to be for writer Mark Boal. The research he did for the film alone will keep Boal in the minds of voters. The Hurt Locker’s striking cinematography, crisp editing that keeps it at a heart palpating pace, strong performances, directing, and writing is enough to take this film in consideration for your viewing. Brilliant, simply brilliant.****/****

One of the greatest movies and life lessons of all time
Not many movies have won the ‘big five’ in the academy awards. It’s enough to win just best picture for a lot of movies. This movie portrays every film element to the highest degree, from the beautiful panoramic shots of the mountains outside of the mental institution to the story of ultimate redemption McMurphy and Chief find at the end
The movie is seen through the eyes of Randle McMurphy (Nicholson). He is sent to the mental institution because he would rather be considered ‘insane’ and live in ‘luxury’ other than being a jailbird in prison. Once he gets into the actual living area where the insane are, he looks up at this tall, native looking man they call ‘Chief’. McMurphy’s initial reaction to Chief was his little Indian dance he did to mock him, but once Chief didn’t react McMurphy asked him if he played football and says to chief, ‘God damn, boy, you’re as big as a mountain.’ Little by little, you could see their friendship start to unfold out throughout the movie
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the title ‘villain’ would definitely belong to Nurse Ratched. She gave threats to the patients, she was even friends with one of the patient’s (Billy) mom. She also tries to toy with McMurphy’s mind by trying to get him to conform with the customs of mental facility. It doesn’t work out for her as planned. Including a classic scene where Nurse Ratched’s threats cause little Billy to commit suicide. In rage, McMurphy has seen enough and actually chokes her out. This causes McMurphy to go through a lobotomy and become a vegetable at his stay at the clinic
I know many people probably disagree with this but, I think Chief killing McMurphy at the end was beautiful as much as it was heartbreaking. It symbolized that McMurphy, still had a chance to redeem himself and become a hero, even if it were death. It also gave Chief clearance to finally ‘escape’ the premises and ‘fly from the cuckoo’s nest’, and how he did it at the end was classic. That’s what makes this movie one of the greatest of all time, not only because of the sensational acting and the sociological significance, but because of the message and symbolism of the story
The directing by Milos Foreman was phenomenal, not only with the memorable acting by Jack Nicholson, but with the camera shots he used in certain scenes. For example, the scene before McMurphy was about to get electro-shock therapy they show a very close up angle of him to show the intensity and crowdedness he had to go through while getting the shock treatment. Nicholson also makes it pretty believable that he is actually getting shocked, by making ‘gurgling’ noises and such
They actually go back to the ‘lying down’ closed angle shot at the end of the movie when Nicholson passes away. I thought it was very brave of the director to keep that long shot of McMurphy’s dead self, because by making it last as though it were a still shot, to me it seemed more and more believable that McMurphy was actually dead. I don’t know how Nicholson just lied there stiff as a board. I know he may have won his Oscar because of his heroic and charismatic character, but how he dealt with himself in those two scenes is what tickles my fancy
The ideology of this film is, in my opinion, what makes it one of the greatest of all time. The story brings up the question of who’s actually the insane; McMurphy and his patients, or Nurse Ratched and the staff? Clinically, McMurphy was not insane. Even the doctors and professors stated that, but since he didn’t follow the norms and the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched, he had to stay at the sanitarium longer. I also loved the allusion of Chief, by acting deaf and dumb. He played the omniscient or ‘god-like’ role of hearing and seeing everything, yet not saying anything himself. It almost seems as he was the narrating the story until he befriended McMurphy
I don’t know if I could think of a more evil villain in a movie other than Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). The evil looks she gave to her patients when they were doing something wrong was as cold-hearted as one could get. Also her audacity to tell Billy’s mother about his sexual deviance is as sinister as you can get. She knew that it would hurt Billy deeply, which was a major reason he was ‘insane’ is because of his relationship with his mother. He eventually killed himself, angering McMurphy
I never thought I would cheer out loud when a grown man was choking out a little woman, but I did here. This scene did a fantastic job of not making it taboo, but making you want her dead even more. This did change Nurse Ratched however, it made her a little nicer to the patients at the end and made her realize that if she abuses her power as a nurse, it can come back to haunt her
The meaning of this story is wonderful and helped Jack Nicholson set the bar for acting. The symbolism of Chief’s and McMurphy’s redemption serves as a corner stone for many many movies today. Whether it be the costumes of the patients, the crazy acting, or even the beautiful classic shot at the end of the movie where Chief runs out to freedom; This movie will never be forgotten. And it serves as a good lesson for everyone out there who feels left out can all come together and get freedom. I advise anybody who says they love movies to watch this film, because it will not only change your views, it will change your life and you can’t say that about a lot of movies.

Fascinating Action/Sci-Fi Film!, That’s Very Engrossing, And Always Surprising!, With An Amazing Performance From Christian Bale!
This is a fascinating Action/Sci-Fi film that’s very engrossing, and always surprising, with an amazing performance from Christian Bale!. All the characters are awesome, and the story is fantastic and constantly unpredictable, plus Christian Bale is simply amazing in this!. It’s a little slow to get going, but pretty soon after wards i really got into the story,and while i didn’t get all that was going at certain points i was still fascinated all the same!, plus Taye Diggs was great as the villain, as was the other one!. The ending has a shocking twist, and it has some spectacular gun battles and fight scenes!, plus i wish Sean Bean didn’t have to get killed of so soon. The character development is awesome!, and i thought the plot while complicated was really excellent!, plus some scenes gave me the chills
There were some really shocking scenes, and the film had a disturbing feel to it, plus i found it quite creative!. This is a fascinating Action/Sci-Fi film, that’s very engrossing and always surprising, with an amazing performance from Christian Bale!, and i say it’s a must see for everyone!. The Direction is excellent!.Kurt Wimmer does an excellent job here, with stunning camera work,fantastic angles, wonderful slow mo shots, and lots of other great creative shots as well!. The Acting is wonderful!. Christian Bale is AMAZING as always, and is amazing here, he is incredibly tense, extremely likable, always unpredictable, had a very mysterious character, carried the film,had a lot of character, and you can’t take your eyes off him when he’s on screen, and amazing performance indeed! (Bale Rules!!). Taye Diggs is great here as one of the villains, and while i wanted to slap that smile off his face at times, he was quite effective, for the most part, i just wished he had more screen time. Emily Watson is great here, and can do these roles in her sleep!,i liked her lots. Sean Bean sadly only has a cameo, but it’s a damn cool one at that! (Bean Rules!). Rest of the cast do fine. Overall a must see for everyone!. ****1/2 out of 5

This movie may require much more ’suspension of disbelief ‘ than most but the fact that many are still enjoying it says plenty about its entertainment value.

One of the Best Heist Movies Ever
When you want to steal $160 million in cash from a huge casino in Vegas, you can either do it with force, or you can do it in a sneaky way. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his gang map out the casino and find a way to get down into the vault without anyone knowing what is going on until Rusty (Brad Pitt) calls the owner of the casino, Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) to state the terms. A large reason for the heist was that Benedict was going out with Danny’s sexy ex-wife (Julia Roberts) and he wanted her back. The key to Danny and Linus (Matt Damon) getting into the vault was a device that Basher (Don Cheadle) stole, a bomb powerful enough to wipe out the power of Las Vegas. Not many people would find a movie about stealing money entertaining, but the way that this one was made certainly can catch people’s eye. I really think that it is one of the best of the new decade.

First of all I would like to say that this movie might seem like Liar Liar at first sight, but it is not!I think this movie is both funny and sweet. What if one word could change everything? I found myself wondering this after leaving the cinema, and I left it with a satisfied feeling of quality
This is the best Jim Carrey movie I have seen in years. I really enjoyed it and so did the rest of the audience too…And I love the soundtrack on this, the song he has as a ring-tone, Journey – Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) is great, fantastic! I feel real good when I heard it, and the movie made me smile, but not just smile, also feel something! I felt real joy!!I must congratulate the director and the cast for a job well done! You made a movie that really works, and for that I am grateful! Good movies are rear these days. 9/10 for me, will buy it on blue-ray when it comes.

The best film of the year. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen.
There Will Be Blood is a story about greed, religion and vengeance due to the discovery of one of nature’s riches: OIL!Daniel Plainview(Daniel Day-Lewis) is a poor silver miner who is injured and taken in by a few men digging for oil. When one of them dies in a freak accident, Daniel brings up the man’s son as his own and becomes a self-made oil tycoon in the process. After receiving a tip-off that a seemingly impoverished town out west has a whole ocean of oil beneath the surface, Plainview rushes there and stops at nothing to get what he wants. Even if it means losing all the things most important to him, especially his SANITY. It was written for the screen and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who also directed Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love. This is definitely a far better than the two. He should get a Best Director Nod for his work. The music is unlike anything ever I’ve ever heard, and it completely drew me into the haunting mood of the movie. The movie will get a lot of Oscar Nominations, hopefully Best Picture but most importantly:Best Actor. Daniel Day-Lewis is arguably the most talented living actor and his performance here clinches that title in my opinion. At first, you see how Plainview goes from being an extremely charismatic individual to a dark, insane and vicious oilman. Day-Lewis perfects all of these characteristics to a T and no other performance this year is even in the same league as this one. The movie is about 2 hours and 40 minutes long but it certainly didn’t feel like it when I watched it. Actually, I would’ve been happier if the movie was 3 1/2 hours. It was that good. I was simply enthralled by this work of art. It is the best movie of the year with the best performance of the year.

A superb updating of a classic production!
The new ‘Get Smart’ does a masterful job of capturing the style, tone and humor of the ’60s series, while transporting it into a modern sensibility. I had hopes for this film after seeing the two leads doing a 30-second skit on the Academy Awards show and thought they were dead on. So I invested $11.50 and was proved right
First, this is no cheap knockoff. The production team captured Buck Henry’s creation very credibly both in tone and substance. It reminded me very much of the late ’80s homage to ‘Dragnet,’ which was executed with love and great attention to detail (right down to the product placement of Camel cigarettes and a photo of Jack Webb on the Dan Akroyd’s desk). It’s no small feat updating something as much a part of its era into a modern sensibility. There were even echoes of the early James Bond films (especially in The Rock’s ladykiller character flirting with CONTROL’s ‘Miss Moneypenny’ and in some of the musical cues). On the other hand, the production values were all first-rate and contemporary, including a CGI effect of an aerial fly-around and push-in to a 747 that was reminiscent of the key shot in the pilot of Star Trek
Steve Carrell makes a very reasonable Agent 86; where Don Adams played the character as a bumbling naif, Carrell makes him into a goodhearted wannabe who, despite having the kind of personality that renders him invisible in society, still has intelligence and an earnestness that can make him into hero material when he works at it. He reminded me of Jim Varney’s portrayal of Jed Clampett: pure of heart and belief in his fellow man, yet with a bit of chops in dealing with the dark side of society. He fumbles around a lot getting his sea legs after years of being an ineffectual fatso (viz. impetuously slamming a fire extinguisher into the noggin of his boss at one point) but in a pinch, he’s quickwitted and moves with decision. (He also quite reasonably feels more secure in briefs than boxer shorts; I don’t know what Adam’s take on this issue was).
On the other hand, Anne Hathaway nails Agent 99 with a performance absolutely capturing Barbara Feldon’s creation, right down to the tone of voice, the raised eyebrows, and at least three different dead-on intonations of ‘Oh, Max!’ Nevertheless, Hathaway moves the character beyond the pre-feminist liberation era and invests 99 with a believable 21st century sexuality and sense of empowerment. She’s clearly in charge during the first half of the movie, only slowly yielding to an appreciation of Carrell’s growing sense of command (and her own feelings toward him) as we move into Act 3.
Alan Arkin brings an odd turn to the Chief, playing him with a much-less-exasperated fatalism than did Edward Platt. In an interview, Arkin says he saw the character as a very good principal of a very bad middleschool. He comes across as a somewhat old codger closing in on retirement who’s comfortably in charge and doesn’t try to micromanage, and he has an important role in the climax piloting a Cessna over Disney Hall downtown, but I missed one of the catchlines they didn’t include in this revision: namely, the Chief getting one of his headaches. (The other catchline they left out was 86’s frequent ‘That’s the second biggest (fill in the blank) I’ve ever seen.’)Everything else was there, though: We see the Cone of Silence (technologically updated), a very clever CGI revision of the entrance passage to CONTROL HQ, cameos by both Hymie the Robot and Fang, and there’s even a passing utilization in this cellphone-obsessed society to the shoe-phone (appropriated from the Smithsonian institution display of the old ‘defunct’ CONTROL). On the other hand, the agency is now under the Homeland Security Department and answers to the Vice President (when they can find him) and uses lots of high-tech, satellite surveillance and GPS gear. Chaos is in cahoots with terrorist organizations around the world and we know they’re bad because they drive around in SUVs (the most satisfying and ‘green’ event is seeing one of Satan’s Sedans being demolished by a freight train).
Oh, and BTW, it’s also a love story.

A great, worth film
This film is worthy of a 10/10 rating simply because of its imaginative and complex nature, I mean, I couldn’t bring myself to know why this simple idea of a man aging backwards hadn’t sprouted up before. Set all the way back at the end of the Great War, to New Orlean’s meeting with Hurricane Katrina, this movie tells the story of Benjamin Button, a baby born an old man of eighty, destined to die in the mere form of a zero-year-old. I found this movie very emotional and special because there’s reeally nothing like it. I honestly thought, when I found out the immense length of the film, it was going to be boring….I was wrong, it gripped me from start to finish. There are many emotional and touching scenes in it, including the end, where it brings forth Benjamin Button’s ‘younger’ years as an old man. Nothing went wrong with the cast, Brad Pitt played a great job as a reverse-aging man, and Cate went well as his childhood friend. Overall, this movie was great and I recommend it to anyone who loves the genre.
