“Indecent Proposal” Movie Review

“Indecent Proposal” Plot Summary

A married woman agrees to have sex with another man for $1,000,000. add synopsis

Explores what love really means

Warning, may be some spoilersIndecent Proposal is a film that knows exactly how someone feels when it comes to jealousy. There is a great line in the film after Demi Moore comes back from her encounter with gazillionaire Robert Redford. Her husband, played perfectly by Woody Harlesson, is asking her questions that don’t need to be answered. Because if they are, it will put a damper in their marriage. But he persists and finally Demi shouts out to him, ‘ If I tell you he wasn’t any good then I’m a liar. If I tell you that he was then I’m a whore. ‘ What a brilliantly written line and it is one that lends a perfect ear to what the film is about in most senses. Jealousy is a powerful emotion but being broke and in love is just as powerful on the other end of the scale. What is so great about this film is that is makes us all question what we would do in that exact same situation. Would you let your wife sleep with a man for one million dollars? Could you look at it and say that it was only one night and you can deal with it? Would you say that your marriage is strong enough to overcome something so meaningless? And that is the key issue right there. Is it really that meaningless? If you are married and in love ( if you are together in a monogamous relationship), is there ever a time when sex is meaningless enough to overlook, even if all of your financial problems are solved in the aftermath?Indecent Proposal is a great film in almost every sense. The actors are great, especially Oliver Platt who has a cameo as their lawyer and he gets all the laughs. The direction is great as it never gets anywhere close to pornographic, and it lets the audience decide for themselves what happened on that fateful night. When you look at the whole concept of the film, you know it could get cheesy if handled poorly and irresponcibly. But it never does. It stays on course and delivers the goods. I highly recommend this film and I think it is good to watch it with someone that you love. It will invoke some very interesting conversations after words. But don’t watch it with them if you are afraid of the answers that you might get. That, to me is good film making. Something that leaves you discussing it long after it is over. Indecent Proposal does that.

    “Million Dollar Baby” Movie Review

    “Million Dollar Baby” Plot Summary

A hardened trainer/manager works with a determined woman in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer.

Beautifully acted, beautifully shot, intimate and profound

The thing that initially struck me about Million Dollar Baby was that it was beautifully shot, making excellent use of light and shade, close and far perspectives, angle and slow-motion. Within these techniques, which are used for effect and not over-used to show off, the simple narrative was able to take shape, performed by actors who appreciated its depth and subtlety, so played their roles with reserved emotion and calm understatement that fit their characters perfectly. Lesser performers would’ve made a botch of the roles that Eastwood and Swank crafted to near-perfection

The movie concerns itself with boxing but is not a boxing movie, rather that’s just the vehicle for its main themes: hope, dreams, determination, success and then loss. Still, it would be facile and glib to ‘use’ boxing in this way and then just gloss over its intricacies… this is where Morgan Freeman’s earthy narration comes into play, telling us all there is to know about training boxers in that same assuring way he told us about Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. So we can chart Maggie’s progress without the characters having to pause and explain what’s going on, and Swank herself – playing the role with layers of nervousness, exuberance, doggedness and zeal – provides the perfect canvas for us to see these changes

The main narrative is simple so shouldn’t be spoiled, however other subplots are constantly at work throughout the movie: Eddie’s own career and his relationship with Frankie, Maggie’s poor background and her relationship with her abhorrent family, Frankie’s long-lost daughter and his taunting interplay with his local priest. None of these runs away with or smothers the movie, nor are they followed through to much conclusion, but they provide intriguing depth to the three main characters as we come to know them in the shadowy expanse of Frankie’s boxing gym. Million Dollar Baby shows you that great films do not need a convoluted storyline or a supercilious screenplay, just great actors and a great cinematographer.

    “Sling Blade” Plot Summary

Karl Childers, a simple man hospitalized since his childhood murder of his mother and her lover, is released to start a new life in a small town. add synopsis

    Wow…… Intense.

This is a intense movie but at times can be funny. I did not really want to watch this but ended up doing so and I loved it. Billy-Bob Thorton does a great job playing a mentally handicapped person. In my view He does a much better job then Sean Penn did in ‘I am Sam’.This is a sometimes disturbing, sometimes heartwarming movie which can really show you what life can be like for some people. It takes us into all sorts of topics like, religion, homosexuality, sexism etc

As the movie approaches it’s conclusion the music becomes more and more intense and right at the conclusion it just goes silent. This just grabbed my attention and I could not stop watching it. Every part of this movie is perfect and everybody should see this. It is just great.

    “Love Actually” Movie Review

    “Love Actually” Plot Summary

Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

    Actually…excellent

Well this movie is actually…excellent. It includes lots of characters who are all in love in their own special way and the whole story is set in London five weeks before Christmas. We meet Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), old singer who tries to get back on top with help of his loyal manager Joe (Gregor Fisher); David (Hugh Grant) has just become the new Prime Minister and he instantly falls in love with his new personal assistant Natalie (Martine McCutcheon); Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman) are married couple with their own problems; Sarah (Laura Linney) is women torn between a man she loves and her sick brother; Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Juliet (Keira Knightley) are fresh married, but Peter’s best friend Mark (Andrew Lincoln) is in love with Juliet; John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page) met on shooting of porn movie; Jamie Bennett (Colin Firth) moves to France after he found out that his girl is cheating him with his brother and there he meets Aurelia (Lucia Moniz), young Portuguese woman; Colin Frissell (Kris Marshall) hopes that he’ll find ‘normal’ girl(s) in America; and finally there is Sam (Thomas Sangster), who is young boy and also in love, which makes a problem to his stepfather Daniel (Liam Neeson).

So many characters and so many actors that are beautifully composed in this movie. All that is achieved Richard Curtis in his directorial debut. His story is for everyone. I think that lots of people could find themselves in this characters that are full of life and very real. Maybe the only characters that are little stretched are the ones of John and Judy. It’s hard to believe that porn actors are so shy like they are both presented. But here Curtis makes fun with everything. That’s why I love Britons so much. They smile to others equally as they smile to themselves. ‘Love Actually’ rises above many romantic movies because it has great story, capable direction, top class actors and magnificent soundtrack mixed with some old and some new songs. I really can’t talk about all the actors in this movies cause it would last for days; instead I’ll mention only two: Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson. Nighy brings breath of fresh air to his character while he’s making fun with his manager, his own hit song and Britney Spears. Emma Thompson, ah Emma Thompson. She makes acting so easy, makes you feel that anyone could act. She’s so natural and believable, such extraordinary actress. There is also lots of cameo roles (Billy Bob Thornton, Claudia Schiffer, Denise Richards, Sienna Guillory…) and one hilarious appearance of Rowan Atkinson as jewelery salesman (he’s like Christmas ghost, you know when he helps young Sam).

Well, I almost forgot to say what is this movie about (at least how I understand it). It gives us a message; that we must search and struggle for love, we must make sacrifice, just like Jamie and Sam for example did, while Sarah choose the other way (her brother) and she gave up. Actually everything is said in the beginning; there is enough love on this world (great idea with airport arrivals). Actually, I advice you to watch this movie. Actually, I gave 10 to it, cause it’s so much better then any other romantic movie I’ve ever watched. Or I could just say, love actually.

    “Tombstone” Movie Review

    “Tombstone” Plot Summary

A successful lawman’s plans to retire anonymously in Tombstone, Arizona, are disrupted by the kind of outlaws he was famous for eliminating.

Easily the best film I’ve seen in a month

A public service announcement to anyone that hasn’t seen this movie: Watch it now! I just saw it for the first time, and it’s easily the best movie I’ve seen in months

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but, in my opinion, characters are likely the most important aspect of a film. That said, the characters here couldn’t be better, each one has their own distinct personality, they all have moments to shine and, most importantly, they are all superbly acted. Top honours in that category go, of course, to Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. Simply one of the best characters ever to grace the screen, no more needs to be said. Kurt Russell also did a very good job as celebrated lawman Wyatt Earp. The supporting cast are great as well, but these two certainly stand out…especially Kilmer

I wont get in to how great the plot is so that I don’t spoil it. I’ll just leave it at this: it’s an enthralling story that will keep you glued from beginning to end, surprise you at times, and even saves time to make you laugh. Very well written, very well played out. Even the music is great, which is something that I often overlook

In conclusion, I’m a huge western fan. In fact, next to horror, I’d have to say they are my favourite genre of film. Despite being fairly recent, this film ranks among the best and has certainly earned it’s spot as one of my favourite films.9/10

    “Dead Man” Plot Summary

On the run after murdering a man, accountant William Blake encounters a strange Indian named “Nobody” who prepares him for his journey into the spiritual world. add synopsis

A perfect full stop to a great genre

This is what I call ‘first class’. Music, picture, dialogues, atmosphere, the actors’ play I like it all. What I do no like is that at least one scene could be easily moved to ‘deleted scenes’ section, while all the deleted scenes should be put into the film. You don’t have to be a fortune-teller to understand what ‘one scene’ I mean

It is always enjoyable when the film is opened wide for interpretations. This is the case. When does Blake die? Where is he travelling? Is it reality? Who is that cannibal? Why is he being hit by an arrow? Who is that ‘Nobody’? Where is Blake heading? Being myself a bit of a guitar player I really enjoy the score. It adds a lot to the freaky pace of the film and creates the bizarre atmosphere

Great job, Mr Jim Jarmusch. But 9 out of 10 because of the existence of something extra and the absence of something vital and important. Thank you for attention.

    “Astronaut Farmer” Plot Summary

A NASA astronaut (Thornton), forced to retire years earlier so he could save his family farm, has never give up his dream of space travel and looks to build his own rocket, despite the government’s threats to stop him.

    Good To The Last Drop

I loved this movie from start to finish. Heart warming and solid acting With some humor and acceptable special effects. I was looking for a feel good movie to top off a rough week at work and this filled the bill perfectly. I especially enjoyed the family theme of the movie not to forget the main theme of dreams and what they are worth to any person. This movie had enough stamina to keep me guessing which way the story would go What else could you ask for? I have seen this movie in stores and kept passing it up and instead I ended up renting it. My mistake. I should have purchased it and thus adding another great movie to my collection.

    “School for Scoundrels” Plot Summary

A young guy short on luck, enrolls in a class to build confidence to help win over the girl of his dreams, which becomes complicated when his teacher has the same agenda. add synopsis

    Fun to watch

There was a decent but not outstanding British comedy (1960) by the same name as this film, starring that great comic actor Alastair Sim, who also was wonderful as Scrooge in 1951’s Christmas Carol. It was based loosely (the books resemble self-improvement manuals) on Stephen Potter’s well-worth reading ‘One Upmanship’ and ‘Lifemanship’ books. Those hilarious best-selling books provide the reader with a guide as to how to use guile to get even with someone you identify as worthy of getting even with, or as Potter put it, ‘creative intimidation.’ To some extent the 2006 ‘School for Scoundrels’ could also be said to be based on those Potter books. While the original books and the 1960 film envisioned a small private college that taught the art of being one-up (if you are not one up, you’re one down), the 2006 version is a single self-improvement course taught secretly by a masterful rogue (Billy Bob Thornton) who calls himself Dr. P, to a group of low self-esteem ‘losers.’ His course resembles extreme confidence building sink or swim exercises more than one-upmanship. But he also goes one-on-one to put down the best of his students. It is explained that Dr. P is very competitive and shoots down anyone who might approach his level of skill. When facially challenged Roger (Jon Heder) unexpectedly is standing out as the best of his class, a one-upmanship contest between the master and the student gets underway

This is a fun film to watch; not at all sophomoric and not leaning on the slapstick approach. In addition to the two leads, the rest of the cast includes, among others, well known comic Sarah Silverman and comic actor Ben Stiller. Stiller is about as good as he gets (he is usually in films that are not my taste in comedy, although I recently saw him in something I really enjoyed.) On the other hand, the lines given to Sarah Silverman just make her character brassy rather than funny and are not up to the caliber of her stand-up comedy that she writes for herself.

    “Armageddon” Movie Review

    “Armageddon” Plot Summary

When an asteroid the size of Texas is headed for Earth the world’s best deep core drilling team is sent to nuke the rock from the inside.

This just goes too far sometimes, but it’s good

I’ll say it straight out, this movie let me down quite a lot. I wanted an epic badass of a film that would revolutionize the way I see movies. I got an epic behemoth of a film with more then ample doses of goofy monkeying around inserted sometimes at the most inappropriate of scenes. Bruce Willis stars in this movie along with Ben Afleck and Liv Tyler as two young lovers, and it’s safe to say that there aren’t too many complaints with the acting (although admittedly there were some weak spots there, too).

No, my main problem with this movie is the comedy. Now, I’m all for comedy, but the directors of Armageddon didn’t seem to be taking their own plot too seriously at some point. I was in awe at the utter stupidity of the characters in this movie, especially toward the second half of it, and specifically Rockhound (Steve Buscemi, who does do a very good job acting here anyway). We all need some lighthearted fun in our movies, but what we don’t need is for the comedy to interfere with the dramatic parts of the movie, which it almost does a few times here. Rockhound’s foolishness and monkeying around almost ruins several scenes and it doesn’t fit with the whole theme of saving the Earth. Why did they even put the parts involving the stripper and then later the machine gun on the asteroid into the movie? It’s safe to tell who we can all throw rocks at for ruining the movie. Why on earth is he so lenient about it? It makes no sense. I can say the same thing for most of the crew at the beginning, too, they seem awfully laid back for a bunch of guys about to go save the world. Bear was falling asleep and making comments about a hot girl during the teaching sessions. What? Like I said, I like comedy fine, but here it just hinders what would otherwise be a phenomenal movie.

This movie is full of explosions (big explosions, too, we’re not talking about little buildings. We’re talking entire cities all at once here. That’s epic.), romantic love scenes, and other action clichГ©s. They’re actually done quite well, until we get Rockhound or Bear making more dumbass jokes. The whole mishmash makes Armageddon look like a PARODY of the action genre at some points, and it hurts the score. A lot. If I were to see this movie without any prior knowledge of action movies, and having never seen one before this, I would get a flawed first impression of the genre. It’s not quite to the level of Scary Movie and Date Movie, of course, but it’s not an upstanding example of how to incorporate comedy into an action movie. See Die Hard 3 or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for that. Sorry, but Armageddon just goes too far overboard sometimes.

No, I don’t hate this movie though. I do like it quite a lot. It’s great fun for a Saturday night with friends or if you’ve been drinking (lol). The ending scenes with Willis and Afleck are very touching, as are most of the scenes involving Liv Tyler. It’s also got some extremely triumphant moments, and the explosions and special effects are amazingly done. Check out those skies toward the end! The scenes with Chick (Will Patton) and his ex-wife and son are extremely touching, and are the saving grace of the quieter parts of the movie. Beautiful. And like I mentioned before, it’s EPIC. In all caps, too. There aren’t many other movies like this that can touch it in epic-ness. Not even Die Hard or it’s sequels are more epic than this monster of a film.

Recommended to action fans who can stand stupidity in their movie-viewing. I’ll be watching this one again, too.
