    “Red Planet” Movie Review

    “Red Planet” Plot Summary

Astronauts search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry.

One of the Best Sci Fi movies Made this decade

I have tangled with over a dozen people who said this movie was trash.. and each and every one of the viewers 1. Didn’t see the movie. 2. Confused it with Tim Robbins’ AWFUL Mission to Mars

BOTH MOVIES CAME OUT AT THE SAME TIME.. THE SAME YEAR.. so please get them straight. This movie is fabulous with the zero-G fire aboard the ship and the chilling suffocation struggle which Sizemore brought to new levels of frail humanity. They choke to near death only to learn that Mars has an atmosphere. This isn’t the only discovery they make on this creative masterpiece, it seems you can learn a little bit about science by watching this film. Wow! And you thought that this was a no-brainer.uh uh.. Sizemore goes out with a blaze of glory in one of the most eerie suicides i’ve ever seen on screen. So if you think you’ve seen this movie.. double check it.

    “Space Cowboys” Plot Summary

When a retired engineer is called upon to rescue a failing satellite, he insists that his equally old teammates accompany him into space. add synopsis

You are never too old to have fun

What movie with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones. James Garner, James Cromwell, Donald Sutherland, and Marcia Gay Harden wouldn’t be worth a look. This one has it all, but mostly laughs. This Clint Eastwood produced and directed movie is great simply because the cast doesn’t appear to take it seriously. They are just having fun. And special effects? They are better here than other movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact

If you like movies where people are considered outdated or replaceable and prove the experts wrong, then this is the one. I watch it and keep getting reminded about all those COBOL experts who were back making the big bucks just prior to the millennium change.

    “Jurassic Park” Movie Review

    “JP” Plot Summary

During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.

    I LOVE this movie!

This film is easily one of my favorite movies. I saw this movie when it came out in theaters back in 1993; I was only 9-years-old and, though some scenes scared the crap out of me, it blew me away. I was amazed at how, for the first time in a movie, I felt like I was watching REAL dinosaurs. For those who haven’t seen this movie (there are people like that?), it centers on a billionaire’s attempt to create a new amusement park on an isolated island creating bio-engineered dinosaurs; when a group of specialists are brought in to examine the park, things go terribly wrong

I absolutely loved the story of this film; I loved it so much I had my parents buy me Michael Crichton’s novel and I read it 3 times through the course of my fifth grade year. It was then that I fell in love with the work of Crichton and found myself reading the rest of his work. While, yes, the movie did divert pretty heavily from the book, I still felt it was a great adaptation. It’s Spielberg’s version of Crichton’s story, so I don’t mind the mass differences. The movie is much more family-friendly than Crichton’s novel and I would love to see a another version eventually, a darker version that sticks closer to Crichton’s novel. Unlike most instances when I can say ‘The book was better’ or ‘The movie was better’, I don’t feel the need in this case because they were both fantastic

The cast did a terrific job. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough…all were great in their roles. Though my favorite performance came from Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, the arrogant chaos theoretician. I’ve been a fan of Goldblum for a while and I thought he was the perfect choice for the role in this movie. Of course, I have to rave a bit about the film’s special effects. As I mentioned before, this film contains probably the most realistic dinosaurs seen in cinema. A seamless combination of practical animatronics and CGI were used to bring the dinosaurs to life. By now, the effects seem a little dated but they continue to stand strong even now, 15 years later

This movie is one of those films that every must see. It grossed $350 million in the US alone. The film marked yet another milestone in special effects in cinema. And most importantly, it’s just entertaining.

    “The Simpsons Movie” Movie Review

    “The Simpsons Movie” Plot Summary

After Homer accidentally pollutes the town’s water supply, Springfield is encased in a gigantic dome by the EPA and the Simpsons family are declared fugitives.

The Simpsons Movie was Worth the Wait. Fantastic!

I Don’t want to give much away, but this movie truly is EPIC. The storyline is great, so is the animation. The movie is hilarious throughout, and also has one of the most emotional moments ever on The Simpsons. You can see just about every face ever on The Simpsons and they keep making subtle references, such as when Homer and Bart jump Springfield Gorge, the ambulance is still crashed into the tree

It definitely rewards long-time fans, but it is a great movie even for those who don’t watch the Simpsons. CGI only adds to the excellent drawings, and it is very cool to see them on the big screen! If you love the Simpsons, Old or New, you will LOVE this.

    “Platoon” Movie Review

    “Platoon” Plot Summary

A young recruit in Vietnam faces a moral crisis when confronted with the horrors of war and the duality of man.

    Best War Movie Ever Made

PLATOON is the best war movie ever made. It’s dark, harrowing, complex, and thrilling. But because so much attention is paid to Oliver Stone’s real life status as a Vietnam vet, most people assume the story is totally original and totally based on one man’s first-hand experience. I, on the other hand, would like to suggest some of the literary and cultural roots of the classic film

Norman Mailer’s THE NAKED AND THE DEAD presented a vision of jungle combat in World War II that obviously inspired Oliver Stone in many ways. Both emphasize the fact that the soldiers are drawn from the lowest level of society. Both show the war as being run by selfish elites who take no part in the suffering and dying

Both are dominated by a cruel villain — Sgt. Barnes in PLATOON is in many ways a perfect replica of Sgt. Croft. Both are Army lifers, both enjoy torturing and killing helpless victims, both talk in terms of authority and control being more important than justice or even logic. Both are perfectly willing to use cold-blooded murder as a way to hold on to authority among their own troops. Both are presented as being Southerners/Westerners, linked to the genocide of the Indians and the lawless violence of the frontier. The name ‘Barnes’ is a play on ‘Croft’ since both link to the farming past and to the rural America big city boys like Mailer and Stone both (fairly or unfairly) detest

But Oliver Stone goes beyond Mailer in many ways. While in Mailer’s book the attempts by Lieutenant Hearn and Red Valsen to stand up to Croft are almost pathetically ineffective, PLATOON presents both Elias and later, even Chris Taylor as fully capable of defying Barnes and demanding justice. This is what gives the movie a far greater power and resonance than Mailer’s book

Moreover, Stone is not afraid of mysticism and symbolism, and he is not shackled by the socialist-realist documentary aesthetics of Mailer’s novel. Thus while Red Valsen ‘must’ be a working man and a left-wing stick figure, Elias’ ethnic and economic background is left a mystery. In the same way, Barnes, while clearly linked to the mean rednecks of the platoon and the violence of the Old West, is also linked to more compelling and even sympathetic tragic heroes, such as Captain Ahab and even — dare one say it — Count Dracula

Tom Berenger is a much better actor than Bela Lugosi, to be sure. But notice the similarities. Just as Dracula is always seen with the whining, submissive Renfield in tow, so Barnes is always being compared to his wheedling, repulsive sidekick O’Neill. Just as Dracula cannot die, so Barnes also seems to be immortal. (One of the good men even says, ‘Barnes ain’t meant to die.’) Barnes all but quotes Dracula in the chilling scene in the bunker when he dares (or begs) the good men of the platoon to kill him. His seemingly offhand remark — ‘death? What do you all know about death?’ — suggests that Barnes cannot die because he is already dead. This is eerily reminiscent of Dracula’s statement that ‘to die — to be really dead — that must be glorious.’ The point here is that PLATOON is indeed a brutal, realistic look at Vietnam, but it is also a classic movie which draws upon a whole host of literary and film classics for its mythic resonance and power

What a magnificent and yet tragic achievement for Oliver Stone!

    “Se7en” Movie Review

    “Seven” Plot Summary

Police drama about two cops, one new and one about to retire, after a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his MO.

one of the best-made films of its era and genre

Despite cliches, and a very depressing finale, this is one of the best-made films of its era and genre

The strengths of the film include an odd relationship between the two lead cops, who seem loosely based on the two lead cops of the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, but who (thankfully) never play for laughs, and never really become ‘buddies’ – the young cop is too arrogant, and the older cop has too much experience, which the young cop refuses to acknowledge. The two characters are also brilliantly acted by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (probably his best performance).

There’s one odd flaw in the film – about half-way through, I found that I had learned to ‘expect the unexpected’ from the film, which meant that the rest of the film was predictable in a bizarre way – simply decide where the expected move would be, and then expect the unexpected move instead. The most obvious instance of this is in the finale itself, which could be guessed at least 5 minutes ahead of time

Normally, this would be a formula for disaster – but fortunately, the high quality of the film-making twists the film into an edge-of-the-seat suspenseful waiting game as we watch with horror the one cop’s encounter with the insanity of pure evil

I didn’t want to admire this film (to be honest, I dislike Brad Pitt something fierce), but I’m afraid I must – very professionally made, it delivers its promised suspense all the way.
